Some of the cheaper flights you've marked aren't coming up when I click on the search link… maybe sold out?

    • Same here; searching from syd, your 1st eg of dates is $380

      • I suspect may have sold out but some of the other dates are still coming up to $299. After you search, at the bottom of the page, it also includes other dates around your search dates that also are cheap. Get FC to price beat and further discounts with GC.

        • there are no Sydney to Honolulu Flights $299 Return. " further discounts with GC" please explain?

Apologies, found Dep30 Jan Rtn 9Feb $272! With Expedia

        • @Brissy1:

When I posted the links some were $299, I don't know now.

Some members here sell FC GCs cheaper.

FYI I am not assocated with IWTF and I didn't mark those dates, they were marked by them and I just copied.

        • @tajid:

Oops you beat me, you can type faster!, apology above. Still, what's "GC"…don't want to miss out on anything

        • @Brissy1: hahah gift cards

    What ?! that's crazy !.

If you travel with just carry-on, catch THE BUS into Waikiki for $2.50

    • +2

Never been to Hawaii, is it expensive? Say compared to staying in the Whitsundays?

      • Can be as cheap or expensive as you want.

      • +2

Not expensive. You can get accom in Waikiki for $150 a night for 3 star. Search via CheapTickets with their 16% of promo codes. However if you want luxury you can blow $300/$400 a night on something nice.

We spend most our time at some of the hidden diamond head beaches. We pretty much only spent money on food and bike hire.

Go once a year best place on earth.

        • +2

From experience, cheap hotels don't exist for family of 4.

        • Do you need to rent a car to travel around or pt is good?

        • @Yeliboy:

You can get most everywhere on Public Transport, on Oahu that is.

        • +1

          $150 a night is expensive

        • I live near Sunshine Coast. What's the difference?

        • +1

@Yeliboy: If your planning on just staying on Oahu you can drive around the island in a good day, or do a full day tour where they will take you to pearl harbour etc.

If its your first time just hire a car for 3 or 4 days and drive up to north shore, visit dole pineapple etc at your own time and pace.

Like someone else said, Hawaii is beautiful. Waikiki is a bit like surfers paradise run by asians but the rest of it is worth seeing.

        • @zealmax:

you should try family of 5.

        • @slikguy: Who do you hide in the suite case when you are checking in?

        • @zealmax: bahahaha never tried that

      • +1

I think it's comparative in cost. Accommodation can be expensive but also you can try to avoid the hotels and go for an unserviced condo. It's not cheap like as in Thailand though and us inflation has taken hold a bit in the last 5 years.

        http://www.waikikibeachrentals.com/mindex.jsp

You can tear though cash easily though if you allow it. We went September last year

        My tips
        Condo instead of hotel
        Six packs of Sierra Nevada
Only hire cars for the day instead of multiple days.
Eat at the food court at ala Moana. nicer than most restaurants…

        • Ala Moana also has the Shirokiya Asian food court in the bottom carpark opposite the new location for the Foodlands - cheap food and cheap beer!

      • +2

I went there this time (week) last year - Hawaii is definitely one of the most expensive places I've traveled to - definitely more expensive than staying at Palm Cove in Cairns. The price of fruit is insane if you tend to eat fruit. I remember paying what worked out to be AUD6.70 for a cinnamon scroll at Ala Moana centre. But if you like ritzy shopping areas with big/expensive brands, the main strip at Waikiki is certainly for you.

    • The Bus had a few interesting characters on it :D

    • Probably a nicer ride than Jetstar

      • +13

I flew to Hawaii on Jetstar last year and the flight was great. Brand new plane, decent amount of leg room and awesome staff. Just pack some sandwiches and a laptop/tablet with some movies on it and you're sorted.

I really don't understand why people complain about flights so much - you're getting to and from Hawaii for under a few hundred bucks.

I sit in an office chair and work for 8+ hours a day. I can sit in a plane seat and watch movies for 9 hours no problem.

      • any flight you can walk away from is a great flight in my books

A mate and I went to Hawaii for a few weeks last year.

We didn't like Waikiki at all. Basically like the Gold Coast in terms of tourists but the beach is 10 times worse than any on the GC. Waves don't break on the beach and when you get 5 metres out to sea it's volcanic rock (not sand) under your feet. So you're pretty much left to swim in the man-made lagoon with a million other people.

I'd recommend staying in Waikiki/Honolulu for a night or two max. Climb Diamond Head and DEFINITELY climb Koko Head then head to Maui.

We flew to Maui and spent most of out time there. Maui is less touristy and has a much more authentic Hawaii feel compared to Oahu (which is basically just the Gold Coast). I'd recommend hiring a car here, there's loads of awesome drives and things to see.

Depending on what sort of accommodation you're after, I'd recommend the Banana Bungalow (a backpackers) on Maui. Awesome atmosphere, great facilities. They also do different, free tours every day (just tip your mini-van driver $10-20 at the end of the day). The tours last 6-8 hours and go to loads of different places all over the island. Great way to see the island and meet cool people.

      • I agree with this but also remember it depends on the kind of holiday you want. I mean you can go to some secluded beaches on Oahu and other nice spots and have similar experiences. We did the Big Island (Hawaii) and it is very different from oahu. Also depends on the weather, theres stuff to do in Waikiki if the weather turns bad on you but on some of the secluded places on the other islands your stuck a little. I think I could fill a week on Oahu with some relaxing included. Depends if your travelling with kids and don't want to do the inter island flight also.

