Sony fans too busy being butthurt about Bethesda.

Xbox fans desperate for quality studios.
(Not that Bethesda is any good)

        • +8

I had no idea what people were on a out, but after googling it, I learned that Microsoft bought Bethesda.

As an RPG player, Bethesda is one of the devs/distributors I use most, and could impact my console choice if I wasn't on Xbox already.

So, Sony may have some competition in terms of exclusives, and competition is good for consumers.

So it's probably a good thing, unless it spirals out of control and people will need to buy a console just to play a single game.

          • +7

@BooYa: Also worth noting that Bethesda is a bigger company than just their core RPG namesake studio.

Microsoft now owns the 8 Bethesda studios (some of which have multiple teams) and franchises including Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Doom, Wolfenstein, Quake, Dishonored, The Evil Within, Prey & more.

People like to shitpost and be fanboys, but was a huge industry move even if some people personally don't like certain games from them. This acquisition was the biggest console industry news in the last 3-5 years.

            • @ThoseDeafMutes: Just to be clear…. Zenimax owns those. Bethesda is a publisher (Bethesda Softworks) and a game studio (Bethesda Game Studios).
              Bethesda doesn’t own anything

              • @beatsntoons: That's my bad. I wrote that Microsoft bought Bethesda, but they bought the parent company Zenimax Media as well.

            • @ThoseDeafMutes: What are the odds MS does not prevent Bethesda from dual-console releases over the next few years?

              • @jirskyr: They've been cagey about specifics. We'll know on a per-game basis for the immediate future.

They've committed to honouring Bethesda's preexisting exclusivity deals for Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, so ironically Xbox is publishing 2 PS5 timed exclusives this year (They're coming to PC day and date, however).

Any unannounced game, we'll wait and see.

The only guaranteed, for-sure benefit is that all these games will now be day-one on gamepass, even if they do come to PS5 6-12 months after Xbox (or simul release with exclusive features on xbox or something).

I suspect that games very far along in development could still come to PS5, but that beyond the next 12 months, only MMOs and small games like Fallout Shelter will. Maybe not even them, long term.

        • +6

wow - you have no clue bud - they own

          id Software (Doom Eternal)
          MachineGames (Wolfenstein)
          Roundhouse Studios (Rune II)
Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo)
          Alpha Dog Games (mobile games)
          Arkane Studios (Dishonored)
          Arkane Studios Austin
Bethesda Game Studios (Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout 76)
Bethesda Game Studios Austin (Fallout 76)
          Bethesda Game Studios Dallas
          Bethesda Game Studios Montreal
          Bethesda Softworks
ZeniMax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76)

          • +2

@botchie: This is still a bit complicated and honestly, things are more interesting than people think. It is no longer a clear cut:

            • Bethesda will still honour limited time Sony PS5/4 exclusives previously agreed (Microsoft will not stop that).
            • Sony San Diego (first party) will release MLB the show 2021 to PS4, PS5, XB1, XBsS|X, and PC (yes, Sony first party studio developing a game for XB series) - same day launch, no limited time exclusive.
            • More past Sony exclusives to PC (i.e. Days Gone) and given Horizon Zero Dawn was ported previously, would the new HZD 2 be eventually made available to PC?
            • Sony started using Microsoft Azure cloud (guessing Microsoft offered a better deal than Amazon (AWS)).
            • Microsoft, at least, officially, is leaving the door open for some future Bethesda titles to be available on other platforms (but technically, those 2 limited time exclusives still need to be honoured so could it be just those 2)….

Anyway, it's best for consumers that both console camps continue to survive. It is tricky as mobile gaming is taking a big chuck of gaming revenue and it is tough for consoles (despite selling well for the moment).

The ZeniMax is necessary after the Halo Infinite delay / screw up. It will likely have an impact later on.

            • @netsurfer: I don't think mobile gaming is taking anything from consoles - its different type of game
MS is doing quite well and gaining on Sony who is still employing same tactics they did 20 years ago and relaying on their exclusives to keep fans

The consoles are sold at a loss I imagine

              • @botchie: They are (for younger children and other general public) and I am including Switch in mobile gaming (for now). Most people have finite gaming budget and money spent on mobile gaming means less money left for console gaming. Not to mention after the honey moon period is over, console gamers will need to think about external storage (neither Series X's option, nor PS5's PCIe gen 4 option is cheap).

