MacBook Pro: 14" 8-Core CPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD $2658.70; 16" 10-Core $3311 @ Apple On Campus (e.g. Australian Education Union)

2660

Cheaper deal than the previous Edu store deal as there's tier 2 discounts available. Never had issues/checks ordering from the Uni stores but as always, ymmv.

Great to see MagSafe is back and 120hz is a huge get as well!

    • Interesting it's been said it's like a 3080 however going off teraflops:

      3080 maxq =
      FP16 (half) performance
      15.30 TFLOPS (1:1)
      FP32 (float) performance
      15.30 TFLOPS

      6800m =
      FP16 (half) performance
      26.43 TFLOPS (2:1)
      FP32 (float) performance
      13.21 TFLOPS

I think apple is milking the interpretations do they state what FP ratio they are using, as you can see from amd they say 2:1 and so 26.43 vs nvidia 1:1 for FP16. Also I wonder what difference using shared system memory LPDDR5 is like vs GDDR6 🤔

      • I wouldn't think of it that way to be honest. Apple is not pushing the power envelope on the GPU and clearly there is a lot of room for Apple to push both the CPU and GPU. How much will Apple tap into that huge reserve for M2 Max? Apple is using more powerful power adapters for M1 Pro / Max, despite them consuming less power than Intel CPU + AMD GPU combo.

As for the memory speed difference, I am guessing that's cost related although M1 Max's 400GB/s memory bandwidth is decent enough and the shared memory architecture means it could tab into more of that 32GB memory pool. M1 Max starts with minimum 32GB memory.

The next Apple device to be refreshed is the Mac Pro. Lucky for nVidia, gaming on Mac isn't going to take off big time (at least not any time soon).

  • Anyone know how long Apple takes to put payment through after ordering?

    • +1

      According to the Web:

When your order goes from Processing to Preparing to Ship, your payment method will be charged at that time. Preauthorisation is still going to take place at the time of the order.

      • Ok great, so probably 3 weeks from now.

  • Which one of the these GPU cores would be a replacement for a RTX2060?

Would need a new laptop next year, will only be running Autocad.

  • what delivery dates is everyone seeing, I am getting late nov/early dec

    • 16th to 23rd Nov for me. Ordered around 3pm AEST.

I think it also depends on the config you selected.

      • looks like it. I went for the 64 gig with 32 cores and 1 TB ssd. thinking that would be standard config. obviously not :/

        hopefully they pick up speed.

    • Second week of Nov for 14" base

  • +2

    Notch on a laptop screen?
    No thanks

I will probably buy the MacBook Air or iPad Pro instead

    • That's what they have to play around for next 5 years.

    • Let's hope the Macbook Air M2 won't copy that. Also, will PC laptop makers start copying that notch? The thought of that worries me. Is notch on future laptops going to become the new norm?

    • +1

You can just colour in the extra screen with black permanent marker so that you have the old bezels back.

  • Thinking about cancelling my current order with the 67w charger and paying the $28.60 extra for 96w. Would see fast charging come in handy in layovers when travel opens back up again. Although will add 1-2 weeks to delivery.

    Thoughts?

If I cancel, does my credit using gift cards automatically apply back to my Apple ID instantly?

Is fast charging even an option on the 8 core 14 inch?

    • +2

Pay the $28.60 extra and get the 96W if you want it, rather than keep thinking about it. Payment side, rather than ask OZBers, call Apple Sales or Support to find out.

If you don't care about the <30 minute fast charging (from 0-50%), then don't worry.

    • Fast charging is an option for the 8 core. I am just going to use the 67w dont really care about the fast charging.

    • +1

Fast charging is something you dont realise you need until certain situations present ie when you find yourself with limited time to charge before heading out.

  • Is this a long running deal with Edu store? When major retailers start to sell these series, will they offer similar discounts?

  • -2

    Dear Apple,

    I am awaiting:
    - A touch screen MacBook Pro
    - A real mouse pointer on my iPad Pro
    - An USB-C chargable Magic Mouse (and one that can be usable while charging)
    - Wirelessly charge my iPhone from a MacBook Pro or iPad Pro (power sharing when travelling light)
    - Apple TV 4K support for Hi-Res Lossless greater than 48 kHz

Not interested in workarounds as I have tried almost all out there.

    • An USB-C chargable Magic Mouse (and one that can be usable while charging)

But… in 2 minutes of charging, you get 9 hours worth of power on the Magic Mouse 2!! I mean - charge it whilst you go to the bathroom or something?

