        • This is a dedicated device so you don't have to cast from a device you're using for something else.

    • Chromecast is built in on the Xiaomi

As this box runs under Goggle, you have more opportunities to run apps including connection to a USB port or networked drives.

  • At the moment i am using a Roku 2 and Plex. Would the be an upgrade? Also everyone is talking about Kodi but i assume i can get Plex from the play store for this box?

    • You can!

  • Got one thanks op

  • +2

Only downside for me is no LAN port, only WiFi.

    • +Lack of USB ports. The cheap $45 box has 4 USB ports are better value.

    • agreed… on other models it could run RJ45 LAN via USB but "apparently" this version doesn't support it.

      • I've read comments of people using a USB dongle

    • It can be used on LAN with a USB to Ethernet adapter. You would then need to use any other peripherals via Bluetooth (if possible).

  • An adapter, what a pain.

  • Hi guys, how or where do i need to type the discount code? I had tried going into the site but no luck in locating the section where i can put the "20%MiBox" to access the above mentioned AUD price. Thanks in advance!

    • Click add to cart. Then view cart and you will see it on the right hand side of the page.

      • Thank you! Was on mobile site/page, hence i couldnt see the coupon box. Unfortunately, membership is required to access the code when I typed it in :(

  • -1

TBH these are a bit outdated compared to the S912 Octa-core 3gb RAM, 32gb ROM models shipping out for lower prices than this atm.
They all use the same chipsets and kodi installs so the "this is better quality" argument is out the window :D

    • Outdated, maybe.
Better than the mi box? No.

That is why the s912 models are cheaper and why these boxes get many many good reviews.

In the future, the s912 may work better, but it doesn't now and there is no timreframe to fix it. Given the short use-by date on technology, if I get 2 years from this box then I will be happy and move on to the next thing.

  • Thanks OP, just put order in and used CR.

Shipping estimate is 7-25 days, hopefully it's on the lower end of the estimate :)

  • We have an AppleTV4 and mainly uses it for Netflix as the Netflix app on our sony smartTV crashes every now and then.

Keen on the Exodus app on the Android box but wondering if the 1080p FHD streaming quality is good? i.e. it is the same (if not better) than what u can get from netflix?

    • +1

Yes, you can stream at comparable quality. One thing it lacks is the automatic fallback to 720p and 480p when your connection is congested. It'll just keep buffering in these cases, until you stop and choose a 720p stream manually

      • Thanks for that.

  • Has anyone managed to get Gamecube emulation working on this with the Dolphin emulator?

The app isn't really optimised for the OS and I can't get a game to work without it crashing. Need help!

    • I asked the dolphin devs last week.
They said that the only arm device playing close to full speed is the nvidia shield. And that's just a few games at "almost" full speed.

They specifically said that there's no chance with this.

Imo, the best this will do is dreamcaat and maybe some psp.

I'm looking forward to the day when I can play double-dash at full speed on an arm tablet!

      • cheers for the heads up! disappointing though, the shield is quite a bump up in price :( I tried the dolphin emulator on my mac and unexpectedly, it worked an absolute treat. was really hoping the mi box would come through. need to figure out another way to bring gamecube emulation games to the tv without relying on the mac.

        agreed on the double-dash front!

  • Decent deal

  • I just bought a Q box after doing much research and struggling to decide. Though this is $10 cheaper and similar specs. I think I'll be happy with the Q box which comes jailbroken and ready to roll. Just happy I learnt about the s912 and was able to avoid it. Also Aus stock so I don't have to wait months. Many many options to pick from. This is a good price for the Xiomi MI Box.

  • Can anybody confirm that this model has the IR receiver?

    • +1

No IR, from my memory it is BT or Wireless.

    • +1

The box has an IR receiver, the remote it comes with is bluetooth. I just setup my Harmony Hub to connect via bluetooth instead of IR (Set it up as an Asus Android TV) it now never misses a command, responds much faster and I have it hidden behind my TV.

      • OK thanks. I've read that the IR is an "undocumented" feature on some (maybe all?) models

  • Had one of these briefly before it broke and was returned.