I am not sure where you get your figures from, but in terms of games sold (PS5 vs XB Series X), PS5 version of games sold leads by a significant margin and that includes 3rd party games (even ones where DigitalFoundry tests show Series X version technically is a bit better). GamePass isn't all pros without cons. Before GamePass, I purchased Microsoft first party exclusive games. After GamePass, no more. Microsoft has no guts to pull the $1/month GamesPass Ultimate intro offer yet (since last Nov). Also, thus far, every time a new first party exclusive is out, Microsoft does this $1/month special.

The attempt to increase price of XBox Live Gold (in an attempt to push people to the more expensive GamePass Ultimate) angered fans and Microsoft had to revert that decision. Microsoft doesn't treat past GamePass Ultimate subscribers (with elapsed subscription) that well. Sometimes Microsoft lets you use the $1/month deal, sometimes Microsoft doesn't.

It's tough for console gaming with AAA game development costing a lot more now. It is important both camps survive. Competition helps consumers.

                • -1

@netsurfer: yes Sony leads MS but the lead has shrunk a lot
not sure what you are saying for Game pass - do you expect MS to keep it at $1 a month?
its a steal at $15 a month as is

you know what will help them survive ?
                  make proper games

                  • @botchie: Didn't neg you. Do you have the link with new figures showing MS catching up in new games sold? Personally, it was quite frustrating when I traded in some of my XBox One games late last year. For example, same game (i.e. Red Dead Redemption 2), the XBox One version is worth a lot less (despite having higher res). Both versions had the same price when I purchased the game way back.

Game Pass Ultimate - honestly, if it is going to be $15/month, I won't sign up for a long term subscription (will only sign up when there is a new first party exclusive I like). That's actually an issue. With PS Plus and XBox Live Gold, you could still find discounted deals regularly. So far, we are yet to see decent Game Pass Ultimate discounted deals for existing customers.

I don't enjoy Game Pass weekly and monthly quests. Far too often, I need to play games I don't like. Furthermore, while Quick Resume is great, I am not impressed with Microsoft making more Series S|X enhanced games playable only on internal SSD or the proprietary SSD add-on. When Sony released an enhanced PS5 patch for a PS4 game, that game is still considered a PS4 games. Free games are getting worse for XBox Live Gold and we are start seeing a tier system between Game Pass vs Games Pass Ultimate. It feels like a trial for upcoming Bethesda games (Phil Spencer hinted tiered Game Pass). Lastly, what's the deal with some people with elapsed Game Pass subscription able to the $1 deal and some don't. With Series X, you don't get any voucher (unlike Xbox One S, X). And then Microsoft completely refused to offer me that $1 deal knowing I have a Series X on launch day.

                    • @netsurfer: I dont car about negs
cheaper games doesn't mean they are less popular - look at prices of Nintendo Switch games - they are still very high because they don't go down in prioce like xbox and ps5
xbox is cheaper then ps5 but pc is even cheaper - that doesn't mean anything

Games pass is fine and they are getting more and more ppl on it, specially now with all Bethesda's games that will be no doubt added on over time
                      $15 a month is just $180 a year,
new ps5 game costs $100 + - you have to be idiot to buy that

                      • @botchie: I am trying to be objective. Game Pass - how many of those subscriptions are $1 ones or discounted ones (upgrades from XBox Live Gold)?

Trade in game prices… Basically, the Xbox One version now has lower value in second hand market. The issue is two fold. Less people buying second hand XBox One games (so more supply, less demand). It's not just one game. Also, RDR2 is a pretty decent game, yet the gap is large.

Increased price per game - well, play it and then sell it quickly. Also, if we are look at equivalent games (Series X version of games - from the same third party), they are the same price. You cannot go the latest and greatest third party is $100, but a 2 years old 3rd party game is available in Game Pass.

Bethesda, let's see… Last time, Phil seemed to leave the door open so that not all Bethesda games will be on GamePass. Also, we know Microsoft could easily leave expansion packs out. We'll see if all Bethesda games get added to GamePass soon. The tier system is already happening. You really think Microsoft won't use this opportunity to try to entice people on Game Pass to upgrade to Game Pass Ultimate?

It's "interesting" Fallout 4 is in PS Plus collection and yet to return to Game Pass. Come on, Microsoft, no more excuses… all Bethesda games in Game Pass a.s.a.p.

It's crazy to me that a phone now cost more than 2 consoles, more than my tower.

