  • it's worth noting that according to reviews these don't have a "power switch" mode, in that they have to be continuously on at the power source to be functional.

i wouldn't use these for the main room lights and only use them for lamps and secondary light sources

it would be exceptionally annoying to have to pull out the phone to turn on lights as you walk around

perhaps a software update could change or someone with first hand experience could comment on the above

    • check below for first hand tests

light can be switched off and on instantly if no schedule is enabled
      or
off for 3 seconds then on if schedule is set

to override if you don't have device on you to operate remotely

    • Do you mean that you can have the power switch in off mode, but the bulb can still function?

I don't know of any that have that feature. All the "smart" bulbs I've used need to be left on at the switch so that power flows through, it essentially moves the switch to the bulb so that you can control it via the Internet or HomeAssistant, etc, on a phone, tablet, smart speaker, etc.

      • no, all the devices essentially need the power "on".

the main ones i've been using have been the shelly 1's. They are hardwired into 240V and it controls a relay via the switch. So if you don't have the app, the power switch functions exactly like the device wasn't there. This is the sort of functionality I was after with this bulb which has been confirmed to be the case, if you don't have a schedule running.

I didn't want to be stuck with having to use an app to turn on every light in the house

  • I just bought a bundle last week. I was also concerned about this issue especially with others commenting in the past. I can confirm that the firmware for these have been updated. You can now turn them off at the switch and turn them back on again and they will connect seamlessly. They have also updated the app so that you can automate them according to different conditions such as weather, device status and time. E.g turn lights on when it's cloudy. Highly recommended cheap smart bulbs.

    • the reconnection was one of the issues but the other is that you can't manually override it to have it come on based on the light switch turning on.

think like the old school outdoor automatic detection lights, a quick off and on will override the timer and set it to on

can you verify if you can manually turn on the lights at the power source/switch to override or essentially set the light to 'on' without a smart phone or other 'smart' device to turn it on?

      • If I turn the light off via the app, I can then turn it off at the physical switch too. Once the physical switch is in the off position, you've physically disconnected it from the wifi. The app will now show that the light is offline. If I then turn the light on at the physical switch, the light will turn on like a normal light and it will reconnect to your wifi and be accessible via the app too

        • once it reconnects to the wifi, does it remain on?

i've bought these to try them out myself anyway but the main thing is

Light is off by remote, On by switch. You want to turn it on, so your options are

          1) turn on by smart device
          2) turn light switch off, then on again

but for option 2, does the light stay on? or does it only stay on until it reconnects to wifi and then realises it should be off, then turns itself off?

          • @peter05: I've just tried this out. So I've set a schedule on the app to turn the light off at a certain time.
Now your options are to turn it on via the app, or you can turn the physical switch off for about 10 seconds, then turn it back on, and the light will stay on.

            • @cynical17: thanks for testing it out, it seems like its as per my initial thoughts that i wouldn't use it as the main light source for a room as everytime you enter a room and needing to wait 10 seconds after switching off to turn back on for them to stay on then it would be very inconvenient moving around the house without a smart device or having a nest/alexa speaker in each room you intend to deck out with these smart lights in.

appreciate you taking the time to test it out!

I'm personally using Shelly One devices for primary lights in rooms but they've gone up quite a bit in price since i last purchased a batch.

              • +1

@peter05: I've just performed a few extra tests. If you have not set a schedule, you can turn it off and turn it on instantly.
If you have set a schedule, you only need to switch it off for approximately 3 seconds then you can turn it on again. I've tried this a handful of times now. My previous test was about 10 seconds because I initially thought 10 seconds was acceptable. Hope that helps

                • @cynical17: oh nice that's perfect! that's exactly what i'm after, it will be a bit of a nuisance to have to turn off but it's far less inconvenient than having to find your phone or wait 10 seconds for light to switch on

thanks heaps, being able to switch off and then on straight away will mean you can use as main lights for room!

might increase the number of bulbs i purchased now :D

                  • @peter05: Yes I agree. Currently I've only been using the app to change the hue and brightness without a schedule, so they work as a normal bulb with a physical switch. If I'm too lazy to get up and switch off the light, I will use the app to switch it off. In the morning I will then physically switch the light off at the switch. This can then be turned on again instantly at the switch if need be.
If I do set a schedule, 3 seconds is reasonably quick to turn it off and turn it on again. My initial concerns was the bulb reconnecting to wifi which users had reported in the past, but I'm not encountering that problem.

  • for the bundles

be careful not to add both types to cart at once as harvey norman cart is broken and doesn't apply discount correctly

i had to put through two separate click and collect orders for the discount to apply

  • No bundle for E14? Bugger
