Smash Brand Glass Coffee Cup with Lid $7.99 @ ALDI

930

I don't know why someone hasn't posted this.

I've been looking for a good one to match my friends exxy keepcup.

Smash brand good quality (unlikely to easily smash, imo) reusable travel keep cups at Aldi. Plenty left. 12oz only.

Block colour lid and marble effect heat band. I got pink and grey.also available navy, teal and others…

Didnt spill when running this morning, but can't be sealed shut. (just a silicone push lid with an open spout and vent hole, but seals well)

Lid stayed on well when I tipped it upside down full.

Credit to bro-in-law for letting us know about these!

Heat loss through cup: 5 degrees C per 10 mins with lid on at 19oC ambient. See comments below.

how can you fit 12 OZ men in there?

    • +6

Wow, it can fit 12 Ozbargainers? Must be big

  • Thanks for the post, this is exactly what I've been looking for.

    • +3

Coles Express stores currently have Barista Buddy glass keep cups on clearance for $5. I bought one last night, have seen them in multiple stores.

      Red or black silicone lids.

      • Perfect, thanks so much. I'll check both Aldi and Coles. Hopefully they still have some where I live.

        • +3

Coles Express. I checked at the service counter in an actual Coles and they had no idea what I was talking about.

      • +1

        Oh this is good!

  • -2

What makes you think it's more durable glass than KeepCup?

    • +44

Not more durable, just equal quality from feel, close inspection, refractometric tests and relative mass.

      • +10

        refractometric tests and relative mass.

You won me over with these fancy words

    • +16

Also it didn't smash when I tried to crush it solo.

      • oh no. thats me

      • +7

Bruh it takes skill to drive manual transmission and eat cereal while on the go

        • And put on make-up? All at the same time of course.

      • +1

I believe laksa soup is the OZB choice of food to eat while driving.

        • Yeah you need a straw though.

  • +4

Thanks for the post. Does these have hard plastic lids or silicon lids? I personally don’t like the feel of the silicon lids when drinking

    • +2

Yeah the silicone lids. Me too prefer hard plastic. It stays on well no leaks though (obviously open small spout and tiny air vent)

  • +2

So that's not a KeepCup then?

    • It's a SmashCup

    • +39

Yes but you can keep it if you want to.

        • +41

          Lol WAT??

        • +24

          404, brain not found.

FYI.. Soft Silicone lid without cap on drinking area. There is no way seal the cup completely. Sadly the biggest downfall of the product.

    • +1

Damn, was going to buy a few but the lid and no drinking cap is a deal breaking for me. DEAL B-B-B-REAKERRR!!

      • +4

        🙅‍♂️No deal!

      • +3

        DEAL B-B-B-REAKERRR!!

    • +1

      I'll add that!

    • +1

Soft Lid, drink will spill. SAD!

    • It's a perfectly fine cup to keep in the office if you like to go to the cafe on company time and transport a coffee back to your desk. Just remove the lid when you drink it.

  • +7

I don't know why someone hasn't posted this.

Because it's an $8 coffee cup with a jinky lid. It's not even insulated. This one from Kmart is cheaper, tougher, larger, and has a better lid which seals: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/450ml-double-wall-travel-mu…

    • +4

      Food for thought..

      1. It's glass not plastic cup.. IMO the less plastic we use the better
      2. Not insulated but can be placed in microwave
      3. Linked item looks like a pain to clean and not dishwasher safe
      4. It's bulky and not a screw top
      5. Everyone's needs are different
      • +3
        1. Plastic items which are re-used are not the issue. Single use plastic is. The scales are much different.
        2. Good point.
        3. Is it? I can't see details, but I don't see why it wouldn't go in the dishwasher.
        4. Bulky? Maybe. But it also holds more - if that's what you want.
        5. True. I just don't think the Aldi one is a good deal.

I actually bought a ceramic double wall coffee cup with a silicone lid from Kmart a couple of years ago, for less than $8, and that's what I was looking for when I found the one I linked, but the ceramic one is not listed in their online store.

        • +3
          1. Agree!! Given the rise in micro plastic indigestion year on year, I try to minimise my expose so a glass cup is always preferred over plastic
          2. Cheers :)
          3. From my past history with similar products you can't use them in the dishwasher. Turns out cheap seals and metal don't play well with heat and corrosive cleaning products
          4. True.. guess it depends on needs
          5. Compared to Keepcup pricing (~$20-30 per cup) its fairly competitive I think. Not the same but pretty close.

Yup, from time to time you will find some good stuff. Best of luck on your search :)

          • @vash5: Micro-plastic ingestion comes from mostly tap water/bottled water, shellfish (and fish) and crappy table salt. Collecting and drinking your own captured rainwater and eating shellfish less often would cut down micro plastics the most. Out of everything you could do that is.

        • FYI.. saw this today.. not exactly $8 but quality looks good. Figured you may be interested

    • +3

+1 for using the word Jinky in a sentence.

      • +1

        Go Daphne!

  • Hey OP does it say if the silicone lid is dishwasher safe? I've found our silicone spatulas start tasting like detergent after cleaning them in the dishwasher

    • +26

      Stop eating them then.

    • I will check. Doesn't say on the cup itself, but it is borosilicate glass, so super resistant to thermal shock, so the glass itself should be all good.

I'll check the box when I get home.

