Cheaper deal than the previous Edu store deal as there's tier 2 discounts available. Never had issues/checks ordering from the Uni stores but as always, ymmv.

Great to see MagSafe is back and 120hz is a huge get as well!

@pixxelpusher: You are dreaming my friend.

              • @Danthemanz: Why? Have you seen the performance of M1 with Parallels? It's already playing a lot of games well. 32-core GPU is 4x that of M1, so should be able to do ok even under virtualization. I also believe within at least 2 years Microsoft will have a native ARM version of Win11 that will possibly run on Apple silicon.

With claims the M1 Max 32-core being at least 2x faster than a Radeon Pro 5600M, that puts it in RTX 3060 / 3070 territory.

In real world, I still game perfectly well on my GTX 1070 PC with an old 8th gen cpu, no problems just tweak the settings.

The GTX 1070 just happens to be similar to a Radeon Pro 5600M… so see why I'm thinking it's going to game ok.

      • I’m not sure why you got negged.

      • Sorry mate. Was supposed to upvote your reply but accidently touched the downvote. Finally figured out how to revoke the downvote.

      • Holy shit, an integrated GPU on an SOC is close to RTX3080??? That would be amazing..

Thanks! Ordered through the regular education store as I didn't realise there was this store as well - cancelled and reordered!

  • +1

Thanks! Canceled my previous order and reordered!!

  • +1

What does it say on invoice? Is it the same invoice as if you purchase it normally?

    • No, the discounted price

      • +2

Does it mention anything about edu?

        • no

  • Hi does anyone know the answer to this question, if I've got say $1k on my Apple account, place an order with Apple for an item thats say $6k, it asks for balance + credit card obviously on checkout. Funds don't get deducted until they actually process the order (December by the looks of it). If between now and then I increase my Apple account balance from $1k to $5k, does the Apple system dynamically adjust to take the $5k out from the Apple balance first? Or will it take $1k and the remainder on credit card, because thats what was selected at checkout? Thanks!

    • I guess the latter, $1k + credit card. Just my guess.

      • That would suck, but so hard to know for sure. Don't want to waste money topping up balance later only to find that it deducted it off my credit card, but also don't want to put off ordering as there's a long wait time on these computers…

        • +3

As far as I can tell, it "locks in" the amount drawn from your Apple account balance at the time you place the order. So unless Apple gives you the option of editing your order later to adjust and increase the amount taken from your Apple account balance, I doubt topping up your balance will actually do anything.

Best to chat to Apple to confirm this, but I highly doubt they will draw more funds from your Apple account balance than was agreed on at the time you originally placed your order.

    • When I pre-ordered my iPhone 13 on Sept 17th, my card wasn't charged til the 22nd when it was dispatched. I have no idea if it'll recalculate gift cards by then though

      • Yea that is exactly my dilemma. I had the same experience, balance wasn't charged for iphone until when they had stock and processed it. So I wonder what would happen when at that time my Apple balance increased….

No bootcamp to windows is a deal breaker to me

    • +1

      Cool.. Kukul..

    • +4

virtual machine seem to work great on the M1 https://www.lifewire.com/your-m1-mac-can-run-windows-faster-…

issue is ARM architecture won't allow you to run most Windows programs anyway, unless you use windows x86 virtualisation - effectively running a virtual machine inside another virtual machine

    • parallels works pretty well

      • I guess you will encounter a lot of problems if you want to play games with it.

        • +1

Honestly, if you really care about gaming, why would you use a Mac? My main use of bootcamp is that when I travel, I prefer to carry just one laptop.

          • +1

@netsurfer: I like to work on my Mac, and don’t want to invest two computers…

  • +8

Macbook Air's and 13" Pro's are so good I don't see many reasons to have something even faster unless you need to do some heavy video editing

    • +8

That's why these are proper "Pro" devices. Photographers, videographers, designers & developers are whom these are aimed at. If you just use it to browse the internet then yes get the Air, but for anyone in these creative fields it's a huge upgrade.

      • +2

Airs and 13 Pro have shown to have incredible capabilities even for Pro stuff, on par or better than i7 and i9 macbook Pros. Obviously these ones are even better, and have better and larger monitors. But I feel many semi-professionals won't feel much pressure to upgrade (given the big expense..)

        • +2

Oh they are definitely more than capable for most people. My partner who is a product & graphic designer has been waiting for these ones though, because the new screen is just that next level compared to the current Pro's.

          • @viperacr: Oh yeah that makes sense, also I guess the 27" iMac, once they fit the M1's, will be the dream machine for graphic designers and video editors

            • +1

@liongalahad: The M1 is a great chip for a lot of things, though I found for me when using it with Handbrake the experience was lacklustre.

