Might wanna put Vic in the title for clarity's sake.

  • What is the usual cost?

    • +1

      $56 ?

      • Saw an ad on TV last night saying that it was $139…

EDIT: Yeh, site says $139 regular price. I'd pick it up if it wasn't limited to Kew/Balwyn.

I'd pick it up if the Kew Midas didn't do such a terrible job servicing my car last time.

    • What happened? I would really like to know. I just got a new car (well, second hand, but it's new to me), so I'm very protective of it. And it's due for a logbook service…

      • +3

Had a log book service done, they overflowed the oil to dangerous levels, screwed my wheel alignment and didn't seem to actually check anything. Car still sounded like something was wrong. Took it to Mitsubishi a few months later who found the engine mounts were stuffed and the muffler was cracked.
        Car sounded like new again.
Gonna give the local place in Surrey hill shopping strip a go, heard some good reports.

"Gonna give the local place in Surrey hill shopping strip a go, heard some good reports."
Family has been going there for years and years and years, excellent stuff.

Franchise stores are terrible, they follow a list and don't look any further….
Taking your car to Toyota, Ford, Holden, Land Rover etc etc service centers is also bad - they charge an arm and a leg for doing basic servicing.

Word of mouth is your best bet - I know a better garage in the Kew, Balwyn area where I take my car.

      • Agreed, ask around & find a good local real mechanic IMHO! :)

dunno about using a coupon for car service, they could easily say something needs 'replacing' and get their money back there. also i thought they are more known for muffler/exhaust work? but if someone has had good experience with the balwyn one i'm willing to give it a shot for $55!

    • they could easily say something needs ‘replacing’ and get their money back there

Yup, IME that's what these franchise places always try to do with coupon customers! :(

      • +1

just don't tell them until they tell you the total price?

        • I haven't tried a coupon service in many, many years so I can't remember if they stipulate that you have to tell them up front, but otherwise, yeah that might help! :)

Never take your car to Midas Balwyn, had a horrible experience there.

They give a cheap car service, but during the service they will tell you that you need to fix this and that, and each fix is jacked up in prices (double the cost of elsewhere). I know because they did that to me. I politely declined, telling them I just want the service. They weren't happy about it. Didn't even finish the service properly when they realised I wasn't paying a single cent more - refused to fill out the checklist of things to check in the service. Then when I took my car to another place to service after 3 months, they told me none of those things Midas Balwyn wanted to fix needed to be done.

Midas Balwyn is a rip-off and is dishonest.

      • refused to fill out the checklist of things to check in the service.

I'd refuse to pay if they did that to me…

      • +1

They just brushed it off saying it didn't mean anything since they check everything anyway (yeah right), but they had my car keys unless I paid, what was I to do?

Don't put yourself in the same situation as I did.

      • +1

        agreed

  • +1

looks like some Midas employees don't really love our cars like in the ad, you know, where the guys are fawning all over the car instead of the attractive girlie…

  • Anyone had any experience with Kmart Service Centre? I'm thinking of taking mt car there in Newmarket.

    • Kmart was ok like 20+ years ago when the service dept was an actual dept of the store. Now AFAIK they're all contractors/franchisees & whilst some are better than others, the imperative is just to make money. Just ask around your local area for a good mechanic. ;)

  • ok generally for simple stuff like oil changes, but choose wisely!
i once went to a kmart in a major shopping center, the mechanic was only a kid like 19 at most, took off a wheel to get a quote for brake pads, got quote, drove home, next day i noticed a wheel nut was loose! :O

  • So one person is reporting that Midas in Kew is doing a terrible job and another is saying that Midas in Balwyn is doing a bad job, then this deal doesn't seem like a go, hey?

  • I don't really trust these discount things. They just want you there then charge you other things
