@Mobe1969: Yes they do - as I had my Sparky call up Master Electricians and they confirmed the wired ones DO MEET the regulations. Also confirm that they have a battery backup in them too.

            • @wilsong: Ah right. So aside from the replaceable 5 yer batteries there is a ten year non replaceable backup as well?

            • @wilsong: You will find the wired ones do meet the standards for smoke detectors, but unfortunately dont meet the standards for electrical wiring because the 240v wires are not double insulated.

          • @Mobe1969: My understanding based on this https://www.qfes.qld.gov.au/community-safety/smokealarms/Pag…

Post 2027, the wired-Nest one will be fine, but not the battery-Nest (because it uses removable battery).

It says nothing that the wired one must also use non removable batteries.

Yes in each new bedroom and also in any hallways - even have one in a 2m hallway unfortunately due to the new regulations of having one in each room and hallway.

        • oh okay, my builder has put in smoke alarms only next to bedrooms not inside. So 2 adjacent bedrooms have just 1 smoke alarm.

  • +7

    Thanks OP ordered one!

Wife - 'why did you spend $135 on a smoke alarm?!'
Me - 'Because some strangers on the internet told me it was a good deal'

    • Story of my life:)

      • +1

Same with all tech purchased - because at heart we are still boys :)

    • Because it was a bargain, so you need to buy more ;)

  • Can it detect gas?

    • It has CO sensor

I dont think there is any out there that detect different gases

      • There are VOC monitors that can.

    • Yes.

It also detected my nailgun/aircompressor too. thinking because of the leak in the compressor may have set it off.

    • -1

From farts? Hmm does this mean that the alarm might go off quite regularly?

      • maybe turn the CO off for your bedroom one

      • That's methane - not CO (which is lethal)… otherwise everyone will go brain dead from farts. Just imagine. :)

        • Actually you cant turn off the CO detector part anyway

          Only steam check

  • Is the hardwired version compliant with Australian standards? I remember a while back, a smart detector on the market wasn't compliant, cant remember if it was this one or not.

    • +1

I dont think it would be able to be sold in say JB, good guys and officeworks if it wasnt?

I think the only issue that was ever posted was the cables didnt have enough insulation for normal Australian standards, i would think that would of been resolved for newer units? I'm sure someone would correct me if it was still an issue

    • +1

Yes its compliant. Confirmed by my Master Electricans - I'm based in QLD.

      • Thanks, just ordered a battery one for a new location, ill have a play with it today and order 3 x HW ones to replace my existing detectors later in the day.

    • I'm not sure if anything has changed in 2 years, but with mine the power cable included wasn't double insulated.
While this means you can't leave it hanging about in your roof space, it just needs a junction box covering it.

Not sure why it was such a big deal for those few sparkys reported to refuse to install it.

      • +2

I've bought 3 wired units in the last few months and none were double insulated. I double insulated the wires myself.

        • Great idea! Can you share how you did this?

  • Can any electrician install the wired Nest alamrs or you need someone with special skills?

    • They come in both a normal battery operated one, or a wired version ( with battery backup as well).
I highly recommend the wired versions :)

      • Genuine question - I'm curious why would you highly recommend the wired version? From what I read the only benefit of the wired version is you can get more frequent update about the Home/Away Assist feature (https://nest.com/support/article/What-is-the-difference-betw…). The battery version will require you to replace the batteries once in its 10-year life time, but it's still significantly cheaper than wiring the wired version, which still needs to be replaced after 10 years anyway.

        • Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, it seems that you should be able to replace the wired one yourself once it has been initially wired?

          • @muppet: If you are replacing one wired Nest with another, for example in 10 years when the unit is supposed to be replaced then you could do it yourself since its just unplugging the old and plugging in the new.

But if you mean replacing another type of detector with a Nest, then no because the Nest will have a different connector. So replacement involves shutting down the power, remove the old detectors plug (at this point you have exposed wires) then adding a terminal block and wiring the Nest wiring loom to it. For this legally you would need a licensed electrician.

            • @LowRange: I meant replacing nest with another nest

        • I read the night light was stronger on the wires version.

    • +1

Any sparky can physically install them. Setting up the Wifi side of things is easy enough too, scan the code on the unit with the app and put in your Wifi details.

  • If I'm not in QLD, is there any reason for me to select the wired version? From what I read the only benefit of the wired version is you can get more frequent update about the Home/Away Assist feature (https://nest.com/support/article/What-is-the-difference-betw…). The battery version will require you to replace the batteries once in its 10-year life time, but it's still significantly cheaper than wiring the wired version, which still needs to be replaced after 10 years anyway, and you will need an electrician to replace the newer wired ones. Am I missing anything here?

    • I guess just battery life. Eg with the mains the battery is I suppose just used for a backup power supply, where the wired, the mains does it, and battery is just there for power outages. But yes, the need for a sparky to install adds a bit to the cost.

    • +1

if you replacing a wired unit, then it would make sense to put another wired, other then that there is no difference in the unit

  • iswitchoz has set up this to allow their wifi switches be also turned on if alarm is set via iFTTT

  • Just asked for a price match at JB’s in Perth city and got no dice

    • you wont against a ebay code

  • Can only order 3 from GG ebay store, tried to do 3 then 2 in a separate transaction to no avail

    • Wonder if thats the problem im having. I get a "Something went wrong" error after submitting the order. Have already ordered 1 x batt, trying to order 3 x wired.

  • Ordered two battery ones. No stock at my local good guys (so ebay store said), then email received saying that the items are being processed and sent by my local good guys!

  • +1

ebay does not allow purchasing more than 1 per customer. It does allow to add upto 3 to cart, but at checkout it throws back error. What's going on @OP?

    • +1

me too, tried to buy 2 but it came back with an error "something went wrong"

  • +1

    Bought 2.. Why not?

  • eBay support couldn't help me with the checkout error I'm getting when choosing click and collect, anyone click and collect successfully?

    • +1

Nope. Apparently it is out of stock, the error code means. Good guys emailed me back eventually and expecting stock soon.

It is idiotic the whole eBay stock management.

  • Just FYI: I was able to order 3 for delivery. I think the problem is with C&C.

    • Do GG deliver with authority to leave at front door or to parcel lockers?

      • The email confirmation said it could be delivered by my local store or via AusPost or via a Courier. In other words, a lottery.

    • Yes I just ordered 2 with delivery and it worked

  • Thanks op got two yesterday.

  • Cheers OP, price matched to $139 at jbhifi Altona.

  • These are compliant in NSW yeh? My sparky keeps saying to install standard detectors until i get OC.

Also was the $118 a pricing error last time?

    Cheers

    • Yea was pricing error but jb still honoured it. So until a hen 3 comes out I doubt it will go that cheap again. Hopefully this will all connect to the new nest trend network as well