For stupid stuff like curved screen and under camera display. As someone who likes his screen estate, we've gone too far and ergonomical and economics of phones are now (profanity).

          • +1

@Wonderfool: It’s not crazy that phones are overpriced. It’s basically a duopoly at this point.

        (1) You can play any good game on the PS/XB side, exclusive or not.

        (2) If there is a performance advantage on either console for a given game, you can have your pick.

        (3) If there is a very strong game discount on either platform, you can have your pick.

        (4) You don't really worry about stupid fanboy fights because you can always enter a conversation with the equalising "BTW I own both consoles".

        (5) You don't have to discard any legacy games you have from the previous PS/XB generation. And 99% of hardware also for XB.

        (6) Two consoles combined about the same price as a single GeForce RTX 3070.

Think I'm a bit late to the party but the console trade in deals are long gone aren't they?

    • -2

EB is never going to have stock, so probably doesn't matter. They over pre-ordered to a ridiculous degree.

      • -1

'They over pre-ordered to a ridiculous degree.' - please explain.

        • They sold significantly more consoles than they had access to. There are still huge amounts of people from the first wave of pre-orders at EB that still haven't received a console. Both PS5 and Xbox

          • @ONEMariachi: I managed to get a Series X from EB Games around Jan 20th when they still had their earlier trade in offer running. I traded in my One X and got about $400 for it, so changeover price for the Series X was about $350.

What I did to get it was I made a list of all the nearby EB Games stores (and their phone numbers) and literally called each of them every day for about a week… I think it was 8 stores in total. Many of the employees told me they get relatively random drops of 1-3 consoles at a time and they don't know when it will be until they show up at the door.

Most of the stores I called weren't allowing you to place orders anymore so it was a matter of finding a store with stock. They can then hold it for you until the end of the day.

I was probably quite lucky but I didn't find it to be too difficult of a process (just had to keep at it really), but how long you have to keep at it I guess depends on when the shipping cycle lands for them getting new consoles in. This was all in WA fwiw.

            • @Skrallex: Did this as well. How good was that eh? XD

Got mine during the second or third week of January. Traded in my One X on Dec 30 or so :)

          • -2

@ONEMariachi: the offer ran i believe until the end until the end of January as confirmed below… thats less than 6 weeks ago…. huge amounts i dont think so - never going to have stock - i dont think so..

Whist I agree, copying and pasting this in every console deal (especially with dead links) is wearing a bit thin.

  • Thanks OP for this.

I know people are gonna say that Xbox Series X is not worth it especially considering the lack of games we have now but as someone who has never owned a console in the first year it's just nice to be part of a console group.

    • +5

I've had a Series X since launch mate, and combined with Xbox Game Pass it is incredible… Definitely no lack of Games lol (Exclusives argument sure)… but in terms of shear value it blows PS5 out of the water. And they will role out soon + the Microsoft Studio titles will be on game pass day 1. (Halo Infinite, Forza, Gears etc)

      • Thanks for that dude, I really do wanna see more exclusive titles for Xbox and it's not just with Halo, Forza and Gears of War. What MS is doing is amazing with Game Pass Ultimate (I already use the one on PC as well) and I hope they close the gap between them and Sony so there's tighter competition.

In the meantime, I'm kinda excited for the Xbox Series X! I hope I get to enjoy this generation a lot more than the previous generations I missed out on ☺️

    • +2

It's fine. For any regular people, they'll only play 2-3 play station exclusives per generation. AAA gaming is so samey that it's more rare to find anything that isn't using the open world/cinematic formula that ubisoft and naughty Dog is known for.

This gen is a bit better though, starting off with demon soul and amazing Spider-Man.

      • +1

Spider man was mostly a DLC. It was short as

        • +1

Oh. Nvm then, business as usual lol. There is no worthy next gen game aside from demon soul, which is a last last gen game.

Saving $25 is the icing on the cake!

Thanks OP, it was a really great deal. Having the $25 off code and afterpay available made it awesome. I had this in my cart and applied the code and filled in all the details, but then I chickened out. I already have an Xbox Series S and a PS5. I'm actually using the Xbox Series S more than the PS5 at the moment, and I'd love to replace the S with the X to make better use of my LG CX55 TV. But I need to slow down on my consumerism for a month or 2 I think.. :(
Oh well, more deals will come along in a few months time.

