  • ANZ got rid of ameX right?

    • +2

Looks to be a Visa card.

No annual fees for first year but after that - ouch. I'm assuming most people would use it for 10-11 months then drop the account.

    • oh what?! that makes this much less attractive…

    • yup, get on the amex 100k points deal (explorer card)
ANZ dumping amex meant i just went straight over to them

      • oooh which one is this? do you have the link?

      • If this is $0 annual fee, then this deserves its own deal. Please share.

        • It's not $0 fee. $395 Fee and $400 travel credit to offset it.

        • -3

$395 fee, $400 travel credit, essentially free, or making $5!

        • @banzini:

Thanks. I have no experience with using Travel credit or booking with AMEX travel. Are they reasonable value?

        • @chrislaya: You can mess around with a few key dates / hotels / flights here to compare them https://travel.americanexpress.com.au/travel/arc.cfm?tab=h

I haven't used my $400 so can't really speak from experience yet! It seems pretty competitive though.

        • +1

          @banzini:

Hmmm not bad! For example (Grace Hotel), AMEX travel lists $242 but Expedia says $380. Might take the plunge! Looks like AMEX points to Qantas points is converted as 1:0.75 (with an Explorer card) so 100,000 AMEX is 75,000 Qantas.

        • @chrislaya: Yep same with Velocity as well, 100k AMEX = 75k velocity (but a bonus 15% transfer on Velocity until end of May) = 86,250 velocity.

Don't forget to use the referral generator on ozbargain when you sign up as listed on this page https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/299466

          Cheers

        • @banzini:

Where is the bonus transfer deal? I transferred 120k points to Velocity from AMEX Gateway today. Wondering whether I will get the bonus points? If so then I'll transfer the rest to.

        • @chrislaya: I just got the AMEX Explorer with 100k points thinking I could xfer into QFF, and it looks like you cant…Some AMEX cards can xfer into Q but not the explorer (the black one..)

        • lol @ the negs

        • @petervk: Thanks for the reply!

        • @banzini: I know. People negging without much thinking.

  • +2

I just cancelled my black card a few weeks ago, have to wait 12 months before becoming eligible again.

    • Likewise. Its in my reminders for next year :).

  • Minimum salary?

    • +1

      75k I think

      • Is there any wiggle room on this at all? I'm on a "78K package" (73ish +super) and was hoping to somehow argue I was earning the minimum required.

        • +32

          you have my approval

        • +26

          @WillisAU: and my axe

        • +2

One does not simply "wiggle" into ANZ.

        • @Yarkin:

          Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
          Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
          Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
          Just a little bit

        • If you have any other form of income (e.g. dividends, or interest) they will take it into account - but you'd need to provide evidence of them.

  • +1

*Not available in conjunction with other offers, packages or promotions, or when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Frequent Flyer, ANZ Frequent Flyer Gold, ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card within the previous twelve months.

Based on this, you would still be eligible if you hold the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures, correct?

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

How strict does ANZ hold on to this T&C from experience?

      • Completely strictly. People have been denied within a week or so - though they will tell you the cut-off date.

        • I can't remember the approximate date when I closed my previous ANZ card account. If I call them, would they be able to tell me?

        • So if you apply under 12 months they will reject your application all together?

or will you get the card but need to pay the full annual fee without any perks? This is what Amex do.

Or can you get some perks? Ie the status credits with a Qantas booking before September?

        • @tunzafun001:

This I'd like to know- can I apply for the offer and find out if the 12 month rule applies to me? Forgot to note when I closed it last year

  • Minimum 75k income. I'm only at 60k. :(

Anyone know if they make exceptions?

    • +11

I doubt they'd have a minimum if they were going to make exceptions.

    • +8

Exception for what? Do you have something else to offer compared to another 60K earner? e.g other sources of income, assets. good looks?

      • +2

hmm I've got a 5k car loan, but 20k in savings, I spend about 2k a month so I can definitely meet the 2.5k in 3 months requirement.

Also I have been told I look like I could be Brad Pitt's second cousin.

        • +14

Not generalizing but why would you pay interest on a car loan when you have 20K in savings. I know it's not a huge amount but at face value it's not a good move.

        • +5

          First cousin or no deal

        • @gimme:
It was a 10k loan nearly a year ago (first time i'd taken a loan) which I could have paid outright but parents told me to do a loan so I could build my credit score..

Didn't really know about credit score stuff (still dont know much) so I just did it because I trusted my parents

        • +1

          @Stingray:
yeah fair point…. must admit credit score calaculations are a bit of a mystery to me in Aus so doing what you did for a relatively small interest amount makes sense (maybe)

        • +2

          @gimme:
no point in having 20k sitting there when you're paying interest on 5k. pay it all off, have 15k savings. otherwise you'll end up paying something like 7k by the time you've paid interest on the 5k

        • @WillisAU:
Ok some background then. I had 30k in savings around this time last year and I wanted to buy my first car new. Car i wanted costed 29k, I planned on paying it off there but dad reminded me its good to have some money in the bank just in case of emergency (which I did use money for a holiday) so I decided on a 10k loan with westpac on 2 year term with an interest rate of 7.49% per annum (other banks were offering 8.49% back then so got a good deal with westpac).

