Good price and it is Wifi 6. Kaspesky only worth $10~ tbh. But still a catch overall. Hope this helps.

  • Anyone have this router?, worthy upgrade from the RT-AC68U?

    • +2

Good Upgrade tbh. Considering it is an ASUS and it is Wifi 6. However if you have an extra $100 go for the ASUS AX86U or AX88U. I heard really good thing.

      • Thanks for the response,
Yeah if i could get the AX86U for only $100 more i would but it is about $200 more, now time to consider this upgrade haha

      • +2

Yep that's what I did. Retired my RT-AC68U and purchased a AX88U. Bit weird looking, but noticeable improvements and worth the upgrade (I paid about $380 for the AX88U).

        • Out of interest, are you considering using AiMesh and keeping the AC68U operating as a wired node? If so, I'd be keen on your experiences as I'm considering the same, with the AC68U starting to struggle on the fringes of our long house during lockdown with 5 people working remotely.

          • @GunnaF: That was my thinking initially, but the performance gain and uplift in coverage (for both 2.4g and 5g) saved me from needing to set up an AiMesh.

I would've tested AiMesh in wired mode, but running a cable is not convenient with the layout of my home. I also read up on AiMesh as a wireless node, but decided against that as it didn't review well.

I have this Router and it's better than the default one that iiNet gave me. Much better at handling me and my 3 flatmates devices.

The only issue I have had with it is it bumps my Xbox off the network sometimes when I don't play it for ages. Which is annoying when a big COD download comes down. Other than that it's been faultless.

    • Honestly? if you add a good wifi 6 AP to the 68U it'd likely match or beat this in actual use.

    • I have it, it didn’t work with my iiNet HFC broadband until I updated the firmware via USB.

    • I don’t have it so can’t comment.

  • I have asus RT-AC87U, is it worth the upgrade?

  • ☹️just bought this last week from eBay afterpay deal at $296

  • +2

I think you are better off getting the Asus RT-AX58U which is the same class as this router but supports Merlin firmware.

  • If you were looking at upgrading to Wifi 6, would it be better to wait for 6E routers?

    • +1

Dont wait for 6E. It will be 1- 3 years away before Australia even implements it and a few years after that for it to be perfected.

    • -1

am still on AC68. just checked Merlin site, no firmware for this yet

    • +2

      No, for two reasons:
      1. WiFi 6E gear will be even more expensive so will have to wait even longer for the price to level out.
2.. WiFi 6E uses the 6 GHz band and I think the communication authority here in Australia is still working on getting this band approved for WiFi use, so it may take a while. https://www.acma.gov.au/consultations/2021-04/rlan-use-5-ghz…

I don't think companies will release WiFi 6E routers until there is approval in Australia.

      • Thank you. Any basic NBN modems I should look at for Bridge mode? I have the Vodafone Hub at the moment which for some reason weird doesn't do bridge.

        • Is your nbn FTTN?

          • @Twix: I'm in an apartment so it's FTTB I believe.

            • @jeppetto367: Double check for me. What problems are you having with the Voda hub?

              • @Twix: Yeah its FTTB. I just find the reach isn't too good around the apartment and can lag in the bedrooms. I bought a cheap TP Link AC1200 router and use that in AP mode but it doesn't seem to help much. Even my PS5 I have to run through a Powerline adapter and its only 5m away from both routers. Figured if I get a good Router it might solve it, though would need a modem too due to Voda Hub not doing Bridge. I do have a lot of Wifi devices though so thought that may affect my range? 15ish Wifi lights, 2 TVs, 2 consoles, 2 soundbars, 3 iPhones/iPads, 4 Google Homes, etc, not all at once but a lot connected.

                • @jeppetto367: Having a lot of devices on Wi-Fi doesn't affect the Wi-Fi range. The problem with some apartments is having lots of concrete and bricks.