I was comparing it to a 5900X granted so it was setup to fail in comparison, but if you're using one of these but if you're in the correct field and needed the portability the M1 did come up short for heavy-ish processing.

Fantastic chip. Really is for most things. I'm actually quite excited for the new chips after being a long term Windows exclusive user and that extra power will definitely come in handy :)

More power, more outputs, and solidly low power requirements is a really great feat.

        • +2

I agree, the value paradigm has changed with Apple Silicon. You used to have to jump to the Pro models to get great performance, but now the M1 can hold its own against some of the best Windows machines.

I use my laptop for development and photography / graphic design, but realised the MBA will likely have more than enough power for what I need at a substantial discount to the MBP. Completely get that there are professionals out there who will benefit from the extra grunt that the MBPs provide, but I think many professionals can get away with an M1 system.

That said, I don't need a new laptop just yet, so I might wait till the redesigned MBA comes out next year. My only hope is that they're able to push dual screens without the issues the M1 has.

    • +1

I personally enjoy having a bigger screen. If they released a 16’ air then I’d jump on that.

I am curious why Apple didn’t make a MagSafe USB C version. I wonder if it’s so they can sell chargers at a premium.

      • +2

The magsafe is detachable and the base powerbrick is USB C. I'm pretty sure.

    • For me it's the hdr capable screen above everything else

    • "I don't see many reasons to have something even faster unless you need to do some heavy video editing"

or….you have a dual external screen and want a proper multi-monitor support. The new MBP is so much better in every way it's definitely worth the small price premium on top of the last year's model.

      • "small price premium" = $3000 (Pro 14 inch) vs $1800 (Air 512GB), i.e. +67% 🤔

not sure for you mate, but in my book $1200 extra is a HUGE price difference on a $1800 laptop….

        • I was comparing MBA 1TB SSD & 16Gb RAM Vs MBP with 1TB SSD & 16Gb RAM. The price difference (educational store) was only $880.
So, considering the MUCH better display, faster CPU, Memory, SSD, Magsafe, ports, speakers, Camera…. You know, better everything… Then, the higher price tag is definitely worth it.

  • +8

Thanks OP! Ordered 16" M1 Max. Most expensive laptop I've ever bought buy a long way (next closest was a 15" macbook pro for $2500). Feels like I should hand in my OzBargain membership…

    • +1

I just ordered the same one as you. My 2014 Macbook Pro has been going well for 7 years now — I've been holding out for the ARM architecture to land in the pro series. And here we are!

      • +2

I have a 2013 Macbook Pro and I am replacing it with one of these. To be fair my 2013 model still runs ok but I just want a new model. It's actually impressive that amount of years you can get with a well specced Macbook Pro. A lot of people complain about the cost of these laptops but the fact you can get over 5 years with them makes them, in my opinion great value for money.

    • +5

Should be fine.. for Apple standards, these Macbooks are well priced + the edu stores. By the looks of it, the sites are now being ozbargainized. From 1 week delivery early this morning, to 4-6 weeks now as of writing. Now, with all these GPU bumps and Vulcan just lurking around the corner, I’m curious what Steam and Apple can do for us in regards to gaming in the future. 😁

      • +2

Yeah I'm looking at the cost over 5 years or so and for the work I do (developer) it seems ok over that time period. My last Macbook Pro lasted 6 years. My biggest fear is dropping it or something.

I'm shocked at the GPU performance - obviously need to wait for some benchmarks but Apple are claiming only slightly lower performance than a mobile RTX 3080 but at way less power usage. Didn't expect to see that kind of GPU performance from something that's not Nvidia or AMD.

        • Well, after the M1 was introduced with all the performance claims last year, and seeing it delivered beyond expectations, i can safely say we know what to expect already with these new Macbooks.

    • +1

Top-tier laptops used to be $7k+ and people don't even know what to do with them!

My first laptop was $5k top-of-the-line Pentium MMX and had whopping 3 hours battery life.

  • +1

Gonna try and get work to get one for me :D.

  • Can you upgrade to 1Tb?

    • For the 16”?

  • +1

"The CPU in M1 Pro and M1 Max delivers up to 70% faster CPU performance than M1".

Dave2D estimated the 16-core M1 Pro could be on the level of AMD’s 5500M, while M1 Max could reach frame rates similar to a mobile RTX 3070.
"You shouldn’t buy a new MacBook Pro for gaming. The M1 Max will certainly boost gaming performance, and it could even rival discrete GPU options from AMD and Nvidia. But the lackluster library of Mac games means you’ll run out of games to play before you get your money’s worth."

M1 Max - buy it for creative work, not for gaming.

So the M1 Pro looks like the sweet spot?

  • +1

I just signed up to Flybuys, went to Coles.. got 5x $500 gift cards and came home and ordered. Same as I did at Woolies a few weeks back with their 30x points and ordered new phones!

