It's basically a repeat of this deal but with a ~$800 phone included as well (on 24 months instead of 12 month term).

Compared to this $49/month JB BYO deal, you are paying an extra $240 over the 24 months and giving up $200 JB gift card & 5GB of data; however you are getting a $600-$900ish phone included instead.

If you value the Galaxy S8 at $800 (I think the cheapest deal we saw was $799 for Bing Lee) then you are paying $640 over 24 months for the 15GB contract = $26.66/month which seems like a great deal on the Telstra network and also no upfront cost required. That's probably the best value there since the Pixel XL and iPhone 6s are older models but they are options for Apple users or someone not wanting to go down the Samsung path.

  • Got my phone yesterday, didn't get any shipping information just rocked up. Put the sim in etc and still hasn't been activated 24 hours later. Spoke to Telstra chat last night and they said it is "pending" and will be done within 4 hours lol (so should of been done by 11:45pm last night). Hopefully it'll get ported today sometime…

    • they stuffed up my order as well, sent me the phone and later got an email saying order is cancelled. Called them and they said they didn't process the order for that plan…

    So essentially steps are:

    If Telstra # - port to $2 3rd party Sim, else:

    1. Go to JBHifi, sign up for $49/month deal with Telstra, obtain $200 Giftcard.

    2. Later at home once JBHifi plan active, Launch Cashrewards or Pricepal

    4. Wait for chatpop to claim 5GB extra data, or $10 discount

    5. Choose phone of choice and transfer the JBHifi contract onto the new family and friends contract?

  • Tried to get the $10 loyalty discount and the rep claims they don't physically have the tool available to apply the discount as this deal provides the phone for free. Unsure how others are managing this so easily?

    • They didn't, the guy said it was a mistake.
      Best you're going to get is to sign up to the JB HI FI $49 plan then "upgrade" to the F+F $59 plan (this deal) and make sure you sign up via cashrewards.
      Essentially netting you a $200 JB HI FI Card, $105 back via Cashrewards, a Samsung Galaxy S8 and 20GB of Data with unlimited calls/texts for 24 months for $1416. Personally didn't do the JB HI FI card as I didn't want the S8 to sell out and I was somewhat skeptical of the ETC's (early termination charges) even though others say they don't apply since you're staying with Telstra and merely upgrading.

      • I ended up chatting to retentions and they offered me $19 off my home phone/cable bundle which I was happy with :) Ends up much of a muchness for me now, which is great.

    those that got the cashrewards $105 as tracked in their account, was that only after you got a tracking number from telstra? yet to see anything in my cashrewards account yet but telstra is in my click history

    • Same, seems that once you select 'BUY NOW' then you have to reopen cashrewards and paste the ordering web to claim this successfully (My mate did this way and got confirmation straightaway). We got to contact TA after 7 days I believe

    I just signed up to Pricepal to get this plan with the S8 with the aim of selling it. Got an email immediately saying " Birthday Bonus - 48 Hours Only! For every $2 in cashback you earn we'll add an extra $1 as a bonus! But hurry its for 48 hours only." So instead of 150 i'll get 225 back.

    Not my birthday for another month but I won't complain. Got the $200 voucher from JB last week. Cheering!

          @Ozabc: Telstra realised they screwed up and sent me a return envelop, so just I didn't pick up the delivery so it will just be returned to the warehouse.

    • I called them to advise I'd received a 2nd phone by mistake and they sent a courier round with a return bag but all the documentation talks about is a modem lol. Plus when I called to advise them of 2nd phone the woman spend 15mins trying to sell me tablets, more phone plans for my kids or hubby grrrr.

  • I received my s8 today, activiated the sim and the bonus 5gb had not been applied. Tried chat again who added 5gb and $10 discount as the agent when I ordered it said yes to a discount then took it back. Agent applied it as it had been promised, fingers crossed they keep it. :)

    After signing up My Account and the 25/7 app now shows:

    Plan early termination charge $708.00
    Device buy out $1176.00

    Your cost (excluding $8 mobile number portability option) to disconnect today is $1884.00

    Device buy out should be $708 as Total Minimum Cost in the CIS is $1418.

    My device was a Samsung S8. I'd suggest you check your account after the service has been activated. I'm on livechat about it now.

      So $49 is deducted each month against the device buy out balance.

      The previous F&F offer in May didn't have the device buy out original amount this high hence I was surprised at the amount. They set it at "market value".

      • I have the same payout figures as you… just wondering how the total disconnection cost is calculated to be greater than the plan cost over 24 months (i.e. 24*$59? ($1,416))?

        Did the Telstra rep have any explanation / fix it up?

        • The total minimum cost is if you fulfill the contract.

          The CIS states there may be additional costs for the device repayment.

          If you had to bail, you'd pay out the 24x$59, but I'm unsure if you can port out until the contract finishes (without having to pay the additional service repayment).

  • I can confirm that you can get the 5gb bonus retroactively via chat. My order went through then i asked them a day later. i am a multiple telstra product customer.

  • Just sharing my experience.

    I went to JB and ported in my number and got the $200 JB gift card
    I went to chat with Telstra to inquire/confirm that there is no ETC and the rep said there would be no charge to switch.
    He told me he will add the 5GB/month without me having to ask.
    I activated the cashreward and went through the order but I got a sorry orderfailed page at the end. The agent did warn me though not to take long on one page as it will timeout.

    I re-did the order and the cashrewards was still saying active.

    I completed the order and gave the chat agent my order number to process the extra 5GB

    The only thing I am worried about is that I had not received the email from cashrewards saying it's tracked. It could just take more time?

    I hope it will be, otherwise I think I can raise it up with them to look into it.

