I love it when a salesperson says that! "Lower than cost price." Reminds me of the good old days :-)

    • +19

      almost as good as

WE GUARANTEE TO HAVE THE LOWEST PRICES AND WE WILL NOT BE BEATEN ON PRICE

then you try and price-match and they say…

WE CANT DO THAT, ITS TOO CHEAP, WAY BELOW OUR COST PRICE

then cry for the next 10 years as internet shopping takes majority of your business profits

      • +9

Or not cry, blame your poor sales figures on professionals and lobby the government to impose GST on $10 items that you don't even sell.

      • +4

Reminds me of Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tubeman for some reason.

    • +3

To be fair if it's a business model like Harvey Norman you can buy lower than cost price, and often will.

Slight condition being cost price for the franchisee (the store) not franchisor (Gerry). His 8% is included in the store cost price and he can effectively force franchisees to sell at a loss - "sell it or be met at the front door tomorrow by the area manager and a locksmith".

  • +1

Ok price considering there are almost never RPI 3 deals on OzB

  • +3

Pi is getting a bit dated and overpriced.
If you want a cheap Linux box and don't use the GPIO, "android" S905 boxes are better.
If you want to do electronics projects, the NodeMCU has wifi and is under A$5 delivered!

That said, sometimes the Pi is still the best.

    • +9

Pi3 has good hardware profile and easy to find resources.

    • +7

the selling point of the pi is what it always has been, the community around it

    • I need a wifi connection for my Samsung TV, which only has RJ45 LAN port. What would be my cheapest option?
I'm considering a Pi3 for this. Should that be an acceptable idea?

    • +1

Yes definitely NodeMCU is the way to go for electronics project. Its really easy to use with the arduino IDE and uses much lower power than a PI. Big community and lots of free resources on the web too.

  • I'm looking for something to use as a home automation server. Would one of these be good value, or would I be better with one of the S905 boxes or other devices that manic has mentioned?

    • +3

Rpi 3 running Home Assistant is a very very popular option.

      • This.

A s905 SoC would be better but if you have difficulty you won't get all that much help. Oh and definitely Home Assistant. 732 components supported so far with dozens more in development.

    • +3

I'm running Domoticz on a Raspberry Pi Zero W.

      No Issues.

Unlike the local Gym slogans of "It's bigger than you think!", the Zero W is "Smaller than you think!"

      YMMV

    • If not this then I don't know what. There's a million electronics geeks out there doing that kind of stuff on the Pi. The s905/x boxes are media centres and that's pretty much it.

  • Ships out with 48 Working hours = 6 Business days?
I have always encountered problems with Zapals and their Shipping.
My items NEVER ship unless I enquire about them even when I pay for Expedited Shipping/DHL etc.
This is up to a week after I have paid etc. so there is no need for the expedited shipping as the item will not arrive any sooner.

So far I have spent $260 in 3 orders. Maybe I just have bad luck with them.

    YMMV

    Regards

    • +1

I just un-expired the Arrow.com deal. Costs $34.99 US dollars. they ship via Fedex which is a faster courier service.

      • Once the item ships it gets here quickly, no problem.
My Zapals problem is that it takes longer than a week BEFORE the item ships.
No explanation offered whatsoever when you enquire.

        The Transit time is fine.

        Regards

        • Ha i am experiencing this issue at the moment lol with a purchase unrelated to this deal. I got tracking so I can see days later Singapore Post hasn't even received the item to ship yet.

      • I just un-expired the Arrow.com deal

The deal is still showing as expired for me.

Arrow are still showing it at that price, good find!

  • Use the pi it has very good community support whereas the 905x boxes aren't all the same. Eg mi box no ethernet some others have 100m some are 1gig like nexbox …. The pi is standard .

  • Coupon code "SMP0437" is not valid.

    • Hi, coupon code "SMP0437" still works. You need to log in your account to apply the coupon. Try again:)

      • When does this offer expire?

  • 48 working hours

So with in 8 days…? lol
    48 / 8 = 6 days. 5 days + weekend + 1 extra = 8 days…

Think you should say with in 2 working days instead… :P

    • Hi, thanks for pointing out. We have revised it:)

  • So I can make this into a ROM playing game system for how much more and effort? Because very interested. But i would need some help.

    • +2

Download retropie onto SD card and copy games to rom directory, there's a bit of configuration but other than that it's easy as pie.

    • Probably 10 minutes of effort. Google how to intall retropie.

