Great box, have had mine since release. It has come a long way since it first came out with several firmware updates, dont rely on out of date reviews to make up your mind.

    • Has Netflix fixed their app on it yet? One of my boxes works fine and the other just errors out all the time

      • Some people seem to have this issue but the majority are fine, possibly a HDMI handshake problem on your end. Netflix works fine for me, i play 4k netflix without any issues.

        • I reckon it is too, tried 4 HDMI cables, connected to my HDMI 2.0 Pioneer AVR, HDMI 2.0 Sony TV, friends HDMI 2.0 Sony TV and to my 1080p Sammy.

My other box and my Shield TV both work fine everywhere I've tried them, definitely a hardware/software issue on some of the Mi Boxes.

      • I initially had the issue with Netflix not working. One of the releases around January seemed to fix it though and have had no issues since.

    • How is Kodi 17 on it? I've noticed that 17 is a bit sluggish on my Nexus Player whereas 16.x was really smooth.

      • +1

perfect. I moved from using the laptop plugged to the tv to mibox with kodi17

    • -1

Is this box preloaded with Kodi and plugins etc?
I've bought a similar box before and had issues with it not picking up certain content on exodus.
Can you possibly do a test for me? Do a search in Exodus and see if you can get Pokemon Season 1. This is a good example as I've found some of these boxes don't find the content however on my microserver they all show up.

      • +3

this isnt a pirated kodi box from ebay. this doesn't even come with those plugins preinstalled, you will need to set all that up

        • Thanks it still suffers the same problem with exodus not picking up content so I'm going to pass! Why can't it just work like my microserver which is just vanilla Kodi!

  • Does this run Kodi smoothly?

    • yes it does, all the way upto 4k rips. YMMV depending on how large the bitrate of the files but for the majority of users it works great

      • Not sure what type of 4k content you are playing on Kodi but I noticed a very sluggish playback for 4k files. Similar to this review

        • please see my initial comment.. "Great box, have had mine since release. It has come a long way since it first came out with several firmware updates, dont rely on out of date reviews to make up your mind."
Theres various reasons why you may have issues.
          1) how are you playing the file?
          2) what version of kodi are you running?

1)I am streaming content over ac1300 wifi from a wired pc and have no issues with framerate.
2)I am running a fairly new nightly version of Lelia, not the stock standard kodi from the playstore, the nightly version has many bug fixes and enhanced support for this box. The playstore version is quite far behind these nightly builds.

        • +1

@garvani: Thanks will have a look at exploring nightly builds. Always happy to be proven wrong for the greater good :)

    • No idea but my $30 S905 runs Kodi just fine (on openelec) so I don't see why not as this is an upgraded unit compared to my cheapo one.

    • I bought one in the last deal because people answered my question with 'yes' when I asked :)
Kodi on the Raspberry Pi3 struggles with high-profile x264

      • Can you define high profile? My pi2 works flawlessly with anything I throw at it. Largest x264 I have is about 25gb.

It's a known issue, the rPI GPU doesn't handle this, so it falls back to the CPU.
A lot of anime rips are in this format to preserve color gradients. It causes a lot of controversy in the anime community because low-end devices can't play them properly.

And yeah, the rPI2 can play >25GB 8-bit x264 without any issues at all.

        • @idonotknowwhy:
Fair enough. Didn't know it couldn't handle 10 bit stuff. The only other issue I had was with mpeg2 decoding which I sorted out by buying the license key.

        • @Piranha2004: I did the same thing for mpeg2

    • Does anyone use Kodi other than streaming movies/tv shows? (Ie. their own content which it's meant for).

And do you think they'll somehow be able to ban/sue people who use Kodi & it's streaming apps?

      • You could no more get into trouble for using kodi, than using "windows media player" or a smart-TV with x264/mkv support.
Those add-ons like exodus could certainly be blocked in Australia (albeit easy to circumvent) and don't forget that we retain internet metadata here for 2 years.
I'm guessing most informed people using these add-ons would be using a VPN

      • Yes I use it to watch live sports. Mainly cricket and f1 on sky sports

        • What stream do u use and is it good reliable less buffer intensive streams ??

    • I have another box with the same chipset. It has occasional skip frame with certain movies when using kodi in android. However, it was all smooth out when I have flashed it to Libreelec, but I have loss android which I do not have any use for.

  • I haven't looked much into these box's. Can someone explain why they are so popular on ozb? What do they offer that the chromecast doesn't?