    I was skeptical about pricepal as I could not see any indication whether it is tracking it or not through the extension (unlike cashrewards which shows you it's green)

      I have 35Gb of data - there was a stuff up with the 5Gb bonus for each service so the chat agent added another 5Gb

    Just an update, I activated a vodaphone $2 sim at 9am this morning from Telstra prepaid. Went into JB told them I'd like to switch to Telstra $49 20gb 1 year contract $200 JB hi-fi gift card. the bloke was really helpful. I had no dramas at all… telstra Sim activated in about 5mins? I Got home applied for the family and friends offer with the S8 2 year contract 15gb +5gb bonus $59 a month. Tried doing the cash back with pricepal no idea if it's worked as I had no confirmation. But the order went through gave the Telstra rep the order number he's processed the extra 5gb.. happy days cheers OP AND OZBARGAIN !

    So just to clarify. To upgrade from the JB Hi-Fi plan to this, do you use live chat? Then go ahead with the order and let the staff know the order number and they'll process it?

      If you're not fussed about cash rewards go into a Telstra store and switch so you get the phone on the spot

      Yeah I downloaded Pricepal as a web browser extension followed the steps, went through Pricepal website searched Telstra mobile. Page loaded waited for chat to pop up , asked the Telstra operator about the Christmas family and friends deal, clarified I won't be charged anything upgrading from the plan I was on. Mentioned the 5gb bonus data pop up they said stay in the chat whilst you process the order. Then give them the order number once orders gone through etc.

      PS. I'm still unsure if the Pricepal even worked because I've had no confirmation, so might be easier to just go to a Telstra store and sign up don't forget about the extra 5gb though :)

          I've contacted Pricepal yesterday about the situation. unsure if order was even tracked as i had no notification showing up or anything. They wanted a copy of my invoice from the Telstra 2 year phone plan order, which I've now sent through this morning and i'm currently waiting on a reply.

        • @keongyip: hey, so i recieved my phone after 2 days. Activated the sim card realised i was missing the bonus 5gb data spoke to chat had to get them to add it into my account.. there was abit of hesitation at first but it's all sorted now.

          Haven't had a reply back from pricepal yet. It's looking highly unlikely that the tracking worked for cash back anyway. The S8 is great phone just trying to get used to it….now to find a case for it ! lol.

          @humanpudding: Thanks! The first lady on the chat today was NOT going to have a bar of it and flat out refused to give me anything. All this despite having an interaction ID confirming that I was getting the 5GB and a $10/month credit. Eventually her team lead called me, put me on to someone in billing who then honoured it. I think the whole process probably took a good 3 hours on chats and phone calls on Thursday and today, but it was worth it and I'd do it again!

          Agreed - the S8 is pretty amazing but it needs a case! Also doesn't seem to feel as solid as the S7.

          Keep us posted on Pricepal. I still can't see anything under my activity which is annoying. But that's the last cog in the wheel to make this the best thing I've done this month :P

          @humanpudding: Same here - those PricePal guys are really slow and not giving any indication if they have or not tracking. Their website says "wait 7 days". Well Cashrewards giving feedback on the spot. PricePal should do better otherwise they will not have customers even at $300 cashback.
          Personally for me it will be Cash rewards from now on.

    Had 6 months to run on an old S7 Telstra plan for $105/month
    Paid out the contract for about $300~
    Sold the S7 to fund the payout.
    So now I'm paying $50/month less with a newer phone and only extended by 18 months.
    Also I now get 15gb of data instead of 5gb (plus working on the bonus 5gb atm)

      what I did is click telstra link from pricepal and go to F&F link from this deal on the same browser page.
      not sure if it will be recorded or not. no email confirmation for over 24hours already.

      you can wait for live chat to pop up and ask for extra 5GB. quite easy for most rep.
      they will ask you to finish online order and give them the order no.

    Are people doing this after they sign up?

    I'm trying to get them to agree before signing up - same thing every time is that 'we need more than 1 device attached to the billing account to do this'.

    • I think you mean 5GB data bonus.
      I did it before submit the order online but someone mentions that it can be done retrospectively as well.

      just try another rep in case they let you down. I find it is relatively easy to get it.

  • I asked for 5GB when I activated and the chat agent said I'd get it, but it wasn't actually applied. Chatted again tonight and they added it straight away. So no problems applying it a few days into my contract.

  • I'm seeing charges for calls in the my telstra app. Previously thay didn't include unlimited calls in the recent changes section it was always $0. Has telstra mucked up?

      I switched to Telstra on 21st through JB's offer to get the gift card
      A day later I signed up to F&F and noticed $15 charge for a total of 3 calls.

      I asked agent in chat as a side note and he said not to worry about it as they will do pro-rata charges and the max is what the plan value is

  • I signed up three in our family plan, we were all on the 12GB $59 reduced to $49, 12mth deal. Three S8's arrived. I am impressed with the 20GB per plan as we pool family data. With 60GB hopefully we won't go over again. In store and online asked for my Telstra family and friends "connection" and how I heard of the deal. Luckily for me my brother works there.

    The first Chat lady refused the 5Gb and said nothing could be done. I disconnected and reconnected straight away and the next agent said no worries. I did the online order, supplied him/her with the order number and he/she promised to apply the 5GB bonus. That didn't happen so the next day engage with chat again and supply the transcript from the previous day and 5GB now applied for all three plans.

    There is something wierd going on with the call charges as we now have some national and mobile call charges showing on My Account. I am sure this is a minor confusion though.

      1.) are we allowed to re-sell it legally?
      2.) obviously I won't be opening it and selling it boxed pack but how the warranty would work for proposed buyer?!
