    Who buys points?

    • +9
      • +2

        Why do people buy points?

        • +1

          Good question..I’m curious too.

          • +6

@mastahpee: Points are worth up to 10c each for upgrading from economy to business class in some situations.

            • @idonotknowwhy: So 120,000 points are worth up to $12,000?

              • +4

@nfr: Correct. They can worth as much as $10000+ or as little as only $780 depends on how you you use it.

              • @nfr: Yes, for the right people who otherwise pay $10k for an air ticket.

            • +5

@idonotknowwhy: Goodluck finding anyone willing to pay 10c a point..

              • +6

@aragorn179: You won't. The going rate is usually between 0.9c and 1.1c. The purchaser is taking on a risk (sometimes they get blocked from spending the points if they get caught, often reward upgrades are sold out, value of points could drop at any time should Virgin/Qantas decide to devalue them, etc)

The people buying it will be getting somewhere between 3c - 10c worth of spending power out of it depending on how they use it.

Of course; if you don't want to violate the ToS, you can get around 0.5c per point for just buying gift cards, and occasionally I've seen a deal on OzBargain to get shitty over-hyped headphones for points + cash.

                • +2

@idonotknowwhy: There was a pretty good deal on RM Williams boots in the Qantas store the other week, too.

                  • @endgame: That was the normal price of RM Williams back when they weren't mass produced for the global market and bought out by that Chinese owned conglomerate.

Interesting - can you give an exmaple of how to get points at 0.5c ?

            • @idonotknowwhy: Absolutely not. Their value is no more than 2c each.

Haven't bought points but we needed about 12,000 additional points for us to get business class across to Europe on Qantas - we found a deal for buying wine that included 15,000 points. The wine was, roughly, $30 a bottle so it wasn't too bad and it was a pretty good wine. If we had bought points, legitimately, it would've cost us more and we wouldn't have got the wine. Instead of flying cattle class it will be business class. Still cost us about $600 each as well - but will be a nice experience to go business on Emirates to Europe.

There are plenty of deals that come up with waived annual fee and lower spends with similar points. No deal.

    • With Similar points

Show one example. I’ve never seen no annual fee with over 90k points unless you getting the visa / Amex packages.

        120k Qantas Points
        $0 Annual Fee
$3000 spend on each card which totals $6000

Better in every way except you have 2 cards but dont see how that matters.

        • -4

2 cards means 2 credit checks so it’s not any different than applying for 2 cards from 2 different banks.

          • +4

@Slo20: Is it worth paying $275 for one less credit check? And spend another $1500 to get the same points. Your choice, I suppose.

            • +1

@rdhupar: The points earned per dollar is also higher on this one compared to the one you linked. Personally if I’m getting 2 credit checks I would be getting better deals than the Amex packaged one.

              • +3

@Slo20: Fair enough but this also requires you to pay $275. Do the math and if its better for you then by all means. I am simply educating other users of options, I consider better.

              • +2

@Slo20: What's the big deal with an extra credit check if you don't have any credit issues? Is this anything to do with income level?

Just I don't recall the last time (if ever) I was turned down for a loan or a credit card, and I sign up for a new card pretty much every year.

                • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: 1 card a year isn’t an issue. It’s more of an issue for people that are applying for multiple cards a year as each application reduces your credit score whether you are approved or not.

          • +2

@Slo20: Agree with this. Points per credit check is more important to me.

          • @Slo20: They actually only did one for me. And it was for $0.

        • Hardly "no deal" because it's not quite as good. Apply for both, profit. Most deals have a 12 month exclusion period from when you close the card.

    • Disagree, the second highest post in the last 30 days was for an AMEX card for 80k Velocity points at $225. If you were to use/sell points this is a better deal.

      • See my post above :)

      • That one also comes with a return flight included in the $225 fee

      • +1

Trying to decide between the two now. Have some big purchases coming up in the next couple of months so thought good time to grab a credit card with bonus points. I’m leaning towards this one as would earn more points on these purchases and the extra 40000 points is worth around $400. The domestic flight might not be worth over $350 return and depending on availability may end up paying more for my partner to go on same flight compared to the best deal at the time.

        • apply for one credit card for your partner as well ;)

      • ANZ card*

  • +10

If you can't spend that much but like the card, it's 75000 points and $0 annual fee for the 1st year if you spend $2500 within the first 3 months, if you apply via the ANZ website. It's an "Internet Banking offer". I created a Progress Saver account which got approved within 2 hours. Setup my internet banking then applied whilst logged in.

