New Customers Telstra BYO Plan - 20GB Data + Unlim Calls/Sms for $49/Month + $200 Gift Card (for Ported Numbers) @ JB Hi-Fi

3280

So the JB Hi-Fi deal is on again.

I wanted to provide some clarity on how I went about it as I have seen these questions answered a number of times. I have successfully gone through the process so wanted to share:

I was a Telstra post-paid customer as of this morning
I went into Vodafone and purchased a $2 SIM Starter kit and worked with the in person lady to port my number across. This whole process took about 10mins
I actually added $8 of data/voice credit as I needed my phone right away before getting into JB - I don't think this step is necessary
I went into JB hi-fi and signed up to the plan as a new customer roughly an hour after switching to vodafone

Everything is up and running successfully. Apple music is renewed for free for 6 months and I've got the full 20gb data.

All in all, a quick easy process and well worth the effort.

but you won't get the gift card.

    • +2

Live chat can give a $200 jb gift card?

    • +3

Rep just confirmed over live chat they won't honour this as an existing customer, nor will they do it over live chat.

      • I find it varies greatly what the chat rep can offer between reps. Signed the $49 with $10 discount and 10GB + 5GB very recently, had some setup issues as usual and had to make a call and a few more chats to sort out, some of which didn’t end well. Baffling the final chat rep resolved everything the other chat/call/manager couldn’t.

    • …and no you can't. I tried 5 times before eventually signing up for this deal.

  • +4

Says $100 gift card in the fine print 🤔

    • +1

      Bad JB Hifi 😨

    • +3

      I can confirm it's a $200 gift card

      • Jbhifi gift card or generic gift card?

        • +1

JB HiFi. I went with my work mate and she got the Samsung Note 8 along with this deal. She took the $200 and applied it directly to the payment of the Note 8. We also used our work perks to buy jb egift cards @ 7.5% off so her total was about $740. Also scored the $20 voucher for spending over $100 on the 24/11.

        • @Neilgero:

That's fantastic! All you need now is salary sacrifice and BOOM, you've paid about $350 for a $1000 phone.

  • Sorry if stupid question, but do you have to buy a mobile phone for this to apply?

    • Nope

    • +5

Nope! For future reference, any plan that's advertised as BYO = Bring Your Own device. They're SIM-only plans that are usually contracted for 12 months at a time, but don't come with a handset so you need to supply your own.

      • +2

But for the records you "can" add a handset at any stage and pay it off over 12 or 24 months.

        • How much are the repayments?? What if I want an iPhone x??

        • -1

          @dannnnn:

Buy the sim 1st than use the gift card for iPhone.?

        • @windwai: but how do i "add" a handset and pay it off over 24 months??

  • does the telstra 24x7 app work when on telstra thru jb hifi as it does diretly thru telstra?

    • +1

Yes. It is a telstra sim. Just being on sold by JB. You are a normal telstra customer with this deal.

  • Isn't the porting bonus applied as Telstra credit, not a JB gift card?

    • From the fine print it looks like you should receive both - I'm chatting to them on live chat now so I'll let you know

    • +1

Porting bonus is $10 from Tesltra as a credit so makes the phone plan $49.

Plus get the $200 JB gift card

      • My point is that you should be getting the card regardless of porting if it's the same as the previous deals.

  • Is this for a 12mth plan? I can't see any mention of it in the ad.

    • +2

Yes. You can see it under the $49 figure, bit blurry. The $49 price continues after the 12 months too until you cancel contract or change plans.

  • +3

The newspaper ads looks to be quite confusing/misleading. The fine print says $100 JB gift card and $10 telstra credit per month? And the $49 per month already includes the $10 pm telstra credit. The contract seems to be for 12 months.

  • +7

its actually a 59 plan, the $10 credit makes it 49 per month
its a 15gb plan, with an extra 5gb per month
    its a 12 month contract
when you sign up, they print you a docket, you take that to the front counter and they give you a $200 gift card valid for 2yrs

I ported my mrs, but the port actually took 24hrs to complete (aldi to telstra)

    • I wish Telstra/JB would just state it like that. It would be so much better for everyone - including Telstra & JB.

  • Does the plan include any international allowances?

    • +1

      I believe not.

