  • Does this mean you could order 2 and get ~$30 or is it just a off credit

    • You should get $30 credit 3 weeks after ordering

Yallah habibi. Shohadah!! Said to me by my not so nice Syrian boss while in the middle east. Grrr.

  • So what can this do that my LG C9 can't?

Can you install Kodi on this device?

    • Pretty sure you can sideload any app but I don’t think the ram is that great

      • I don't think you can. The USB port is to provide power to the device. How do you sideload apps?

        • +6

ADB over TCP. At the very worst you could download a file manager and browser from the Play Store and download/install APKs that way, no need for an external device.

          • @deanylev: Never did that before, but yes, that'll work

          • @deanylev: I have an Epson Google TV and it has regular Play Store so no problem with Kodi. I even got YouTube Vanced sideloaded via an app called "Phone 2 TV" or something like that, the interface for remote only screen isn't great with Vanced but the concept of sideloading an APK works. Assuming Google TV is the same on every device.

        • There's articles going around of people side loading. I haven't read how just know people have been putting stadia on it and other apps

        • Once it's connected to the internet and your LAN you've got plenty of ways to sideload apps.

        • +2

Some people have had success with USB-C hubs too with power passed thru

          • @dmbminaret: I looked at this but you need a higher power supply and a usbC to ethernet adaptor . Gets kind of expensive .

        • +2

Guess you probably could plug it into a computer which should power it as well as allow you to load stuff just like a phone.

        • +2

You can download straight onto chromecast using Aptoide or download apk files via Downloader. No need to use USB stick.

But I watched a YouTube review and the guy said he couldn’t install 3rd party apps as it appears to be locked by google….for now

        • You can use 'send files to tv' app on the Google TV. And use the same app on Android phone. Download all the apks from phone and send it to your Google TV.

      • -1

Apparently you can’t sideload 3rd party apps. It’s locked

    • +1

So what can this do that my LG C9 can't?

Compare the features between the two…

      • Yea I was looking and the only thing it has extra is more apps. Otherwise we get a losy of shows from all sources already and some great quality apps that are incredibly fast, from the looks of it even faster than the chrome cast.

        • Google assistant baked in via the mic on the remote. Android TV apps, Dolby Vision support and already almost at the same price as the Chromecast Ultra. Pretty compelling all around.

I have a C9 and use a Shield rather than WebOS as Android TV works far better for casting than the LG baked in version.

          • -1

@boredofficeworker: My TV has Dolby vision along with the apps, what android apps are useful? Also why use a remote instead of asking google home or your phone to do things? I don't see how its compelling if they are just gimmicks. I don't cast any more, just use the apps on the TV, they are fantastic and fast, faster than Google TV.

          • @boredofficeworker: When i compare apps like Netflix UI for example on my 65 LG B9, the colour pops (more saturated), but the netflix apps on my shield pro is looks low res and anemic/wash out. So i regretted buying the shield pro.

Don't really understand people's hate on LG UI, it's fine and responsive to me. Only lacklustre thing is that there's sometimes an ad displayed on the left hand corner when you open the home tab, but the UI on common streaming apps like Youtube, Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video all work without a hiccup. Don't really see the reason paying another $99 on top of an expensive TV mostly just for the same functionalities.

The Google assistant might be nice, but I already have Google Home in living room anyway. I usually browse stuff before finding something I want to watch and don't see the need to use Assistant to say something specific to watch something specific. I think this is probably mostly aimed at people who don't have a good smart TV or have a non-smart TV.

    • -2

This reviewer suggests you can't sideload apps for the moment as it appears Google has locked this. shrugs

The LG C9 is a TV. It can convert signals sent from mountains and towers far, far away into light and sound. It sends internet traffic about what you are watching back to base to increase revenue for LG. But it dosen't need mountain signals, it can also use the World Wide Web (WWW)!!!

Chromecast with Google TV is a media player, so it outputs electrical signals a TV can then emit as sound and light. And it is highly likely it also sends back data about what you are watching to increase revenue for Google. It can only use data from the WWW as it is significantly cheaper and doesn't have the magical mountain converting technology.

The main point of difference is the user interface. LG's sucks. I have not played the the Chromecast with Google TV yet, but apparently it pulls content from most major apps you subscribe to and groups content into recommended, movies and shows. You can still access the apps directly and you can install thousands of apps as it runs on android TV.

      • What on earth 😂😂

      • But LG had a special promotion of a tin foil hat..

        • Or if you really care you can disable wifi…

      • In fairness it's probably not using the world wide web but I'm being picky.

        this guy….. :)

Not sure why this degenerated into a can-you-can't-you sideload discussion…

Yes, you can install Kodi on this. Just search for it in the Google Play Store and click install.

      • takemmy + because you actually bothered to look, unlike the rest

    • Yeah what's the point Of it, if you have an android tv / computer?

      • +1

Some android tv are slow to navigate or do not support anymore some apps.

