So old though… Why torture yourself with a dual core machine

    • +5

Eh? I still use this on the road. Works great for web and remote desktop.
Not enough RAM to be a development PC, but love the 1824 line display, and tablet mode.

But was cheaper back in 2023!
No mention of battery condition, and be warned that it is very difficult to replace battery without breaking the screen.

It's been lingering the $180-$200 mark since mid 2023.

  • +4

If it was 16GB then maybe.
But that old and 8GB…. i cant dude. But thanks!

do you think it'll do for reading eggs for my preschooler?

    • +1

Doesn't that run fine on an android tablet?

Along with the fan noice to match story BGM

      • +1

There is literally no fans on a Surface

        • +2

          What about below the surface?

        • wow, then kid will enjoy a hot pan while listening to stories

  • A friend is gifting me one of these. I intend to use it as a photo frame and (maybe) a Google Home hub…if I can work out how the heck to do it. Not a chance I’d want to use it for any actual computing tasks.

    • I was looking at doing the same thing and founded my pro 5 was very hot to touch on the back.

I have one and just being using it for day to day Excel, Browsing, Emails and many other apps etc while out and about No problems at all. It's not that bad (for me at least) and has a great screen for movies etc. Bright and very sharp.

Just keep the photos on rotation. I used one as a sign in terminal at work and because it wasn't turned off the image burnt into the LED.

When will SP 6 quad core be available?

  • Wonder how Linux would go on this in terms of driver support. I’ve gotten it running on our old SP2 but some things don’t work well.

    • It mostly works, but you are better off getting a Dell etc if you want Linux.
I have dual boot, but mostly use Windows on the Surface.

      • i already have a surface book 1, and won't be doing any coding on it but mainly note taking during classes, win 10 runs ass, planning on trying out fedora, just need to buy a usb

        • Yeah do that. Try out Fedora with the KDE window manager. KDE is better with touch screens. It should work well hopefully. I was running fedora on my SP2.

I have one on order. Recommend Nobara as it has Surface kernel extensions compiled in. I already have it running well on a Surface Go 2. Hoping the batteries aren't too bad…

          • @mostlygordon: Could not get my dgpu to be recongised on fedora or ubuntu for the life of me, have a surface book 1, i5 and a dedicated nvidia dgpu

          • @mostlygordon: I love the way that fedora looks on my surface book and its "smooth" (better than win 10) but still meh

            • @cephh: Nobara has a vanilla Gnome spin. Looks exactly the same as Fedora except the wallpaper, which is better IMHO.

        • If you want to use LTE, make sure you clear all eSIMs in Windows before loading Linux. I have Nobara running now with everything working including cameras (not IR).

  • How about one of these as a Wyoming Satellite?

  • Any info on battery condition?

    • +1

If you check the Item Condition Grading tab down the page, it shows as:
      Grade A:
Battery Life: Maintains 70% to 100% charge, showing minimal degradation.
Cosmetic Condition and Functionality: Minimal wear, fully functional without issues.

Personally I'd expect at least 80%+ if A grade. Any less battery would die quickly (couple of hours) They do have 1 year warranty so if bad just return.

  • Comes with keyboard?

    • The Ad Item Specifics notes: Backlit Keyboard, Bluetooth, Built-in Microphone, Built-in Webcam, Convertible 2-in-1 Laptop/Tablet, LTE, Touchscreen,
so would expect so. One could always shoot them an enquiry asking and also about keyboard colour and condition.

      • yeah did, they haven't responded. the backlit keyboard looks like copy paste from microsoft spec in 'features' section.

        • Fair enough and looking further down the Ad and in the Include it only says: Laptop and power adapter.
No mention of keyboard. This could also be a copy paste, who knows. Perhaps post back here if you get a reply.

    • +1

Yes, it comes with original keyboard.

      Thank you