    • I read that the bus only allows bags that can fit in the space under the seat. How big is this space? Will it accommodate a carry-on suitcase?
Also, is the service punctual? Thanks in advance for sharing!

      • +1

Carry on compliant is fine. Driver gets shirty with people trying to drag on full size luggage on though.

Buses run to time in my experience. Was an eye opener too through some of the less well off areas.

        • Thanks mate, I travel with carry-on only.so shouldn't have a problem. Cheers

I'd love to holiday in Hawaii… but news like this really wants me to reconsider trips to the USA!

    • +2

did we read different articles? your link indicates she carried a personal diary with her that was searched and information within detailed her plans to illegally immigrate… what do you think will happen to someone arriving into Australia or even New Zealand doing the same?

    • Crap like this happens at airports all around the world. Not just the USA.

    • you would get the exact same treatment the world over under the circumstances she was in. she had so many red flags for immigration it wasn't funny. Trying to Stay for the FULL length of your visa within a day or two. quit job, diary items that would arouse suspicion and had a boyfriend that was local. Try having the same as a foreigner and getting into Australia!

  • Cheap flights to Hawaii during winter, remember to bring your thermal swimming clothes.

Nah, average temps around 23C in February. Nice escape from Melbourne anyway, where it could be 40C.

      According to http://www.holiday-weather.com/hawaii/averages/february/,

Temperatures are still very welcoming in February. Average temperatures are usually a very beautiful 23°C throughout the month. And though this is equal to the coldest month of the year in Hawaii, it is still a far cry from the winter climate back in the UK.

On average, temperatures will reach highs of 26°C during the second month of the year. And even at night, the average lows are unlikely to fall below 20°C. This ensures the consistently warm climate of the Hawaiian region remains uninterrupted.

In recorded history, the temperature has never fallen below 13°C in Hawaii in February. Although temperatures did hit a high of 32°C in February 1991.

Sea temperatures will usually take a little dip in February and fall to their coolest level throughout the year. However at 24°C, no one is going to want to resist. This slight cooling of the sea also comes with bigger waves and more challenging surf, ensuring no one can stay out of the water.

An average of eight hours of daily sunshine complete a very pretty picture for anyone visiting Hawaii in February. Though there can be some rain, the warmth and beauty of the island will more than make up for a few wet patches.

      • One of the days I was in Waikiki it was raining a decent amount and dropped to below 18C. It was still plenty pleasant out in the ocean.

Some warnings about their booking system.

Keep an eye on the price of the segments. I selected a $0 return flight first. Then I selected a departing flight. After choosing my departing flight, the system had changed the return flight cost from $0 to $330. No warning that the $0 flight had sold; they just jacked it up. So, be careful of that.

Next, you must to pay more than the starting price. They charge people to have a seat anywhere on the plane. Minimum of $9 per international flight and $5 per domestic.

Also, at the very end, they will add in a $1 charge per person. They say they are collecting for Star Kids charity (who is that? do they own that?) and automatically added in that you would like to donate a dollar. You can remove that selection. (They'll take the kudos AND the tax deduction for YOUR money :S)

Paypal and credit card attract extra fees too. (I think Jetstar Mastercard may be the only free payment option)

    • Again, all solved with Flight Centre price beat.

    • +1

Poli is also a free option.

Took me three tries to get a 0 dollar return, you gotta be quick! Just checked and our returns are now over $300, so all up almost doubled. No matter because the insane prices - $330 return - these were irresistible but at $600 we would have done something else.

We bought Jetstar membership, prices for all tickets were cheaper after buying membership than buying the tickets alone.

Kudos to the OP for the post. Love this site.

  • Any chance of doing a working holiday in Hawaii?

    • +1

haha my gf just said why don't you 'work from home' from hawaii.. I wish….

  • +1

I got return flights from adl for $400 in feb

  • I thought Jetstar stopped going to Honolulu from Bris?

    • I think it's via Sydney. Bit of a Hassle really the best thing about going was the good flight time one flight trip.

  • -1

I'd be interested to see what the ACTUAL fare is after you factor in all of Jetstar's "extras"… like oh I don't know, checking some luggage, paying with a credit card and paying online booking fees and taxes, and maybe even a prebooked craptastic meal.

Oh, and good luck travelling with anyone. If you want a seat next to a family member, that's extra too :(.

Don't fall for the advertised rate folks, it's rarely that when you bother to enter all your details.

  • +1

I'm sitting in my condo at Kaanapali Beach, Maui typing this thanks to the last Jetstar deal. Thanks Ozbargain.

My thoughts on Hawaii…I love this place!

We have just arrived in Maui after 5 days in Waikiki at the Hilton Village, have a week in Maui and then back to a Waikiki condo for 3 days.

Prior to arrival I was told that "Waikiki is the GC on steroids and to get out of there straight away". However our family experience was wonderful. We did no sight-seeing or shopping and spent all of our days between the beach, pools, lagoon and restaurants. Waikiki beach was postcard perfect with beautiful blue water and great water temp. The beach is a true water playground and I was lucky to surf some nice waves during my stay alongside the catamarans, snorkel groups, SUP's, outrigger canoes and sailing boats.

  • Sweet deal! Thanks!

  • +1

I don't know about this site, I have seen other "cheap" offers listed here before for IWTF here on Ozbargain. But whenever I check there are never any available, just like this Hawaii deal. Maybe they are genuine? But have such a small amount of flights for sale you can never get them?
