  • Possible to swap out storage for something bigger?

    • +2

Yes, it is possible but very difficult

    • +1

Seems like yes, although the screws are unhelpfully located under the glued-on rubber feet.

These are perfect for students, recently bought one for my 14 year old son and he absolutely loves it. 128GB is enough for him. It still has space to load his favourite games.

    • +14

Much easier nowadays for a teenage boy to manage with 128GB, all the porn is online. Back in my days…

      • +1

Perhaps you'd have had to go with a surface book?

  • How do these compare to the Ryzen laptops? Should I be getting a 16gb model for future proofing?

    • +7

10th Gen Intel + 8GB Ram + Microsoft = not future proof at all, and likely not upgradeable.

Do yourself a favour and get a Ryzen 4th/5th gen and upgradable to 16GB RAM at the very least. Might want to look for other things too like USB C port (charging not just data transfer), fingerprint sensor etc.

Should only cost you $200 more max if you wait for the next deal

daughter is going into yr7 in 2023, sounds like what I need to be getting, got time to look for deals between now and then.

        • Having a touchscreen/being a 2 in 1 is incredibly useful too, don't want to be a Harvey Norman salesperson and try to push something out of budget on to you though haha

          • @pennypincher98: Im using surface pro for work, theyre great. This one looks perfect, the 8gb ram is prob the only thing stopping me getting it.

            • @mrtenacious: Don't think this one has any 2 in 1 capabilities and boots in Windows S mode, meaning you'll need to change it to Windows 10 Home to download any apps not from the Microsoft store.

              • +3

                @pennypincher98: Takes 30 seconds to turn off S mode…

                • @wombat81: Yeah but there's a reason it's in S mode lol. Windows 10 Home will struggle on 4GB ram. If you're referring to the 8GB ram surface laptop you might as well get an upgradable laptop with better specs for a bit more.

                  • @pennypincher98: Would love to find a 12-13" laptop with the specs you're referring to, but I'm yet to find such a unicorn.

The surface laptop go's are popular because there are very few decent alternatives in this form factor.

                    • +1

@wombat81: Acer Spin lineup has a 13.3" screen and has a decent spec sheet. Got one almost 4 years ago and has held up very well. Only paid around $700ish for it too. As long as you avoid Acer Spin 1 it should be fine.

Asus does a 13" 2 in 1 that gets good reviews and Lenovo has a 13.3" too.

                      • @pennypincher98: Acer doesn't currently have any models under 14" that aren't Chromebooks, and their cheapest 14" is $1700 RRP. They have had models in this form factor before, but no longer.

Lenovo's cheapest 13.3" is $1450. They do have some 14" options that are worth a look between $1000 and $1200. But, personally, I was after something smaller than 14", also battery life is an issue with most of them. They do have laptops smaller than 13" but they only have crappy celeron/pentium/athlon processors.

Asus also doesn't have any current models under 14" except for chromebooks and crappy pentiums.

                        • @wombat81:

and their cheapest 14" is $1700 RRP.

Using RRP is flawed as this is not RRP either.
Where did you pull that out of anyway? Literal first result on Google is $899 Ryzen 7/8GB/512GB/2 in 1 versus basic laptop. Not going to bother looking further because you haven't even done a Google search lol.

Maybe for your specific needs and purposes the Surface is one of very few devices, but for the average consumer there's much better options.

                        • @wombat81: Yeah I googled. You said that 13.3" models were available. I googled that and nothing came up. So I went to the manufacturers sites to see what their current models were and found nothing.

As I said, there's nothing decent under 14". As I said there are a few decent 14" models around. But I can't find anything about the 13.3" models you're talking about.

          • @pennypincher98: which one you are talking about? I'm looking one for my son, who will be in year 7 in 3 months
            Thanks

@Averell: Referring to the Surface Laptop Go is just a laptop from what I can see, lightweight and all but has no other features. The other 2 are Windows tablets (their spec sheet doesn't put any faith in being a laptop)

Two good lines are the Lenovo Yoga Flex and Acer Spin (3 or 5 not 1) for 2 in 1 laptops. Have had an Acer Spin for around 4 years now without any issues.

        • +1

This is a great middle school student laptop, imo. I got a 8/128gb model for my daughter in year 6 next year.

      • +1

Might want to look for other things too like USB C port (charging not just data transfer), fingerprint sensor etc.

        Already have both

        Last deal from TGG

        • Well yeah I know lol.
That was for other potential laptops because no one is going to buy this for future proofing as it's already reaching obsolescence.

  • +2

Pretty sure these don’t even have FHD screens. Only the tablet form does.

    • +2

      Resolution: 2256 x 1504

A bit lower than surface pro

      • Seem like the information I found was wrong should be 1,536 × 1,024

      • +2

        Yup, lower than 1080p :(

  • I'm interested in one of the surface go 2s. I can't decide between getting one of these compared to getting an android tablet like an S7 or one of those P11. I'm not sure how much more versatility that these gos have. I'll mainly use it for web browsing, streaming(Plex and Netflix) and some gaming.

    • Depends on whether you want windows or pure Android

BTW windows 11 can do Android app but better to have at least 8GB ram

    • Honestly the P11 seems incredible value for money, the processor in the Surface Go 2 is kinda shit and the 4GB model will be absolutely unusable for gaming.

Mixed up the P11 with this which seems to be P11 Pro

      • I was tempted with that but the lack of updates hurts. I also wish to spend gift card.

    • Depends on what you want to do? Tab s8 apparently is around the corner, I wonder whether that's going to reduce the price of Tab S7.

  • +1

Should I mention all the previous cheaper deals???

    • Yes please to let people know this is not the cheapest 🤪

      • Microsoft usually pricematch.

Then add in 10% xbox giftcard discount + 10% additional shopback and you'll score one for around $650 mark

      • better give them ipad 9 instead of this junk.

        • I was like iPad is expensive. Then I realised that iPad 9th Gen at RRP is $499. :P

  • If anyone's looking for a rugged case, this seems like good value for a reputable brand

  • We bought the i5 Go today for my wife

Harvey norman didn't have a price tag on any of their surface range and despite having 50 odd laptops on display, range under 1k was either chromebooks, nasty HP laptops or Lenovo. ugh