Edit: This is the direct link but as stated above, it's probably safer to sign up and apply via your internet banking login. YMMV as some have said they don't need to register https://www.anz.com.au/promo/personal/credit-cards/ib-freque…

    • I've check and mine says 'Velocity' points

      • Are you looking at the ANZ Rewards Black? Which 75000 points convert to 37500 Velocity points?
The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black is specifically Qantas points.

    • +2

This is a much better deal, thanks

    • Are you sure it works? It seems that some people had trouble getting it for free. They needed to ring ANZ and discuss it

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/6239765/redir

  • I saw this one, does anyone know if they are talking about a one to one for e.g. Qantas and/or Virgin points or are Citi points something different.

    https://www.citibank.com.au/CardsOnline/platinum_rewards.htm…

    • You will receive 10,000 bonus Points when you spend a minimum of $1,000 during each monthly statement cycle. A maximum of 200,000 bonus Points can be earned over the first 20 monthly statement cycles. If you do not meet the minimum spend for one monthly statement cycle, you forfeit the bonus Points for that monthly statement cycle only, however you are still eligible for subsequent months 10,000 bonus Points if you meet the minimum spend within each monthly statement cycle during the promotional period.

If you churn and burn cards this is not the ideal card.
To directly earn Qantas points through the Citi Qantas Rewards program, costing $49 per year, and with a monthly sweep of your points into your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. Citi rewards points transfer out to Velocity Frequent Flyer at a rate of 2 Citi Rewards points to 1 Velocity point

      • I'm, certainly, likely to be able to do the $1000 spend a month. As far as I can see the cost would be $49 for first year and $74.50 for next year if you have $24,000 on the card over the first year. Not too bad, given the number of points on offer. Particularly if Qantas is one to one on the points allocation.

        • +1

Can't say I know this offer as it doesn't fit my criteria. I can't be sure that this offer is for Qantas points as it specifically says "Citi Rewards Platinum Credit Card" which is Citi's reward scheme. If there was a Qantas in there then you'll be getting Qantas points. And you can't transfer Citi points to Qantas, either. (From my current knowledge)

    • It's not Qantas

    • To opt into Citi Qantas Rewards, you need either the Signature or Prestige cards. This offer relates to the Platinum card so you'll only earn Citi points. $1 generally equals 1 Citibank point = 0.4 Velocity points. So 200k Citi points equals 80k velocity points, or 4000 per month. While this isn't bad, and the spend rate per month isn't too high, the length of time the promotion runs over is too long for me. Also trying to fit other credit card promotions in over the next 20 months isn't worth the hassle. Also throw in the fact that there is an annual fee at all, it's not worth it imo.

      • +1

Thanks for the clarification. As I said, the Citibank site was a tad confusing for me. I tend to agree with your assessment here.

  • Two Qantas Club lounge access passes per year. Electronic passes, legally & easily transferable. Value at least $60.
1 QFF point per $1 spend.
"Ensure if applying for an offer, you don’t currently hold and haven’t opened or closed an ANZ Frequent Flyer Black, ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum, ANZ Frequent Flyer Gold or an ANZ Frequent Flyer credit card in the last 12 months"

    • +1

I think it's against Qantas rules to sell passes

      • These can be easily and legally transferred online to others. You just need their QFF account number and go to Qantas web site. So these CAN legally be 'gifted'! Value $60 plus

        • It would be worth it for their International lounges, but the Domestic at Sydney is a rathole and Melbourne wont let you in with a pass due to remodeling.

  • the required spend is nuts though. 2500 across those 3 months!

    • It doesn't have to be spread over 3 months. Just as long as you do it within 3 months. All your Christmas spending within a week should cover it, right?

      • i've never bought christmas gifts for anyone sadly (not)

      • It's not 2500 over 3 months… it's 7500 over 3 months. Quite a lot unless you're travelling domestically.

        • yeah sorry typo'd. was meant to say 2500 per month

        • So is it ok if I spend like this
          Month 1: $5500
          Month 2: $2000
          Month 3: $0

    • +1

It's not really that nuts as it's $7500 over 3 months.
What is nuts is virgin high flyer, which is $3000 per month, for 3 straight months.