Again i guess i'm only after building a good credit score. My parents did tell me about one of their friends having trouble getting a home loan because he payed everything off outright and never paid interest on anything.

        • +2

          @Stingray:
ok sounds, the opposite to my mortgage experience (having gotten 3 of them). I had to pay off my car which had about 10k owing, before getting approved. On another occasion i had to cancel a credit card to get approved. Maybe you should check your credit score online and see how you're going. Having a car loan sitting there getting slowly paid shouldnt be any better than paying it off in a lump sum after a couple of years.

        • @Stingray: Not sure if 'paying interest' is the bit that helps with credit rating but more the fact you are using credit (eg. you could have a CC with interest fee period and always pay it off). https://www.finder.com.au/5-ways-to-improve-your-credit-rati…

    • +2

Given the current general climate of "responsible lending" I doubt they'd make exceptions. I've been declined for cards with a far smaller difference and 10x as much savings.
You can try applying anyway, just that you might end up with the hassle of being magically approved for the Platinum (or whatever the lower one is) and have the hassle of having to telling them to not bother.

    • +5

You could try ANZ's other no annual fee for first year offers with 50000 or 25000 QFF points.
These will have lower annual income requirements…

      • Can you apply for these if you have held the black in the last 12 months?

        • +1

Rewards black yes, FF black no.

    • Lie

    • +2

No. I am on $74k and they called me and asked if I had any other sources of income. I should have just said I mow my neighbour's lawn for $1,000 a year. Or said Ozbargaining is my income. When I said no, they said no.

      • its funny i submitted my pay slips, My annual salary is listed $65k. but im on a long term higher duties allowance. its listed there (the allowance) my fortnightly salary was listed there etc. I submitted 4 payslips (instead of two) just in case they thought it was a one off. yet they still got it wrong.

        They declined me.

I had to call them back, and explain how fortnightly salary x 26 = $77k… :S
I THOUGHT THE POINT OF PAYSLIPS WAS THAT THEY WOULD CHECK YOUR PAY PROPERLY!!!

  • +1

Can anyone translate 75 status credit into what it may mean please ? :D

    • +9

Not much unfortunately, you need a least 200 status credits to get Silver. Which has minimal benefits, such as Qantas bag tags and priority check-in, which just means you don't queue. However for most flights from most terminals you can self check in and bag drop

      • awwww :( Thanks.

      • you need a min of 300 status credits. the beneift here is extra luggage on all flights

      • And do these status credits get cleared in the next year, or it can be accumulated?

        • +1

Cleared, unless you hit 7000 lifetime (in which case you become lifetime silver). Got to 280 credits last year, now on 0

        • +2

@dtc: Then it means it worth nothing if you are not a business frequent flyer..

      • This also priority boarding too right?

        • Unfortunately gold and above only :(

        • @vinnieg1983:

          Damn.

  • +1

Too many credit card request not good… Recent I found that it was deteriorated your credit history. I meet all the criteria and applied and also I had good credit history . They have rejected my application

    • ANZ rejected my application too. Nothing to do with credit history because I pay my credit card bills on time (only 1 credit card) and I have no loan. I spoke to ANZ and they said computer system has a number of conditions (that even staffs may not be aware) for customers to meet.

    • That's right. The maximum of each of your cards counts towards your debt. So if your credit card has a max of $10k, the bank sees that as a $10k debt, even if you owe nothing on it. If you're applying for a loan (car, house, etc) it's best to cancel all your credit cards first.

      • Must be something else. I've pretty much signed up to all available CC scam offers over the last year or two and have no issues.

    • This article agrees with you too "Shopping around for credit cards could lower your credit score and cost you money"
      http://www.smh.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/shopping-aro…

  • +1

Yeah how much in second year? Not sure about he whole tactic of swapping cards every year. It would be annoying and maybe hurt credit future apps?

    • +1

Forgot to cancel and hit with $425 fee, Rang to cancel and they only offered the waive half the fee, refunded $212. Just acceptable as most other card are around that much. The bonus points took about 5 months after activation and minimum spend.

Looking for another Visa card as the Citibank Signature have diluted their points to the extent of not worth using at all, lucky I don't pay any fees

      • you can ask then to refund the fee and cancel the card. That is what I did.

      • Oh wow, surprising to know it took 5 months to have bonus points reflected on Qantas account. That's a bit slow, compared to AMEX explorer where the 100K bonus points were given about 1 month after activation.

