I love watching Chinese TV, especially those sequences where the resolute Chinese sense of community is on full display.

Always ready to lend a helping hand at times of adversity.

    Discount code LITB5USIRJUN u$5/Au$7.15

    • awesome, thank you so much

    • Whaaa!! Dammit :(

    • Where did you go to put in the discount code, I'm not getting any options to do this?

*edit, now showing up where to put it in.

      • where did you apply the code? I can't find it.

        • on checkout page -> bottom of the Payment Method section (search for Apply Coupon Code)

  • I tried installing Kodi on my samsung and followed a reputable youtube clip. I still can never find anything to stream - everything always says not available.

Is Kodi still going strong and I'm just unlucky? Will it work better on this than the kodi app on my phone?

    • Apparently SPMC is supposed to be quite good. Unofficial fork made by a former Android KODI dev.

    • Kodi is a media player and is stronger than ever! What you're talking about sounds like an addon, which vary wildly.

      • I downloaded the Kodi app, followed a 45 minute tutorial to set it up, can't find anything to watch lol. Maybe I need to invest more time.

        • Did you download any add ON's?

        • +2

Just install the Exodus addon to start with….

      • Na, SPMC is a legit (albeit unofficial) Kodi fork, as Clear mentioned. It was around before an official Kodi app for Android TV was available.

  • +2

How good is this for using with Plex?

  • 56.48 usd for me

    • Apply the coupon LITB5USIRJUN at checkout.

      • I see thx. Bought one

How does this not have a wired Ethernet port? Would have pulled the trigger for sure if it did.

  • Can someone tell me why I would get this over a Google Chromecast?

    • It has a remote and it can play through USB.

      • So if I had a media player AND a Chromecast it's really not worth getting?

        • They do the same thing but if you want 4k and play some light Android games then you should get the Mi box.

    • +3

Because it is a chromecast plus more.

      • Can you cast chrome tabs to it like a Chromecast? Some devices, like the roku, only support youtube casting. This would actually allow me to remove a chromecast and a roku from my main setup.

        • +1

          Apparently it does.

        • +1

You can cast your entire desktop if you wanted to.

        • @bargainist:

          Thanks!

    • +2

No competition. This does everything the Chromecast does, except with a remote that also has voice search. Not to mention loading awesome apps like Kodi - so much better than a basic media playback device, and having full Netflix and YouTube without having to pull out your phone or tablet. My kids are always using mine at home, and can do so on their own without needing to use an expensive mobile device to control it.

At this price, every tv should have one of these attached to it.

    • Because this has a built-in Chromecast, and you can do so much more.

    • Can use it without having to tether a device to it, it runs standalone. Also lets you run kodi to playback media over a windows network (SMB) so if you have a NAS for instance you can playback media from that without having to turn on your PC or use your phone as a middle man.

4k streaming with wifi? Yeeeahh nahhhh

    • +1

Works fine on my crappy Adsl2 connection, have watched quite a bit of the 4k Netflix content with it.

    • +2

I can't comment on 4K streaming, but it's handled Blu-Ray ISO rips (yes, my own discs) perfectly fine in Kodi on mine.

    • +1

Works fine for Netflix 4K on my box on NBN 100/40. Haven't tried local 4K content though but it's playing 1080p Blu-Ray rips with DTS-HD and no buffering issues whatsover.

    • +1

4k streaming only needs about 25mbit from memory, any reasonable wifi setup should be able to do that

    • +1

Use a 5GHz wifi network and you'll be sweet.

  • Sweet. Time to replace my olddddddddddd Roku 3!

  • What is the difference with 3C and 3S ?

    • +2

3C and 3S are the Chinese versions and are not running Android TV OS.

      • Thanks

  • anyone know how this works with 10bit x265 files?

    • haven't checked 10bit ones but the x265 ones of recent shows I tried work fine in Kodi.

  • Can you get the Indian channel on these?

    • +5

      Yes, through YuppTV.

      • or free via Kodi if you can find the right addons for streams though these are usually pretty flakey

  • cheapest yet

I ordered this during the last LightInTheBox deal. The item took two weeks just to ship (I suspect they run these offers like a ore-order) after it was marked as shipped it took weeks more to arrive.

The product packaging came sealed with plastic but inside the genuine Xiaomi charger had been replaced with an aftermarket brand (euro style which unlike the US style cannot be carefully bent to fit safely into AU plugs and sticks out from the wall). The batteries for the remote were also missing.

The Mi Box is fantastic (I have 3 now) but I recommend avoiding this company, very poor experience!!

    • +1

You do realise that the product has the option of EU or US adapter? Can't blame the store for receiving an EU adapter.

      • So they give you the genuine xiaomi charger if you choose US?

        • They should do. The international version is the same as what they sell in the US.

    • +1

Never heard of or experienced any China droid boxes coming with remote control batteries.

      • My Tanix TX3 came with batteries

      • +1

Bangood supplied from this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/297194 came with remote batteries batteries & genuine US type power adaptor. It also came in the orange printed box rather than the plain brown version.

        • How much was that again?

        • Bought from Lightinthebox and it came in the official US Orange box. Shipping took 3 weeks to WA from the date of despatch.

        • @batrarobin: Did you get an official xiaomi power adapter or they replaced it with a generic adapter?

        • Don't you need a transformer because US voltage different to AU?

        • @bargainist:

I will have a look tonight to see if it's branded or generic but honestly it doesn't really matter…It's a normal 5V power adapter that you can easily replace if stops working, cost about $5 from Aliexpress…so not overly concerned.