        • Oh right, can believe that, I find The usual apps fine even some light retro gaming on the Android OS with dualshock 4 good. Connecting the PC with a 5m HDMI and Xbox One wireless controller is next level

  • Saying out of stock for me. Is there a special google handshake?

    • +1

      Change the colour

      • +3

        True. Ordered blue. Thanks

    • White is out of stock. I think the pink and blue ones are available.

    • Only if you have a fear of pink

  • Can you use Google Play credit for streaming services, like Netlfix and Disney+?

  • +12

Wish the restocked the Netflix bundle

    • +4

Yeah considering the bundle will be a code or some other digital thing, it’s ridiculous it’s OOS while the exact same hardware product sans Netflix is available.

      • +1

well you have difficulty moving past false advertising since the hardware is available still obviously…

  • +1

So can I stream movies and music from my PC to my smart TV in 4K without trans-coding? Does it have DLNA support?

  • +1

    Out of stock Netflix bundle

  • Thanks OP.
Anyone recieved their credit yet? It says 3 weeks before the delivery…
Just purchased and no email just yet.

  • +2

White is in stock again. I'm tempted, but I don't know what I'd use Google Store credit for. If this was Play store credit then I'd be jumping on it.

Just buy the ultra to start with? Just no remote though

      • Same - get the Ethernet adapter for half price :)

      • +4

The official Google ethernet adapter is only 100Mbs (i.e. cheap and basic) while 1000Mbit has been the standard ethernet speed for the last decade or so and is easily available with third party adapters.

100Mbs should be fine assuming you stay away from 4K content.

        • Yup, I was going to get one, but 100mbps is slower than wifi. Also the issue I have with my TV, end up on WiFi instead, which really bugs me.

          • @ExtremeDavo: I wonder why people would buy this particular adapter then? Unless they have severe WiFi interference issues.

  • What? I pre-ordered one from google a few days ago, hope I get it.

  • This vs MiBox?

    • +3

I see zero reasons to buy a MiBox now that google is finally back in the media player game.

      • Well, there is the idea that you can connect a bluetooth headset to the MiBox. Can't really do that with the dongle. That is one difference and also the fact that you can sideload apps pretty easily.

        • Can't really do that with the dongle.

also the fact that you can sideload apps

You seem confused. This isn’t a Chromecast. It’s running Android TV just like the MiBox, just with a different launcher. Functionality should be the same.

          • @PainToad: No, I understand its Google TV. I am just saying, when OEM try to 'integrate' services. Some things get harder. Things like sideloading apps will be a touch more challenging than with MiBox where you can just sideload using a USB stick.

            • @ShoeJunkie:

Things like sideloading apps will be a touch more challenging than with MiBox where you can just sideload

You still seem confused. This is running the same OS as the MiBox, there's just a different launcher. It's already been confirmed you can sideload on it (and there's no reason to have thought it wouldn't be possible).

              using a USB stick.

              Just use FTP or ADB.

  • +2

This is actually a better deal for those getting Netflix via Turkey etc vs getting the Chromecast deal with the $95 Aussie Netflix credit from what I can see?

    • I though the Netflix deal is better in Kenya? /s

    • Looks like Turkey Netflix is blocked via VPN?

    • Hang on, so which one do you see as a better deal? Netflix via Turkey or Chromecast deal with the $95 Aussie Netflix credit

      • +1

        Netflix via Turkey.

Essentially, $140 will get you either:

        • A Chromecast with $95 Aussie Netflix credit, which equals 6 months of the standard plan

        ….or

        • A Chromecast, with $40 left to put towards Netflix billed via Turkey, which equals 6 months of the standard plan, plus at the time, $15 Google Store credit (and then continued cheaper Netflix)
  • If I don't use Netflix is this a better deal than the other one?

    • +3

If you don't use Netflix, then probably makes sense to buy the one without Netflix.

  • So basically this allows us to have Android TV on brands that are non-native Android (like LG, Samsung, Hisense or the cheaper Chinese TVs)

    • +1

Google TV now. Googles' marketing department is a little scatterbrained.

      • I've heard that GTV ui will replace ATV ui in future. Can we install Android apps on this Chromecast like ATV?

        • It’s is Android TV with a custom launcher. The launcher can already be installed on any Android TV.

          • @PainToad: Oh ok. Thanks for the info.

          • @PainToad: Not Oreo devices though. Pie and above.

          • @PainToad: I think there is a bit more behind the scenes besides just the launcher eg. recommendations and integration of all your viewing without going through individual apps. You can get the launcher now but much functionality is missing.

    • +12

      1) Probably will run way better than any Android TV built into a shitty “smart” tv.
      2) Will get updates longer.
      3) Will most likely have better app support since more people will have this device than a specific tv model.
      4) Once this gets out of date you simply buy the new model for $100. Compared to when your tv’s OS is out of date, you have to buy a whole tv.

      Smart TVs are dumb.

      • I have a good Sony and the Android TV interface is snappy, plus it lets me install whatever I want. I don't see anything about this new Google product that adds anything at all, to be honest.
