  • I read comments that there were issues in the past with some Boost sims not being able to connect to 4G properly - is that with these ones?

Picked up 2 nano sims from Officeworks early today, and there was one of these ones there. Didn’t even realise that these were 5c, but we needed 2, so just grabbed 2 of the new ones anyway.

    • -2

      It is only for 3G

      • +1

        It's the full Telstra network

        • But no 4G ?

        • +5

Boost is on full telstra network, but is it possible this sim is only 3G capable and that's the reason they're clearing it out for 5c?

Couldn't see mention of 4G in product description, that's why i'm unsure of committing my 5c haha.

    • +2

Well you can grab a whole lot at once, not one per order with telstra

    • Sorry I am incredibly stupid.. how do we use this telstra sim with a boost prepaid mobile plan?

      • +3

You can't and that is why you would pay 5c (or $2) if you want to go on boost and their recently released excellent plans.

        • -3

So I just ordered a free sim for no reason just now if I wanna signup with Boost Prepaid Mobile? oh man bad Taneda1988 bad..misleading

          • @AlienC: Yes, even though Boost use the Telstra network they offer different plans. AFAIK you can’t use a Telstra sim and sign up to the boost plans/service and vice versa.

You will need to purchase a boost SIM card to sign up for the boost offers.

If you don’t have an Officeworks close by you can pick them up from many places such as coles or woolies, the post office and most newsagents.

            • @4892: How much is it at coles or woolies.. 5 cents or 2 dollars

              • @AlienC: It’s $2 elsewhere which is the standard price.

          • -3

@AlienC: I am referring to OP's first comment
"a great option if you are wanting to port out of your current service and back in again"
If you don't understand why we true ozbargainers port out and in regularly, then just go to bed early and get a good sleep.
Attacking others never helps you look smart, if you aren't. :)

          • +2

@AlienC: I don't even understand what you trying to articulate here

            • @tempura:

If you don’t have an Officeworks close by you can pick them up from many places such as coles or woolies, the post office and most newsagents.

How much is a boost sim from these places because online it is $2 is it same price in these stores

              • @AlienC: I was referring to this comment:

So I just ordered a free sim for no reason just now if I wanna signup with Boost Prepaid Mobile? oh man bad Taneda1988 bad..misleading

                • @tempura: That user implied we could use a telstra sim for a boost mobile plan so I ordered one then later found out you cannot use a telstra sum for a boost mobile prepaid plan so now I have a random sim on the way.. Feelsbadman

                  I got bamboozled man.

                  • -4

                    @AlienC: Oh wow
I was actually implying you should transfer $5 million to my bank account. Did you follow?

                    • @AsukaST: Looks like we got another one folks.

                      Grabs popcorn.

                      Welcome to ozbargain friend.

The decline of ozbargain has started.

          • @AlienC: Then why the duck did you upvote if you think it is not a deal.

            • @No ONE: The post which refers to boost mobile sim being 5c instead of $2 is a deal because of the previous boost mobile prepaid plan deal that has 800+ upvotes right now but what Taneda1988 commented about free telstra sim was not because current telstra plans are not as a good deal or a bargain so the comment was related but not relevant or really helpful.

TL;DR free telstra sim is good but telstra mobile plan not so good. Boost mobile prepaid plan right now = good

        • so this sim would be good to go with current boost yearly plan without losing the 4G?

  • +4

    pay split payment
    Pay $0.03 on card

    Savings

    • +3

      Genius!

    • -1

If you split 0.01 at a time, do they round it to 0?

      • -3

Just spilt the purchase of an iPad 400,000 times. Free iPad lol donk

        • It only rounds to nothing once there's $0.02 left. Maximum you can ever write off on this way is $0.02 per transaction.

      • No. The split payment makes you pay with card FIRST, meaning that portion doesn't round down (only cash rounds). The maximum you can write off is always $0.02 per transaction.

    • +1

Bonus points if you don't use self serve btw

      True Ozbargain style.

  • How long can I keep these in the drawer and not use them?

    • They have an expiry date on the back - mine was June this year.

    • +3

You are allowed keep them in the draw forever and never use them

      • The thin gold layer could be worth a lot in a few thousand years.

        • Future passed down heirlooms and potential financial inheritance currency

  • Shows out of stock for me.

    • I ordered 1 20 mins ago. Ready to pick up. South Melbourne

      • +4

what are you going to do with 120 of them?

        • +1

He chewed one every 20 mins.

  • +2

Can I activate boost sim with no recharge?

    • I would also like to know

    • +1

      Yes, you can.

