im guessing by the lack of comments, everyone thinks this is great value, but they dont want this seen in thier collection? lol…

      I think it's more the "posted-at-2am" factor :P

      • +1

Yup, I'm a complete night owl.

        • Is your life in second gear?

  • +4

I've always had a secret man crush on Joey.

  • cheap !

  • it came to a total of $53.38 at checkout for me! lower currency exchange rate at 2am?

    • Mine worked out to be $45.57…

  • cheap for good laughs!

    • +5

      Good for cheap laughs?

  • LOL…reminds me of the Shawshank Redemption episode of Family Guy last night…

  • +1

In it's day this show was a never miss. I recently caught a re-run on Go! though, and I cringed every time they delivered a cheesy non funny line. When you compare it to something timeless like Seinfeld, it's hard to believe they were paid the amount per episode they received.

Besides my personal opinion though, if you're still into it, this seems like a decent price for that many hours viewing.

    • It was always terrible, people just didn't realise then.

  • Can it delivery to Australia? anyone have experience?

    • +3

I've had the X-Files box set delivered here which is suspect is physically larger so I can see no problem with delivery on this. In fact, they sent it via trackable courier until it hits Australia where it then enters the Australia Post system.

That set is also a pretty great price considering it's size - currently $81 delivered:

      • Thank you and just got it. seems the ship still free. and my total work out to be $47, very nice price

        • How'd you get that price? My total for one x-files box set with free shipping from amazon.co.uk works out to $81.19

        • +1

I think they meant $47 for Friends, not X-Files.

      • God I miss X-Files.

  • if you've only ever watched this on tv, definately worth it for the extended scenes which ad 2-8 minutes an ep extra in.

Still waiting for the widescreen release though.

    • +2

I don't get whats with all these 'widescreen' versions of classic shows.. You do realise that they've just blown these up and cropped off the top and bottom.. They were never filmed in widescreen, so something has to give.. .I'd rather have them the way that they were intended… 4:3

      • You mean the widescreen versions are the same as just using the zoom feature ??

surely there has to be more to it.

      • Um, Friends was actually recorded on film, meaning it can be presented in widescreen. Check out the reruns on Go. Its now presented in full 16:9. Not cropped. It was 4:3 originally as when the series aired thats all that the tv could handle.

        • +2

Some TV shows, although been shot on film, are transfered and edited on "video". So the finished master might be only on SD. If they kept the negatives they could retransfer those and re edit and redo SFX etc. But that is costly. One reason why some extras are on 480 too.

Edit: Someone has made a nice picture illustrating the differences..

        • Yeah, it's annoying. But it's not like the show is a particularly visual, high concept one. It's pretty much prat falls and dialogue/character comedy, so the video doesn't really matter all that much.

What pisses me off is the original Blu Ray edition of Full Metal Jacket. They literally just cut the top and bottom off of Full Metal freakin' Jacket. Bastards.

  • OMG, why the heck has it taken me this long to finally check out Amazon.co.uk. I just ordered some DVDs last week from the American site, and they won't be delivered til end of May. Plus I could've saved myself heaps of money, because those same DVDs on the UK site are so cheap.

    • +4

      Just cancel the US order?

      • +1

it already shipped last Friday so I can't make any changes.

        • :'(

  • +2

I love Friends. I practically grew up watching it in the 90s.

  • Good offer. Btw anyone seen the Get Smart collection for less than £44.99 anywhere? Thanks

    • +2

      It's 44GB, that's why.

    • +7

And let's face it, it's illegal. Personally, I'm more than happy to pay an affordable and fair price for a quality sitcom.

    • +1

      downloading takes ages….
But for such a good comedy series…wouldn't it be good to have it on nice presented DVD?
can watch anytime you want by just selecting a DVD and off you go on the couch.