      • More nuts they rejected me :-<

    • +1

Yeah, $7,500 is more than I spend (and I'm quite wasteful / impulsive).
You can get some of it by pre-paying utility bills Power/Gas, Phone/Internet, Private health cover, Insurances. I haven't read the terms, but you could probably buy gift cards as well (read the terms first).

I've been known to pay other people's bills for them (with them paying me back of course) too.

  • That is alot of gift cards lol

  • For me I prefer to look at the points per credit check and don’t mind paying a bit more for the annual fee if it means I need less cards/credit checks. So this is pretty good

As for the high min spend just transfer what you haven’t spent to family on PayPal and cop the 3% card fee. Worst case scenario for this card if you spend $0 in 3 months would be another $225 in PayPal card fees. $450 for 120k qantas points still still a good deal. Could also consider just buying a heap of woolies e gift cards at the end of the 3 month period to make up the difference.

    • As for the high min spend just transfer what you haven’t spent to family on PayPal and cop the 3% card fee.

Can you clarify what you meant by that? Do PayPal transfer not count towards cash advance?

    • Fyi stripe is a bit cheaper it you plan on doing this. 1.9% + 20c per transaction

  • +3

Low and slow uptick on the + votes means that most OzBargainers favour 0 annual fee, even if it means less bonus points. Unless there's a free domestic flight attached :)

    • Not really.
The "Uncapped earn" rate is a bit misleading though, it's 1 pt/$1 up until $7500 in one statement period, then 0.5 pt/$1 after

      • You say "not really" but fail to justify it. I'm not talking about any one person's opinion, just overall sentiment.

      • +2

        $7500 in one statement period

For some of us plebs, that's virtually uncapped :)

    • +1

It could also be related to the high spend requirement not being suitable for most. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/403728 seemed popular enough without $0 annual fee.

      • That's why I said the last bit about a domestic flight. If I didn't already have the ANZ Travel Rewards, I'd be all over that deal.

  • $7500 in three months lol.

  • Can waive the annual fee (no cash back) if you apply through the ANZ app (have to just have a current account I.e. savings, already opened).

  • Any recommendation on Visa/MC with sign-up point bonus, free foreign transaction and QFF point on ATO payments ?

    • +1

One card for all that? Doesn't exist.
Can be done in 2 cards.

      • can you still get ATO payment points?

      • +1

ideally, yes, in one card. BankWest World one looks like the one, but there is no signup bonus at the moment.

        • Yep. You can have any 2 of the above in a single card, but all 3 doesn't exist. It's why I always say to consider the churning/sign ups seperate from the "keeper" cards (if you have enough spend to maintain both).

  • There was recently an ANZ platinum card that would give you 75k QFF points after spending on one transaction such as a cup of coffee. That was a good one. This is a high spend requirement. Probably only useful if you have some big appliance spending coming up soon.

  • You freaked me out for half a second because I just got approved for the 75k black card (no annual fee). $2.5k spend per month is a bit much though, so I wouldn't have gone for this regardless.

I'm also waiting for my Bendigo bank card in the mail. These two combined = 155k QFF points after $5k spend in first 3 months, $149 in annual fees.

    • Could get the qantas premier card for another 40k points and no annual fee too

      • 🙋‍♂️

      • Been there, done that. Can't apply again until April 2019.

  • -5

Points are like playing roulette. Everyone has a system but for the vast majority you end up worse off. That's why they created points in the first place. But everyone figures they got the winning system.

Just grab a no annual fee card and pay it off each month. You'll be amazed how relaxing it is to just make purchases for things toy decide you want instead of getting endless pokes and prods to by a toaster, fly to Qld or spend $7500 just to hit your signed target

    • lol learn how to point hack. Paid $140 in taxes for first class flights from syd to London return on Etihad without once paying an annual fee or interest

      • You can book etihad with qantas points?

        • No. They may have used Virgin points though.

          • @cynicor: Highly doubt it's $140 in taxes return first class.. Think he's exaggerating a little bit lol

    • +2

This sort of attitude is important. It keeps the points seats for the rest of us!

      • +1

And it lets me sell you points!

        Everyone wins.

  • This is a bloody brilliant deal. Despite the high spend, this is a massive amount of points and is only a benefit as the hit to your credit score from applying to 1 card is greatly reduced compared to the usual 2 needed to get this point amount.

    Cheers OP!!!