  • I was told by jbhifi frankston, that because im an existing telstra customer if i port out to vodafone and then back in it will flag on their system that ive been with telstra and i wont qualify for this deal, they said it would take a month to clear.
    Is this right?

    • +1

I've been told JB cannot tell on their system when you port out and back in

      • +1

        Can tell.

        • Mate, i'm a traveller with work & holiday visa. I know you mentioned before that passport & visa can be used for ID, but is the duration of the visa matters? I'm gonna extend the visa in the next 2 months.

        • How did OP do it then??

        • @ALOZ: generally not if combined with other id. You'd need 4 forms though. Passport Visa/Drivers License with Medicare card + 2 X debit cards or Government issued photo ID.

        • @chumlee: depends on the deal. Don't know really, someone might have bent the rule but Telstra may claw back the discount for this promotion (port out And in is specifically Listed as ineligible).

        • @Dealhunter967671: Could you elaborate more about the 2 x debit cards?
So i need 2 bank accounts?

        • @ALOZ: no it's just you need 4 seperate forms of ID with a passport being the main. Debit and credit for example with your name. Standard 100 points thing

      • +1

Confirmed they can tell when you ported out.

When I did mine I could see in the account history that I had ported to Optus 9 minutes before visiting JB HIFI to port back in.

JB HIFI don't care though - Telstra pays them commission regardless.

    • Would also like to know as currently in same situation looking to try it out tomorrow.

    • +4

As mentioned in my post, I was in this exact situation and it wasn't an issue at all.

There was no flag in the system and I still had a Telstra account due to having cable internet so nothing to worry about people.

    • +4

      I doubt it very much.

  • +1

Will telstra get me out of my current contract if i join this?

    • +28

They will also buy you a Ferrari and pay off your mortgage

      • +2

        awesome! sign me up!

      • -1

Is the Ferrari as prestigious as a $80'000 BMW m3 ?

        • +3

Surely your friend from Westpac investment arm can answer your question?

        • If the M3 is new that would be quite a deal !

This article is worth reading by anyone using any telco. Telstra has admitted to deceiving customers and is offering compensation to those affected. Most people don't know about it.

    link

You can check your internet speed and compare it to what you were promised by going to www.speedtest.telstra.com
Check this multiple times over a week or two.

I won't be engaging in a conversation about it, just wanted to share the article.

    • +8

That's NBN though, different kettle of fish.

    • +4

      For anyone reading…

They weren't deceiving customers, they just weren't doing their due diligence when people were ordering higher speed plans than their crappy FTTN connections can provide.

Very few ISP's were actually doing this check, Telstra were just the first to actually start offering money back to people who were affected.

      • -3

they just weren't doing their due diligence when people were ordering higher speed plans than their crappy FTTN connections can provide.

        That's deception.

And Telstra have provisioned me with 33Mbit/s after ordering 100Mbit/s on non-NBN HFC so it has nothing to do with NBN.

Telstra willfully defrauds people which is why the ACCC found that they willfully defraud people.

They must love customers like you though :D

        • +2

Telstra have provisioned me with 33Mbit/s after ordering 100Mbit/s on non-NBN HFC

Failure to apply the speed boost is likely more an error in their billing system, not deception. I agree that it shouldn't be that way at all and is unacceptable.

so it has nothing to do with NBN.

The entire article is about FTTN and FTTB…

They must love customers like you though :D

I'm with Aussie Broadband.. ditched Telstra the second I got FTTP.

  • I'm with Telstra pre-paid, can I keep my number and get this?

    • +1

Only porting out to Vodafone or Optus first

    • You should be able to, I know you can going from Optus prepaid to Optus postpaid.

  • Is it a $200 JB Hi-Fi voucher or $100 voucher?

    • +1

$200 voucher. It's a typo in the fine print.

    • +1

Looks like a Typo, the ad shows $200 but the fine print says $100. Pretty sure they would need to honour the $200 otherwise its bait and switch

  • Is it possible to add the $10 international calling (unlimited for 10+ countries) in this contract?

    • +1

It is a normal plan from Telstra so you can add on as normal.

  • If I was too port out of telstra that's connected on a family plan could i reconnect it to that family plan?
I'm in a 12 month BYO plan that just ended today.
Sorry about grammar and spelling, using a old tablet.

    • Sorry I don't know the answer to this one as I'm not in that situation.