    • +1

also, usually a quality difference (or if not, your download limit will likely suffer the side effects)

    • +1

To be fair, he does raise a good point. The purchasing of television in DVD boxsets these days is somewhat anachronistic, and he didn't exactly say "pirate it"

Sooner or later, we'll move to the US-system of Netflix/Hulu streaming, which is essentially… downloads. I wouldn't mind paying a monthly fee, and I want to GIVE them my money, but if there's no-one taking it, then I'll just torrent… Their loss.

      • If we can't download it legally here yet it then it implies the other ;-) Doesn't worry me as just like CDs the content can be transferred to hard disk (or future storage mediums) to take up less space/make it more accessible down the track.

Am really sick of the US and their content restrictions (even enforced via YouTube). They could choose to charge us or price differently if they wanted but to block access completely makes "free trade" a one way street to suit the US and companies based there. You would have thought they learnt from the music industry and iTunes.

  • They will be available in Blu-Ray soon.. 1st season already being transferred.

    I personally wouldn't bother with SD DVD's.

    • +3

I would choose Blu Ray in 99% of cases too, however they will definitely not be less than $5 a season and to be honest I don't think comedy needs to be viewed in high def. Each to their own. For example I'd upgrade X-Files and Lost to Blu Ray, but not this.

      • +1

Agree, comedy or drama is fine in SD.

Sci-fi on the other hand I'm willing to pay for HD, like BSG (the new one).

      • Also it will be Blu-ray format but still not blu-ray quality. Basically same stuff packaged in Blu-ray disc. I doubt they will digitally remaster it to upgrade the quality and any case can't be same as blu-ray quality.

    • +1

Any confirmed sources on this? I'd pay big money for the blurays!

    • Is it going to be a whole season on a single Blu-Ray disc or something? I'd buy it for the convenience.

Just.. Friends isn't something I really NEED in glorious 1080.

  • +1

Is this region 2 and 4 or just region 2?

    Cheers

  • +1

will the PS3 Oz version be able to play these?

    • I would think so

    • actually i dont think so.
      PS3s are not multi region

    • +3

I just tried a region 2 disc on both my 120GB PS3 and my Xbox 360 Slim and it did not work.

      • +3

You might have to supplant those two with a $30 DVD player ;-)

        • I think I'll have to. Anyone keen on a trade?

    • +1

Aussie PS3s will only play region 4 DVDs and Region B Blu-rays. I am so sick of region coding…

  • Have owned this for years now, but that's a good deal! I'd definitely advise for people to wait for the Blu-ray version, though, especially if it's the uncut version!

    • +1

Uncut? we will get to see emma's being conceived in HD, or Joeys full frontal nudity :)

      • That's being saved for the subsequent 3D release ;-)

  • Great deal!

  • +1

    Hey Everyone,

I bought this Friends box set years ago from Amazon US and it was region free so there is a good chance those that are asking if it will play on a PS3, the answer is yes. Also, Region 2 stuff seems to always play fine on my PS3, I think this is because the UK and AU are both PAL so often if it does say R2 it will stay play fine because we are a sister region of the UK.

Just on the BluRay discussion, they won't put a season on one disc. Higher res means higher bitrate which means more GB's needed. Kind of defeats the purpose if you want it in higher res but you want it to fit on one disc, it just wouldn't look that as good. I understand the convenience though, I cannot tell you how many original DVD box sets I have that I then downloaded the mkv rip of because i wanted it all in one folder on a portable drive that could play without sifting through warnings, production house titles and menu navigation UGGHHHH!

I hope very soon that you can simply buy BluRay quality stuff ala Itunes where they are just ready to go in a folder that can be played back and backed up at will like mp3's are now.

    • Most of my R2 DVDs do not play in my PS3. shrug

  • +2

YAY! I just got mine delivered from UPS and can confirm it DOES WORK on my PS3!

  • +1

Got mine too! Fast delivery: UK (31/3) -> Germany -> Philadelphia (US) -> Louisville (US) -> Honolulu (US) -> Melb (Clearing Agency 3/4) -> Syd -> Melb (4/4 Customer). Not sure why it went to Syd then back to Melb.

Packed fine so no damage/marks on DVD box. Very happy with Amazon UK :-)
