  • Would these be Gen 1 or Gen 2?

    • Gen 1 wasnt sold in Australia only Gen 2

      • Thanks

        • I have 5 of these, and they work perfectly :)

          • @asa79: 5 of them? Wow - do they do anything besides smoke alarming?

            • @beyondparadigms: lights on them

            • +1

@beyondparadigms: Yep, they light up when you walk under them… Just wish they were a bit brighter but is enough for my kids if they get up in the middle of the night.

Can also use them as sensors for whether anyone is home and have your Lifx bulbs automatically switch on and off randomly when your out.

              • @bamzero: you can control the brightness in the app, default isnt set to brightest setting

                • @asa79: Yeh already set to high

                  • @bamzero: Strange, I have one at bottom and top of stairs and in entry of each of the kids rooms, and seems bright enough that i dont stand on any lego pieces, its not made to light up the room like a light bulb just enough not to wake up the kids when you check in on them. Mine is on default brightness

              • @bamzero: Random on & off is with the Nest Learning Thermostat, not the Protect?

Home/Away Assist: You can't be in two places at once. When you're on vacation, your Nest Learning Thermostat will automatically trigger your LIFX lights to turn on and off at randomly, making it appear like someone is home for added piece of mind when you're away.

                • -1

@Ultraman: your right, the protect's motion sensor is only for the night light, no api available to use it for any other feature same as the mic

                • @Ultraman: When I first got my Protects (nearly 2 years ago now) I was able to use the Away feature with random on/off for LIFX.

Not something I use now but as far as I can see it still works with any Nest product supporting Away detection.

(Tried to have a look but for some reason the LIFX app is saying Nest currently unavailable so can't access any of the settings. If anyone else has LIFX and could try Nest under Integrations, be interested to know if its just me.)

                  • @bamzero: (Seems it was an issue with my ad blocker, was able to get to nest integration settings and can set random lights based on Protect away detection.)

              • @bamzero: Can change brightness in settings

            • +1

              @beyondparadigms: night light,
I have one in each bedroom, hallways etc as recommended by new regulations.

But they are all linked, so if the alarm goes off in kitchen all of them will communicate to tell you where the fire/smoke is.

Also linked up with Hue lights to turn on all the lights when alarm goes off, flashes red as well

          • @asa79: How do you evaluate their perfect operation?

            • +5

              @GregFiona: Burn some toast?

            • +10

@GregFiona: The kitchen one lets me know when the missus is cooking ;)

"There is smoke in the kitchen"

          • +1

@asa79: Wow cheap. I also have 5 of these (3 wired and 2 battery) the first ones i got from the deal you posted a few months ago.

Really good product and reassuring knowing you will receive phone notifications in the event of a fire.

            • @LowRange: Do you have them linked to a land line? or do they use a cloud service via the net? How does it work if the fire is due to an electric spark with a blown fuse?

              • @bargainshooter: Cloud service as its a nest protect, but no on going fees like the cameras
They have their own wifi network to communicate with each other if the wireless router goes down, but you would of already been alerted that the units are offline on your app

                • @asa79: Ok so the app constantly monitors the cloud service to confirm the units are connected. I guess if you network goes down you'd get the same alert? Can they be paired with some kind of back to base monitor via land line?

                  • @bargainshooter: the app is the cloud service and it can be configured to contact your local fire department

                    • @asa79: How do you set this up?

                      • @RangaWal: it really easy, just open app, turn on alarm, and it will find, put in your wireless details and thats pretty much it. Additional alarms are quicker as the previous will pass the wireless details to it

                    • @asa79: Are you sure it can contact the fire dept? I see there is an emergency contact in the app but it doesn't appear to call that number for you.

                      • @bargainshooter: There is a setting in the app
                        under Contacts -> Add contact

                        Local Fire Bridge
                        Local Police Station
                        Other

                        • @asa79: Yeah but it doesn't call that number on your behalf. It just presents it for you to call it. That's not the same thing as a monitoring service. For example if it only sends notifications to your mobile and you're away from home on a flight, your house will burn down before you get any notifications. That to me is a serious limitation. I got one because I want someone to be alerted when away from home but this won't do it.

                          • @bargainshooter: Ok I dont use that feature, either way if my house was on fire, getting alerted on phone and being shown the number that would still be great feature

                          • @bargainshooter: Why would you be delayed in getting notifications, its a cloud service

                            • @asa79: On a flight for example - no data. Phone turned off in a cinema. Phone battery too low and needs a recharge. In an environment where there is no mobile data. This requires you to have the phone on you and available at all times. They do provide an option for others to connect to your system but that option also allows them to add and remove devices - not the most practical when you want others to be alerted without managing the system.