Now went for a cheaper 905x box, $55 (or $35 in the recent eBay sale!), same base hardware I believe
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-M8S-II-Smart-TV-Box-2GB-16GB…
Came "Fully Loaded" with Kodi+Exodus, etc although wasnt advertised as such

The MiBox does have a slicker interface, voice search and WiFi AC support.

Happy with the cheaper version, has a couple of advantages, wired LAN port and this model has 16Gb ROM, it doesn't support wireless AC, so may not be so good for HD+ streaming over Wifi and 1/2 the cost. It also paired with my ipega bluetooth gamepad, which the MiBox wouldnt.

Cant comment on 4K, but HD works well

no Lan port, no Optical port, no deal! :|

    • No LAN - Right
      No Optical - Wrong.

      • wheres the optical port on it?
i dont see it in the photos or spec descrption

        • Pls have a read at my comment below.

        • you need something similar

          Toslink-Optical-Female-to-3-5mm-Male

        • @gr8m8sam:

ah ok. but technically it doesnt have an optical port?
you'd have to buy this adapter on top.

          M8s or T95z, has everything.

        • @b00tyman: Haha. Going by your technical definition. New MacPro technically has nothing but USB-C ;)

        • @gr8m8sam:

          yeah man!
im sure apple throws in adapters!

i doubt this would come with it.

  • HOw does this compares against T95z? Specs seems better but not sure on performance and user experience… any comments please

    • +1

Ive used a T95Z and its actually quite good with the specs, powerful 912S, 2G Ram, boots very fast too, no lag whatsoever

      • thanks for your feedback, I'm very new to this technology coming from old style apple TV. There's a lot of hipe on the Mi but from specs point of view looks like T95Z is better as it has WAN, Optical audio and two USB on and 16GB ROM. Both are around the same price point.. interested to know which will work without causing too much trouble…

  • -1

How good are the HD streams via kodi? As good as netflix 1080i?

    • If you're talking about Exodus, you can stream at "netflix-quality" 1080p.

If your internet connection is congested, Netflix falls back to 720p or 480p to keep the stream going, Exodus does not. It will just keep buffering until you manually stop, and choose a 720p/480p stream.

  • I was about to order it… and then realised I have this too. Ordered during black Friday deals, payed around 100ish ozy. Had a play for a short while till new shield Tv rocked up (pre-ordered) in mid Jan.
Mi Box is a great little box. Absolute bang for the bucks. Tried SPMC (16.5-5), NETFLIX, Youtube over wifi and Ethernet (USB>Ethernet dongle) all worked flawlessly. Did not try any games though. And the little remote is fantastic (not as good and Fire TV remote but close). Includes a meter long HDMI cable too – handy. Does not include battery for the remote, not a biggy if you have a collection of eneloops. I think it does not support adb over network (not a big fan of ES explorer lately) unlike Fire and Shield. Also note it has optical port – 3.5mm and optical dual personality port. You need to have an adapter to use the optical part.
After all this; it is now collecting dust in the box “as new”- because shield does everything better. Time to use my ebay seller account I think ;)

  • It seems these boxes have the issue of not picking up all content on exodus. Just an FYI.

  • Does anyone know if Foxtel Play or the Foxtel Go app for Foxtel Play works on this?

  • Thanks. I've beem keen to get one for the kids

  • Can anyone tell me whether I can use one of these boxes to watch my ripped DVDs stored on a NAS? I have many of my kids' dvds stored as either ISO files or in a DVD folder structure. Currently using a WDTV Live, which I find quite clunky.
Could this Mi box be an upgrade?

    • +1

Yep, you certainly can with kodi.
At the very least, it'll list the dvds and play them. You might need to rename some folders to get them to show up in the library (with the dvd cover, description, genre, etc) as I've never tried this, I store my dvd backups compressed an deinterlaced.

Blueray might be a challenge over wifi on this thing depending on your network as it would require more bandwidth.

  • Does anyone know when the code expires?

    • -3

I'm new to this TV box thing but based on my research, there is no set expiry on them but due to legal reason any illegal sites and their illegal/unlawful activity could be stopped anytime.

      • I think you may be a little confused in my question. I was asking about the 20% code expiry.

Also the devices themselves are not illegal, that content that can be added to them for that matter can be illegal

    • I don't know, my college told me about it.
I don't want to ask them in case they expire it lol.

