43610
GAME20

MOD: Please note that users here have reported:
- system issues
- accounts no longer accessible
- user information may be exposed
- being told that, something went wrong with the database yesterday, a lot of information was lost, Staples are working to recover the information, meanwhile new customers are being assigned id numbers that actually belong to customers created just before the big crash and then the new id numbers are hooked up to the old history -> new customers can see other people's data

update:
- some people are now reporting that they can get back into their accounts though they can see other people's accounts
- some people are also reporting that they've received their orders now

update 20 May 2011:
- people are reporting items received
- people can use the code, though it may be better to play 1 round of the game (you don't have to win) and have them email confirmation of the eligibility to you

Link now changed to the link to the game

      • omg that code doesn't work no more.. they must be following this thread… or the code was only valid for a 1 off purchase

        • Ta for the code - word to my dawgs ferner and tooten69. but unfortunately the code doesn't work for me now.

Damn that ninja mod cost me $20 (or maybe saved me $5 by me not ordering any more stuff)

      • lol any more codes that we have worked out?
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/26039/contact
        thanks :P

  • Received now. ordered 3:45 on 17 May. Great service Staples. airbags kept mine stable in the box.

    • Shipping is probably by random orders as I've ordered mine before 3pm on 17 May and just only received dispatch notice.

  • luckily mine works….but there was no cushioning inside the large box it arrived in…which was smashed in at one end…miracle it survived, had to LOL at the other persons box having cuhisioning in it for a PEN

    • still neg?

  • can u revoke a neg?

  • Receieved mine today, I ordered at about 2pm on Tuesday; I'm in Adelaide.

  • After contacting staples, I received an email, looks like it's all good. I can also log back in.

  • My order including the HDD arrived today (in Melbourne), ordered on Tuesday afternoon. Packaging was not good, no filling material at all, although because I had ordered some other stuff, it was mostly full (but could still move around). Currently checking HDD to make sure everything's okay.

    • +2

Not sure why you were negged for receiving bad packaging.

My order shipped to Melbourne arrived yesterday. I only ordered the HDD and it came in a big box with no filling material. So the HDD box could have been slippin' and slidin' around during transit.

Fingers crossed it's all ok, for this was great deal. :)

  • +4

i got my order today. Very happy with Staples and how they're honouring the orders, despite being "Ozbargained"

I'll be glad to purchase from them again :)

  • I called them today and customer service was patient and pleasantly explained that the orders were being processed. Staples will be in my favorites list :D

to the other 12 neggers (no pun intended), you could at least revoke the vote.

    • Doesn't look like you've vote them +?

      • +1

I revoked my vote but now I wanna + again and OZBargain won't let me!!!

  • People were way too quick to make assumptions and neg this deal. So far everything is looking good and I just got my "your card has been charged and your order is on the way" email. It was sent to my junk mail for those who might not check that folder.

    • +1

To be fair, it's looking good now, but Staples did have problems with its database, revealing customer details to those unauthorised to view them. From memory, that would be a valid reason to neg.

  • Okay I unboxed my Verbatim USB3.0 drive.
    Initial impressions:

    Pros:
    Very Solid metal body
    Extremly quite.
Speed on UBS2 is not bad.
USB Cable is decent quality and thick. (But.. check Cons)
    Price. Best Bargain Ever.

    Cons:
USB and Power Cable are extremly short.
Power Cable is way too thin.
Comes with fat32. Doing a full NTFS format atm (which will take many painful hours)
Wish it was a Samsung Story for that price. lol

    • Why is a thin power cable bad?
I thought changing to NTFS only took a few minutes.

      • -4

        quick format takes few seconds.
        full format takes many hours.
I prefer to start off with a full format.

The thin Power cable is bad cause you can easily damage the cable and then you are stuffed. Its as thin as cheap 1$ earphone cable. while the usb3 cable is very thick, the thickest I have ever seen.

        • +5

There's no reason to do a full format on a brand new drive, unless you actively go around purchasing drives with bad sectors.

Save yourself the wait and do a quick format next time :)

        • I just do it for peace of mind.
Personally I think its a good test.
I know the wait is painful.
          anyways I now have a Samsung Story USB2 1.5TB and the Verbatim USB3 1TB.
I was planning to get the Samsung Story USB3 2TB, but the cheapest was $123 and I was waiting for it to drop down to $100 then staples had this offer so grabbed a 1TB instead.
I think my next one is gonna be a 3TB Samsung Story but that won't be anytime soon.

        • It's a good test of your patience! But you're eating into the MTBF of your drive by 0.0001% :P

This was a great price for a 1TB USB3 drive, you were lucky you managed to get it!

        • Even if it was reformatted with NTFS you still wouldn't know if there were subsequent bad sectors (since manufacture) for your piece of mind unless you did another full format ;-)

        • anyways I moved my notebook and teh drive got disconnected on 20% full format :-(
so I just did a quick NTFS instead.

    • I am gonna do a full NTFS format. Can I know what's the advantage of doing this? Cheers.

