The ATO is reminding the public to be alert to scammers impersonating the ATO demanding iTunes gift cards as a form of tax debt payment.

Assistant Commissioner Janine Clark said that based on recent reports made to the ATO, iTunes gift cards were part of new tactic being used by fraudsters.

“In April 2016, of the 8692 phone scam reports we received were in relation to the fake ATO tax debt scam; 58 reports mentioned the scammer demanding payment by iTunes and 26 people unfortunately paid $174,830 to fraudsters,” Ms Clark said.

        • And this is why we have limits now.

          idiots!!

    • Boooooooorrrrrrrrrrinnnggg. Move on.

Yay 20% off Netflix, Spotify… and vbucks :D

    • +1

I’ve read that Netflix are looking to cease subscription via iTunes. I hope not but something to be aware of before you buy gift cards in bulk…

      • Yeah but I can stack my subscriptions so can buy in bulk and use in bulk :)

        • +1

Can you explain? I thought you can only pay for Netflix monthly? Thanks

        • @AB7: Unless they have recently changed it, you can keep buying the in app purchases and it will stack (up to a certain point)?

        • @pennypincher98:
Can’t see any option for this in the app or under my iTunes subscription options, can only do 1 month at a time?

      • one article i read said they would continue for current subscribers but will not allow these types of transactions for new subs…can anybody confirm?

        • That's what I read as well. Also, that Netflix is "trialling" this on a limited basis with some users. In other words, if not enough people complain, then disallowing iTunes subscriptions will become their new policy going forward.

      • Is that really true Netflix will cease subscription via iTunes? I am currently subscribed via Google Play credit, if iTunes is not accepted, no point buying these gift cards for me now.

    • I didn't think Spotify allows for subscription via iTunes? I tried to in the past…

      • +1

They used to offer it. If you signed up while they did then you can still renew your subscription that way, but if you cancel the renewal for any reason, you can't go back to paying that way later on, only directly to Spotify.

    • +1

Worth noting Spotify actually charge more when doing it via in-app purchases, to cover the 30% they need to pass back to Apple.

      • I thought one of the T&Cs with Apple was that you can't charge more for IAPs than what you do anywhere else for the same thing.

    • Spotify - how do you do it? I tried to sign up via spotify app and no go.

Time to hit up Officeworks price match and get my ATO debt paid wew

    • At work while ago a old man bought $10,000 worth of itunes cards. I tried to stop him even got the store manager to talk to him. He just kept on saying it's for personal use why does it matter to us which was true. So he ended up buying them.

      • +3

        I bet he paid in unmarked, non-sequencial $20, $50 and $100 bills.

        • +1

He did pay everything in $50 bills

        • +5

@ldn0607: He would then turn around and sell those at the same price or further discounted through his online stores and get paid into his paypal or bank. Pay some sales fee and income tax, maybe get $8-9000 back cleaned.

      • He must have a large tax bill from the ATO

        • It's more likely he's a target of an online scam. 😉

    • now works with Grey Import Debts as well!

    • hope he was not under the impression that it is apple store gift card :(

  • -1

Excellent 20% discount on my payment to the ATO!

    • -1

      Yeah… 20% off my ATO debt…

    • -3

      Boooooooorrrrrrrrrrinnnggg. Move on.

  • +1

Can someone explain how this relates to a 20% discount to the ATO?

    • +10

It's a joke. A while ago scammers were calling people and telling them they needed to pay their ATO debt with iTunes gift cards.
      Here: https://www.ato.gov.au/Media-centre/Media-releases/Don-t-get…

      • +8

Someone need to stop this joke. Or at least say (joke) at the end of their post.

I seriously thought about buying shitload of iTunes cards to pay ATO.

        Wtf

        • +4

A fool and their money are soon parted. Always do your due diligence when buying something.

        • I seriously thought about buying shitload of iTunes cards to pay ATO.

          Facepalm.png

        • @PainToad:
          MakeItRain.gif

    • The Australian Federal Reserve is working with Apple Inc to create a new form of digital currency to undermine the wide spread use of unregulated Cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. By adopting Apple's digital currency starting with the ATO, the government will have more control over this than crypto which may fundamentally distrupt the economy.

      it's just a scam.

    • +1

While it's a joke here, it's actually quite a well-known scam to the point where the cards now say they can't be used to pay ATO debts

    • +1

There is a notice on every checkout at my local Coles stores reminding shoppers that the ATO will never ask for iTunes cards.

  • Can we still use e-gift card to buy itune card at coles ? I know some woolies is allowed

  • Is 20% the max discount for iTunes gift card?

    • +1

Highest I've seen in recent months.
Plus with 5% off Coles Group GC (via Good Guys Concierge), I am gonna snap up a few.

      • Thanks a lot

      • I could not find information around Coles GC via Good Guys Concierge. Is it a e-gift card or physical card? Do you have the link please? Thanks

    • -4

Yes, that will also be 20% off my ATO debt…

  • +9

Awesome to see another 20%, hasn’t been one in a long time! For those that got the Amex Vogue deal, you can get a $50 iTunes GC from Myer @ 40% off ($20 statement credit).

    • Ask Myer to match this deal on Wednesday and then pay using your Amex, increasing your discount or getting something extra for free :)

      • Its a nice idea, but I'd just save on the hassle of getting them to price-match, and just buy Coles Myer GC's and then (as per comment below still allowed) use these Coles Myer GC's to buy the iTunes GC's at Coles at a further 20% discount. Whatever's left over you can still buy your everyday groceries. With my poor maths that would be 52% off the iTunes GC's, must be on of the best deals ever :-)

    • Thanks that's a great tip. But wouldn't you have to add something else to the order - a $50 iTunes card is only going to cost $40. So buy the $100 card for $80 - and get $20 back…. That would be sweet.

    • Thanks mate worked a treat

  • +1

Ozbargain meetup @ Officeworks at 7am Wednesday to get 24% off via price beat before they match Coles’ price anyone? Haha

    • +1

This is not an apple gift card promo, you can only get 20% off the Apple iTunes Store, not Apple Store.

        • -5

Use it pay ATO for 20% off your tax…

    • +1

Just a friendly tip, you don’t need to repeat your question when you already asked it above.

      • -1

Just a friendly tip, you don’t need to repeat your question when you already asked it above.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Been waiting a long time for the 20% off to come around again.

  • Does Coles still allow you to pay for iTunes gift cards with Coles gift cards?

  • +1

Is 20% historically has always been the max amount of discount?

    • +3

From my experience, I have not seen a deal above 20% off for years. I believe Hardly Normal used to rare one off discounts above 20%.

      • I see. I'm gonna get some then

    • +1

      There was 31.7%, 25%, 25%, 25% off, BOGOF and Free, … , a couple of year back.

  • +1

I have often wondered, can iTunes cards be purchased online then used immediately?

  • Where are the 50% off itunes cards at? Miss those days :(

  • is this the max 20% that people have seen?

    • coles had 50% off once when you spend over $100 on groceries back in 2010. I think thats the best ever but this is second best.

  • -1

    20% off my ATO debt…

    Thanks!
Might get some more for Apple Music & Cloud payments

  • I stocked up on 7 x $30 at Officeworks.
Used gift card to pay to save even more.