No you don't need a transformer because the power adapters these days are generally rated at 100V-240V 50/60hz so it's compatible almost anywhere in the world (same as laptop power adapters these days)

    • So it took more than 33 days to arrive at your house? Thanks for sharing your experience!

    • +5

People these days whine about anything really. Of course remote doesn't come with batteries, of course they would give you a eu plug if you picked the option, of course they take longer than the big guys (Kogan, dwi etc) to ship. That's why they can offer it as it is.

If you can offer all those stuff that you complained about with the same price yet still makes a profit; you won't need to be here looking at bargains.

      • +1

4-5 days processing is quoted on LightInTheBox, it actually took 14 days to ship. See others' comments on the previous deal. It then took another 21 days to arrive in Melbourne CBD.

Xiaomi package the device with 2xAAA batteries and a quality Xiaomi power supply sealed in the box. My Bangood and AliExpress orders both came with them inside the box, of course. Not with LightInTheBox.

I can't offer you "all those stuff" because I don't sell the Xiaomi Mi Box but if I was to buy another i'd jump on another deal from AliExpress or Bangood. Just sharing my experience.

        • +1

I bought it from the Banggood deal and emailed them when it hadn't arrived after 6 weeks. They refunded me, then it arrived two days later. With batteries and genuine Xiaomi power adapter sealed in the box.

  • Anyone else pay with PayPal and have their order still pending with lightinthebox?

Notice funds haven't been deducted out of my account even though there's a PayPal transaction listed.

Pretty sure last time I ordered with lightinthebox I paid with CC and went through immediately

    • The same thing happened to me. However, after about 20 minutes the payment cleared and the order is now in the "Packaging" stage.

      • Thank you! :)

        • paypal deducted , still pending in lightinthebox, over 2hrs now

        • @chutibuti:

Same here. Wonder if they push out the date to avoid any paypal disputes

        • @davodinkum:
My order went through after 5hrs..

  • picked one up, was either this or the aliexpress one but $72 is a good deal. Will report back in a month.

  • When I clicked on this link this deal only allowed express shipping at extra cost of $32.55.

This deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/303114) included normal shipping.

    YMMV

Edit - looks like you can get the free tracked shipping.

    • Seems only Free shipping available for quantity = 1. Add 2 and it's greyed out.

  • clicked submit and noticed mine was high. Too late looks like I paid $39 for express shipping :(

    • Email them

      • You might be able to amend the order. But emailing them would be helpful as well.

      • Opened a customer service ticket with them asking if easier to cancel and reorder or for them to change the shipping. Thanks.

  • What's the best guide to setting this up with kodi and addon's?

    • Just google how to install Kodi and how to install add ons on kodi - hundreds of guides

    • +2

Look up the Mchanga channel on YouTube. She produces fantastic instruction videos on setting up Kodi along with popular add-ons.

  • -2

I got this last time it was on sale from light in the box. Shipping was a little slow, even by Chinese standards, but it arrived fine, with an EU plug + au adaptor.
However, I haven't really found a use for it. All I wanted was something to stream plus 7, iView etc for my mum but there aren't very many android tv apps.
I wouldn't bother, unless someone can enlighten me as to what they use theirs for?

    • +3

Watch movies, youtube, netflix. Play some games. Isn't that worth $70? Considering the Apple TV 4 cost more than $250 which literally do the same thing but not even support 4k and could not play through USB yet.

      • Yeah I'd say the Apple TV is a bit underwhelming too. If I were spending in the region of $250 I'd just get an xbox one though, which can do all that plus play Xbox games.

I guess I wanted the media capabilities of the xbox one in a smaller, cheaper package.

I tried sideloading a few apps but got unstuck because they required touch input and I had a remote.

        • I agree with the last point. There are not many apps that natively support Android TV.

    • +2

You can just download the app on your phone if not available from the mi box then cast it instead.

    • +1

You can add Catch Up in Kodi/SPMC. It wasn't as easy to do as on a NUC (as in, a computer). You'll just need to get a file manager for the box and add to Kodi/SPMC as per the instructions. Until those channels make official Android TV apps, this is your best bet.

FYI, I literally did this all last night on a MiBox I'd bought for the MIL for this exact purpose. After having a play with it, I'm going to get one for myself. Saves me using a NUC with LibreElec (Kodi - local file streaming, Catch-Up TV), Xbox One (AnimeLab), and 3rd gen AppleTV (Netflix, Stan).

  • Hi is this better than MX-Q found here? http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/KODI-17-2-Full-Load-MXQ-4K-NEW-Andr…

Can someone tell the diff thanks!

    • +4

MXQ runs Android for phones and tablets. Mi Box runs Android TV. This is more suitable as a media player and works with Netflix HD.

  • I thought you could get plus seven and iView on the box? I watch a lot of those so if someone can confirm thanks.

    • You can get Plus 7 but not iView. The plus 7 app is really buggy too.

      • There is an unofficial iView, but IMHO the Kodi plugins for freeview are better.

  • +2

For those thinking of purchasing this just for Kodi, just wanted to share this news:
    Kodi Add On Piracy Lawsuits

    • +2

This is so stupid. Why are the companies not suing Microsoft because their os allow users to download and watch pirated movies?

      • They are going after the developers of the illegal streaming addons not the developers of Kodi itself.

  • Do people recommend eu or us connector or does it not matter as long as you have the plug to convert to Australian point?

    • us so u can just angle bend the pins with some pliers :)