The rest is silicone, so should be heat resistant… Anyone else have any experience with silicone lids?

      • +1

I've had experience with silicon keep cups (body) and plastic lids. Essentially after time (mine nearly took two years) wherever you touch the silicon the most (ie. you are drinking out of this one?) will wear down and eventually a hole will surface. It seems to happen more quickly if you start putting it through the dishwasher (or mine had some serious discolouration). Still I drank 2 or 3 coffees a day out of it which I use to use disposables for so I hope I evened it out with the landfill.

    • +1

Is it really so hard to wash your lid by hand? It'll make it last 20x as long if you do it. You can still put the glass in.

    • +1

@georgedn, yes I just checked the box:
Dishwasher and microwave safe, but don't freeze it. Bpa free etc.

  • “I don’t know why someone hasn’t posted this”

They have - it’s in this catalogue and mentioned in the comments here already

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/462955

    • Oh yeah cool nice thanks. Didn't come up in my search, so at least the word is out for this specifically.

  • Battle of the keepcups right now

  • +2

    A+ commentary from the OP

  • +1

Got mines over the weekend and apart from the silicon lid, the glass is quite strong as OP mentioned. luckily i had a plastic keep cup and just swapped the lids :)

    • THIS!!! And then you always have the plastic backup for "no time to clean" or kiddies.

Does it fit well? The keepcup (c) lid?

  • +1

This is made with borosilicate glass which should be stronger than KeepCup which is made from soda-lime glass. As others have said, the keep-cup lids are more functional.

My recommendation is to buy a keep cup, and don't drop it. :)

  • +3

Probably not a great name for a glass cup

  • +3

Am I the only one that doesn't get the hullabaloo around theses KeepCups? When I saw a cafe selling them for $30 a pop I thought they were taking the proverbial, but sure enough, that's what they cost from the source. And my wife is gaga about hers.

It's a glass, with a (poorly insulating) rubber band around it, and a plastic lid. Where's the #omg factor and why does it cost 10 times more than a ceramic mug or regular latte glass?!?

If it's an Apple Generation thing, then say no more… but I'm genuinely trying to find out if I'm missing something.

    • +3

      Maybe… Re. The branded keepcups,

      • Sturdy for public transporters or those on the go, handy to have a good lid when you're juggling ticket, bags, umbrellas etc.
      • close to sealable, for when you are ahem running
      • does save a tonne of resources for heavy drinkers, multiplied by a big population
      • glass is eventually fully recycled
      • hopefully people keep them a long time, re. the silicone.
-they are much easier to clean than a thermos, and partially insulating
      • it's nice to see your drink in the glass
      • the image and unnecesary consumerism when you don't actually need one.
      • I think Keepcup mentions the glass is already recycled.

  • How's the lid on these?

coles and woolies stock one that looks good and has a good lid. $12 and occasional discounts bring them to $8.

    • +2

So… I just tried tipping my hot chocolate upside down with the lid on, while it was full. No leaks out the lid sides, only slow chug from the drinking spout and air vent. I lost about a teaspoon. Kids, don't do this at home.
      On the carpet.

  • +2

I got one of these on the weekend as a few of my keep cup lids are now loose and a bit of coffee spills out. The silicone lid not being able to be closed is not at all an issue for me and for $8 I can't fault it. Much better than a plastic keep cup for ~$10 and much cheaper than a glass keep cup (in which the lid will inevitability fail).

  • Are these double walled glass (insulating)?

    • +18

So the lab results are in.

      60oC start,
      55oC after 10 mins
      50oC after another 10 mins
      Then I drank it.

      Controls: Room temp 19
      Lid on.
Cup was not moved, plus limited room airflow.
      Full-cream milk,
Froth thickness (1-2mm, similar to flat white)
      Cup was pink.

      Compare as you so desire.

      • +2

Never a has there been a more deserved + vote, cheers mate

  • +1

$5 glass cup from Kmart has done the trick for me fine. Left it on the roof of my car as I was leaving for work and had it fly off as I came out of the driveway onto the bitumen. It made a proper clunk onto it too, but there was absolutely no damage to the cup. The only neg was that I had to drive to work with no coffee.

    • Lol that's the best!

  • Why does this deal say EXPIRED? There’s still plenty of these in my local ALDI and they’re good too.

    • Thinks brew ipdited.

  • Anyone know which store in Sydney may have any? I went to 3 around my area and there were none

  • +1

    Smashcup:
+ Cheaper than keepcup, making it an everyday ozbargainers choice
+ Silicone lid easy to wash.
    - Bit more exy than Target $5 for quite a similar cup (no fighting at an aldi required here)

    Vs.

    Keepcup:
+ Hard plastic top for better tasting coffee (harder to wash)
    + Australian owned
    - More expensive but when on special under $20 easy - see previous ozb deals

Personally it's all in the lid in my opinion. I'd pay more for the lid design. Functional, can cover the sipping hole and just an overall nice aesthetically pleasing feel to the keepcup. Imo if you are an eneloop fan and am happy to pay for quality, keepcup's not a bad choice!

    • These Smash ones are 100% Aussie owned, I just realised, but made I. China… Is Keepcup the same?

  • +1

Bought one last night, gave it a test run this morning at one of my favourite coffee shops.

Found it very pleasant to drink coffee from!

    Would recommend!