Regarding the fire dept number - you could just call 000 so not sure it's such a great benefit.

                              • @bargainshooter: So which product has the feature your talking about without a monthly fee?

                                • @asa79: I'm not really that fused about a monthly fee especially for the added protection - especially given the investment required for some of these.

Most premises alarms provide a back to base feature. I used to have one at my office that was monitored by a security service - they would send patrols on intrusion detection or fire dept on smoke detection. We also had panic buttons on the console to get polic, ambulance, fire, etc…

The Panasonic Home Network product, with all its flaws, does have a land line out to call 5 predefined numbers and can be monitored by a security service.

I don't know of any other smart home products that call numbers but I haven't done any research. May do so in the next few days. Being tied to your mobile is not really that secure IMHO.

                                    • @asa79: Yeah have seen a few posts about different monitoring providers and will look into something in Australia. Just a shame Nest don't provide anything. They could easily send an sms message to a list of contacts covering themselves against their terms. They could even charge a supplied account for phone costs. To me this is a half baked solution.

                                      • @bargainshooter: Have you checked IFTTT? For example https://ifttt.com/applets/184872p-text-a-neighbor-when-your-…

You can use the Nest as a trigger for many actions like voip call, text, email, turning lights on etc.

                                        • @LowRange: I've considered it but my most basic premise is to limit external networked services for personal safety and security. All my current smart home facilities are firewalled and are only accessible externally via VPN except for this NEST product. I feel IFTTT would expose too many additional vulnerabilities. But thanks for the suggestion.

                                          • @bargainshooter: No problems, cant blame anyone for being security conscious with smart gear and what data goes in and out of the home. I'm pretty strict also, but do weight up risk vs reward and what im comfortable with.

For me i have no issue adding Nest to IFTTT, the risk is very low and the reward is high considering i can do things if my house is on fire like notifications to neighbours, turning lights on, turning off aircons/heaters/fans that can make the fire worse.

                                            • @LowRange: I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know if there's a call out facility via ifttt vs the sms?

    Thanks!

Bought a few during the JB hifi sale, have been waiting for another good deal on these!!

  • They have a microphone hidden in

      Only used for testing.

      • +4

Why do you need to keep a microphone for final product in the first place. This test can be conducted very easily when the user is home … It pretty easy for dev to develop this in the app where it looks on local network for connected devices, and reset time period which user can change.

        • +1

its done when the user is not home, same way you use a mic to adjust your speakers in a surround sound environment.

        • The answer is literally in the support link above.

        • +1

It doesn't 'need' it, but it's there for a good reason. Problem is the disclosure doesn't address whether or not there's a pathway between the mic and network connection, so it becomes a trust question similar to whether one trusts their laptop's webcam enough not to cover it.

          • @Jabba the Hutt: Guess you dont read either

            • @asa79: All it says is how they use the mic and that there's a software setting to disable the function that uses the mic. Security isn't addressed beyond the standard "takes security seriously" promise.

              • @Jabba the Hutt: Let me google that for you https://nest.com/support/article/Learn-more-about-Nest-Prote…
During Sound Check and Safety Checkup, Nest Protect's microphone is on for a few seconds — just long enough to make sure the speaker and horn are working. During that time, the microphone is checking to hear Nest Protect make this sound:

How long is the microphone on for?

Nest Protect's microphone is on for a few seconds during Sound Check and Safety Checkup, in order to record the test sound and compare the recording with the test sound it expects to hear.

The audio from Sound Check and Safety Checkup doesn't leave your Nest Protect and isn't transmitted to Nest servers.

You can also choose to skip a test any month. Once you've enabled notifications, Nest Protect can send you a message about five minutes before it runs a test, where you can choose to skip this month's test. Nest Protect will try again next month.

If you disable Sound Check, but you still want to test the speaker and horn, just run a Safety Checkup. The microphone in Nest Protect will listen for the speaker and horn every time you run a Safety Checkup, even if Sound Check is disabled.

We know that your home is a private space, and we've designed Sound Check and Safety Checkup with that in mind. You can read more about our commitment to user privacy here.

      "hurr durr we forgot."

      Morons buy this apparently.

  • Question for those familiar with Nest Protect Smoke & CO Alarm.

So, if a detectable event occurs downstairs, will the downstairs Nest Protect relay the notification (colour change or alarm noise) to other Nest Protects in the house?

Different room, tv turned up, not sure if the existing smoke alarm would even be heard.