    • +3

This box you could use as a KODI box or for torrent downloading or as media server or NAS etc etc. Basically an android box is quite flexible as compared to a Chromecast and there are unlimited possibilities when it comes to media and entertainment.

      • oh thanks/ More useful than I expected it to be. :)
Although I have a seedbox for torrents.

        • Do people still torrent :)

        • @stussy:
Well I mainly do it for work/traineeship stuff. E.g. linux distros

        • @stussy: yup, when you can't it on usenet :)

        • +1

          @stussy:

What do people do if they dont torrent anymore? What am I missing out on

        • @matt90:

          First rule of Usenet..

        • -1

          @matt90:

I have totally forgotten how to torrent after grabbing a android box pretty much stream it all these days

        • @Originality: Why not just get it from mirror sites? It's not any faster, is it?

        • @flaminglemon:
Cheaper to download it on the seedbox and transfer it over when I have the time.
I sometimes download large files (40gb+) then when Im home from work I transfer them over.
I can't afford to have my computer running all day while I am at work as I am not earning much

        • @Originality: I never thought about that! There have been times when I've left my PC on all day over a few days, but never once thought about the cost. Good to know.

    • +1

Wanted to know myself too since I've not used either but want to get one so I did a bit of reading.
Basic idea is they're more or less the same. Android TV is just geared more towards the Smart TV UI and experience. So it has the native apps built for the Smart TV like functionality, the remote, voice control etc. It also has Google Cast as a fallback which works like Chromecast does in case there's no native Android TV app.
Android TV was originally ahead of the game in quality and 4K support but the newest Chromecast brings that back to equal. Supposedly streaming services will push higher quality to Android TV earlier, while Chromecast tends to test your network speed a bit longer before hopping into HQ. But that was only in one article.

      • +1

Well I guess I dont really NEED to rush out and buy one of these boxes then. As I own a chromecast. Still need to get a nice tv though :p
Plus all I'll use it for is netflix.

    • +2

It runs stock Google TV with access to the Play Store, so you can install Kodi/Plex/Netflix etc straight from there without any fluffing about. Comes with a great bluetooth remote too.

With a chromecast you need something to cast media from. With this you just pick up the remote and use it with a nice GUI on your tv.

    • +1

I have just upgraded to one today after using an old WDTV for years. This has downloadable apps like Youtube and Netflix, as well as other interesting ones like an Anime Netflix-esque thing and a music video one, and allows you to plug storage straight into it, you can also cast to it. Chromecast only lets you stream stuff to it which I don't love.

I'm loving it to bits, I never thought I'd let go of the old WDTV but it was getting a bit buggy in it's old age and this one is so much faster with more options. I will miss my WDTV's UI though, I loved that. Probably wont use the Chromecast at all now.

      • +1

Love the WDTV too, but reaching end of life now struggling with x265 HD and soo slow to boot.

Maybe someone could do a Kodi WDTV skin

  • Code doesn't work anymore, says "The coupon has been used!"

    • Apparently it's because i'm on the same external IP as someone whose used it. Worked fine on a different connection.

It was $68 AUD posted using this method https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/296477

    • Now that this has expired, AliExpress offers a £7.50 signup bonus instead? Is that by using a referral?

Can I also get 7% from cashrewards

      • -1

Is that by using a referral?

You get $7.50 signup bonus and then 7.8% cashback . But you would have to go through topcashback UK

      • Got mine today from last deal also. Did come with AU adapter.

    • I'm still waiting for mine too. I don't think it's in Switzerland, they are just using SwissPost?

    Hi,

Does anyone know if tvbox cut USB power on standby and will USB support external drive being only 2A 5v?

I bought other brand tvbox but found that power to USB came directly from power supply and never been cut off. It caused spin of external HDD all the time.

  • Got mine yesterday from previous deal.
Easy to setup through my Android phone.
So far I like it. Wacked Kodi on it last night and had it setup easily.

Found it much snappier than the nexbox I have.
The remote is actually usable too.

    • -1

Can you see if it gets all content from exodus? I've found some of these boxes for whatever reason don't find all the content.
If you have exodus setup can you do a search for Pokemon Season 1 and see if it finds it?

      • I'll try tonight mate.
Used Exodus on the nexbox and pretty much anything I searched for came up.

Only did a quick test last night but the couple of things I searched for were found.

        • Thanks mate

        • @Nazz61:
          Just did a search mate.
          Pokemon season 1 returned nothing

Typing Pokemon only returned a few hits
          Such as

          Pokemon sun and moon
          Pokemon
          Pokemon Chronicles

        • @bbourizk: damn thanks mate. this seems to suffer the same problem. If I do a search on my microserver I get all seasons.

