Can I weld an exhaust with this?

    • -1

If you have to ask, you won't have the skill.
arc is more suited to thick metal
      .

      • +9

So yes, and I'll develop the skill

        • Car exhaust? Maybe 1mm thin? Yeah nah
          .

        • +3

I have never welded in my life either but I purchased one to learn the skill. It could come in handy around the home or car.

          • @Windows7forever: should buy a welding machine for what project you plan on using it for.. MIG would be easier to learn and more universal than ARC. ie. thinner metals.

Should do a short course at TAFE and then the rest is practice.

            • @Dr Techno: yep, I did that 100 yrs ago. Tafe excellent. Just check power requirement. Some points at home drop out at 10amp .I put in a 15 so I could use full power when I was making a trailer. MIG is good but wind is a pain outside. Coated wire with MIG would be better but expensive.

          • @Windows7forever: It's a cheap way to get started for sure.

But don't skimp on PPE..get an auto darkening helmet and gloves

            • +1

@edrift: But you can get that summer sunburned look for $49 … and snow blindness too. It's like all the seasons at once.

              • @Quarn: Try "Sunburn on the retina" kicking in @ ~ 2:00 am…

            • +1

@edrift: Will store this until I can get a auto darkening helmet for 5 bucks, this is the way

    • Better off with TIG or MIG welding for car exhaust.

    • +4

Yes you can I have welded exhausts with a stick welder
clean the area to be welded lower the amps and use thinner rods start with spot/tack welds
It probably wont be the sexiest of welds compared to a mig but if its under the car and does its job who cares?

      • thanks for the advice

    • +3

Yes you can. It will be difficult and likely not look pretty, but it is possible.

I stick welded my exhaust. First time ever using a welder. Blew many holes through. Quite frustrating but a good learning experience

  • 100amps is quite small for an arc welder it seems.
Would this limit its uses much?

    • +2

      Depends what you are welding.

I've always turned mine right down to stop.blowimg holes through things.

    • Just use smaller rods for these small welders :)

  • So tempted, only have to buy this and gloves, mask, wire and learn to weld so I can occasionally fix those balcony railings

    OR

Pay someone else to do it

    • +4

It'll pay itself off in one job.

Auto darkening helmet is about $50 off Ebay, rods are $20 a pack, gloves surprisingly cheap $10.

Tradie call out fee - same cost before they've even started working.

      • edrift Auto darkening helmet is about $50 off Ebay

just a bit of information on those cheap auto darkening helmets is if you are doing a lot of small quick welds or welding in a difficult position you do get a little welders flash they are better suited for the bigger longer welds
i prefer the head nod with a traditional welders helmet and always grab that over the auto darkening one i have

        • So someone on here posted something about them.

I think I watched the YouTube video too.

Apparently the passive lenses are enough to protect you against most of the dangers, even if the auto darkening is slightly delayed.
I don't weld a whole bunch afaik my helmet is ok.

          • @edrift: Correct, the UV is filtered all the time. The auto darken is just lowering light levels. So no real risk to your eyes if slow to darken.

        • I could not do without an auto darkening helmet so I don't have align the rod and then nod my head to close the visor. A fantastic tech gadget :)

Time to learn how to weld

    • +1

      How hard can it be…

  • 49 bucks, worth a go given that it comes with a warranty.

    Great find, thanks

  • can we use this one to weld beam for retaining wall or fencing?

    • Yes

  • Thanks OP, got the last one at my local for 39 with the discount. Took 10 Min to activate but luckily no one else bought it

  • +1

Just a word of warning. It overheats quite easily and takes a while to cool down before you can start welding again as it does not have a cooling fan. I had to install a 12cm inside my similar welder to assist with the cooling.

    • Strange. On the specs is says it has a cooling fan. How did you install a fan? did you solder it to the main board?

      • My mistake. The one I got was from ALDI which did not have a fan and I had to wire a 12cm 240V fan inside. The 10% duty cycle means 6 minutes of welding in 1 hour which is only OK for a very small job.

  • Did the tafe course on stick welding over 5 thursday nights last year, can't recommend it enough.
Ended up with a renegade stick welder off marketplace which does great for the price, plenty of people seem to muck it up once and never try again.
Made myself up a fireplace from a 44 gallon drum and some star pickets, works a treat.

    • +1

I did similar course a while ago over 10 weeks at another VUT TAFE which was fantastic :)

    • Is it an indoor or outdoor fireplace? I have no idea what that might look like

      • +1

Sorry, meant a firepit. Cut a barrel in half and made a frame out of star pickets. Welded it all up together and it works great
