  • nice price, hdds alone are about $230 each. Anyone with experience with any of these?

  • yep price seems pretty good…

  • Very tempting! Waiting for any user reviews/recommendations?

Would this be better than waiting for a cheap MicroServer?

    • ditto. would love to hear what people would recommend out of the four.

    • HP MicroServer N40L is on sale as well!

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66236

      • these servers only do raid 0,1 which is pretty average if you want to use it for a nas

        • +1

software raid can be done for others but why bother!

        • You'd have to be stupid to NOT use software RAID, onboard fake-RAID isn't worth the hassle incase the mobo dies. Software RAID is hardware independent so a safer choice….

But the main thing to be aware is that a HP MicroServer will require work to get it up and running with whatever OS package you choose. Once up and running it will saturate a GigE connection @ ~90MB/s. I doubt these lower powered NAS units could do that!

  • Considering how we - recently - saw $159 buy an External 3 TB Seagate desktop,
I don't see how "each" (presumably 3 TB) disk could be worth $240…?

Or are there 4x 1.5 TB to give 6 TB here?

    • All 4 NAS show 2x3TB as the hard drives.

    • Pccasegear 3TB = $209
      Centrecom 3TB = $229
      MSY 3TB = $199

Yes you can get them cheaper (ie $159) but was that a special 1 day (or less) deal? Were you allowed to buy more than 1?

      • HDD bargains still to be had;
        2 TB $99 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66101
        3 TB $154 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/65567

        • +2

do u really want them shipped from the usa and thrown around dozens of times? if its local ill take it for that price and did from dick smith $159 but no way from amazon man…………

        • Agree with T1000 - buying hdds from the USA could be a bad experience…

        • Just linking to these to show what deals there are, and one of them is local anyway so no worries about handling.

  • The Buffalo's get a lot of crappy reviews on Amazon
    http://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-Technology-LinkStation-LS-WX2-…

    • They do, but its a very nice nas to use & very reliable for me

      • re the buffalo, you want the PRO duo, not the duo. pro duo is faster etc - much better reviews.

  • olc, what rpm are the HDD on the seagate NAS?

    • Hi , it 7200rpm

  • ordered the buffalo duo (bit naughty slugging us $8.30 delivery PLUS 1.5% for Paypal/c'card) = $551.51 delivered
Have been after home NAS for a while and this was one on my shortlist. There seem to be snags with all NAS's of some sort, but this seems to be an OK all-rounder.
6TB was the dealmaker for me. Speed of D/L and U/L not a big issue

  • Mmm That BlackArmor looks nice.
Do these get hot being such small form factor?

  • My experiences with NAS are they often have incredibly slow network transfer speeds. Does anyone know the relative speeds of these different NAS units? I'd be really keen to pick one up.

    • These low end ones would transfer around 30-50MB/s over gigabit. Youll have to spend some dough on higher end Thecus ones to get full 90MB/s over gigabit. Or get the HP Micro server, but you would need a little know how setting it up and it doesn't support raid 5.

  • You might be better off purchasing the Seagate NAS for $264, claiming the $120 rebate from http://www.powerbuy.com.au/offers/seagate-blackarmour-cash-b… then buying drives individually. $619 is a bit pricey.

  • is this better than Synology DS212J 2 Bay NAS Server ???
i never own NAS before.. thanks

  • So is this cheaper than it was on the crazy 8tb deal a while ago?

Hmmm yes and no - that was $600 for 8tb
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/63300?page=1

This is $500 (after cashback) for 6tb - but I prefer the 6tb as it leaves 2 drive bays free for expansion and the 3tb drives are pricier per gb than the 2tb drives….

Very tempted but should I get a qnap instead?

Also thought onlinecomputer baited a bit in that last deal, will this time be different??

Curious also if the warranty here is 3 years for the NAS and drives, or just the NAS?

And if I ran the serial numbers of the drive on the Seagate web site, would they say they have 3 years warranty, or would they say they are OEM drives with no standalone warranty?

    • what cashback? the one on powerbuy says excludes NAS400

      • qouted:
"$100 cash-back is paid on the NAS 400 model, $50 on the NAS 220 range and $30 on the NAS 110 range. Deal excludes the NAS 440 model"

        exclude 440 but include 400

        • oh right

        • basically you can't have any drives with it (which is the NAS440)
so I threw caution to the wind and bought it individually.