      • Fat32 can't store file sizes greater than 4gb

  • My order arrived today dumped on my doorstep where anybody can pick it up. The packaging was poor. Even though it was a frame with glass there was no fragile sticker on it. As a result when I opened it the glass was BROKEN. Disappointing for a company that delivers to customers all the time. I'll have to call them tomorrow…

    • +2

Officeworks did that to me once, Some packers are not always smart. I think you had very bad luck.

    • Even better, the external box has a sticker from Staples describing the contents (right down to the USB3 speed) if someone was curious. No need for it as a "fragile" sticker would suffice. Lucky I was home :-)

    • That's curious…I had to sign for my package.

You should ask them for one of those $20 vouchers floating around to compensate for the frustration they put you through ;-)

    • Having a fragile sticker may not have helped you all that much. I have watched five couriers in a row drop boxes on my doorstep that have 'fragile' stamped all over them. It's a miracle anything survives when couriers are careless.

    • Same applies in airports. I once had 3 Fragile lablels on an item and the stupid idiot was extra rough with the item.

  • +10

Mine arrived today and I have taken it apart.

The drive inside is a Samsung HD103SI 1000GB/R54/32M.

I plan on swapping the 1TB samsung HD drive with an existing WD from my PC. This is my way of retiring older HD from my PC before they die a natural click of death. The good news is the Verbatim enclosure can be re-used unlike the WD externals. Nothing is destroyed in taking the unit apart. I am assuming the Verbatim enclosure will operate with drives other than samsungs. I haven't had a chance to verify this as yet as I'm in the process of migrating the existing data.

For those interested, here are my steps for taking the unit apart and of course, I take NO responsibility for any of the instructions provided or for you voiding your warranty. I figured for $35, the risk was worth taking for me.

    1. Turn the unit upside down.
    2. Towards the back face plate, you will find 3 rectangle holes. The 3 holes give access to 3 clips that hold the back face plate in place.
    3. Using a small flat head screw driver, gently press each clip down whilst gently pushing the back face plate upwards.
    4. Once each clips are undone, the back face plate simply slides off.
    5. Turn the unit around so that the rubber feets are on the table.
    6. Slide the top metal casing of to expose the internals.

From here, its a simple matter of undoing the philips screws holding the drive to the enclosure.

Here is a picture of the samsung drive and enclosure internals. I've blanked the identifying details out incase I need warranty later on.

    http://upload.ozbargain.com/2011/05/19/5903_verbatim1tb.jpg

    • Wait… what… there is no "warranty void" seal that you need to break?

      • the HDD itself has warranty from Samsung i suppose, don't all the HDDs work this way nowadays? with the serial number and all?

      • Yes there is a Warranty void if seal is broken

      • +2

I wasn't going to let a little warranty void sticker stop me. It's $35, even your msy ritmo yum cha branded USB3.0 enclosures cost that much standalone + who knows how much it would cost me to send back for warranty anyway! Worst comes to worst, I'm going to plead ignorance. The sticker must have fallen off or something because there was never no warranty void sticker on my drive :)

Anyway the Verbatim drive is no more. Moved it into my eSata enclosure, formated to NTFS, and now migrating data to it before ripping an existing drive from my pc and putting it back into my verbatim enclosure. The samsung is relatively slow as I'm only getting approx 70MB/s and that is constantly declining as I copy more data to it as expected. The WD and seagates I have sit at around 80 to 90 before dropping to around 40 near capacity.

        • lol its a 5400 drive what u think? green drive called green for a reason ;)

        • @Jasecs
I have no idea why people keep negging comments about green drives! They have a higher rate of failure than normal harddrives and are slower!

        • @cwongtech
im not neg the comment? learn to read.

this dude above said the samsung is abit slow compare to his other drives. I am reminding him that this samsung drive in the case is a 5400rpm..unlike others 7200rpm drives

        • +1

          @jasecs
I think he was agreeing with you. Someone had negged your comment earlier.

        • @jasecs
          You learn to read.
I was agreeing with you, and I pos'd the neg vote on your comment.
Other people don't seem to realise that green drives aren't fast, and they have a higher failure rate.

        • Hmm, that's the problem with the anonymous neg on comments, it leads to so much misinterpretation & confusion if the wording by either party is unintentionally ambiguous!

If the negs on comments were visible as well, at least we'd all know where we stand…and I'm sure we'd all be willing to man-up to our negs!

    • +6

Good news for those who want to re-use the enclosure. I can confirm that it works with non-samsung branded drives. Well I can confirm that it works with the seagate one that I replaced it with. Will try a WD when I get the chance.

The enclosure is not the most ideal unit given that the lenght of the USB and power cables are a real concern, especially the power cable.

A video of the entire process.

  • Guys…

cam anybody do me a favour?
Install HDD Tune Pro (free trial) then go to the Extra Tests tab and click start.
The sounds that come out of the HDD is the most weird I have ever heared.

I tested same with my Samsung Story 1.5TB Ecogreen F2 and it sounds more normal.

Can anybody confiem that the sound is normal?

    Cheers

    • If you mean the loud intermittent noise the unit makes (SIX intermittent noises every time you turn it on), this is normal..

      • no I dont mean that. It sounds totally different and weird. (more like scratching noise that doesnt sound right)

        • Mine also has a scratching noise.