  • +1

The reward appears to be worth the effort! Shall give this a go very soon :)

    • +2

Given it took about 10mins in Voda and 20mins in JB due to it being super busy with this deal, I'd say 30mins is worth the effort :)

      • -1

Does it need to be done in a JB store or also online/phone?
Why do you need 10 mins with Voda? I am with Voda but my contract has ended, thought they don't need to know anything from me.

        • +2

OP was already a Telstra post paid customer and had to port their number to Vodafone so they could port their number back into Telstra, as per the requirements of the deal. You are with Vodafone and can walk straight into JB and get this deal, however.

      • It didn't work for me.

        Ported out to Voda.
        Rise at JB.
The guy pulled out a T&C document.
Has to be an account held for 30-days.
He tried putting it through the system and it was denied.
        No gift card.
        No $10 credit.

        Not happy.

        • Go to a different JB and try again. It'll work.

        • You just got unlucky with a dick rep - another JB you'll do fine.

  • How long is the plan?
Edit: Nevermind. Minimum of 12 months

  • It’s great to see this deal roll around again, I grabbed it on the first run, too bad the Mrs has till next June on her Optus plan.

Has anyone had difficulties with redeeming Apple Music? I’ve tried twice to redeem but it has failed and charged me the monthly rate.

    • +1

Not related to this deal but when I previously signed up to a MX plan I had issues. I spoke with Telstra online and they simply credited my account the money on the assurance that I wouldn't cancel for 6 months. I was happy to oblige and continued using it beyond the 6 months as well

      • Thanks mate, I’ll give that a whirl :)

  • Hmm tempting.. I'm looking for a new sim plan to go with my Essential phone. Couldn't get the Optus one yesterday, but maybe this is worth a look. The Telstra network is supposed to be pretty good I hear.

  • I will say good deal considering it’s Telstra… how will it compare with Optus 40$ (now 30$ for clickfrenzy) 15gb + 300 mins intl

  • Anyone know if Aldi using Telstra network is considered a port out?

    • I'm in a same dilemma !! currently with Aldi Mobile & wondering if I could be eligible for this offer!! coz Aldi use Telstra network

    • +1

I was on Aldi mobile and ported in just fine

      • Thanks…..will give it a go too then

    • Yes it works I just switched over from Aldi.

  • So I have to buy 12 month $708 plan for this to work right?

    • It's a $49 p/m plan over 12 months so no up front payment or anything required.

    • How did you get the number $708? 49 x 12 = $588

  • Can you port over from Telechoice who uses the Telstra Network?

  • +1

Can you do data share sim on this plan? Can't find anything on the Telstra website.

    • Yes, my iPad automatically data shared against this plan. As long as they’re on the same bill.

      • Is there an extra cost for this?

        • -1

          No

        • @Lucifersfury82: Sorry to be a nuisance but extra sim cards for no extra charge is the only thing keeping me at Optus at the moment. I have tried Telstra and they tell me they can give me an extra sim but want to charge $5 each per month (I currently have three extra using my phone data at Optus). If there is a way to get them for nothing I would love to know how, could you explain how you managed it.

        • @robbyjones:

Ah ok, no the additional device needs to be on a plan. My iPad is on a 20gig plan also which pools to 40gig between the devices.

        • @robbyjones:

I can confirm telstra is $5 per month for the data share sim.

Telstra will not discount. Instead, they offered me vertual voicemail free of charge, instead of the $5 per month fee that it attracts with Telstra.

For reference, i ported out as the data share sim did not work in an iphone, unlike optus.

        • @robbyjones:
Free 2nd sim using the one account's data?

I just Live Chat'd Optus to ask this question and they told me I'd need to get a $15/month data only SIM…

http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phone-plans/data-sharing seems to be suggesting the same thing - you need to have the 2nd SIM on a plan and then you can pool the total data across both SIMs.

How did you get a free 2nd SIM?

        • +1

@Orqq: grandfathered from a previous contract. They can do it they just won't now.

    • Yes, its $5 extra per month for upto 5 data sims.

However, unlike the Optus data share sims, the Telstra ones ONLY work in mobile broadband devices. Telstra data share sims do NOT work in mobile devices like an iphone or S8.

I got caught out the last time this offer was around. Luckily, Telstra allowed me to cancel my contract and port out without penalty.
