  • 500gb is $219

I received a text today from Kogan that their network coverage has "doubled". I'm guessing they are somehow referring to the Optus-Virgin agreement of sharing towers in regional areas.

500GB for $219 is a great deal for those that need that amount of data.

    • Virgin? There are no virgins in the phone business.

      • Lel

      • Vodafone, sorry. :-).

I had an absolutely terrible experience porting into Kogan Mobile, details here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890822#comment-16212902

To swap an eSIM is an ordeal and a half, you have to fill in this form and wait 24 hours for them to contact you: https://vha.my.salesforce-sites.com/ConfirmIdentityRequest?b…

I'm now in the process of porting out from Kogan, it is simply not worth the trouble.

    • +12

      Happens occasionally with any provider.

      • I've had Vodafone, Optus, Telstra, Woolworths Mobile before. Never had any issue like this with any of them.

        • +6

Maybe that's how the dice rolled for you on those days. Do you think people with different

experiences just make it up for giggles ? I have personally had issues with all telcos over my 13+

years with dozens of sim hopping and over 200 new sim activations.

@ozhunter68: "Do you think people with different experiences just make it up for giggles?"

I never challenged the responder's experience. I'm simply replying that I have personally never experienced issues with any of the providers that I listed, and I conceed that I mainly use major network providers rather than MVNOs (mobile virtural network operators, like Kogan)

Similar to your logic, my experience does not invalidate the repliers (or yours) and vice versa.

However, it is beyond just experience. Kogan Mobile's technology stack is objectively worse. I linked to the salesforce form that I had to fill out, it has the subdomain "vha", that's Vodafone Hutchinson Australia. It is ancient.

Emails from Kogan result in a domain verification warning. These are not my subjective experience, they are objective facts.

I ported out to Woolworths Mobile again, it took about 30 minutes and everything works. A 365 day recharge was $230; that's a $61 difference over a year, or $5 a month. To me, Kogan's subpar tech stack is not worth the trouble, but you may have a different opinion and that's okay.

            • +2

@crankyjay: I respect your detailed explanation for your opinions, they are certainly valid. Funnily enough I have also stopped using Kogan mobile for over 2 years for various reasons, mainly no longer offering free or $1-$5 Sims I mainly used for burning cheap data lol. I have a friend who loves the rock bottom Kogan deals, and now they have improved coverage and remain cheap he will be there for a while longer. That's probably their market, super rock bottom as you say in more ways than one.

            • @crankyjay: Eh, sometimes crap happens. It sucks. Not defending Kogan but its a bit harsh to neg for something countless ppl could say accross all telcos. Exception cases happen in porting and provisioning for all telcos literally every day, irrespective of the technology stack. I know, I've worked for multiple over the past 20+ years. Had my share of crap experiences as a consumer too.

              • +3

@Xizor: According to the ozbargain voting guidelines, we should use negative votes if there are "Issue with product" or "Issue with retailer".

A neg's purpose is "To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product."

                https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

In my opinion, based on my recent experience with Kogan, their ancient technology stack, slow processes and broken functionality with iMessage (outlined in the other thread) justifies a negative vote.

I don't think it is harsh, I'm simply providing an additional data point for viewers of this thread. I tried Kogan Mobile yesterday because I saw it on that previous deal; if I had seen a discussion thread like this, even if responders suggest that it's an isolated incident, I would have stayed away from Kogan Mobile - because it is not wortht the risk. Hopefully this negative vote and discourse can help someone else who is just on the fence about it.

                • @crankyjay: That's cool, you do you, and if you have more reasons for the neg fare enough. My point was porting and provisioning issues happen, to every carrier, and porting has specific coverage under ACIF regulations because of that. Literally every telco deal could be negged for that reason, which would be a bit pointless. Their ancient technology unfortunately is true almost every MVNO i have ever worked with (and i know several that are worse), what i can say is without competent people who give a damn, which gets rarer every year, the technology stack means little. Enjoy your night.

                  • @Xizor: I've ported a bit to all telcos. I've only had problems porting with Telstra (twice) and Optus once. So from my experience I would say Telstra is the worst.

    • Same. They lost my number. I am talking years ago but it still happened and I’ll never try them again

      • How?

        • Great question! I ported over from another provider, submitted the transfer to Kogan with old provider (Optus I think) that sim was inactive, port was made at their end. Then put in the Kogan SIM … nothing … customer service (at the time) was useless. Waited 1, 2, 3 days nothing… so I just had to get a new number, couldn’t live without a phone/number for any longer

          • +1

@sniffa: I recall having issues with them like over 10 years ago. Can't remember specific details but they had to send me another SIM and assured me i won't/can't lose my number, they hold onto it.

