    What could go wrong?

Thanks! Perfect for my underground unlicensed dental clinic! Now taking appointments ;))

  • +11

Am I the only one imagining myself using this, accidentally sneezing and ripping a huge hole in gum resulting in almost comical arterial type spray and me bleeding out on the bathroom floor?

    • +3

Not the only one anymore, thats all I can think about now :D

    • +1

      It is hayfever season!

    • I haven't until now.

    Forum questions posting soon…

'Guys I think I scraped my enamel off, is this bad???'

      • +11

"Now my dentist wants to charge me $1800 for caps, is this a good deal?"

    • +1

I'm bleeding heavily after a botched attempt at cleaning my own teeth with these tools. What do I do now?

      • +2

practice on someone else first …. be careful dogs bite

  • +3

This seems like a great way to (profanity) up your enamel or gums and end up with an even more expensive fix needed lol

Dentists are expensive but you're paying for years of expertise and study.

      • +2

Could always choose one that hasn't been to uni I guess.

  • +2

    a good alternative to toothpicks

  • +6

"Why pay hundreds of dollars at the dentist"… REALLY?!

  • +1

Would a dentist buy engine oil to do their own car servicing? Or would a mechanic buy this to do their own teeth cleaning?

    • +15

Why not? Just because you're a dentist doesn't mean you can't service a car. Sure, we should pay to see a dentist but changing the oil on a car is hardly in the same basket.

  • +2

One slip of your hand and you are jamming an unsanitized sharp metal object into the interior of your mouth and gums. You could also end up shoving bits of tartar deeper into your gums and it's a risk for infection…

    • +1

Why is my hand any more likely to slip than a dentists?

      • +2

Because at a dentist's office you're seated in a chair not moving, as opposed to standing bent over your bathroom sink in front of a make-up mirror and trying to clean your teeth yourself?

plaque scrapers are sharp, and if you don't use them properly you can damage your gum tissue. Over time it could cause gum recession. This means that the gum tissue lowers and exposes the sensitive roots of the teeth.

Tartar can be accidentally pushed under the gumline, and this can lead to gum issues like infection.

you do not want to get gum abscesses — if it goes unchecked or undetected it can lead to bone loss. Bone loss is irreversible.

people buying "professional", specialist tools thinking it'll automatically give them professional skills in using them.

    RIP your teeth & gums.

  • +4

just make sure you don't do your teeth after doing the dog's.

    • +1

instructions unclear. Fido is flashing his pearly whites. Now my turn.

  • +1

    Very good, OP.

I now await the special on Flouride.

Also, any specials on the happy gas?

    • +1

Happy gas is pretty cheap from most newsagents. Also fluoride is available from supermarkets and most chemists.

  • +2

Now for the matching set of scalpels and a needle and thread for stitches.

I actually bought this kit off eBay. Works well.

Beats paying the dentist a visit and reduces your exposure to covid19.
Boil the tools in water for 10 minutes, use isopropyl alcohol to disinfect.

They seem to be fairly decent quality precision instruments… But what would I know, I haven't even watched any diy YouTube videos yet!

When you do. You then become a qualified dentist.

  • +4

This seems like a terrible idea.

"Why pay hundreds of dollars at the dentist when you can look after your oral care in the comfort of your own home at the fraction of the price?" this is a ridiculous statement.

      This is ozbargain Afterall….

      • +3

Yeah, lets grab some cheap dental equipment off the internet and potentially destroy your enamel and gum causing irreversable or thousands of dollars worth of damages.

On using a sharp stick to scrape off some plaque build up - "YOU WILL SKEWER YOUR HEAD, BLEED TO DEATH AND THEN DIE"

The movie Marathon Man would complement this purchase well

  • Even if you know how to do it right… there's no way to get sterilized in medical grade…

    • Ciggi lighter does a good job of sterilizing.

Why don't we get comments like this when home hair-cutting products are listed?

If dentists thought a scale & clean was difficult, they would do it themselves, instead of delegating it to their hygienist.
However, I'm not sure a dentist would use these on themselves. Perfect for your dog.

    • +2

Why don't we get comments like this when home hair-cutting products are listed?

Because a bad haircut won't kill you or cost you a fortune to fix.

Whereas a dodgy dental procedure could.

      • I don't understand how a tooth scrape can kill but a haircut can't? Surely the risk is the same for both: breaking the skin with unclean tools.
        Just let common sense prevail

        • When have you ever seen hair clippers ever been sterilised even at barbershop? Hardly if ever.

Compare that to going to a dentist that don't sterilise their tools? Not talking about dodgy backyard ones. I'm talking about properly run business.

How many years you reckon it takes to be a hairdresser as oppose to a dental hygienist?

there's a reason dentists and hygienist need to learn to do this with years of training and practice.

The risk of breaking skin with dental work is far higher thus risk of infection than it is with getting a hair cut.

    • +1

A hygienist does a 3 year degree to be able to clean teeth mate.

  • For your backyard dentist

    • Just need some pliers and a hammer and you're ready

      • Don't forget string and an accessible door handle

  • Three out of the five 'reviews' mention getting these to use on their pets. Can't imagine anything going wrong with poking sharp things into a dog's mouth!

Also on the last product photo, I don't think whoever photoshopped it understands how mirrors work.

    • Can't imagine anything going wrong with poking sharp things into a dog's mouth!

Its fine. Nothing bad will happen. Just go for it. You seen them exorbitant vet bills. This will save you heaps.

  • I should buy these professional tool and open up a Unprofessional dental cleaning service and make some bux

Outside of dentistry these tools are great for miniature hobbyists for moulding sculpting terrain. Removing circlips from small gadgets a wealth of other uses. Would I shove them in my mouth for self dentistry NO WAY!

    • Now there's a legit use for these tool.

  • +11

As someone who works in the dental field ->
Plaque accumulation + saliva = calculus
Calculus must be removed with a scaler tip (typically an electronic one)
When we brush our own teeth we're removing as much plaque as possible. When we floss we're doing the same thing to prevent it from building up. Over time it will build up regardless, and you'll notice you have the most calculus at your bottom front teeth as saliva pools up there
Brushing (with a soft toothbrush) effectively and flossing helps to prevent calculus buildup, and for the calculus that forms you go twice yearly to get a clean done.
I've seen some dentists offer $99 for a scale and clean particularly new practices or practices that are trying to attract patients
Personally the practice I work at charges $185 and we're in by no means an affluent suburb. Patients understand what they're paying for, because pulling the tooth out or getting a root canal is going to cost a lot more (OP Please post DIY tooth extraction / root canal kit)

Further to that, this pack of 5 is what would typically be in a 'filling set' or 'restoration set' as those tools are used to mould/form the filling
My guess is that someone imported these instruments and weren't able to get TGA approval to sell them to dentists, so now they're trying to sell them to suckers lol
What the hell does a normal person need forceps to remove plaque for? That's what a toothbrush does? And you need an electric scaler to remove calculus?

  • +1

Has anyone actually bought this and used it, for real?

    • Yes I did . Pack is nicely made and tools are of good quality.
I couldn,t see anywhere on the list "Why Pay dentist when you can become your own dentist"
Of Course No tool can substitute a professional dentist but care is doable at home for sure.

  • +1

I guess some of us are totally ignoring the idea of having your own sterilized tools which you can as your dentist to use on you.
I have kept a separate Hair Cutting Kit also which my barber uses on me.
