i just hold off buying everything these days until one of these COTD mystery items comes up…

  • +4

By trading my $3.99 for something worth $30, soon I'll have a house.

    • +6

first you have to swap the $30 for a red paperclip - that's how it's done

      • Oh man, the demand for red paperclips must be pretty high at the moment.

Maybe I'll try and find myself some of Professor Copperfield's Magical Legumes.

  • +3

    Sucker born every minute.

It'll be $30 of COTD credit, spendable only in $5 allotments. Lol - just looked up an saw wang already said it.

It's an inanimate carbon rod… from Fukushima.

    • boooooo!

The smartest thing to do would be to look at the users on ozbargain who speak kindly of catchoftheday. Link their ozbargain profiles to their catchoftheday profiles. Give all the users who buy a 'mystery box' the usual junk and the ones that do post, make sure their are some GOOOOOOOD GOODIES in their box so they get decent reviews :)

    • haha lol smart

      both parties will be happy!

    • Damn, just noticed a typo and a sentence I'm not happy with. I guess I fell asleep on the information superhighway, sorry! But yeah, imagine the publicity that could be gained with a couple of well placed gifts :P

  • +1

    Giving in. Lets see!

    • +1

I did the same. Next time I'm stalking you at Coles I'll let you know what I got

  • +1

Apparently 8 people bought this, and they may well be the same 8 people mentioned in this article:

and the shipping back cost more than 4 bucks, nice money back

    • shipping back is reply paid

  • +3

I'm guessing it's toilet paper with "Crap Of The Day" written on it.

    That would be awesome.

  • +1

The last time, I got the mystery box. It was the double glass wall coffee cups. Nice
    I hope I get more…..

  • +1

Bought 3 myself… my guess is that the money back guarantee doesn't include sending the item back to them, but they'd want you to need the item. I'd say that it's high quality LED flashlights or something. Possibly 24 packs of batteries. Yes, could be toilet paper… but that's bulky. Perhaps a high quality cigarette lighter?… only some friends or family will 'need' that.

The description says: It’s not exactly a “gift”, but if you handed a few of these around, you’d definitely be in most people’s good books.

and: you’re guaranteed to find that some of your friends or family will have a need for this item

    WHAT COULD IT BE?????

Maybe 16Gb USB sticks. Not everybody needs them but we'd definitely appreciate receiving one.

    • Box of rubbers

      • +3

OHHHHHHH OHHHHHHH! If it's a box of rubbers, can I hand them out down at the local Centrelink and do my bit for Australia?

        • +1

You do realise that you'll also have to give detailed instructions on their use with every one! :o

I have the singular pleasure of driving past a local office near work at least a couple of times a day…it's kinda clear by the masses of unkempt rugrats & skanky mums that they believe the sole uses for condoms are as a water-bomb or party balloon! ;)

      • That I can use and will probably keep all 3 packages then.

Better not be a female adult toy… no my thing and I was anticipating handing one of the mystery gifts to my folks. But, yes, I can see such an item putting me in the good books for some of my friends… male and female.

    Timecop on VHS

  • my moneys on chuppa chups or mentos

    • ok..after reading the description possibly not :P

  • +1

Bought one. Hoping for a new laptop… :P
Got a gut feeling it's gonna be an LED flashlight.

    • Yeah, my gut feeling says it's a LED flashlight too… hopefully one of the ones Aldi was selling for $3.99 too that uses a Dynamo to charge the battery and also doubles as an emergency mobile phone charger… and if it is, I hope the samsung connector actually works.

I actually got a LED flashlight as a gift last year… wasn't thrilled at first but when I dropped something under my entertainment unit that night, man was I glad to have gotten the gift.

      • Anyone that gives me an led flashlight won't be popular with me, they'd get a gee thanks/WTF look lol

  • What's all this hype about LED flashlights
    Me I use this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSVNbxjdvv8&feature=player_em…

    Buyers Beware of COTD !

    !

They have been known for false advertisiing , lying and non excistent customer service

    • +3

      You left out sock-puppeting! :p

  • +1

Does COTD send out an email when the package has been dispatched?

    • +5

I don't know, but they DO send out emails when they have a pretend competition which is really just an email address harvesting scheme !

  • +2

Its a box of duracell batteries.

    • +1

how big is the box and of what type?

