6 Month Free Speed Upgrade to 250/25 & 1000/50 for Existing FTTP & Selected HFC 50/20 & 100/20 nbn Customers @ Optus

820

Hi all,

Optus seem to be following other RSPs in offering complimentary speed upgrades for 6 months for those on 50/20 or 100/20. I’m currently on the 50/20 speed speed pack & just received an email informing me that I will be upgraded to the Superfast speed pack (215Mbps Typical Busy Period Download Speed) for the six month period which isn’t bad although I’m not sure what to do with extra speed.. maybe download some linux ISOs ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The Speed Upgrade will appear on your bill as either ‘NBN Speed Pack Home Superfast’ or ‘NBN Speed Pack Home Ultrafast’, with a corresponding credit so you won't be charged extra for it.

NBN Speed Pack Home Superfast = up to 250/25.

NBN Speed Pack Home Ultrafast = up to 1000/50.

Here’s a link to Optus is web page outlining the deal.

        • Did you have to get a new modem? They told me I had to.

          • @benjoon: Apparently not and the speed upgrade hasn't come through either so I'll be getting in touch with them again..

          • @benjoon: There are old routers that are not capable so you might need to upgrade your router.

            • @Twix: My router is wifi6. Optus said the modem needs to be upgraded.

              • @benjoon: Nah you won't need to.

              • @benjoon: You shouldn't need to upgrade it? maybe try another agent. If that is the case, you may have a very old one, which then you should get a free upgrade for?

                • @hmac: Thanks

First they told me it’s for new plans only. Then I told him my contract has expired already. So then they said I need to buy a new modem from Optus.

I’ll try contacting a new agent

      • Did mine last night and it only kicked in now. I restarted everything 3 times but it took me a while. But boy what a difference.

  • I didn't get a email so I just tried live chat and they wouldn't do it and said wait to see if you receive a email, did everyone else receive a email?

    • I'm getting told the same right now

  • -2

Im enjoying my 250mbps on ABB. It has come at a good time with xbox game pass and the Bethesda purchase

  • Still waiting for Vodafone

  • Can anyone confirm if these superfast speeds are actually achievable? With Optus or other ISPs

  • I just talked to live chat and got a speed upgrade. I've got FTTC 50/20 and they upgraded me to 100/20 which is the best we can get in our area.

My man here got FTTC upgraded in the midst of FTTP and HFC promo! You're the real MVP bruhh lol

  • Wow is the page broken for anyone else

  • So I just have HFC, and they did the upgrade for me.

My goodness. I haven’t even tried it yet but I did the speed test - 494mbps download and 46.7 upload. This is ridiculous.

    So glad I left Telstra!!!!

Ok. After having a chat with Optus and doing some research the only requirements are:

    • You have an FTTP or HFC Connection
    • Currently on an nbn 50/20 or nbn 100/20 plan
    • Own a F@ST 5366 TN Modem
    • Your premise is able to receive a 250mbps + Connection

If you haven't received the email, please wait 5 more days as they are still emailing customers.
The promotion period is from 1/3/2021 to 31/07/21 so there's still time.

  • So frustrated- have been told I’m not eligible but my address checks out for 1gbps I’m on HFC and I’m a long term customer. The rep I had yesterday and others today said because I didn’t receive the email I wasn’t eligible. I can pay an additional $45 a month and get ultra fast to go from so 4 to 6 but why would I do that when they are offering to others for free? Was there any other criteria to get it for free for 6 months?

    • Do you have an F@ST 5366 TN Modem? Else try pretending to quit and join Aussie BB or Tangerine. I'm still waiting for my Email but they said they'll send one out soon. How long ago did you join Optus?

  • Thank you:)
    Ultrafast speedtest

  • Just did mine was ultra easy on live chat!

  • Yes finally got the free speedboost to ultrafast. I have NBN HFC. I didn't get the email but after hours of talking with Optus live chat they finally gave in and gave me the free speedboost. They kept telling me to get a new plan and all that but once I told them that if they don't give me the free speedboost like everyone else then I would report them to ACCC and tio. Once I said that the person transferred me to the supervisor
Then they kept telling me about getting new plans and all that I kept insisting that I won't switch plan as I have a good deal and that I already have the new optus modem. I don't have it but I have a netgear xr500 router. Though I still told him that I have the new optus modem. He then said he would give the free speed boost but if it doesn't work then I can't ask for it again. Anyway I new that was a trick into making me to say no but I said yes so he activated it and finally I have NBN 1000/ultrafast. I've only had it for a hour now and the highest speed test was 889 mbps download which is pretty good for HFC.

  • Optus tell me that because I am on the old Entertainment Plan, I'm not eligible for this free speed upgrade. I'm arguing with them, but I don't expect to win :-(

    • I've been with optus in my area since the provided cable, then moved over to their nbn service when they ordered it in late 2013. Went on chat a few days ago to try and get the upgrade, but was told that I couldn't get it even though i met their criteria which was to have FTTP & the current modem model. I argued back and forward for about 30mins, then I remembered 1 trick that always got me what I wanted. I asked to be transferred to the cancellation department.

Neck minute (more like 20mins later) i was connected to the retention dept. Within 5mins I was moved over to the 1000/50 speed without issues.

You should try that, can't hurt…

      • I've also been with Optus for ages, first with cable internet, then with HFC NBN. I've been in chat with Optus for over two hours now, and yes, one of the four (or is it five?) departments that I've talked to so far is retentions. So far, no dice. Still waiting for the final "no" from their backend team now.

It appears that their argument is that I'm sending them broke with the deal I'm on now, so they're not willing to give me anything else.

        • The bottom line from Optus on the six months free speed upgrade for me:

As per our conversation today I've checked with backend team, we don't have an option to offer ultrafast speed pack for free for your service or area as we you're already getting maximum of $X discount. If you wish you can continue with existing service or you can port services or cancel anytime

Optus confirmed that there is no technical reason I can't upgrade, my HFC service can handle 250/40 (it's 100/40 now) - I can pay them $55 extra per month to do it if I want. So, the refusal on the six months free deal is entirely a marketing issue.

  • Be careful everyone. After getting upgraded for free via chat they lied and charged me on my new bill. Keep an eye on your future bills. had to chat with them for 1 hr to get it fixed.

  • I was told via chat last month I wasn't eligible as I was on an old NBN HFC plan. Still the upgrade on my bill this month so I asked again via chat. I rebooted NBN modem and Optus router and my speed upgrade worked.

  • Is there any logic if you get the
    * NBN Speed Pack Home Superfast = up to 250/25.
    * NBN Speed Pack Home Ultrafast = up to 1000/50.

I got the 250/25 upgrade automatically but wondering if I spoke to Optus Chat I could get the 1000/50? Seeing as I can order this package on their plan builder

    • Waste of time n effort really. I was upgraded to the ultrafast, but if you talk to optus, they will flat out deny that they actually have 1000/50. They will tell you that their ultrafast package will do 250+Mbps. I have fttp and on average get around 450mbps….

  • Did Optus end up doing this for anyone?
I called them up twice and live chatted once about it and they kept saying they will apply it.
I have HFC and they offer 250/25 plans at my residence normally- so it's defs possible.

  • Same, They told me you will get it 4 months ago, I followed up they said your modem is not capable, I said I have AX88U, they kept trying to upsell to a new plan with new modem and even their retention team said the same, "even if I apply 215 Mbps it doesn't work as it needs current Optus Ultra fast modem". So plan is to change provider to someone who won't force you their crappy modem. Been with them for long enough anyway