      • just did it on the weekend with a rpi2 - no tweaking at all to get roms working fine. N64 no good though on rpi2….psx, snes and megadrive all test fine

      • +2

took me way longer, easily 15 minutes

      • But it's just a motherboard, what do i need to do to make it work and look nice?

        • +1

          define 'nice'…
a case which can be had on ebay for $3… or you can 3d print a mini NES box… or just make one yourself from cardboard etc…

you need a controller pad if you dont have a usb/bluetooth one for xbox/pc
          and a kb/mouse
          and also prob a wall socket 5v / 3amps.

        • @spoonmugen: Cheers, cheap is fine. Wall socket? an adapter? Please explain what you mean. Thanks mate.

        • @defmay: you need to power it right?
doesnt come with a power cable ;)

        • @spoonmugen: i was wondering what you meant though, i only ever say adapter,

    • You can grab pre-made images here, format your SD card, image the card and away you go:
      http://www.arcadepunks.com/retro-pi-downloads-page/

  • +6

I feel like someone should turn the tables and blatantly shout something random about the NES Mini …

    • I laughed!

  • considering the price and comments here, I'm not expecting to see this arrive on my door before August.

    • +5

You can get it from Element 14, for the standard price of A$49.50 including shipping:

      https://au.element14.com/raspberry-pi/raspberrypi-modb-1gb/r…

They are reliable and normally have Australian stock.

      • Plus GST though, so about AU$54. The Arrow deal mentioned above is about AU$46 if you use 28 Degrees credit card, but it will be a couple of days. Element14 is usually next business day.

        • My bad - I didn't remember about Element 14 not showing GST.

        • +1

          @RedHab:
It's annoying, but it probably won't be a problem for much longer. I think Element14 won't last long. Frequently I want something next day, so I go to the Element14 website only to discover they have six types of what I want, but all with "6-7 days delivery". Digikey and Mouser are faster and cheaper, if you have >$100 of parts to order. They have a larger range too.

If I can afford to wait a week, RS components are equally slow, but have free shipping for online orders. If you have an account they will price beat.

  • Timely, need to buy another RPi myself. But, i think it's worth paying a little extra and getting it much quicker and with local support.
Thanks @RedHab, almost forgot about Element14. Core Electronics are also good, but a little dearer for the board…
    https://core-electronics.com.au/

Also, don't forget you may also need the PSU, microSD card, case ….

    • Ah, Element14 prices are ex-tax, so need to add GST and may not be able to buy from them anyway.
$54.45 + $6.95 delivery at Core Electronics. I'm buying from there.

  • who's running theirs on a iphone/ipad/samsung/phone charger?
i've got a samsung charger thats 5v - 2amps - worried the amps might not be enough?

    • 2.5A is recommended for pi 3b. I just started mine up on a 2A Samsung charger, with a logitech wireless keyboard in 1 usb port. There is a yellow lightning bolt on screen, so i guess it's not happy about the power situation. It seems to be working normally, but i'm not sure how stable it will be.

      • LOL, so that is what it is. I was thinking that it might be something new on Kodi.I am running it with a nexus 7 (2012) charger.

        • I thought it might be telling me storms were on the way, but no, it's about the power.
Just watched a couple of hours of stuff though, so seems stable enough.

        • @todmanpla: I did run fine for me as well but I read it might screwup the SD card at times.

        • @haribabuvk, yes i read that too, and i can confirm it also, because i now have errors on my sd. It still boots ok, but i will need to restore from backup. Looks like the 2.5A is definitely needed.

  • I couldn't quite figure out whether I actually got this discounted/cheap but the promo definitely got me.. not only did I order a board but also a case, camera and while I was there, a nitecore D4 battery charger and.. well by the time you add in the shipping I wasn't getting a whole lot of change out of $250! Damn you OzB! :-)

    • Hope you used cashrewards ;)

      • I did try to.. but I'm never sure whether it has tracked it and added it until well after (and sometimes it just hasn't..)

I was kicking myself the other day because I made probably my largest purchase (> $2500) on ebay and it didn't go through cashrewards.. sigh!

        • Well you can always email them and they are pretty helpful, might take a while to get a reply though.

I have had 2 of my purchases tracked this way, but nothing as big as yours. Just try your luck, you might end up saving some cash. All th best.

  • Tempted.
    Is the ethernet port gigabit?
Would it be achievable to use it as a poe powered nas with a compatible pi poe cards I see floating around?
Ideally I'd love to connect up a usb3 portable hdd, and have that powered via the poe card also.