    • Touch screen Mac will never happen

iPad already has a real mouse pointer. If thats what you really want, buy the Magic Keyboard

      I have :

iPad Pro 12.9" with Magic Keyboard for travel
Macbook 13" for work and portability if I need more than the iPad
New M1 Max 16" for powerhouse mostly at home but can be portable if I need

  • Hmmm…. I've never heard about Education Union store…

So… technically… regular student's won't be eligible for that, right?
I know the probability of the check is not high.
But keeping me fair - being a plain student I am not eligible for this extra discount, right?

  • +1

Just to clarify. Who can purchase from the AOC?

    • "Available to current and newly accepted university students, parents buying for university students, and teachers and staff at all levels.*"

  • Good laptop. I believe this one will serve for many years.

  • Does Cashrewards or Honey work on this "AOC" education site? I can activate cashrewards on the regular education site but this "AOC" education site won't let me activate the 1.5% cashback.

    • +1

According to a few earlier comments, no.

  • Thanks OP. Should remember to use AOC more often!

  • Anyone know if the OzBargain classifieds is still a thing? I've got a left over Apple Voucher to sell…

  • Does anyone know if the new MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro could run 3x external QHD monitors natively (I.e without DisplayPort protocol) or would I need to go to the M1Max? - I read the official specs but still unsure cheers

    • +1

Not sure, the specs are a bit confusing.

Up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz in over a billion colours (M1 Pro), or up to three external displays with up to 6K resolution and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz in over a billion colours (M1 Max)

They talk about 2 x 6K so it might support 3 QHD monitors.

      • +1

From what I've heard with M1, the limitation isn't necessarily only bandwidth - it might actually not do 3 external displays if it doesn't say it can.

  • -2

Any guesses on what the best value proposition in terms of specs are to get for the 14 and 16" laptops?

    • Come on, this varies for each individual's needs and wants.

  • +1

Looks like if Apple checks and deems that someone is ineligible to use this discount they'll deduct full price from their payment card. It's in the T&Cs.

    • Yes I checked with their support staff. They said the audit is done at random and not on every purchase. So your luck may vary. There might also be factors flagging certain transactions to be worthy of an audit as well (of-course i'm speculating that last part, but in a data driven era it's a very high possibility)

    • +2

T&Cs I read state they’ll cancel and refund

    • Oh boy.

      Can you link their T&Cs?

I'm OK with them cancelling and refunding — I'm eligible for a student discount through University, but not if they just go ahead and charge full price when the invoice didn't state that price.

Though actually, it might not be too bad since I also remember Apple products are subject to a 14-day full refund as long as the item is in original condition regardless if the package is open or not.

      • +1

The Aus Education store only confirm eligibility before the order is dispatched, as shown in the Aus Edu Store Sales terms available at https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/shop/browse/open/salesp…

"We may require evidence of your eligibility. We reserve the right to cancel some of or part of your order if we become aware that you are not a student, teacher or lecturer as set out above or if your purchases are not for your own personal, education, or research use. If we cancel your order in these circumstances, we will inform you in writing and refund any money that you may have paid."

        • Oh, that's fine then. It's just cancellation and refund the paid amount.

Because the comment I replied to implies if you're not eligible they'll charge the full amount.

  • For those who have bought from the AOC Education Store - who is the seller on the tax invoice? Is it just Apple or does it say AOC Education Store?

    • Haven't received one yet. Based on my experience with the iPhone 13 an invoice wasn't sent until it was shipped.

    • +1

It's from Apple, no mention of AOC Education Store

  • +1

Ordered a 14-inch MacBook Pro with 10-core CPU this morning. The order says it should arrive by 24/11/2021. So more than a month away. Can't wait to experience this killer machine. My mid 2014 Macbook Pro has served me 7 years without a single glitch. Time to upgrade.

  • What spec model are people going for?

    • +1

When speccing the 13" MacBook pro to 16gb/512gb, it comes pretty close in price to the base 14" MacBook, so IMO, it was pretty worth spending the extra 400 or so AUD to get the new features (and of course, bragging rights).

However, upgrading the base 14" with the binned cores to what Apple advertised is definitely NOT worth $400 in my use case.

