Hi Guys,

I just found some of the Xiaomi Power strips that is going on sale for $12.94 plus $1.77 shipping(By selecting the ePacket method instead of the AliExpress standard method) that comes to a total of $14.71.

I've bought one a few months back and find that its really good as the built quality and materials they have used is high quality stuff. Hence, I am buying a few extras to use.

Awesome little power strip to take with you on holiday OR to use it around the house(and YES, I know there will be comments 'SOON' from people on Ozbargain that has PhD in electrical standards stating that it is not compliance etc.. Anyways, I'm not here to debate or trying to sell it to you).

Don't forget to use your cashrewards for extra discounts!

      • Here's a Lesson for any who want to buy more than 1:

        • That Au$ 1.77 pays for up to 4 Power Strips

        Buying More than 4?

        • Submit several Orders, each for 4 or fewer (for any "remainder" Order)
        • PS Why don't they show the plug, at the end of the power lead? Is it UK or EU or What?

(We WON'T be buying any of these, only because we recently bought a lot of 6-power-port powerboards ($10 each, was supposed to be $20, but some1 made a sign w/ typo in it, so we all saved 50%,on top of the intended discount).

These also had Surge Protection, which the deal item seems to lack…?)

After buying a FAKE Xiaomi powerbank via Aliexpress I am a bit wary of buying anything else from Aliexpress except from a known, verified by OzB, seller.
Can anybody vouch for this seller, AmberYi's CE Top Store? It has only a 98% rating.

By the way, this app from Xiaomi purports to be able to identify fake Xiaomi devices.

and don't forget Xiaomi's own verification check

.and the Chinese Govt see will be able to listen in and control not only your connected devices, but you !!!!

You should only buy ASIO err AS approved devices, otherwise they can burn your house down & deny your insurance claim.

    <renoves foil hat>
Are the usb ports shared 2A or is it a single 2A abd 2 x 1A?

    • Its shared 3.1A

      • id prefer 2A x 3 = 6A

        • +28

I'd prefer to be a millionaire but I don't waste time on OzBargain telling people.

    • +5

Leave the foil hat on. It may help identify you after your transformer brick get pulled out slightly overnight and you don't hear the arcing. Here's the funny thing about ISO and AS regulations - they have almost invariably been introduced against a strong fight-back by the less ethical manufacturers in response to a series of potentially or actual lethal events where the cause has been identified and mitigation strategies implemented.

Spreading the Phase/neutral pins on this would ensure a bit more safety, but the best way of ensuring that the thinner prongs aren't pulled out of the wall socket would be to have it in one behind a unit, which is, in itself, not quite kosher but often happens. The danger then is that if arcing is happening, it may pass un-noticed.

      • +1

        I dont read German.
What do you want to say? Some safety standard is leas than others?

      • I'll just install one of these little beauties

        • I bought something similar from an Australian supplier with 2 AU powerpoints and 2 USB. The buttons broke after a short time and the supplier sent a replacement, no questions asked. As expected there is a big difference between Clipsal, HPM and cheaper Bunnings and other brands.

Old Clipsal powerpoints can last many years eg 10+ years and have replaceable switches - plastic is heavier and appears much stronger too.

      • +3

As an owner of a mi-plug. It has all 3 pins, and a shutter - something which isn't a standard in Aus.

So apart from writing death in italics what are the actual dangers? I'm talking physical hardware, not legislation/compliance

        • +7

Xiomi make good gear - but to Chinese standards which, when met, are not unsafe. What can be is that the pins that plug into your wall socket are thinner than the Australian standard, and with a slightly worn socket, you can have arcing between the pins and the socket. This is not generally considered to be a good thing. It is something you can pick up on if you are aware of it - my main point was an objection and distaste for the inference that Australian Standards are some worthless conspiracy - especially coming from some muppet trying to persuade me to buy something that doesn't meet such requirements who thinks they are being smart…

        • +2

          @terrys:

Just looked up the dimensions myself. As far as I can tell, they're exactly the same except the chinese plug is 1mm shorter. The width of the pins is the same.

