The socket blocking is one issue I did find.

      • Yep, that's the only downside.

    • and this jinvoo is better than tp link?

      • tenda is 1 for $14.95

      • I have a couple of Jinvoo plugs and have been running fine.

I have these, i don't like how they block the plug next to it. I use them for two things… if I come late home when I wasnt expecting it and on holidays I use to turn the lamps on and off (have three). Also my bedside light is a weird looking science thing and you can only turn off at the wall, which I cant reach from bed.

The Kmart ones are 50cents more but they dont block the next point.

Ive had one of these for quite a while now in the garage. Its exposed to extreme heat but keeps on keeping on.
I use it to disable my garage door opener on a schedule at night.

    • Why do you bother disabling the garage door opener?

I live in the home invasion capital of Australia. One of the methods these ferals use to get into peoples houses is via the garage since so many garages are house connected. I was taking the remote out of the car (that lives outside the garage) but some days I would forget. This solution is seamless.

        • Townsville?

          • +1

@Oofy Doofy: I have heard Townsville is quite bad these days, no im in Melbourne.

        • You should geofence the plug, use IFTTT or something. When you're not within 200m of home turn it off. When you are turn it on… That would be cool. You're going to get woken up in the middle of the night surely, or you could keep that schedule too. Geo triggers only happen if you enter or leave an area… So it won't keep reenabling in the middle of the night if timer was set.

        • My garage remote is small and is attached to my keys, so it comes inside with me.

These are good. But they're huge and have coil whine issues which drive me nuts.

    • I've got the HS110, and yeah, it's pretty noisy when it's off. I get used to it though.

Good price, definitely worth noting that it does block the 2nd power point on a standard AU powerpoint!
These are good quality and very durable though compared to other cheaper brands.

  • Anyone have a problem with these (or the brilliant smart ones) becoming deactivated and not working randomly? Mine just randomly stop working with Google Assistant and I have to keep setting them up again and again. I don't touch them or change settings apart from the set up. It seems to happen when the power goes off, then they stop working with Google Assistant when power comes back on.

Haven't had a problem at all. I wonder if it has something to do with your router?

      • Good suggestion. My main router is a Nighthawk AC1900 but the smart plugs themselves are run off a basic wifi repeater at that end of the house. Might look into that

I have had the integration break between it and Google a few times, but this isn't specifically related to the plug as other linked services have had the same problem. In both cases, the products still worked independently with their respective apps.

  • I’m impressed with ours. I bought two to replace hard to reach electronic timers which I found .. unintuitive to program/adjust times for lamps. Bought a third to control the garden lights which use a transformer in the garage. Good value.

  • I had an interesting experience with these - they would lose connection really frequently, like a after a day - and wouldnt reset themselves. I have the cheaper brilliant plug and literally never had that heppen in a yea - but TP link every week. Then i upgraded the firmware (had done this before, but there must have been a new patch) - and they are good now - so just ensure you do that.

    Meh. No deal.
Kogan has a normal price of "2 for $35 shipped" for plugs that include energy monitoring.

I got some of the Aldi Bauhn smartplugs for $5 each few weeks ago - clearance stock from when they went on sale in October 2019

  • Mine works really well, I use it to turn on the outdoor fairy lights. Be warned it is CHUNKY! You may not be able to put another plug next to it.

  • Just purchased at Bunnings West Footscray.

Bunnings price $34 before price beat, $17.10 after. Nice.

Would the Kmart ones work just as fine?

Given it’s $0.50 more and takes less space on the power board, what does the TP Link have that this doesn’t?

      • Wow. Coles is selling these with a $30 price tag.

Get the Mirabella one, and use the SmartLife app. This app can control hundreds of different smart devices, and has more functionality then TP-Link.

      • Instead of using different apps, you can just link the devices into Google Home and simply use the Google Home app or voice control. You can then set shortcuts using iOS if needed.

  • What’s the energy usage on this thing? I’m wondering if it’s worth using it to kill the standby power on my Home Theatre gear.

  • brilliant one with usb is 18.55 at Officeworks

  • Serious questions here…

How do these things work when it comes to ghost/phantom power? If they need to be connected to WiFi so they can turn something on or off, they would need power to do so, right And if so, does this mean it doesn't actually save you money by turning the power off, but rather, it's simply a matter of convenience to automate turning devices/appliances on or off?

    Thanks :-)

Checked mine, uses about 0.4 - 0.5W in standby.

For the right use e.g. a powerboard with several devices that collectively use much more phantom power in standby than this device, can actually add up to a reasonable decrease in electricity use if you set the timer to go off automatically at the regular time that you are unlikely to be using it any more.

E.g. go to bed most nights @ midnight, set timer for 12:30 a.m.to turn off old TV, stereo amp, game consoles, android box etc., all connected to one power board. Not on again until at least morning, often much later. Saving all that phantom power on those devices for at least 8h a day, very often much more.

Probably saving at least: 20W x 8h x 365 days/1000 (to get kWh) x your electricity cost per kWh.

At price in this post, the device has paid for itself in under a year (depending on your electricity price).

I got mine for much less due to a coupon from Amazon for not being able to supply something else, so mine has paid for itself already.
Also feel much less need to replace the older TV and amp now as still fine for the job, but previously only annoyance was their markedly higher standby power compared to newer units -> another win for the environment as I'm not replacing something that doesn't need to be renewed.

As other posters have mentioned, can at least be alerted to (if not timer control of) use of certain devices by the kidlings in your house :-).

      • Now THAT is a bloody ripper of an answer! Much more detail than I was expecting, so thank you very much!! I will definitely have to do some more research on the matter as your points regarding the 8 hours overnight in standby make perfect sense. Thanks @opposablethumbs

  • Very silly question…how do you connect the light bulb to this thing..

    • Do you mean via your home network or physically?…

  • I'm using it with my wife's hair straightner. No more tension when after leaving home for work, she says she can't remember she turned it off or not.

  • I've got my monitors and speakers each attached to one.

Get up in the morning and tell Google to turn on the monitors.

At night, "OK Google, study off", and the ceiling light, desk lamp, monitors, and speakers (Hue, Hue, smart plug, smart plug) all switch off.

(Before anyone asks, the monitors both have fiddly multi-function rocker switches, and the speakers are Logitech Lightsync, and if I don't shut them off, the study is lit up like a Christmas tree.