So from that logic, I'm sure that most people in the market for a new MacBook pro and DON'T have a job that requires the power of m1 pro will go for the base 14". People who will use these laptops to generate their income will buy the 10/16 m1 pro with upgraded ram, whilst a small percentile will actually go for specc'd out m1 max.

      • I wouldn't consider the extra $400 as close between 13"MBP (16GB/512GB) and base 14" MBP, but I think it is definitely worth the extra $400 for the new screen and extra features.

  • Did anybody got actually audited? Please share

    • +2

I picked my order up from the Apple Store and they didn't ask or check

      • Congrats! How do you find the new MBP?

      • Was store pick-up an option? I dont remember seeing that option when I placed the order.

  • There is a limit of 1 laptop per academic year, right?

    • +1

      Yes.

  • -1

    FYI everyone, here's the T&C

    Audit Rights

Apple routinely audits the purchases of customers at the Apple Store for Education to ensure that all purchase conditions have been observed. Should we discover that you have not observed all of the conditions applicable to your purchase, you authorize Apple:

If you placed your order by credit card, to charge to your credit card the difference between the amount you paid for the delivered goods and the price that Apple charged the general public for the same goods at the Apple Store, in effect on the date that you placed your order; and

If you paid by a means other than credit card, to (a) invoice you for the difference between the amount that you paid for the delivered goods and the price that Apple charged the general public for the same goods at the Apple Store, payable in fifteen days from the date of the invoice, and (b), should you fail to pay the invoice when due, institute legal action against you in a court of competent jurisdiction, with the prevailing party entitled to attorneys' fees.

    • +1

Full refund when you receive the product then. That’s the beauty of Apple products.

      • Not going to work if you get selected for an audit after the purchase. I read on ozb of a guy who got audited two months after purchase. Wouldn’t surprise me if that is the case moving forward given the volume of sales for these (and the popularity of the aoc union store)

    • +1

Where did you find those terms? I can't see them on the AU HED page. Link?

    • +4

Is there a link to this, I was able to only find this on the Canada, India, and UAE education stores. The Aus edu store makes no mention of audit rights, instead saying "We may require evidence of your eligibility. We reserve the right to cancel some of or part of your order if we become aware that you are not a student, teacher or lecturer as set out above or if your purchases are not for your own personal, education, or research use. If we cancel your order in these circumstances, we will inform you in writing and refund any money that you may have paid."

      This is available at https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/shop/browse/open/salesp…

One of the links of your version is at https://www.apple.com/ae-edu/shop/open/salespolicies

Negged because inappropriate - op is bragging about using uni discount stores without being eligible for it. Of course it’s a bargain but do you really think apple NEVER does audits? Of course they do. Why would you promote this workaround to others then.. people could get in trouble because of your poor advice

    • Agree, poor apple going broke :( LOL

    • +1

You’re projecting, I’ve been working in higher education for the past 8 years.

      • +4

It seems like they are on a mission to make sure we don't purchase using the AOC EPP store.
Just look at how many times they have posted the same warning about audit rights.
Use a burner Apple ID, and C&C.

        • -1

Do you have a burner Apple ID and C&C?

      • -2

I’m not on a mission to change peoples mind, I’m just expressing my views on this

  • Anyone going to cancel due to potential audits after the 2 week refund period? I’m hesitant to purchase as I’m not part of the AOC.

    • Woah, they audit after it's been delivered?! I assumed before.

      • Based on the posts above, it appears to be random. I think if you don't qualify for the EDU or AOC discount, its better to wait for the JB 10% off deals…

        • I still don't understand the difference between EDU and AOC.
Didn't even know AOC exists until this post.

      • -1

After. First they take the money of course. Then they look into it, if you’re eligible all good. If not they send you a bill. It’s actually a win for them, they get more sales

Of course “if you’re lucky” like op you don’t get audited.

        • +1

Not sure why you're so sure what's going to happen. Have you been audited yourself? Doing it after they have despatched doesn't really make any sense as they can't decide whether you are eligible or not without asking you questions and asking for proof etc.. and if you ignored them what could they do? You might be eligible but just not want to talk to them, you aren't obligated to. It makes far more sense that they'd check eligibility before despatching and just cancel the order if you don't respond. Anything else is just unworkable to be honest.

It sounds to me like they don't check eligibility at all based on many people's reports. But if they did decide to at random it would surely be before despatch.

          • -1

@chiefbodge: I’m not making it up it’s in the t&c

            • @Nedkellyinthebush: Can you link to the t&c's? We're having trouble finding that segment

              • @readerr0r: That is because this guy is speaking complete bollocks.