      • are you getting the same noises when you turn the unit on? (SIX intermittent loud noises) other people too?

        • You get the normal less 1 sec noise and it sounds normal and same as my Samsung Story drive.

But the HDD Tune test sounds really weird. can anybody test with Extra Tests using HDD Tune Pro (free trial)

        • Guys,

could you please watch this video

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbqPo0NhaRQ

and let me know if you are having this noise when turning the Verbatim HD on, I am having the exact same noise appears in the video and would like to know if you are getting the same too, just when you turn it on without using any software. Please be specific, Cheers.

        • +1

I didn't count, but thats what my mine sounds like.

  • Duplicate..

  • My paper and lecture pads arrived today. Order was despatched yesterday at 2:15PM

  • Big plus, received my box of paper and a pen (had to use up the $20) the next day, total cost $7!!

  • Heat of for Staples. Got mine 2 days after the order. Respect

  • So, is the code still working?

    • I used it last night to purchase a mouse so it should be working, just give it a go, nothing to lose

      • Except your privacy if you don't want random strangers to know name/address/phone number/mother's maiden name/email addy… Maybe I'll change my tune if my order ever turns up.

        • Those issues are clearly stated on the original post now by the mod - ordering from Staples is obviously at your own risk at this point. I'm just letting him know the code was still working since last night.

  • Myn was delivered yesterday with Star Track Express and I wasn't home to accept delivery was suppose to be rescheduled for today and just called them again to confirm and now they don't know where it is…. Why did't they just send it via AU Post FFS!! it was only a HDD I ordered….

  • +3

My order of 1 box of paper must of got lonely coz they delivered 2 boxes!

$11 for $40 of paper, bargain!

  • +3

Just got harddrive delivered. One of the best deals I have found on this site.

    • +2

got it just now, love the courier service!

  • +1

Wow that was quick. Order received. Nice!

  • Fantastic, rec'd my goods today! Corporate Express packed my order.

Hope they've sorted out their privacy issues, just in case l've now altered all my account details.

  • Just got mine all good :)

  • Pardon my ignorance, but would anyone here have any idea why I'm getting a bsod every time I try to hook it up to my laptop that is running Vista? This is through USB 2.0

    • try another usb port.

      • Tried them all…might be some problem with something called partmgr? The bsod is a bit too short for me to read everything

        • +1

          reinstall windows

    • I'd try it on another device, see if it's the usb or your laptop which has the issue.

  • I ordered on 18th after all the stuffups with the site and it was posted today.

  • My items arrived today thanks staples…

  • Forgive me for not reading all 8 pages but:

Is there a link to the game so i can play it to get the coupon? (It has been removed from the deal)

Why are the coupon codes being deleted by the moderators?

Can someome email me the coupon codes from my contact page?

    Thanks

  • Placed my order yesterday afternoon and it had arrived by lunch today. Thanks OP, top deal.

  • It makes a lot of sense now, staples is not a new or small company at all. They are basically Corporate Express, and they are now getting direct to public sales. Was wondering how a newish company can manage to pull off $20 discounts etc.

They have been supplying to corporates, organisations, small business etc for a long time now. Smart move, they should've entered the market a long time ago. Prices are not the cheapest though (referring to corporate express' catalogues), maybe now that they are entering into the consumer market things will change.

    • Corporate Express Aust was (is) part of the multi billion dollar Amsterdam based Corporate Express business that was taken over by Staples (US based) an even bigger multi billion dollar business in 2008.

Incidentally that Verbatim hard drive is currently $89.99 on their US site (not on special)

  • Hi guys, could you please watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbqPo0NhaRQ and let me know if you are having this weird noise when turning the Verbatim HD on, I am having the exact same noise that appears in the YouTube video when I turn it on and would like to know if you are getting the same too, please be specific. Cheers.

    • +1

      Yes.

I don't know that I can be more specific in reply to your question, but from memory, the noise occurs 6 times in succession. That is, before the "installing drivers" bubble pops up and I get a bsod on my vista. Works fine on my xp desktop though…

      • Thanks mate for replying, so you got this weird noise that occurs 6 times in succession every time you turn the drive on and connect it to your computer or just happened only the first time you used the drive and never happened again? I am having it every time I turn it on and connect it to my computer… thanks again..

        • Every time it turns on. I didn't think much of it though. Do you think it's a problem?

      • Thanks again for replying. No I don't think it's a problem since many people have reported experiencing the same noises. I do get them too every time it turns on but the drive works fine so I think it is just how it is supposed to work :)

  • Who can sign for delivery?

    • They never asked me for ID when I signed for my delivery. >_>

      • That would be a bit ridiculous, what if someone didn't have a license?
They'll just come back with a pitchfork if someone yells out they didn't deliver it. :)

        • You don't need a license to have ID. I don't have a license.

The driver didn't even ask who I am. he just told me to sign the screen, I could have been anyone.

        • My order is coming tomorrow…
          I won't be at home.
However, I will have someone at collect it.

          Will this be fine?

        • @josephchi

          yeah it will be fine

the courier just needs to know that you live there(i.e. to open the door)

  • nvm………….
