Too late Amazon , got a Kobo instead

    • But, they're $180+.

    • +2

Kobo is so much better. Never going back to Kindle especially living in Australia, kindle is no good for libraries here.

      • +4

Just download Calibre and you can put your library books on any Kindle

    • any deals for kobo?

  • Is this a good price $209.00 for the Kindle Paperwhite – Waterproof, battery lasts weeks, access to over 5 million titles (32GB) or is there better around ?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Kindle-Paperwhite-Waterproof-Stora…

    • +3

Looks like the 32GB is $199 at JB. 8GB is same price as amazon.

      • +1

        Thanks
Just going through having a look Office Works have got the same unit for $198

If you have previously bought a Kindle, you can contact Amazon when you purchase a new Kindle, and they’ll give you 20% off

    • Wait really?

      • +2

Yep, did it the other day but you have to buy the new Kindle from Amazon

        • What if you bought the old kindle second hand? Is it just if you own a kindle currently?

      • 15% when I checked today
        https://ibb.co/gvzcRVr

        • I just chatted with Amazon and was told no discounts available.

        • +1

I can confirm it's 15%. I spent the last hr chatting to them because I bought my old device from amazon.com and the chat agent says they can't help me since I purchased I didnt buy it here. I argued it was a simple loyalty matter so he spoke to his supervisor and made it happen. I still have to contact them after the device arrives but that's fine.

      • +1

Also can confirm. I just spoke to live chat and was able to get a 20% refund (since i purchased before chatting). Main reason was because I own many kindles previously and one of them is defective - hence why purchasing a new one.

        • Were they registered to your amazon account when you asked for a discount?

    • Have you bought many books from them? I thought the discount was dependent on you having purchased a few books from them.

      • +2

I have never bought a kindle book (thanks to Calibre and Linux iso sites), but my super old kindle (like nearly 10 years old) wouldn’t turn on the other day. Contacted amazon to see if there was any other steps to try, and the guy mentioned to me that if I buy a new Kindle, they’ll refund me 20%. Bought the new kindle, and then they refunded me the 20% with no hassles. I originally bought my kindle from Amazon US, and got it shipped to Australia too. So the price I got it for, was $139 - $25.27 = $113.73

What are some good sites to download books from?

          • +5

            @sav11: https://libgen.is/
I just use that site to download copyright-free public domain material, don't search for and easily download copyrighted material in .Mobi format for your Kindle, because that would be ILLEGAL.

    • I'm on the live chat to someone now, and they are saying there isn't such a discount available. Do you have a link that shows it?
I've found a trade in offer from US Amazon, but they're saying its for US only, not Aus.

should change the name to Kindle Paperweight because that's what most will end up being

  • FYI amazon AU won't repair kindles, and tell you to go to a phone repair shop. best part… they can't get the parts as amazon don't sell them.

from digging through the net, iFixit guides stop in 2015 and I can't seem to find any replacement epaper displays from current gen.

so yeah, just don't break the screen as you have to buy a whole new device. (my wife dropped a xiaomi power bank 3 pro on it when getting it out of her bag, that things a brick and did a number on it haha).

    • oh and I bought a replacement at Christmas deals as guess what… all our ebooks are in kindle now! so locked in

    • To be fair knowing what even the basic repairs for any other phone/tablet costs these days i can't imagine you saving much by repairing an old Kindle vs buying a new one, apart from the Oasis.

      • oh I would have replaced the screen myself, they just don't do anything. just a pile of ewaste now

    • Geez, times have changed. I bought a Kindle maybe 8 years ago, sat on it the same day and broke the screen. Called Amazon US, and they shipped out a postage-paid box with a new kindle inside it and a new shipping label to send back the broken one in the same box. No charge, I couldn't believe it. The "new" one would be a refurbished unit, but hey, the screen works. Pity Amazon AU aren't the same!

      • yeah that sounds amazing! Amazon AU seem to be "set up here" to just ship products, but don't have the repairs operating. but I don't think that makes it fair to just not offer a way to have it fixed if they're not distributing the parts for repair shops either.

  • Have a few paper whites in the house and they’re a great bit of equipment but I wish they were 8” and cheaper. The technology isn’t mind blowing yet the 7” version (oasis) costs more than an iPad mini.

    • I have one Paperwhite and then one Kobo One (8in). Since getting the Kobo, I gave that Paperwhite to my daughter. 8" is great.
The only problem with Kobo is I haven't found any way to send an ebook file from my phone to it

      • can u read amazon books in kobo?
I can send pdf ebooks from mobile to kindle using the email address. Not sure about kobo.