  • Thanks OP

Can somebody please advise if there are differences between this $2 SIM and the one from Boost Website? (other than the size of course).
We will be switching to this offer so wondering if these 5 cents SIM will work.

    Thanks

    • +1

Yes, the reason these are on special is because their expiry date is 30 May 2019. The store I went to have a few of these discounted ones and the newer batch (multi-fit) of SIMs. Also, these ones appear to have a prepaid number pre-allocated on the SIM (at least the packaging shows the mobile number - none of them has a good number anyway).

It is not really ideal for me, because I was hoping to get one that I can activate Oct 2019 (on Optus Epic 180 plan, but really want to be on Boost one). Losing too much if I switch to Boost in May.

Perfect for people wanting to take on the Boost plan right now.

      • hopefully mine won't expire on 30 May 2019. im going to pick them up later.

        • me too, ordered just sufficient for my family as we will be porting to the offer mentioned by Bappy.

          Thanks all.

        • I had a few of their $30 sims with an Oct 2020 expiry and when I checked them last October they had all expired.

        • Just got them. They expire on 30 May 2019.

        • Picked up this morning, silly me didn't check as they were packed nicely in an OW paper bag.

Opened them after dinner today, 2 expired back in May 2017 and the third expired April 2018.

Does anyone know if they will work or will I have to return to OW and get them exchanged?

  • -3

    got 20 from Windsor Brisbane

    • mine expire 30th of May

  • +1

Can these be used to receive calls and text upon activation with no credit?

    • got a couple of text before recharging.

      not sure about calls

  • +1

I've just grabbed a $2 sim via Cashrewards (claims $10 cashback for new customers if activated within 30 days). See how it goes.

    • +3

The cashback on a $2 sim is 50 cents

      • Yeah. I believe that they must’ve just skimmed the page, and gotten mixed up between the $2 cashback for $10 sim and the $0.50 cashback for $2 sim. :/

    • Not sure where you were looking, but on that link it says $0.50 cashback for a $2 sim, and $2.00 cashback for a $10 sim.

      • Hah, so it is!

  • +1

Might be worth noting (for those of us that still use MMS) that there is a limit of 500kb per picture/video message, per recipient.
I'm currently with Aldi, which offers 2MB limit, which is barely sufficient…

    • Wow I did not know there were different limits of picture and video messages between carriers or plans.

This may be a deal breaker as I am constantly sending photographs of things and documents etc via mms

      • WhatsApp.

        • If only it was as pervasive as facebook messenger but not even everybody has that.. Viber is a good option too

  • ozbargained already?

  • +2

Thx, had to convince the manager to give me the long expiry date 27 AUG 2020 once for the same price 5cent :) lol

    • I was fortunate. I ordered four and three of them had expired back in November 2018. I told the cashier and she was shocked. I grabbed three new ones off the shelf and she said that was fine, all with August 2020 expiry.

  • -1

You know if you call up they will post you one or more for free?

  • +4

These cheap sims are amazing for using Ubereats first purchases.

    • +2

      please tell me more.

  • Need to fill in the credit card details when for porting use? Because such as Optus has change their $2 sim activation policy last year(2017 still be normal for activation and recharging later), you have to choose a plan to recharge and fill in the card details. It must ban the porting purpose.

  • +1

Out of stock in Melbourne 3000.

  • They’re good for heyyou credit of $15 grabbed a bunch of these cards. Free lunch and dinner for a few weeks.

  • Still 6 or so left in North Sydney

    • And Chatswood - can reload fine on the deal

  • Picked mine up today. Expiry 30 may 2019 @ 14 june 2019

  • Still have quite a few in officework malaga WA if any interested.

  • I would like to sign up to the boost 80G prepaid plan. This seems like a great offer to get the sim quick and cheap. But I'm a bit confused by why comments stating there is no 4G? Thanks

    • +1

Boost definitely has Telstra 4G. A few years back Boost SIM cards did not connect to 4G for some reason. If you have trouble with this SIM then just contact Boost and they will sort it out.

  • Plenty at Kotara NSW store.

  • Went into my local store (had stock according to website).

Staff member pointed me to the SIMS, couldnt find one of the $0.05 ones.

Asked them if they had any in stock, he reluctantly checks, they have 9.

Try again, cant find it, check with the dude again and he says that they are probably sent back.

Go home, put in click and collect order via website.

Get SMS at 7.25am next day, pick up ready in its a paper bag with 2 printed receipts.

Hope the guy that wouldn't help me had to bag it for me.

    Thanks for the post
