60,000 Bonus Points with a Citibank Platinum Visa

80

60,000 bonus Citibank rewards points on your first spend if you apply for the Citibank Platinum Visa by May 31. They advertise that this is worth $350 in gift cards or 6 one way flights.

Annual fee is $250
Complimentary travel insurance
Complimentary purchase cover
complimentary bottle of wine at certain restaurants
Concierge service

I think better than the $350 in gift cards is using 35k of those points to pay off the Platinum annual fee, leaving you with 25k left. 26.1k of points is worth a $150 prepaid mastercard.

The one negative is if you want Qantas FF points instead there's a $49 annual fee. Even with that fee you're still up $100 and change, and you have the services that come complimentary with the platinum card. I think you need to make sure to use the rewards points before you choose to earn Qantas points instead.

What do you guys think? Go easy on me, this is my first post :)

  • Qantas FF is free if you sign up from Woolies Everyday Rewards

    • I don't mean thats an annual fee to sign up for Qantas FF. It's the fee Citibank charges if you want to earn Qantas points rather than Citi rewards points.

  • How is this compared with BP citibank card?
You will get the 60000 points on the first year only right?

  • You may want to confirm if the 60k points can be transferred to QF.

    • I believe the answer is no

      • I believe (but have yet to prove) that the answer is yes, provided you opt into the QFF program before you spend on the card.

      • Yes as confirmed by Citi as long as you choose the Qantas rewards option for additional $49 annual fee.

        • seems there is inconsistency info here.
i just give them a call you cant transferred that 60k to QFF points
but you can buy a ticket from that 60k through citiflight

other forum has confirmed this.. it can not be converted to QFF

ishe - Am I seeing double or did you duplicate your post? :) I have Citi's confirmation in writing. I wouldn't rely on verbal clarifications though, it'll be the case of your word versus theirs if you do get into a dispute.

        • delfredo would love to see what you have in writing

        • Here's part of the email. Don't quote me though if you do need to rely upon it later. Would be wise to get your own personalised confirmation. :)

"To be eligible for the 60,000 bonus Reward points, you will need to
activate and make a first retail purchase on your Citibank Platinum
Card. This promotion applies to purchases, excluding cash advances,
balance transfers and other special promotions.

For your reference, these Rewards points can be transferred
automatically to your Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) account by registering
with the Citi Qantas Rewards Program. This will enable you to
automatically transfer your Rewards points to your QFF account on the
next day of your statement cycle date."

        • thats not what they told me. Have you applied for it?

        • No. I'm still undecided. Don't quite like the idea of "buying" points eventhough at a profit.

  • I did a comparison of this card versus other cards recently. While your 1st year profit is good, ongoing use after the first year is very expensive and is probably one of the worst of the rewards cards.

    • agree. $250 annual fee is wee bit too much :)

i'd almost certainly cancel after the 1st year

        • Only way to make it work.

        • just make sure you do that before the charge appears on your card, citi do not reverse this charge once it appears.

$150 profit for my details to be retained by Citibank for a lifetime supply of advertising material? Some people may think that's too much a price to pay. Good find though.

    • What details are you afraid of? Name, address, dob, job? They can get this pretty easy, if they really wanted it?

It is not like this is a loyalty card.

Would love to get this with my existing Citibank Plat… but as I'm lucky enough to have it fee free I don't think they would even consider it. That said, if anyone with an existing card is able to get this, please let us know :)

    • Get your spouse to get one, bank the points, then cancel. Very cheap way of buying points if you need to top up for something.

    • yeah would love it is existing customers can but highly doubt it lol All my rewards card are fee free :) No fee for a platinum card is awesome IMO.

  • Wished they still give the lifetime fee free platnium card offers….

Citibank's online Internet bank is one of the worst I've used. The logon and password mechanism is a burden. Nice deal but too much effort filling in all those application forms & getting hassled by Citigroup.

    • Even paying bills with BPay is hard.

  • 60000 gets you a return flight to Hong Kong (not including taxes) which is probably worth between $800 and $1000. So if you're planning a trip to HK or somewhere with a similar distance to Australia, then this could be a great deal to get your ticket at $300 (plus taxes).

    • Can you elaborate please?

      Which airline?
Under what program (Citibank or do we have to transfer points out to another FF program?)? Can we check availability first prior to getting the card (e.g. some rewards flight checking system with the relevant airline)?

  • The TV ad says in the small print that existing Citibank card members aren't eligible for the points offer. but i wonder if it means if you already have a platinum citibank card you dont qualify? If you are a citigold member you may tell them and might get it fee free but im not sure if you will get the 60k sign up points too? can any citigold members that signed up for it please confirm? btw i dont think anyone with an existing citi bank platinum card is able to get this but other citibank credit card members might be able to, please let us know :)

By my calculations you should net $145 after paying 35,000 points for annual fee.

  • I tried applying online, and there's no option for 0 dependants. How would choosing 1 affect the application as opposed to 0?

    • You count as 1 for whatever reason.

This all seems like a good deal if u kept the card for 12 months and then cancelled it.. where citibank f$CK you is after the first yr when they slug ya 250$ again..ud have to use the crap out of the car to earn enuf points to make the fee worth paying! Sorry but i have to neg. Nice try anyways (p.s. any "TV OFFER" is 99% of the time not a BARGAIN)

  • I highly doubt you'd be able to transfer the points to QFF.
Once you opt into the QFF partnership, you forfeit all your points. They WILL NOT let you transfer them.

    • Not that i disagree with you, on the contrary i believe if you have points and then choose the QFF option you forfeit your points. But what would happen if you selected QFF when you first got the card, and then did your first spend and earned the 60k. What would they do?

      • seems there is inconsistency info here.
i called Citibank and stated you cant transferred that 60k to QFF points
but you can buy a ticket from that 60k through Citiflight

other forum has confirmed this as well.. it can not be converted to QFF

    • If you want QFF points, you must opt in to QFF direct earn before you use the card. The points are allocated when you first use the card - provided you've opted in first, you get the points.

The 60,000 points are not allocated UNTIL you use the card, so opting in before you use the card means you don't lose any points.

  • Has anyone found anything decent to use their Citibank points on? I got three of the Nokia N95 phones when they had them for a great rate ( http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/8501 ) - but since then I haven't found much worth having, it all seems like overpriced ("overpointed"?) crap. There's always boring old gift cards I guess.

  • Guess who just got credited 60,000 Qantas points :)
