i'd rather DIY and use retropi

  • +1

If it’s the same size as the Aldi one, then it’s only really fit for children and dwarves. Definitely can’t play standing for longer than five minutes without neck pain.

    • I had one of these.
OK to play sitting on stools.
IMO, decent buy for sub $300

  • +7

    Wasn't a deal even at $299

  • +4

    Any time crisis machines?

  • I bought the aldi one awhile back.

Tutorials on youtube to show you how to swap it to a retropi. I put one in mine and just swapped the joysticks and buttons over as apparently the standard ones arent that great. You will need one little part from china on eBay that will convert the lcd in it to hdmi to plug into your rasperrypi so if you plan on doing the swap order that part sooner rather than later to save a little time.

Another year or so my son will be able to play TMNT and the rest with me on it, have had a drunken night playing NBA jam with buddies, good fun. You can easily build a little riser out of plywood if you didnt want to be sitting down all the time.

  • +2

Remind me of the hours spent on Dungeons and Dragons Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystera. Probably better off buying something like the capcom arcade joysticks that comes preloaded with 16 games and you can simply plug it into the tv.

  • +3

Expensive, cleared these out at Aldi for $150 years ago? Is it just me, or are the deals getting worse here these days?

    • +2

Yeah I was thinking the same here, yet the sheep will upvote

  • These things are tiny.

Plenty of youtubers who have either bought a base or built their own.

Also, playing two player is laughably cramped.

But the artwork is great, it’s a licensed product and has some modding abilities.

IKEA lack side table for $12 bucks works beautifully…

  • I got the rampage version of these at Christmas from TK Max for $99.. it’s super cool. I wouldn’t pay more than $200 for it though

  • I've got an old full-size cabinet running a 412-in-1 Jamma PCB but it takes up too much space.

Would this 3/4 size cabinet let me swap the PCB/sticks/buttons into it? Or should I just find a cheap bartop to move it into?

    • Yes.. PCB sticks and buttons are all replaceable

  • O wow , This brings back memories of where my 20 cent pieces use to be spent on, i wouldnt spent that much on this kind of machine , i can have a emulator with pretty much all these games on it, got the emulator like 8-10 years ago with all the roms,

  • There was a good opportunity a few weeks ago here in Perth. I didn't watch…but wonder what these went for?

    • Lloyds auctions for arcades typically end for more than they are worth, plus sellers fees etc.

  • Wish they had the Star Wars version for sale

    • They do in the US i believe. We havent gotten any beyond the first batch released a few years ago. There are heaps of other models now. They just didnt sell here and the distributor must have just not bothered bringing in any more of the line. They should have gone full height or at least sold the risers here. They are jsut to small to be worth it to be honest.

  • +2

My boy Quasimodo had one of these back in Notre-Dame

    • The very reason I never bothered when they hit aldi.
Being 6'3 and broad shouldered, I couldn't imagine it would be very comfortable experience, let alone trying to play it with 2.

  • +1

It's good for decoration. But I hardly believe anyone will get their moneys worth out of this on just playing it

  • +1

I'd have happily bought these at rrp or the ALDI sale prices, esp MK, SF and NBA but I can't pay these sorta figures.

  • +1

Just for anyone wondering, these are great for decoration. But if not operated regularly, it may not boot up.

One thing I would like to see on OzBargain is upvotes vs sales. ie. With 94 upvotes and 6 sales, I think we are upvoting more for a retailer for past experiences rather than the deal itself…

I think that stats say it's not a deal & I feel bad for people who see all these upvotes and jump on the deal thinking that it's some crazy bargain and purchase something they'll instantly regret when they see it. It's tiny & looks out of place, and still nowhere near a good price. It's not a deal.

    5200 clicks
    97 upvotes
    6 purchases

    • +1

You are a stooge if you buy based on upvotes.

Most people would do a quick ebay/amazon/google/youtube search on the item then complain in the comments that they missed out.

      • -1

I don't think it's about being a stooge. People will act on sentiments in this type of deal.

Hence, that's why I think that where possible, clicks/upvotes vs sales will show a better picture of a good bargain.

        • No a good bargain is based on what the item usually sells for or its past lowest prices. This is very cheap for this item.

Just because only a few actually buy it simply might mean its niche/ high cost or something that not many people are in the market for.

        • +3

Lack of sales does not necessarily mean it isn't a bargain. It could be upvotes from users who already have the product and are happy with it and deem the posted price as a bargain.

A good personal example is that I bought an LG OLED TV around 3-4 years ago and there have obviously been good deals since then, where I have +1 the Ozbargain deal - I can tell you that I certainly didn't buy a new tv every time I voted on an OLED TV deal!

        • +1

I take what I said back. I was wrong.
I almost bought a laptop because of the upvotes just now.

At this price it's NOT good value at all - this is the 3/4 size Arcade1UP cab that was sold in Aldi ages ago for $499 I think it was. Most people got theirs on sale for WAY cheaper. In the US, people are able to pick them up on sale from Walmart for $75!