      • +1

Probably 24x AAs. If so, I'll have 72x AAs… I'd be good for batteries for loooong time. Gonna check my brother's PO Box again today to see if this has come in. And I was so hoping for a new LED flashlight :-(

    • Sorry the duracell batteries is just my guess. My mistake I should of said "Is it duracell batteries?"
      My apologies.

  • +1

Better not be those samsung batteries they sell. I bought a couple of those packs and they are absolute crap would not work in anything requiring even a bit of juice. Only works on clocks and that sort of stuff.

  • +2

Maybe it's a box of carbon credits ;-S

    • Will the black balloons be already inflated by Al Gore? :o

      • yep - with his own personal hot air.

You have to pop the balloons to find out what kind of hot air is inside!

        • Lol, I can hear Al now…smell that, that's manbearpig, half man, half bear, half pig…and he's super-duper serial! :)

  • Did anyone get mystery crap yet?

    • Nope and it's a mystery why. I got this from the UK in the same timeframe with at least five stops around the world!

    • Been traveling due to work but am home now… will take a peep at my bro's PO Box tomorrow morning to see if the package has finally arrived.

      • im still waiting for a grocery order, have ordered 2 sets of sheets and a cooking set that come, yet groceries with no doubt a short life, get "delayed"

        • Just checked the PO Box… nothin… I want my mystery crap!

      • In my accounts mine has not even been sent so at least another week to WA

        • I'm assuming mine is the same. Just says "Queensland Shipping ()". I suppose some more text should appear in the brackets.

        • +1

still showing just - Order Status: Payment received my other orders show- Order Status: Dispatched

so not even shipped must be seeing what they can get from the $2 shop for us !

        • Or waiting for a cheap EB used game sale.

  • When the **** will we receive these?!

    • still not dispatched ? this is the follow up message

We received payment for your order on the 30th of Mar 2011 and processing will begin shortly.

Processing can take up to 5 business days, and delivery can take up to 9 business days.

You will be notified of your courier and tracking number when your parcel is dispatched.

Please advise us if you have not received your parcel by the 16th of Apr 2011.

      • Guess I won't bother taking a walk down to the PO Box again… wish I had gotten this message.

  • Did I mention I HAVE received my MYSTERY item from this sale yesterday?

    • ANDDD!!!!!!…WHATS THE MYSTERY!!!!???DD!!!! was it worth your $4?

      • promise not to laugh.

        It is a mouse mat/pad.

But no, not just any ordinary mouse mat.

This one is a hand made, turkish woven "flying carpet" style of mouse mat.

It actually looks nice, and I will be giving mine to my parents, who I genuinely do think will appreciate it.

But there ARE going to be quite a few unhappy people with this item, me thinks.

        • +2

…so how do we get our money back! lol Hope I don't get one. They aren't worth $30

        • -1

          pmsl, are you serious!?

        • +1

Just as well, my mouse pad is curling at the ends so I can do with a new one.

I'll have to get a mouse that's in the shape of Genie from Aladdin to fit the theme… the squiggly tail on Genie would suit that of a mouse.

        • sorry..couldnt keep the promise ;)

        • This post is useless without pictures…

        • -1

You are refering to the wrong item it seems, they sent out the same thing to everyone, and it's software.

I WISH it was a mousepad.

  • Ha ha. Can we have a photo? Im actually looking forward to mine now in some strange sort of way…

  • +5

Got my mystery item yesterday, it was an Internet Security Suite 2010 OEM for Windows.
I was pretty disappointed, so I emailed COTD saying I use a Mac.
    Got my $3.99 refunded today.

    • +1

Got the same thing, really disappointed too. Just emailed COTD for a refund too.

    • +2

Hmmmm, it seems as this was sold earlier for $0.99, did COTD buy from there and try to make 300% profit on us?

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/40979

    • +1

I got the same too. Lucky you got your refund so fast. I sumitted an RMA last night and still not heard back.

    • +8

Sooo theyre selling stuff that microsoft gives away for free?

  • +5

    bastards!

    • +3

They killed Kenny as well? ;-)

  • +3

    What a load of rubbish!

  • +6

Will not try CATCH OF THE DAY OR SCOOPON any more.

  • so it's rubbish what you guys got?