        • @Nazz61:

Might be late but i'm using an Android box with Kodi and latest Exodus. Searched pokemon in exodus and the same showed up. There is season 1 after you hit enter after the search.

      • What's Exodus? I feel I've heard that name flying around.

        • Basically lets you stream stuff…You can work out the rest :)

  • I need to get on this asap. I have Telstra Roku box and its rubbish! Cant stream anything to it needs to be specific formats etc.

  • +1

Please read my comment in the thread here before purchasing anything from these guys.. you may not get the item and lose your money ! I just did !

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/295239#comment-4507022

    • That's a shame mate. So far having bought many things. Everything has turned up within 3-4 weeks.

      • Well I took it up with the seller, PayPal, auspost, ANZ (cashback) and finally ACCC without success. These guys are not even registered in Australia ! Any ideas??

        • They are not based in Australia so ACCC wont be of any help.
          What did paypal Say?
The seller didn't respond?…The couple of emails I've sent regarding changing an order have been answered in a couple of days.

I actually have an order for some wall chargers which were back ordered and last week got an email asking if I wanted a refund as they don't have a time estimate on when they'll get them in stock.

  • Coupon doesn't seem to work anymore. Any one had luck?

    • +3

Problem exists between keyboard and chair

    • Seems like you need to be logged in for it to work

    • Update: Website must track IP addresses as it was saying coupon had been used (workmate bought one earlier). Used an external connection and went through fine.

  • -3

20%MiBox? Would love 20% of your box ;)

  • How does this compare to the Xioami mi box 6

  • I just cast from 123movies from phone or PC to my Chromecast, which is pretty good already. Can these machines watch TVB or any other asian channels like those TVpads? Mum's TVpad2 is dead, needs a new DNS to keep watching. I'll get this if it does what the TVpad does.

    • I thought TVPad2 was officially dead. Only TVPad 3 or was it 4 that still currently works.

      • Yeh I did say it was dead. Can this act like a TVpad?

  • I got mine with their previous deal yesterday. Mine didn't come with a wall converting adapter but I have a few of those so it wasn't a problem.

However, I am unable to add any keyboard to it via Bluetooth. Have tried 2 Apple wireless keyboards as well as a small foldable keyboard and an iCade. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

  • Also noticed that there is significant lag when playing emulators using this. So just be aware of that..

    • Which console?
I was having the same issue playing dreamcast on my tablet with a PS4 controller via Bluetooth on a flight.
When I switch off Bluetooth and used a wired controller, the lag went away.

      • Have only tried nes.emu and another snes app. I also tried with a wireless controller and whilst it improved, was still bordering on unplayable in super Mario.

I did change the refresh rate settings in those emulators to suit my tv but even then it wasn't perfect.

        • Oh something weird is going on there. NES emulators can run on potatoes.
When you said you were having lag in emulators, I was expecting N64 or psp.
I'll post my progress here when mine arrives

      • C'mon Deb

  • The only real streaming I do a LOT is YouTube.

Is this suitable? If so I can turn off my HTPC occasionally and save some power.

    • +1

yes, does youtube well, also will play 4k youtube if your internet can handle it. I queue youtube videos from my phone and they play on the tv, can also skip tracks, adjust volume etc etc from your phone.

    • +1

      Yes, no problems with youtube.

The whole point of these things is their ability to pretty much allow you to play back media from more or less anywhere, whether it be streamed or locally downloaded content. The difference between these and the cheap ones is the interface is 100% way more polished and usable.

    • thx

  • +2

Still waiting on mine from the previous deal - shipped 3/3.

Coming via Geneva which I found to be very odd.

  • Same here except mine shipped on the 26th of Feb, no idea of its current whereabouts.

  • Can somebody explain please why shall I buy this over the latest Chromecast? Thanks.

    • -1

If you have to ask, you're probably better off with a chromecast

      • +1

I should have worded my question differently - why would you bother with Mi Box over the ease of use with Chromecast? Apart from the obvious, which is the interface… although I find it easier to browse for something on my phone/tablet and then Chromecast it…

        • If all you want to do is cast from phone/tablet/pc then get the Chromecast and save some cash. The Mi Box does casting plus a whole lot more and if that has got you interested then start reading the comments here from your fellow ozbees and google what they have mentioned (Kodi/Exodus/Netflix/Youtube/4K/emulators/Plex) to find out about the extra stuff and whether you would find this extra stuff useful.
