  • Does the usual terms of not having an AMEX card within 12 months apply to this?

If not, I have this card. So could just cance and reapply?

    • I thought it was 18 months, but I have the same question. Can't actually get through to the offer due to a redirect loop.

      • It's 18 months for existing Amex-amex issued card holders but no such restriction for bank-issued cardholders

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Previous and existing bank-issued American Express companion cardholders are eligible for this offer (cards issued by: Australia New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation).

        • Don't forget those who have their 18 month period coming up, after watching closely in their tracking spreadsheets :)

    • Yes, 18 months restriction hidden in their T&Cs

Great deal on the St George Amplify Signature at $139 (usually $279) with 90k Qantas Points
    https://www.finder.com.au/st-george-amplify-signature-credit…

    • Good card to have when you can't use an AMEX - for one year at least…
Although I would opt for the Amplify points, not QFF. Depends who you want to fly with.

      • Get Qantas first for the bonus and switch to amplify for ongoing spend.

        • You get 90k either way, you can choose amplify or qantas.

        • @bohn: Yes but 90k Qantas is 90k Qantas, whereas 90k Amplify converts to 45k Velocity/KrisFlyer

edit: Didn't realise you were actually answered already

        • @illumination:

Yep, I guess I could get QFF and try and sell them.
          I mainly fly SQ.

        • @bohn: I mean whilst I agree 1 KrisFlyer > 1 QFF, I'm not sure 1 QFF > 0.5 KrisFlyer which is why we're recommending one opt for the QFF bonus first lol

          @illumination:

          yeah :)

Amplify points convert at 2:1 rate.. so you end up with only 45,000 points with Virgin/SQ, etc

Highest bonus I've seen for the Platinum Edge. Can't not pos this..

Still a great card, despite the Explorer's existence. Second best after the Explorer!

    • Which explorer you talking about ?

Care to elaborate please? I'm in the market for a new Amex card.

      • This Explorer

It's a better card overall with a better average earn rate and lounge access, but the Plat Edge is still a great card to have.

    Can't transfer to QANTAS points

    • +1

+1 to this, you cannot transfer out to Qantas points, but they have 9 partners that you can including Virgin Aus.

      • -3

qantas is not particularly useful anyway. I have some myself :/

  • I'm about to spend a boat load on a europe trip, and want to get a credit card that will give me points / and or travel credit, is this the best card or is there others i should consider?

    • +1

If you can utilise the $450 Qantas travel voucher and want Qantas Points - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/358371

      100k bonus points,
      high earn rate
      Insurance

    • Consider the Explorer if it's still doing the 100k point bonus and you're not a qantas loyalist (the points will transfer to many airlines at 4:3).

    • are you spending in AUD or foreign currency? If you need one to go on travel with then use a foreign exchange fee free card eg. 28 degrees, bankwest zero platinum (both are no annual fee).

Yes no rewards but the 2-3.5% savings you make are usually much greater than the value of frequent flyer points

Plat Edge is a great secondary card to hold (3:1 on supermarket spend including when you buy gift cards at -5% through cashrewards), but its signup bonuses are pretty weak. I would pick it up if you have done a big amex (explorer, velocity plat, or qantas ultimate) and do not plan to churn amex cards.

  • Tempted - i got the amex explorer recently and am now looking for a card for my wife - was planning on getting another explorer (referrer fee for me and 100k for her). How does this compare? Which one actually accrues more points?

    • i think if you can afford it, and use the bigger travel credit. The Explorer definitely has a higher earn rate and double the bonus.

    • is she going to keep it more than a year?
because you can only transfer 50k points per year from one person to another (unless you plan to transfer direct to an airline in the immediate future).

      • Yeah, that was the tricky part…

      • How does it work when cancelling the card, I assume you keep your points? Could she sign up, pay for the 1 year. Transfer 50k to me. Then cancel the card and transfer me 50k after that..?

        • to transfer the next 50k she needs to pay the next year's annual fee.
also just check re transferring gateway to ascent and vice versa.

        • @bohn:
how about if she transfers within the first year to an annual year fee free card instead? Sorry, havent had amex points before so dont know if they are linked to a card or an account….cheers

      • Why not move the points to an airline FF program that you know you'll use just before closing it?

        • Just to clarify though….do you lose all your points if you dont transfer to another airline?

        • @cjb: I don't know, I haven't looked into that.

  • Are you ineligible for this offer even if you're currently just a companion card holder?

  • Hi All, does anyone know if you can refer this offer to a interested friend and i am able to receive the referral bonus? Cheers

    • +1

No because it is an exclusive offer by finder hence no referral bonus.

      • Bugger @nightelves. Thx