But yeah since then i never went back to Kogan, only dealt with Boost and Optus (but even Optus was tough, had to do it via chat and the cs rep thought i was bringing my number over to a post paid plan and was in the middle of setting an account up for me, even though i told her i had a 365 day pre-paid sim starter pack multiple times lol)

    • My esim swapover was 15 minutes and the savings vs amaysim were absolutely worth the trouble.
With vodafones massive expansion they're doing at the moment it makes it even better.

I did have an issue with Kogan YEARS ago, before they closed their original KoganMobile down

      • +1

        Do you have an iPhone?

Cause after the whole eSIM muck around I experienced, iMessage still didn’t work with the correct number, it detects the old pre-port number from the network and would not reset to the correct number.

        • Yeah, iPhone 12 Pro
ah, I ported my existing number, not porting a new number (whatever that is?)

          • +1

@Darude Sandstorm: It would not work on iPhone 13 for me; it is an existing number, and iMessage would not display that existing number, it only displays the Kogan issued new number from when the eSIM was activated.

            • @crankyjay: This has happened to me. It means the port didn't successfully go through. You need to call Kogan and ask them to redo the port.

              • +1

@blingerz: I called them 3 times trying to get things sorted and ended up just porting out in the end cause they couldn't figure out what the problem was; everything is working fine now with the same number on woolies mobile

    • If your physical SIM is broken or lost, then this is normal. They have to confirm that you are indeed the owner of the number. It happened to me the other way around (my phone with the eSIM stopped working, so I couldn't use my number for a few days until I could prove my identity).

If you were able to receive text messages when you applied for the swap, then yes, this is weird.

  • +1

    Do they include 5G?

    • +1

      Doesnt seem like it.

    • Only on the $40 p/m plan

    • Sidenote, I was with Amaysim, they introduced 5G and capped it at 100Mbps
Leaving it on 4G I'd regularly get 140Mbps and the same ping, was weird.

  • +1

Does Kogan include an international calls?

    • +2

No. That's the dealbreaker for me with Kogan. They do sell international call "packs". Plans say "Additional international roaming, international call, and data packs available"

    • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890037 get the lebara deal if you want international mins

    • Paid the extra on International roaming at Bali and it was crap. Got a refund

  • +1

Others may have different experiences but my Kogan experience has been crap. Ordered one last year for my spare phone to use as 4G hotspot / GPS for my car and service keeps dropping. LTE does not even load at work (10km from Melbourne CBD) while my main phone (Telstra network) is fine.

    • +2

As they say, check your area first for All 3 providers as YMMV.

      • +1

All providers are not YMMV. I’ve had consistently better results with Telstra and Optus as opposed to Vodafone and other Vodafone MVNOs

        • Yes, and yes as often that's correct, but for many others not.

  • No 5g yet?

    • Only in the 40 dollar per month plan.

  • +1

Careful with the 500Gig sim , it expires one month earlier than the other two.

    • Great spot!

  • lebara is better

      • Only for New customers and only for the next week
        Aside from that Kogan better
  • Here is an alternative for any one who want a slightly better data and international.calling (but annoyingly 360 days only) for $139 with 220GB data from Lebara
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890037

  • I was with kogan and the reception was fine.

    • How is your username not banned?

      • +2

Why would it be banned? It matches the theme/purpose of this website. If you are refering to it sounding like a bad word, then I guess deals on salt & vinegar chips would be banned too using same logic.

  • Worth pointing out… "must be redeemed by 11:59PM AEDT on 28/02/2025"

  • +1

As a person who has used the newly shared towers with Optus for 2 weeks straight, I can tell you that it is a horrible experience. You are not treated first word citizen, meaning that Optus customers have priority and your device occupies empty space on the tower if available. The internet is very very slow or inexistent on Optus towers as a Vodafone client.

    • Agreed would not go with Kogan ever again! My calm quality is worse and signal not much better

  • Does this cover wifi calling? my house has really crap mobile reception tin roof + solar panel = no phone reception inside.

  • +1

I got that catch deal the other day and they use the Optus network. They said my phone was on the banned list of devices and they want me to buy an approved phone from an Optus retailer instead so I could connect to their network.

So if anyone else has a Poco X3 Pro or equivalent, stick to Kogan, because it works.

  • +1

500gb plan deal seems to have ended

  • Thinking of jumping on this.
Anyone have issues running a VPN connection over the Kogan service? I’m currently with Lebara and it seems that recently they have blocked the ability to VPN out from your device over their network.

  • I am existing Kogan mobile customer. It says Offer does not apply to subsequent recharges. But it also says…….valid for new and existing Kogan Mobile customers…..

Can I use it for recharge? (300GB plan)