        • I have never taken a book purchased on Amazon out of my Kindle, so no idea. But as long as the book is DRM free, there won't be issue copying to Kobo.

Kobo doesn't have the feature of receiving ebook via email like Kindle.

          • @Averell: To read amazon kindle book in kobo, do you need to use an app and just login or need to copy individual books?

            • +2

@EnALup: Best to use an app like Calibre to manage your library of ebooks.

        • +3

yes, I read my Amazon books on my Kobo reader. Below may help you:

+1 for Calibre, get the DeDRM plugin for it to make it easy. (see here - https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/remove-drm-every-ebook-own/)

          1. download books from Kindle for PC (use earlier versions of Kindle, I use 1.17.1 for compatibility with DeDRM)

          2. download book from within Kindle for PC

          3. drag and drop downloaded book from folder in your pc into Calibre. DeDRM will drop the DRM

          4. convert book to epub in calbire

          5. drag to your kobo ereader

          :)

          • @snoopster: Where do I get Kindle 1.17.1? I tried to download this but then it wants me to sign in using amazon.co.uk rather than AU Amazon?

            • @dammit: Try to google "KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44170.exe" for PC and "KindleForMac-44182.dmg" for Mac. Make sure you set your Kindle software to not auto-update. If that happens you need to reinstall

I found the link that goes through this with some detail. I followed this (look at method 1) https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283371

            • @dammit: forgot to mention that i tried logging out and back in again. it gave me an option to select which amazon to sign in with e.g. amazon.co.uk or amazon.ca and a few others, but AUS isn't available anyway. so try to login and just leave it as default

              did your login actually fail?

          • @snoopster: Thanks. Seems like a process to do and will evaluate if worth it after specials on kindle. This will be second kindle and might get basic version. Like the ease books are available to this device.

The Paperwhite 8G has been cheaper previously, but for current offers, probably reasonable if you want one. Wife is slowly using it more recently only as I have downloaded her some classics off this site. So its been almost a year as was a Mothers day gift from last year. If you are getting one as a gift maybe if your the partner you will need to encourage more reading by trying to get the books they like as well put on it for those not so tech users.

  • +1

Looks like Officeworks has dropped prices to beat -
    Paperwhite 8GB - $168
    32GB Wifi - $198
    32GB 4G - $318
    6" Kindle - $118

    • or is it the other way around?

      • +1

or is it around the other way?

What a lot of cry-babies. My wife and I have used Kindle for 15 plus years without a problem - forget ALL THOSE WANNABEES like KOBO. Tried some FREE books with them and it is BASIC compared to Kindle, although OK for those who can't afford $2 for a book. You only need to buy the basic Kindle Paperwhite to get all the advantages of not carrying books. We travel overseas 2 months a year and never have any issues with accessing new books ANYWHERE. Plus you only need to recharge after 7-10 days and you only just have to remember to charge it occasionally.

    • +2

Literally every single benefit you just described also applies to Kobos…

There's a distinct difference between not being able to afford a $2 book, and preferring to get the identical free version from a library. But if it makes you feel like the big man for overpaying then good for you.

    • not criticizing the product, just Amazon price has been $199 since Xmas - and needed one for a bday present , no price drops / specials - took my business elsewhere. Now they have a special but too late guys

  • +1

Damn. I bought a kindle from goodguys last week thinking they won’t go on sale. any time soon due to lockdown. Doesn’t appear any price promise to allow a partial refund :( I should have waited !

  • I bought a Kindle from Amazon 3 days ago! Any way i can get the difference refunded? I cant seem to find a contact number for amazon.

    • Use the chat function on Amazon - they are really good - or initiate a return :)

  • +1

I have a Kindle from 2012 without a backlight and thinking of upgrading. Not sure its really worth the added $50 for the Paperwhite which adds storage and makes it waterproof. I mean even 4GB will hold plenty of books. Do people sit in the pool and read or something? I've never felt the need to have a waterproof Kindle but now I'm presented with the option I am starting to think I need it lol.

Anyone on here gone from the vanilla Kindle to the Paperwhite? Is it worth it?

  • Seeing the restrictions are slowly being lifted and things going back to some norm will the price of the Paperwhite Kindle reflect that and come down in price ?

  • Amazon AU have dropped their price to $199 on the Kindle Paperwhite 32gb to match JB's

  • This deal is over :( Might want to flag it to be expired OP.