  • +1

Thanks finaly got one! Been wanting this for about 175240 minutes, not that I've been counting…

  • -4

Series X is where it's at now. PS5 Disc is getting pretty saturated

  • +6

Almost about to pull the trigger but I had to remind myself that I already have a pretty great PC and it appears that Microsoft's policy is to treat the PC equally to the Xbox when it comes to exclusives.

    • In the same boat. With a PS5 as well, pretty much got all gaming grounds covered without the need for the Series X. Playing on PC with the xbox controller is pretty much the same experience!

    • +2

Yeah I'm in same boat - that's why I bought a Xbox Series S instead of X (don't worry, I only paid $360 for the the Series S).
But here's the dilemma - my gaming PC is connected to my Alienware AW3418 monitor, whereas my Xbox Series S (and PS5) is connected to my LG CX55 OLED.
I find myself often just wanting to sit on the couch with my legs up (it is an L-shaped couch) and play games on the bigger screen with nice OLED colours.
I don't want to have to unplug my PC and physically relocate it to the loungeroom, so I'm playing games with the Series S instead of my Gaming PC with RTX 2080. Doh!

      • +2

Yeah I have the same dilemma too. My gaming PC is a 3090 beast connected to a LG 34GK950F and I find it hard to commit to a gaming session whereas it's much easier for me to get into my PS5. The PS5 is connected to my LG CX55 and the OLED and HDR makes it so much nicer to play on. Gaming on a beanbag is also so much more comfortable than on my work chair.

        First world problems.

        • +2

This is why I quit pc gaming. I don’t wanna game on a desk lol

      • did you ever hear of steam link - look it up

    • +1

Personally, quick resume is such a big deal that I had to buy the series s. I play alot more games on it despite the lower graphics fidelity output.

    • +1

Sure, comment on a post you have no interest in

    • +1

I looked in my library the other day and had over 400 games. You must be thinking of another console.

    • Such an ignorant naive comment.

  • Interesting, risk using the coupon code to have your order cancelled when it excludes consoles….

    Risky proposition!

    • if the code didn't work that would have been correct but since it did it was designed to be allowed to be used.

      • They can say it was invalid as it is in the terms and conditions of the code. They can choose to not honour it and issue a refund as far as I understand.

        • not good for customer relations cancelling high value orders

          • @petry: Sure - that’s the risk a lot of companies take when they cancel all those orders such as pricing errors on OzB

            • @frugal investigator: not a pricing error it was a working discount code set by amount spent…

              • @petry: Pricing error was an example of cancelling high value orders that happen all the time on Ozbargain. A working coupon if not intended can also result in a pricing error when the coupon is not valid but works.

  • Why are people going crazy about these at the moment, there aren't that many great games out at the moment.

    • +1

A shinny new toy. Anyway, the quality of life improvement (SSD, Quick Resume, 60fps) is something you can actually feel the difference.
But, if you don't have gaming backlog or a powerful PC, then yeah, it probably doesn't make sense to get one at RRP (or close to RRP).

    • +1

Right? Stop clearing stock people so I can get one.

    • +1

I think a lot of people found themselves with more time on there hand during covid and alot rediscovered gaming. Also, some people have more money, since they arent eating out as much or travelling. Compared to the cost of a fully decked out PC, and travel, its not that expensive even at 750 for alot of working people who may have rengaged with the hobby.

The used market was for ps4 was nuts just prior to ps5 release. I sold my ps4 pro for 750, the day before the stage 2 lockdowns in Melbourne.

    • Why do people say things like this and completely gloss over the performance differences between last gen like it's nothing? If people only bought the console for 'great games' we would still be playing at 480p 15fps. People buy a next generation console for more than just games.

      • To be fair, most games are outputting the same quality as they did last gen. There's been effort to updating games to meet modern standard, but they're far and few in between.

They should just give us the ability to tweak graphics already. It's not even hard to port it since consoles have been using x86 SoCs since last gen. Instead, games like control gets to add 60fps and maybe some Ray tracing, then charge consumers another 60 bucks for it.

        • Basically

I have all these PS4 games I haven't played and I mainly play Warzone which I believe isn't even updated for PS5.

Im not in a rush, however I have $750 GC I bought with the 19% off lol

There may not be that many exclusives as yet, however the boosted graphics and performance on recent titles along with years of great xbox one games available on gamepass are more than enough reasons for me to be extremely eager to jump on in and grab a console ASAP.
