Pioneer Fully Automatic Turntable (PL990) $179 Delivered @ Kogan

60
ZIPFREE

I noticed this turntable in the latest e-newsletter. Essentially identical components as the Audio Technica LP-60, with the below pros & cons. You decide whether it's right for you or not.
Pros: Speed control on the front
Cons: Doesn't appear to have a pre-amp/phono switch (I believe it's permanently set to pre-amp, aka non-phono for line-in amps/speakers) vs. the LP-60 which does

Specs as per Kogan Website:

  • Two speeds so you can play LPs and 45s
  • Fully automatic operation
  • Low-mass straight tone arm – highly sensitive and resistant to resonance
  • Universal-type cartridge connector
  • Moving magnet cartridge included
  • Built-in phono equaliser – simply connect to any auxiliary/line input on your amplifier or mini audio system
  • P-mount cartridge
  • Low-vibration, belt-drive design
  • Rubber platter mat
  • Vibration-absorbing feet
  • Hinged dust cover

    How big are these?

    I don't really want a huge F.A.T.

  • I had the lp60 in the US, wasn't dual voltage so sold it. No complaints personally, I had it hooked up to a small monoprice hybrid tube amp.

The consensus seems to be that it's decent, but to be careful with vintage vinyls (probably best to not play them), i.e. more for the newer presses that you will only play a handful of times.

Excellent, detailed review/test of both the Pioneer PL990 and the Audio Technica LP60 - He spends a lot of time debunking the mostly bullshit claims people make about them - turns out both are actually pretty decent turntables!

    • Fair point about only 3.5g tracking, but I stopped there. 3.5g tracking was about what I'd have expected from a BSR with a ceramic cartridge…

  • How will I play my 78s?

  • Has anyone actually used/owned a Pioneer PL990 or Audio Technica LP60 & can comment on their experience?
I'm yet to buy a record player and am having a hard time deciding between new ones like these two models or old 70s/80s models second hand from gumtree.

    • Yeah I own an LP-60. Decent entry-level table. Light tracking force & auto anti-skate so it treats your vinyls well. I also like that it's an automatic table. You push play, it carries & drops the needle, then returns to home once the records finished. A nice set & forget system.

As per description, it's up to you to decide whether you'd prefer easy speed control (on the PL990) or the flexibility of switching between Pre-amp Line Out & Phono (on the LP-60). If you have a newer Hi-Fi or Powered Speakers and don't think you'll ever plug into a Phono amp, I recommend getting the PL990.