  • +1

how did they give you your cash back was it store credit or back on your paypal account - what about the item do you send it back first then the credit ? — just getting ready for when mine arrives -Thanks

    • +2

Sounds like I'm going to be doing the same. I'm quite picky about what's running on my PCs ever since I used Norton Antivirus which sucked up all the resources on my old P2-350. Microsoft Security Essentials has been quite a good product… non annual licenses, does the basics of what I need in an antivirus program… and it's free!

Why do I see all the +'s for this thread turning into -'s? - lol

  • Still no package at the PO Box… but given that COTD haven't issued an email stating that the package has been sent, I'm not surprised (just hopeful to get this sorted if it is Antivirus software). Perhaps they're monitoring initial reception to the first few shipments before sending the rest out. I sure hope so… I can live with the magic carpet mouse pads from above but the antivirus software is major fail :-P

    • Fairly sure they just collated the orders then sent details to CA to have them shipped out.

  • +1

Received my Internet Security Suite 2010 OEM Friday. Thought it was illegal to sell OEM without a hardware purchase? I told myself last time I bought a 'mystery' item that it would be the last time but I didn't listen to myself <sigh>. So now I have a piece of junk which I should return but probably won't get around to doing.

    • +1

Return it on principle, not because you need the $4.

    • Theyre probably betting on most people not bothering with returning it as its only $4…

  • +1

It's CA Internet Security Suite 2010 OEM edition.

Some rubbish software they couldn't sell so they made CA a couple thousand dollars from it.

    SCAMMED.

EDIT: FYI I get this information from a friend who placed the order with another item, mine has not yet been dispatched but I asked COTD to cancel the order, we'll see where that goes.

    • +1

Thanks for the tip mate. I don't think mine has been dispatched either. Will email COTD to cancel as well. It'll save everyone time and money with sending stuff back and forth.

    • -1

Mate, just thank god, at least you didn't get a copy of norton 2002 antivirus or a B grade Bollywood movie disc or a linux 2.6.37 kernel disc!

      • I don't get what you are trying to say here… :\ (I went for sarcasm but that doesn't make sense either.)

  • +1

Ok, its been more than 12 days, and my order status is still "payment received"
I'm now voting -ve to this deal (sorry OP, nothing personal)

Probably this is the most hatered neg vote in my OzBargain life.

Time to create an anti-COTD group, Who is with me?

    • this is what i got today from them

      Hi there,

      Thank you for your patience.

I can confirm the mystery items have been dispatched, however they are being sent using standard mail - not registered post.

Because of this, your order status has not changed since the date of purchase as each order is being sent manually.

Please be on the lookout for an Australia Post envelope with your order number on the front and our information on the back. If you don't receive anything by MID NEXT WEEK , please don't hesitate to contact us so we can chase this up for you.

Again, I appreciate your patience and understanding.

      • I hope I don't get this response. I just emailed COTD asking for the order to be canceled and for my money to be refunded since I have no use for antivirus software and everyone I know uses MSE and like it.

  • You would think after all this time that people would know what to expect.

  • Just got an e-mail from COTD, they want me to return the useless Security Suite in order to issue a refund. I don't mind returning it but what are they going to do with it?

    • Save it up for the next mystery item!

    • At least it's reply paid to return, if they charged I would be even more annoyed!

      • Is it?

They asked my friend to registered post it.

        • I'm going by the reply above. Once I received an incorrect item from COTD, and they gave me a reply paid address but "recommended" that I register it as they won't take responsibility for lost mail.

  • +9

I'm very sorry guys lesson learnt I will not be posting any COTD crap from now onwards. Hope all of you get your money back.

    • +4

Nobody is blaming you, you didn't force anyone to buy, we did so out of our own stupidity :p
I was prepared to get some junky trinket and that would have been ok, but junky software? do not want!

      • +2

Right on… OP shouldn't be blaming themselves. Each and everyone one of us who bought took the risk. Was my first purchase from COTD and will likely be my last considering the crappy selection for a mystery item and long delivery wait (though, if the delivery hasn't taken place yet, I will consider it lucky).

    • +1

Not your fault, COTD abused us and I will not be dealing with them ever again.

  • +6

Umm…surprised people haven't realised it's NOT CA Internet Security Suite 2010 OEM edition…

But in actual fact, it's a very shiny expensive coaster with 'CA Internet security suite 2010' as decoration written on the front.

It hasn't got a hope in hell of protecting your computer…so it might as well protect your table