  • +1

It is said $0. Was it only annual fee? or inclusively with reward fee? Apparently with other banks, annual fee is already include reward fee (if the card is a reward card).

I just had an argument with ANZ due to my credit card with mentioned free annual fee if I have home loan with them. YES, it is free for annual fee, but not reward fee. What a joke. I did cancel and downgrade to non reward card.

    • +1

Now that is typical cynical BS bank behaviour!

  • If you have the income, this is an excellent offer IMHO. Set a diary reminder for 11 months to cancel. The 75 Qf SCs are great if one needs status with QF/Oneworld (status really helps in spending those QF points on flights & upgrades).

  • +1

Don't agree with their social engineering, pandering bs. Would never bank with ANZ.

    • pls elaborate.

      • +2

Wage gap myth adversiments, the extra money they pay female employee's just for being female… I'm not interested in supporting that sexist garbage personally.

        • +1

good to know…. its all about social engineering these days… agenda based social norms

  • Oh OzBargainnn!! i really want those Qantas points but fairly sure I'll get declined.

So far have Citi Signature, Amex Platinum edge & approved for the St George Signature
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305210

  • Any mention of Foreign Currency Transaction Fees? How is this compared to say, 28 Degrees or Bankwest Platinum? I tried searching but couldn't find it mentioned anywhere?

Also, will the 75 status credits be awarded only if I purchase through this card? What if i travel Qantas on tickets purchased through work?

  • Just off the phone with ANZ to cancel mine. They did try to entice me with some "temporary" bonus point per dollar spend, but I'll wait for the following year for the promo points and lounge passes.

  • +1

I cancelled a few months back on my black card, when I spoke to rentention I told the guy see you in 12 months.

  • Qantas is supposed to have a new card coming next month. Since this ANZ deal runs until 30 June, I'm going to hold out and see what Qantas offers to entice people

  • Man this offer is pretty poor compared to what I signed up to last year.

    Back then they gave:
    - 75k qantas points but also an AMEX with 3:1 points accumulation
    - 2x Qantas club invites per year
-free unlimited entry to AMEX club lounge at Sydney airport.

Now for the same $400+ yearly fee most of the above is gone except the qantas points?

No deal. In fact I'm cancelling mine shortly due to them removing the AMEX.

    • Nope, you still get the 2x Qantas Club lounge passes a year and AFAIK you can still access the AMEX club lounge till they withdraw the card officially on 4 Aug 17.

Not too sure about the point structure. But they have added the 75 status credits which was not available (when I applied in Dec 16)

    • If you're going to need credit for something in the near future, don't mess about applying for heaps of cards.

On GetCreditScore.com.au I was "very good" in February and now "average" in May after getting the amex platinum edge.

      • One card shouldnt place any ding on the score? Interesting.

      • Why does it matter? Keep applying. If it comes time to get a real loan cancel all cards and show you aren't in debt. Credit scores mean nothing.

      • Apparently getcreditscore is not always accurate, plus you get spammed after submitting all your details.

        • Probably, I ran it again last night and got "Good".

Also, I've always clicked "unsubscribe" as soon as it emails me the score and I've never got spammed.

  • +1

FYI - For those on the ANZ Breakfree package, you can replace the standard credit card with this one and the annual fee will be waived so long as you stay on the Breakfree Package.

I did have to negotiate this with my Bank manager as the card you're entitled to is the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum which only gives you 50,000 bonus points and no status points

Thanks OP and OZB. I changed over because of this post. +1 from me.

    • UPDATE: Even though ANZ will waive the annual fee on this card if you have the Breakfree Package, they will still charge you an annual fee of $110 for the rewards program (I know this as I've just been approved)

  • so i need to spend $2,500 to earn 75,000 bonus Qantas Points*?

    • Yes. Within 3 months.

    • Easily done if you have rego, insurance, council fees due etc… like myself (damn they come thick and fast)

In case you are wondering, use the AustPost pay option if possible so you can use your credit card instead us BPay bank transfer.

  • "*Not available in conjunction with other offers, packages or promotions, or when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Frequent Flyer, ANZ Frequent Flyer Gold, ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card within the previous twelve months."

I currently hold the ANZ Black Rewards card. If I close this card account, and apply for the ANZ FF Black - will I be eligible for the bonus points? It's not a transfer so I'm hoping yes.

The other question I had was, the current Black Rewards card is part of the Break Free package so I don't pay the annual fees on it (only the $55 rewards program fee which is a BS in my opinion). If all is successful with the above, I'm assuming I can should be able to substitute the new card to have its annual fee waived as part of the Break Free package?

    • That's pretty much what I did with the exception of having the Black Rewards card. I had the 'regular rewards card' and have applied to 'changed over to' this card.

Off topic but do you go by the same handle on OCAU?