  • I have the logitech MK400 - not sure if that would be good for this. Any recommendation on a good keyboard remote for these boxes please?

    • +1

I don't have this box but I would've thought the Logitech K400R/K400+ would be ideal for this type of use. I use it with Raspberry Pi3 with Kodi. But maybe if you don't want to use up the USB port get a bluetooth keyboard/touchpad instead.

  • Got one. Thanks OP
My first android box after being sick of the Samsung smart tv interface. Hope this is better and solves the woes.

  • Mine just arrived from the previous deal even though tracking still says it's in Switzerland.
It took about 3 weeks to arrive, very nicely packed. I'll give it a try tonight.

    • How did you go?

Defiantly the global/international version? I believe it was orange packaging?

      • +1

It's light-brown packaging. Certainly in English, I think it's for Singapore as the power-brick looks like it and the warranty card is for Singapore.

It appears to have an IR port on the front as I've read somewhere on line (even though it's not documented).

I installed Kodi from the play store and connects to my NAS and plays content without issues.

Remote didn't come with any batteries, but that's not an issue for most ozbargainers: http://imgur.com/a/jrbxG
HDMI CEC works so I can just use my TV remote anyway.

        I haven't tried side-loading any emulators yet.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of this device, the only other Xiaomi thing I own is a set of pistons from an ozbargain deal, which sound terrible.

        • What's the model number?

I'm trying to work out if there is a difference between the "international" and "global" versions

        • @Mollison92: MDZ-16-AB

  • Doesn't come with an Australian plug… Which plug should I purchase so I don't need an adapter?

    • Honestly, I'd just get an adapter, rather than using a 3rd party charger.
My rPI's are more stable with brand-name chargers vs knock-offs with the same 'specs'

But if you insist, the device takes 5.2V, 2.1A input.

  • Can anyone know if this box will pass through HD audio LIKE MASTER DTS or just LPCM? how about pass through HD audio throu KODI? I can't get KODI worked on my SONY smart TV to pass through any DTS oR DD?
    Any ideas ?

    Thanks

    • IT can certainly pass-through DTS and Dolby.
I don't use "HD Audio" as I'm on the "it's a placebo" side of the debate, so I can't comment there.

  • has anyone received their box yet?

    • Not yet, tracking 'Left Origin Border' on 20/03. I'm assuming this could take awhile…

      • Yeah i've been sitting on the following since the 22nd

  • +1

20%MiBox has expired but 20MiBox still works.

  • Still waiting for mine. Last update was on 22/3/17 and it was in Switzerland.

  • I'm sitting at 'Departed Geneva' on 31/3. I believe the estimated delivery time from Switzerland is 9-15 days, according to the Swiss Post half of Asendia. I'm not sure how much AusPost faffing around will add to that though.

Edited to add: 9-15 business days… hooray!

  • +1

    Ordered on the 15th

Still hasn't arrived to metro Melbourne :(

    • I ordered on the 15th too. Still no sign in Newcastle.

Okay glad I'm not alone 😊

Fingers crossed for it coming this week!

        • +1

I think we will be lucky if it comes this month

        • This is my first order with them, is the shipping really that slow?

        • +1

@Uncle Bert: its normally slow but this is much slower than usual.

  • +2

    Mine arrived today. :)

    • +1

Did the tracking update at all once nearby?

      • I'm curious too.

        • Mine looks pretty much the same as well.

  • Hey guys just confirming I've received mine now.

Unfortunately it's not an Australian power adapter 🌚

    • Did yours track as leaving Switzerland? Mine is still listed as being there, and has done for around a month.

      • Yeah that's what it was tracking as the whole time

  • It's been so long I forgot why I bought this thing….

    • Do we have any recourse if they aren't here in the next week or so?

  • I've just received my oder, ordered March 19th. Shipment status hasnt changed from Genève since April 4th. Plug is a USA plug.

  • Yeah, mine took quite a while to arrive, and I'd forgotten about it during that time.
Par for the course with buying cheap stuff from China.
Forgot to mention it's not an Aussie plug, I probably should have put that in the description, my bad.

  • US plug beats Chinese plug. Pins can be twisted to plug direct to aus outlet where chinese round pin plug needs an adaptor.
