I got the last two of these last year when they were on clearance, they are ok, make sure you tighten up the hose clamps before applying any decent pressure from a pump or you'll get hosed, found that out the hard way! Nozzles adjust and shut off pretty good but running from house water supply is pretty useless unless you're just getting these to water the garden. They have faded pretty good in the sun so unsure just how UV resistant they actually are.

    • but running from house water supply is pretty useless unless you're just getting these to water the garden.

      Why?

      • I think he's trying to say that it would be useless to run house water through them unless you point the other end at your garden 🤷‍♂️

      • because it's a 19mm diameter hose and domestic pressure isn't enough to shoot water more than 5-10m depending on your water pressure. connect this to my fire pump and it water goes 30m+

It all depends on what infrastructure you have in place. I have 32mm poly running from the meter to the house and I have my irrigation system running from that and a takeoff which works perfectly with one of these hoses. It's not just pressure that affects the house but the amount of flow.

        • Are domestic fire pumps and fire hoses a thing? Is it specific to one region or nation wide?

          You're kidding?

My house doesn't have one, I didn't know anyone bought these things for their house. If it's part of a new building standard I have no way of knowing, OzBargain is my source of knowledge these days.

Not everyone lives in the city! And even if you live close to the city these can be useful. There is no requirement to have these products but if you want to stay alive when they were is a bushfire or actually put out a house fire without waiting ages for the fire fighters to arrive or the many other uses that these products offer you.

        • @Maverick-au:
Cool thanks for explaining it. Yeah I'd never heard of it, and I haven't lived outside the city.

      • Usually a pressure valve limits house water pressure to 40-50PSI.

I don't see why a tap couldn't be installed before the pressure limiter (right after metre), but you'd need a plumber to do this.

Edit: Legislation states water pressure inside a building can't be more than 500kPa (~70PSI) for Victoria. It states the limiting valve can be anywhere along the inlet line, as long as water is kept below this level inside the building. In other words, the above idea (of a high pressure tap outside) would be legal.

Maybe in your state but other states don't generally use these.

Do I just throw this hose into the fire?

    • +8

      No silly.

You connect it to an lpg tank and light it it on the other side. Truly becomes a fire hose.

  • These Hose just keep going down!

  • All sold out at my local Bunnings. Anyone know anywhere else I can find cheap hose?

      None at Bunnings Inglewood.

  • Is there any benefit over a 'normal' hose given taps pressures in a residential home does not exceed 50-60 psi?

    • +3

People interested in this would usually live at a rural property and use pumped water for fire fighting.

  • Industrial grade Hoses coming out of China are not UV stabilized or Ozone resistant (which is a bigger reason for failure). Most of them don't even meet the pressure ratings printed on them (which are low, to begin with) and have week spots in them (thickness is not consistent throughout the hose, many have air bubbles in the pvc jacket that forms stress points). You won't find this out until 2-3 years down the line or worst in an emergency situation. Best of luck getting a refund them when that happens as they will simply point to the pressure rating printed on the hose.
