CPU in title should be 4770. Normally I wouldn't quibble, but there is actually an Intel CPU 7440 and an Optiplex 7440.

Typo, Thanks for pointing it out.

  • any suggestions for a basic PC to browse the web, play online FB games with wifi?

Max for the box is $500

    • +4

Any of these i5 or i7 Dell/Lenovo/HP machines will be good for that, main thing that will affect your performance is whether it has an SSD. A USB wifi is cheap if they don’t have it included.

You shouldn’t need to pay more than $300 either.

    • The EliteDesk box with the i5 6500 is pretty good for what you want to do.

The i5 6500 is a Skylake CPU which is much newer than the Haswell CPUs in the Optiplex boxes. My feeling is that the Skylake chips which is practically identical to Intel's latest microarchitectures will be supported for much longer than the old Haswell architecture, so you'll get years of mileage out of the i5 6500 easily.

another way of looking at it is that the i5-4570 and i5 6500 are EXACTLY same speed and therefore you are paying $100 premium for a "newer" generation (6500) - IMHO not worth it at this price point and given their age :)

      • Thanks for the link.
Got one of the M93Ps for my parents. The case is missing a few of the rubber feet on the horizontal side and the HDD seems a little slow however for $159 it seems like it will be fine for them.

    • Are the wifi options usb sticks or internal cards?
Just trying to choose my options for the build. Thanks

  • Are your wifi options internal cards or USB sticks?
    edit: new ssd, sorry

Do you have any laptops on sale?

  • what ssd brand and model used in the pc?

    • Given its 120gb or 240gb, its the cheapest crap available. WD Greens etc dramless drives that uses part of the drive as cache.

  • How many 3.5in hdds can you fit in this and does the motherboard support?

    • Usually 3 SATA ports, and one 3.5" bay

      • +1

For optiplex, you can fit 1 x 3.5 hdd and 1 x 2.5 SSD both together. The 2.5 SSD will just need to be tucked away underneath the 3.5 hdd cage so it won't be screwed on but it shouldn't matter anyway since its a desktop.

  • Is the CPU removeable? This could be a good buy just to extract the CPU for another build

    • Yes

    These are pretty awesome machines

I got a 790 SFF with an i5 2500 and 8gb ram a few years ago, whack a Nvidia 1050Ti LP or even 1650 LP with an SSD and maybe 16Gb of ram and you've got yourself a machine capable of doing anything for less than $500.

I like them so much I got a 9020 Mid Tower with an i7 4790, upgraded the psu and put a 1080Ti in it, it plays cyberpunk 2077 fairly well, even in ultra no rtx.

    • are the differences between say a 15 2500(k?) and the present cpus noticeable at all, it seems as though if persons have the parts available for basic upgrades (e.g. 1050ti etc) they could potentially customise a 'makeshift' computer for relatively minimal costs. Having said once someone is paying around $500 it might prove wiser to pay more for one of TechFast's budget systems

      • +1

I don't think there would be a noticeable difference with 1050ti +15-2500 for most games, I have a i5-2400 + GTX1060 3GB without issues but I usually play old games

    • There’s a slight issue with the 9020 SFF and fitting in a graphics card.

The PCIEx16 has been placed right next to the power supply so there’s no room for a two slot card to fit. The previous model 9010SFF had enough room to fit in a two slot graphics card, but on the 9020 they swapped the position of the x4 and the x16 slot unfortunately.

You can actually put the graphics card in the x4 slot which looks strange because more than half of it isn’t connected to anything but it does actually work.

There’s a guy who has actually physically modded the case and pulled out the power supply so he can benchmark a 1650 and compare the x4 vs the x16 slot. There’s about a 10% difference in frame rate that he gets.

I’m not sure but I don’t think you can just pull out the motherboard and put it into a standard case. The power plug is proprietary and I’m not sure if the motherboard would line up properly. Maybe someone can confirm?

      • Correct, it is not a standard format motherboard. The main reasons for buying these old Optiplex PCs is the nice case and power supply.

  • Is it max 16gb?

    • +1

If you want 32GB of RAM get the 6500 which is DDR4 and has 4 slots.
Probably cheaper to get the 8GB model and source 4x 8GB DIMMs from the secondhand market. (Should pay around $100 for 4x8 sticks)

      • +1

      • Be aware some i5 6500 Dell ones come with DDR3L which is dearer than DDR4.

  • Does ebay plus 15% code give more discounts on these?

  • Great deal. Nice.

  • +4

I use this machine with an SSD and a GTX 1650 - Awesome mid-spec gaming rig.

  • +1

I bought one of these Dells from this seller, very lightly used and the power supply randomly died after 12 months. Beware with refurbs.

  • Is this good enough for Software like Solidworks and photoshop?