Considering sockets squeeze the pins from the side, not the end, I'm not sure it's unsafe as you're thinking.

Also, sockets aren't made with a tight tolerance, assuming that there isn't a gap - I can't see how it's any less safe than an au plug. Even more so with the most plugs these days having the insulated part on the pins.

Anyway, each to their own. If you've got buzzing/arching, you've got bigger issues with your power systems

        • +2

@terrys: No the Chinese pins are actually 1mm longer, not 1mm thinner and also as Davo said they connect on the sides not at the rear. Pin width varies according to rated capacity which is why you may notice a difference in some items.

Yes Xiaomi make good gear and it's better than most crap China exports as it's for local use made under their own name as they want to be a trusted brand with a good reputation. The export market is an afterthought for them and products like these they don't even export that I know of.

I've got two of these. In one the caps for the USB portion are a bit noisy but no problems so far. Very high pitched so many won't hear it (I have very sensitive hearing still).

        • +1

          @Rutger: "Very high pitched so"

I'm rolling off rapidly @ 10.5 KHz :-/ Still, I'm now OK if that annoying TV flyback transformer makes a comeback.

        • @terrys: ~13.5 KHz for me still (or that's the limit of my speakers).

I just tried it again now and it's silent so given I'd only just started using it it's probably not a dodgy cap.

        • @terrys: yes those high pressure sales muppets forcing you ito buying things. There ought to an an AS regulating them! Or are they protected by the face corporations trying to undermine the fearless employees of ASIO err AS? Bastards!

        • +1

          @terrys:

          I'm rolling off rapidly @ 10.5 KHz :-/

Likewise, but look at the upside - now AM radio sounds just as good as FM!

        • @supabrudda: There was. Some places even told councils what they could put on the outside of their flats.

      • Oh they're thinner? Where does it say that? They're longer.

If you saw some of the crap that has passed Australian Standards you'd realise what a joke it can be (just have a look at bunnings/kmart/etc). And so you know for sure that it doesn't comply with Australian Standards? (With the exception of angle of the cable exiting the plug?

I've had HPM products with after a year have lose prone connectors which cause arcing. And HPM (used to) make half decent products. Nothing on par with the old Clipsal stuff of course.

  • Would these be ok with a USB type C converter on the USB ports?

    • +1

I used mine with a type c cable no problems its not QC.

The was a cheaper deal mid April, $8.99 USD including shipping. I am happy with it, but will wait for a better deal rather than getting hooked this time.

For those who would prefer a local option, target have 4 outlet powerboards with 2 USB ports for $15. I've been using them for a few months and they work great.

    2 x USB charger.
    4 x 240V outlet.
    1 metre length.
    Surge protection.
    240V 10A 2400W max loading.
5V 3.4A max dual USB output.
    USB cable not included.
    For indoor use only.

    • probably your best bet.
the Reject Shop has also cheap stuff, so why order unless your house needs replacing?

    • +5

Thats brilliant. Why the heck would anyone test their luck with a uncertified item from O/S ? For only a few $$$ extra.

      • +17

Probably because that target one looks like a bag of dicks and also only has AU ports, whereas the Xiaomi one is universal (to an extent).
Also, that Target one no doubt comes from the same country as the Xiaomi one, China, except it comes from some shitty cheap and nasty company/factory line, unlike Xiaomi who have a pretty good rep.

  • Are these work Australian plugs or must you plug it into a adaopter to use? I take it by the picture the actual strip takes most countries plugs?

    • No adapter required to plug into wall outlet.

Yes the strip takes multiple plugs.

  • I like this Bunnings one, 4.8 amp total 3x usb, 2x device stand and 3x power $24.98.
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/click-desktop-power-station-with…

    • Any idea what the max per USB port is?