Hunter Leisure has the import licence here, and they only imported the SFII version, and there are plenty of other cool models around (Mortal Kombat, Ninja Turtles, Star Wars) which we will never get. I also spoke with Hunter Leisure, they have no plans to ever import the "riser" too (which brings it up to standard arcade cab height). I ended up making my own riser for mine.

Here's mine from the front, playing MK - with Sanwa joysticks, Happ buttons and lighted credit buttons (doesn't take real coins).
And from the rear - Arcade PSU, Pandora's Box multi-cart (JAMMA/CHAMMA connector) etc.

(Still haven't finished it off… haven't done the cable management, sorted out the power sockets… one day maybe!)

    • love your modification on SF 2 unit.

By the way once you install pandora, do you still have access of the original SF games that comes with the cabinet?
If not, does the pandora itself have SF games, which we can set the difficulty level?

How is the audio quality on the pandora games on this unit?
does it have a rough sound like the SF origins (which need to be soldered on here and there as per some forum website?)

      Thank you

      • +1

Pandora has a lot more than this. It will have everything up to street fighter 3: third strike.
The difficulty and other options can be set too.

        • +1

Yep that's right! You basically just pull out the game board that the Arcade1UP comes with, and re-wire in a Pandora's Box… or Raspberry Pi… or a full PC running MAME. I might eventually swap in a MAME machine.

Sound is OK-ish, but these Arcade1UP machines only have one speaker (mono sound)… that's a mod for another time though!

    • FYI how good were those M1 Tank Platoon games? I loved them.

    • Looks great. Nice game collection btw.

I really wonder what the nostalgia market is netting in the economy in general, there are so many things produced that just seems to be all nostalgic, or classics, in theory it's probably going to go to landfill as well as these remakes have sub-par quality and the nostalgia will wear off.

  • +2

These are small pieces of shit

  • +2

I feel like for this much money and the space it is going to take up, just spend more and get a real deal arcade cab.

I bought a dance dance revolution extreme cab a few weeks back and it’s making covid19 bearable. Also lost a ton of weight lol.

    • Without searching for the answers. How many iterations of Dance Dance Revolution arcade machines can you name? I think I can do 5-7

That sounds like a cool setup tbh, I can imagine it also being one of those things you'd do when everybody is at your house, ready to head out for the night, so are full of energy and fun and can get some Dance Dance in before the night begins. TBH my night usually always includes the arcade so it would just be practice.

      • +1

        Haha um lets see

        DDR
        DDR 2nd mix
        DDR 3rd mix
        DDR 4th mix
        DDR 5th mix
        DDR Maxx
        DDR Maxx2
        DDR Extreme
        DDR Supernova
        DDR X
        DDR X2
        DDR A
        DDR Euromix
        DDR Solo

I know there's some other random ones like the Disney one and 3rd mix plus and stuff but I can't remember them all :D

        • wow. You killed it! :)

          • +1

@Heaps for Cheaps: Haha, my cab is running a "super disc" which has every version up to and including extreme so it wasn't too hard lol

    • How much did you pay for the DDR machine?

      • The specifics of mine won't help too much but as a general price guide from when I was hunting, I would say anything from $3500 to $6000 for a 1st gen cab in Australia, with the lower end probably being a Korean cab that started life on 3rd mix that's seen better days, and the higher end being a Japanese cab in very good shape with a good quality CRT still going and everything working perfectly (lights, neons, speakers, stage switches etc).

$7000-$12,000 for a 2nd gen cab .. and god knows how much for a 3rd gen.

Beware they are heavy as (profanity).

    • thats funny and cool, nice work

  • Free shipping OMG…..

this thing probably weighs as much as my wife and emits noise as much

  • This is the new 2020 edition so it has some positive upgrades.

Honestly the price is good but these things are terrible. The buttons are cheap and the systems are just bad. You could buy a proper machine for a bit more. Hell I got a street fighter 2 clone cabinet for 400.

  • I spent a long time building a standalone 4 player control stick.

In the end, my mates all just preferred playing games on the couch with xbox controllers.

Personal space, comfort, bigger screen. The machine is still under the house. But I might dust it off again one day.

  • Favourite arcade games:
    Street Fighter 2
    Mortal Kombat
    Simpsons Arcade
    TMNT
    Time Crisis
    House of the Dead

  • I was fortunate to get one of these from Aldi on clearance. The one thing you will need to fix on them is that they use square gates on their sticks instead of round ones. This makes it very hard to do Hadouken or any other move requiring you to do a curved pattern.

  • -3

Despite what all the haters are saying. This is actually a pretty good deal. There won't be any more Arcade 1up machines coming to Australia from what I can gather.

Get this one and mod it. All the hard work is done.

    • There is probably a good reason there wont be anymore. Lack of interest and overall not a great product. Sure the newer iterations may have fixed some of the issues, but at the price point they were selling here, they just arent worth it. As someone said earlier in the thread, plenty end up on clearance shelves in the US walmart's, etc. Surprised Arcade 1 Up is still cranking these out to be honest.

  • +2

Saw this at the Gamesmen today. This thing is seriously tiny, like you have to be on your knees tiny. Also the controls were not good, the joystick was not smooth at all. Felt pretty cheap overall.