                  1. keep the Voda hub, turn off it's Wi-Fi and plugin a Ubiquiti Lite or U6 Lite AP for Wi-Fi.
                  2. find a cheap TP-Link VDSL2 modem + TP-Link Deco M9.
                  3. TP-Link Archer VR2800 VDSL2 modem/router.
  • Can someone knowledgeable tell me if I should get this deal or the TP-LINK AX5400 at the good guys commercial for $212?

    Thanks

  • +1

I purchased this and saw horrible speeds on my WiFi 6 enabled devices.
My default TPlink WiFi 5 router was better.

I also had it replaced twice by Amazon (they do have incredible customer service).
Ensured the latest firmware was up to date on all devices, honestly it was a solid two weeks of madness for me.

About 5 meters and a wall away I was lucky to hit 20MB/s transfer to my home server (which was connected via LAN), which was more sporadic and less reliable on 5GH/z than my AC device.
Not sure if anyone that has this has actually used it to transfer over lan, or just using it for internet. If you are just using it for the internet, I doubt you are saturating your current wifi bandwidth unless you have a 250 plan.

Returned them all and just wired the house up with Ethernet cable, shot a very detailed complaint to Asus that went nowhere.

    • That’s a pain, mine has been a massive improvement over the supplied ABB modem/router.

  • I have the RT-AC59U v2, is the upgrade worthy?

    • +1

      Absolutely worth the upgrade

  • This is probably the dumbest question ever asked but I am a complete noob with wifi/Ethernet. Can this router be used with nbn connection hfc?

    • +3

Yes, im using ASUS AX3000 for my HFC atm.

      • +1

I use this with HFC, connect nbn box (NTD) to this. Pretty easy setup and been happy with it. Reaches 2 levels down with 2 bars of wifi signal. Never had issues since I purchased in April. Paid $269 (amazon) after just missing a ~$240 deal from umart.

  • Just itching for the AX86U and/or AX88U to come out around that $300~ mark again. Missed out on last months deal when the AX86U was $329 at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/644099

    :'(

p.s dont forget the 2% cashback for new sign up >.<

  • I was considering this or paying the extra for the AX88U, anyone know what the concurrent device limit is for either of them?

  • +3

IMO I believe ASUS makes the best routers and I dont look at any other brands tbh. Which ASUS router will depend on your budget.

    • If your budget is around $250 go for the ASUS TUF-AX3000
    • If your budget is around $350 go for the ASUS AX86U/AX88U

Any of these products are very good and will 'future proof' yourself (with wifi 6 and the asus 'ax') a few good years.
P.s wifi 6e is long away and not worth waiting (for us Australians so dont stress).

    • what about Asus Xt8 Mesh Routers?

is that comparable to ASUS AX86U/AX88U?

    • What's the diff between the 2? When I was in the market for a new router, I couldn't find a discernible difference so I went for the cheaper model.

  • Price now increased to $ 289.00 AUD

  • As someone who's on his 2nd Asus router, I would have no hesitation recommending an Asus

I do have this particular model for a few months and it's good to see (or bad depending on your perspective), there's been 1 firmware upgrade so far.

    Real life speeds:
In the same room as the router:
I'm getting nearly 100MB/s speed on speedtest

    Upstairs:
I'm getting about 670MB/s on the same laptop, same server on speedtest

P/S I was very fortunate enough to have been offered a 6month trial of 1Gbps plan from Aussie Broadband

  • I have this modem and I just bridged it with a FTTN modem, works really well so far. I haven't had any issues with it. Had it for about 6 months.

  • Only if they fix the 5G band disappearing issue. Went through 3 ac86u and finally just returned and got the refund

  • I have had this router for half a year. Personally I don't feel much improvement comparing to AC68U. Better go for AX86U. (only playing cod, prime video streaming, and normal works at home)

  • Anyone know if this has ethernet backhaul when running in ai mesh?

    • +1

I was actually looking into this today. Ethernet backhaul is possible so it will free up the wi-fi a bit.

I've ordered an AX88U for the main router and this as the secondary one.

  • I got a netgear r7000 nighthawk.Just wondering if this would be sensible upgrade …