  • I own 2 of these small compact for travel and they trip the circuit ok when overloaded. The only problem I've had with one of them is there's a protective louvre/flap that the power plug pushes through to make contact to the circuit. Mine jammed after a while so you couldn't insert the plug ended up pulling it apart and and ripping out the louvre it wasn't an easy job.

    • Must be an older or chinese market version as mine don't have that. The Xiaomi wifi plug I have does.

      • +1

Close up pic you can see the round euro pins are covered by a louvre my AU pins have it too.

        • +1

          You're right, my mistake.

The Xiaomi wifi plug I have has it on the earth pin as well so you can't only plug in a two prong whereas this is just on the live pins.

  • These are not in compliance, but certainly better built and IMO safer than the cheap $3 power boards you see at bunnings.

    • you can sue Bunnings if their $3 board caught on fire, with this chinese cheap stuff good luck suing them.

  • Would a sharp-eyed customs officer chuck this out when seeing it doesn't have compliance certification?

    • Took mine through customs several times today. No issues 😉

Never been an issue the years I've had mine. Same applies to chargers and power banks.

    • +1

Nope. Not in their job description. You can't sell, install or use non-compliant devices commercially but personal use seems to be ok (NAL).

  • Thanks OP. Bought one. I have one of these and I really liked the quality.

  • Thanks OP. I bought one for travel. Nice and small with universal inputs.

    • what universal inputs, doesnt fit uk at all

  • Thanks OP. Just bought one!

  • I'm confused by the "standard", choice of :
    . White add EU plug
    . Black
    . Black add EU plug
I was kinda expecting to see White AU plug …

    • +1

You just need to select either 'WHITE' OR 'BLACK' as the plugs is the same as the AU plug(Upside down version)

  • Got one of these from previous deals and USB ports are not working at all.

    • then return it if it was DOA

  • How long's the cord on this?

    • +1

Almost 2 meters (1.8 meters to be exact).

  • +2

Aliexpress has $2 off $5+ orders for new accounts. Brings price down to … Order amount:

Please be careful about this item when charging to its USB ports 2 devices simultaneously. I bought my power strip last June 21, 2017 from Ebay AU. For two weeks it was working pretty good. Until one night, I was charging two cellphones (Samsung S8 and Iphone 5s) simultaneously, I smelled a BURNING PLASTIC from the power outlet (USB ports). I immediately turned off the power source. Upon further checking the item, I was alarmed that it became BURNING HOT to the touch! Not just some heat from normal charging. I bought mine for $30 from Ebay, Australian seller. Tried to return it, but the seller offered me a refund of $10 only. I escalated the matter to Ebay. Hopefully, they can help me.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xiaomi-Power-Board-Mi-Powerboard-…

    • why did you pay $30? :S

      • I had $10 Ebay credit which was expiring so I used it.

    • Different model.

      • +1

It's the same model I think.

  • So many upvotes.. These are always at this price give or take a few dimes

  • Not an AU wall plug version?

    • +2

An upside down version of the AU plugs - It still works :)

      • Sweet thanks

  • Thanks OP

  • +1

PhD in electrical standards stating that it is not compliance etc

Pretty sure it's you that's acting like you have the PhD by stating you don't care - i.e you're smarter than the experts?

Anyway, my reluctance is if it causes a fire, I'm not covered. So if I lose $millions in damage, nope not covered, because it was a non-compliant cause. That personally terrifies me.

  • Just word of warning. USB is not powerful and it makes noise, does not overheat, but sounds dangerous. Louvres are quite annoying.
Otherwise perfect design, just not good guts.

    • Have you tried charging two or three devices simultaneously? I had some really alarming OVERHEATING issues. Not using it anymore.

      • 2 devices max, 3 make such noise that I just stop it. Some not powerful ones like watches or small bike lights are ok, but not phones. And yes, it warms up.

  • How the Hell are the votes so opposite in the previous deal!? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/302458 2$ cheaper & it even got 2 negs!! am i missing something, what's better on this deal.. how longs is the shipping from this site by the way