So desperate to spread misinformation and FUD.

                Answer me this.

                1. I use a VPN.
                2. Create a completely new Apple ID separate from my usual one.
                3. Use gift cards to place the order, and pick up my laptop via Click & Collect.

If after 2 weeks I get audited (completely unlikely), how is Apple going to issue me a bill / debt notice? More importantly, how will they enforce it as they did not perform any IDV prior to the purchase?

The audit happens prior to the order fulfillment not afterwards.

      • +8

  • I know this is dirty and all, but what's Apple's official stance on selling AOC laptops? I am a university student and upon consideration, I don't think the 8 core CPU and 14 core GPU is right for me. I know you can cancel the order but… you know.

It's not going to be the end of the world if I can't sell it, It would just be better.

  • 14.5% discount from Officeworks with 5% price beat against 10% off sales.
    Stock 14" would be $2564

    • Where is the link to this OW sale? Please post.

      • Its not a sale, its a price beat & only for a couple of hours when competitors have a 10% off sale

        • +1

I think a lot of us want to buy one now, not waiting for whenever the next 10% off sale is on.

    • Tempting but you will have to wait awhile I think since these are new and likely to be out of stock for awhile but great deal if you're willing to wait.

I've got a late 2013 MBP and it's served me well (got a edu discount for this as well, I asked JB if they did it and they never asked to see my ID… don't think they really cared). I find it plently fast for browsing, emails, ect but it struggles with Adobe CC. Oh that and the battery expanded which means it rocks, can't close the lid all the way, and I've had to disable to the track pad or it goes haywire. I think the graphics card is on it's way out too because I sometimes get these weird ghosting on photos.

I'm excited to see the improvements in speed and screen, though funny enough all the things they brought back (magsafe, function keys, sd card are all on my current MBP.

    OZRRP strikes again

    • +1

Come on, the prices on the title are not RRP, they have education discount (for targeted people only, not for everyone).

      • Agree, this “offer” is targeted. I suppose Apple should have some validation in place before a purchase can be completed, like unidays etc. I’m going to wait for 10% off deal and OW price match!

  • +5

A word of advice: if you are thinking about cancelling order and order a different configuration, don’t!! Apple will cancel any order exceeding the below limits.

With your current order, you will have exceeded the product quantities (listed below) allowed per academic school year that can be purchased on the Apple Store for Education. Since we’re unable to process orders that exceed the quantity limits, your order has been cancelled. We will request an authorisation reversal within three business days.
    Desktop: One (1) unit
    Mac mini: One (1) unit
    Notebook: One (1) unit
Display: Up to two (2) units
Software: Up to two (2) titles
iPad: Up to two (2) units (can be a combination of any models)

    • Does this mean we have to wait until next year, or 365 days from now?

      • +1

        Resets Calendar year

  • has anyone’s delivery date disappeared?

mine previously said “Arrives Wednesday”, now it says “Arrives [blank]” and “available to ship null”

    • +2

      From another place:

i ended up calling them! he went and confirmed with some other people about the "null" & "arrives" and he said it's the first time it's ever happened but as soon as they do ship, the date comes back cause then it'll get updated. he said the date you got in your email would be the correct shipping date if you can't see your web order!

    • Same here :(

  • Has anyone had any luck price matching the AOC education store at JB HiFi or any other physical retailer?

    • Yeh nah, tried before with the Macbook air M1 but they won’t as the AOC/Education store are targeted ongoing discounts. Best thing you can do is wait for the usual 10% Apple Macs discounts from JB then price beat it with Officeworks to get extra 5%. That’s if you can wait for God knows when.

      • Thanks for letting me know!

  • Noob Question but what does AOC stand for?
Also, If I order one for my sons school use, (Goes to high school). If I get asked for verification if I provide his student ID would it be fine?

    • I think Apple on Campus, not all schools are part of the program. I believe that's why the discount is higher than the regular education discount.

I think the education discount is only for university students, I'm happy to be corrected though.

  • +2

FYI I placed an order this morning for a 16" M1 Max/32GB/1TB and it's already to pickup. Looks like stock has been added this morning, get in quick!

I wasn't sure between space grey and silver, what are people thinking?

    • Did you purchase click n collect via AOC/edu? Do you think they’ll ask you for credentials (Student Id etc) when you pick it up later in an Apple store?