ATM, no points balane" showing up in Flybuys account but keeping my reciept

    • Do we have to wait for the flybuys points to show up in the account before buying on the Apple store?

    • Flybuys usually take time. A few days atleast

  • Using the M1 16GB for adobe apps & find it more than sufficient for my graphics design needs.
No way there is that many people who are using these laptops to their full potential professionally unless it's for gaming…
Also mobility in the air is unrivalled imo.

    • So are going to upgrade from the Air?

      • Nah, Mac Mini M1 16GB is good enough.
This looks like an awesome new toy though!

    • +1

Also mobility in the air is unrivalled imo.

There are still people with the 12” hoping Apple will bring it back into the lineup

      • Indeed. I'm surprised they didn't already given that would've been the perfect form factor to show off the M1.

  • +1

Its taken me 3 years to get use to and learn to love the touch bar and now they get rid of it.

    • +9

They didn’t get rid of yours..

    • 5 years without an update, you must have worked very hard at that!

  • Can someone explain where the discount is? The store just shows one price.

    • This is the price for the Education store, so no further discount on Edu store

      • +1

Yeah so the retail price for the base 16-inch Pro is $3,749.00 vs $3331 on the AOC Edu store

  • When are we expecting MacBook Air refresh?

    • +2

      Mid 2022 apparently

  • Is this worth it for your normal casual use + coding(python/R) on a regular basis? I've got the 2020 Intel Version
I can salary sacrifice but still….

    • +1

No, wait a few years and pick up a regular M series. Definitely overkill, even for statistics.

    • +1

      Way overkill.
If you value mobility & battery life go with the m1 air.

  • NotchPro

  • +1

spoke to apple. and they said i can only use max 8 gift cards.
So does anyone know where i can get some at a discounted price?

    • +2

      15% off: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/656176

(And just add the gift cards to your Apple Account balance … so you can have as many as you want … and then pay with that.)

      • +1

However you can’t pay in store with your account balance.

        • You can just place an online order. Wouldn't that be more convenient?

      • Can you redeem FlyBuys points for cash?

      • i would very much prefer a straight discount instead of flyby points. As i never use/want them. bummer.

    • Just load the giftcard into you itunes account. You're allow a maximum of $4k I think.

  • Damn, I've got the i9 16" but I won't lie the new MBP's look tempting at these prices. Especially with that 120hz Mini-LED screen and the 14" form factor. Going to wait for the benchmarks and reviews before deciding though. The resell on the old 16" still seem pretty strong, so won't be too out of pocket if I do decide to upgrade…

    • You can expect the reviews to rave about them really highly. Apple really beefed up the video rendering part big time and that will make the youTubers really happy. 120Hz mini LED display.

Before the reviews are out, the laptops are already essentially out of stock and pretty much in pre-order status.

  • -2

This is an EPP deal, so unless you belong to the Australian Education Union its targeted at you might be audited and have the order cancelled. Its not the same as using the standard education store (I've never heard of this being checked).

Just something to keep in mind. If its ozbargained its even more likely they might notice a sudden unexpected surge of sales through a particular EPP.

    • Yeah. I think this deal is like 2-3% better than Edu.

  • +1

    FYI to potential buyers

I had ordered a new one this morning via regular store, was going to recieve next week. I cancelled to make an order on the edu store, now its coming mid november.

    • +1

Could be coz i ordered it a few hours later, or the fact that i upgraded it to the 10c cpu 16 gpu, or it could be coz its apple edu store

      • +1

Probably because it was a different model and there are more people in the queue. I did the same thing cancelled and reordered on edu but delivery is still the same day next week for me.

      • +2

I think the 10c CPU and 16GPU is going to be a very popular model. It's where the power increase is really noticeable without having to go into "I need to sell my car for this" territory.

    • +1

Likely you got in first this morning, or if you changed your order to a custom spec (not a standard model) it's now built to order which pushes back timelines considerably.

  • +1

Ordered a 16inch Pro with M1 Pro Max and 32 Unified memory! Cant wait!

  • Hi Ozbargain fellow, may I have some help?

I bought some giftcards but not loaded into my account yet,

When I go to the Apple Edu store and checkout, I see no option to pay using apple balance (logged in already),

Also it said 8 giftcards cannot be used in split payment, did I miss any step here?

    https://imgur.com/a/8hleL03

    Thank you very much

    • +2

How can you pay by balance if you not yet loaded the cards?

      Your options:
      1. redeem the cards https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT211163 so you pay by balance (if you have more than 8 GCs)
      2. pay by GCs (see the 'Enter the gift card number in you screenshot, max 8 cards in single transaction)

      • +1

Thank you I just order, The pay with Apple balance option only appears when you had any balance in your account. Obviously, I panicked when making a big purchase