    • Yes, it will alert all units and will speak in an audible warning before it alarms on all units

      https://nest.com/au/smoke-co-alarm/overview/

    • -2

      Through ifttt yes

    • Along with multiple nest being networked, if you use a logitech Harmony to control your TV you can integrate the Nest and Harmony such that the Harmony will mute or power off the TV when an alarm triggers.

  • How long would the battery last?

    • around 5 or so years before changing

      • +8

It probably depends on how often the missus cooks ;)

    • +1

I have 2 wired and 3 battery models. So far the battery units are 2 years old and still going strong. You can replace the AA batteries yourself when they do go flat.

  • Does the battery version have the option of wired?

    • no

    • Seems the wired version has battery support, albeit half the cells. At half the lifespan at 2.5 years, that's still pretty impressive. Standard 9v units only last AC year or 2,and these things do a whole lot more.

  • Do they all still go off together if the power goes out?

    • +1

      yes

    • +1

Yes they have their own wifi communication, outside of the communication to your wireless network

  • Is it hard to unclip these to replace the batteries?

    • +1

      no just twist and off

  • Anyone run a nest + ring system connected via a smart hub? Planning on picking up the ring cameras for our new place, but we also need smoke detectors.

    • +1

I run the Nest and Ring cameras but i dont have a hub. If the Nest alerted me to smoke, i'd just pull up one of the cameras on the Ring app.

    • I dont have the nest cameras, but supposedly if you have a camera in same area you can be alerted on the phone with camera footage of the area

  • +2

I can't get this checkout code to work.

    • It works for me, but when place my order I get some checkout failed error.

"Something went wrong. Please try to check out again"

I've tried both tablet and PC browser.

    • It works in the webpage ebay, what are you using?

      Voucher/couponPEEL20Applied: AU $29.80Applied: AU $29.80

    • Tried this on mobile and desktop web, on home wifi and on mobile 4G.
They all reply the same: "This code can't be applied to your order."

I've emailed TGG through eBay about this.

      • Let me know how you get on mate. I'm getting the same issue - using click and collect for Pakenham…

        • Sorry, I still have no luck with this code, and no answer from TGG.
I've even since tried it with the eBay app.
I would like to know how many here have actually transacted today with the code listed in this thread?

        • Finally success. Spoke with eBay.
Apparently, my account was tied to the US, not AUS. I originally created an account back when eBay was US only and it was never migrated when AUS operations started.
It took the helpful lady 30 seconds to fix, and have now purchased two.

          • @Brausmith: Cool, I'll go check it out. I tried under my wife's account and no dice either… Points to user error!

            Will hit up support.

  • Anyone know if you can you buy the wired version but not wire them in (use them as battery versions) - until one day potentially having them wired in? (I see there's only 3 (wired) vs 6 batteries (battery version) - only lasts 2.5 years?)

    • +2

They are hardwired, with battery backup, you might be better just getting battery units.

The battery-powered model takes six AA batteries
The wired one has three for backup.
Battery life of battery unit is supposed to be around five years.

Tho for what it does night light, text to speech voice processing, wifi communication, 5 years is a long time for all that functions.

I have 5 Battery units as couldnt justify the electrician wiring cost ontop of the unit. Cheaper to buy another set of battery after 5 years

  • can one of these work with normal wired detectors?

    • +1

      Yes and No

You can have other branded units in your house, but this wont communicate with them, so you wont get the other brand to trigger in say a bedroom if this goes off in the kitchen, you need to have nests in each area of house for that

  • +1

I have 8 of these installed in my home.

Highly recommend them as they are all interconnected, so all will work simultaneously if one reports smoke.

What is also great is a detailed report is sent to me each month with its stats etc, not to mention Pathlight :)

    Cheers

    • One for each bedroom + kitchens?

      • +1

https://www.qfes.qld.gov.au/community-safety/smokealarms/Pag… there is a diagram on recommended set ups for houses

        Alarm Placemenet

        on each storey
        in each bedroom
in hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling
if there is no hallway, between the bedroom and other parts of the storey; and
if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.

        • Unfortunately the nest protect don't meet the idiotic requirements for the new qld legislation. Not that I really care, as it only matters I guesss if you are selling. The new QLD ones "mandate" 10 year backup battery, and non replaceable battery!!!

          • +2

@Mobe1969: Yep but still does make me feel more comfortable about my kids safety if in the case something bad happens

            • @asa79: Yeah that is my thoughts as well. Just government idiots as usual…How on earth can features hat make it better (eg replaceable batteries) make it non compliant?

            • @asa79: What kind of area does one unit cover? Also what's the volume in dB?