    • +1

It's 100mbit and shares the bus with usb …..I have one sitting on a portable USB 3 drive as a Nas and read and writes are awful over teh network but it's a htpc so doesn't matter too much

      • cheers. So the usb ports provide enough to power a portable hdd?

        • +1

yeah mate a couple of mine can power a toshiba 1tb or 2tb portable just from USB, make sure to buy official power supply if you use any others you will most likely have issues with stuff

if you feel like it you can buy a powered USB hub and a bunch of external hdd's and really turn it into a full blown NAS.

look on element14 at the desktop pi case its about 60 dollars and lets you connect a sata drive to it and makes it look pretty stylish

  • -1

And it is AUD 43.05 if you use cashrewards.

  • +1

Element 14 has it for $49.50 with 1 day delivery, this includes anything in stock, bought the official 7" touch screen as well.

    • Element 14 prices don't include GST. Otherwise they are fast - you'll get a huge box delivered with a tiny Pi in it.

      • Nah, when i ordered it it was in a small little express padded baggie thing. just enough for both to fit in.

    • the 7" screen is around $90 dollars. You can get a 7" tablet more powerful than that for $150. Though more things which can be done with Pi.
Thinking to get one for kids. Any idea what else I can get along with Pi.
Thinking to get Pi first from element14 and rest can be anywhere where it is cheap.

      • +1

just buy the official PSU, you can get it here next day delivered via TOLL for free via e14/farnell/rs components

        install Kodi/RetroPie/Pi-Hole

go on eBay and buy an MDF arcade cabinet flatpack kit for $125 and build an entire arcade machine with your kids even for a cool project

      • Those tablets are good for apps and consuming content, however a Pi is for teaching IO, programming, home projects, linux/debian/raspian?

If you just want to buy a tablet for content, deffinitly get a android/apple tablet, but if you're looking to build a project with the kids, definitely a Pi.

The projects you can do with the Pi are limitless.

        • Yea, that is the idea to show kids about it.
Any idea on good projects to start for kids aged 7 and 9?

        • +1

@Gaggy: A fun one when i was younger was home lighting control(and light shows) or sensors and switches for custom buttons and stuff.

  • @Zapals SMP0437 Didnt work for me (logged in, new sign up)
    Suggestions?

    • Didn't work for me either.

  • +1

    Hi OP,

Ordered one on 4th July and no tracking information received yet? What happened to the "shipping out in 2 working days"?

    • Same

    • Ditto.

      Very disappointed OP!

      • Funnily enough, emailed them and magically my order has now shipped.
        Oh well.

  • Well I ordered this the day it was posted and admittedly, it's not urgent for me - but I can confirm what others said. Mine hasn't shipped yet.

  • Mine shipped on the 10'th I think and it ended up leaving Singapore on the 12'th. So I'm up to 16 days now.

  • +1

    Hey Guys,

Has anyone received theirs yet? I ordered when this deal first popped up and still nothing…

    Cheers Rob.

    • Hi Rob, thanks for your message. Would you please PM your order number? I'll check for you:)

      • PM'ed thankyou!

  • I have also not got mine, it's now 21 full days since ordering, apparently it shipped 15 days ago, it left their country 13 days ago,…… even the slowest air and local shipping companies would normally get it to you within 10 days, right?

  • I got a reply, can't chase up if it's missing unless it's 30 days, so not until August 10 should I officially be worried.

  • Still no sign, did anyone else order and did they get it yet? I'm very near a month, extremely slow for Singapore…

  • +1

    Hey Guys,

    Still nada, Anyone….

    • +1

Ok it's not just me, man I figured Singapore would be way better than China for shipping :/

      • Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Package has supposedly been in Australia since the 16th.

        • Ok how'd you get that info? Mine shows leaving Singapore but not clarification of Australian entry.

        • @hamwhisperer:

From the shipping info on Singapore Post:

          16/07/2017
Arrival at Destination Post (Country: AU)
          12/07/2017
Despatched to overseas (Country code: AU)

So I'm guessing it has to be held up at customs or something, because I have never had a package take this long to reach me after entering the country.

        • @dtfm: Great, mine only says "Despatched to overseas" and that's it……… (12th)

Double checked, yep, no landed in Aus notification yet

    • Still nothing here too
Apparently shipped on the 12 arrived in AU 17th.
Emailed Zapals who say wait 45 days ?
Called Aus Post and they can't find anything, not even a customs scan.
Emailed Zapals yesterday and still no reply …

      Awesome work Zapals!
