Is this available with the student discount?

    • Coupon not valid when I attempted to use student discount.

Code says "save 10% off your monthly plan fees on any 24 month phone plan or SIM Only plan", so I assume they've accurately excluded the tablet deals.

    • Student discount is for phone plans only. This is counted as a data plan.

Awesome price! I've got a 128gb iPad that I use to download Netflix shows for long flights etc. I'd definitely recommend getting the biggest capacity you can afford :)

    • +12

Not sure why I'd get negged for that comment..

    10GB!
Put SIM in your dual-SIM phone. Sell new tablet on eBay. Tether to your old iPad. Profit!

BTW, 32GB still holds many hours of Netflix.

    • True. I had over 60GB of Netflix but it was in a higher quality rather than standard quality.

    • 32GB is fine for Netflix offline. I am using a (failing) Nexus 10 that has 16GB and it's more than enough.

Each film is roughly 1GB as it isn't a 1080p download.

        • +8

What? We recently went on a trip with multiple international flights over 4 weeks. I downloaded everything before we left so I didn't have to worry about it while we were over there. Not too sure what you're getting at?

And how do you stream Netflix on a flight?

        • +12

          @T1OOO:

          Insults, really?

Yes, I've used internet in airports and most of the time they're rubbish. I wouldn't spend my time sitting in an airport downloading Netflix shows to watch on the plane when I had the capacity to do it at home.

Also, I said I watched Netflix on flights, NOT while at the destination?

What exactly do you do on a plane? Enjoy the scenery? I'm not sure if you're serious or not.

          @T1OOO:

Could you maybe fix up what you're trying to say so I can answer it? It doesn't make sense at all.

You're telling me you have an issue but then you tell me you couldn't care less. Yet you're still here going on about something like a child?

          @T1OOO:

You're delusional. You should try and make sense when you attack someone for an opinion.

Also, if you want to get technical, 60GB doesn't mean 60 hours… But anyway, carry on.

        • Discussion is fine but please do so while remaining respectful. See my post

        • +1

@T1OOO: Cheer up. I wouldn't rely on streaming Netflix while on a flight. Also I have a long flight coming up flying to UK, choices while flying sounds alright to me.

        • +13

@T1OOO: You need to upgrade to the T2000 model…. Apparently that model has actually traveled before

    • not sure they check but it seems tethering doesn't get you the music or tv streaming. not sure how they check if you tether or not.

    • -3

Sorry unless something has radically changed recently. Thats not how dual sim phone works.

The general set up was that your first/data sim took up the 3g/4g.

The 2nd sim you used for calls on the 2g network… the 2g network has gone poof

      • +3

Depends on the dual sim phone. My Moto G4 plus does sim 1 4G & sim 2 3G

      • My Redmi Note 3 Pro is old and has 3G/4G SIM slots …

      • There are phones that do dual 3G+4G, and even phones that do dual 4G. Xiaomi comes to mind.

    • +1

Put SIM in your dual-SIM phone. Sell new tablet on eBay. Tether to your old iPad. Profit!

Be careful if you're buying such items though.

Someone posted a message thread here about their experience buying a contracted device. Can't remember if it was Apple or Android. The seller sold it brand new unopened, then reported the item stolen. Apple (or whoever) then disabled the device remotely using the IMEI. The seller got a brand new replacement of course. It was still partly useable but LTE didn't work or something. The buyer had no way to prove to Apple that the seller sold it to them. In their system the seller was still the owner of the device.

Selling is ok. I would advise caution if you're looking to buy one.

      • so they didnt get a receipt with the imei and sellers details viewing their drivers licence

        yep that will happen

  • Does this include EPL subscription?

    • $15 extra.

      • bugger…..Acestream / Kodi it shall be until non-optus customers can subscribe!

      • It clearly states that Optus Sport subscription is included at no extra charge so YES - it does include EPL. I double checked with live chat and they set it up for me.,

        • It was not included initially and now very tempted. Thanks for the update.

        • @Prav:
I don't want to sound like an advert & I do detest Optus BUT Ipad + 10GB data per month + Optus Sport + unmetered media for $35 per month - it's a steal.

        • Agree - just ordered the 128gb.

  • I want to ask a stupid question. What is the difference to the ipad air? Are they the same product?

    • -2

Mostly: Better camera, Apple Pencil support, and Smart Keyboard support on the Pro. Also a few other little things like True Tone.

    • It seems to be heads and shoulders above air 1 and comparable (though not strictly better than) the air 2 according to this.

      • +2

Sadly in efforts to compete with cheap android tablets, Apple has downgraded the screen technology compared to the Air2. An Air2 user would instantly notice the downgrade.

So what is the difference? the Air2 display has the LCD fused onto the glass, the picture is essentially flush with the surface of the iPad. This new cheaper replacement has a sizeable gap between the glass and the display. One looks very premium, the other..well, like a cheap android.

Only the Samsung galaxy tab S2 is as good or even exceeds the air2's display. There may be others that I'm not aware off.

        • -5

Who cares. No one complained about the screen pre-Air 2.

There is more to a screen than laminate.

Lastly, Apple has never given a toss about competing with Android. Especially cheap Android. They never compete with low end.

They're making iPad cheaper than they were in lieu of releasing a next gen range. iPad sales have dwindled because they could not offer a compelling reason to get owners to upgrade every 2 years like they can with their phones. So instead of releasing a new gen iPad, they refreshed their existing Air range with a faster CPU. Last year they didn't release new iPads either. What they did instead was double the amount of storage without increasing the price. Effectively getting a price cut if you take the original amount of storage you wanted instead of getting the free storage upgrade. They phased out 16GB in the process.

This had nothing to do with cheap Android tablets. If they were afraid of that, they'd make their own cheap iPads for $200-300.

One looks very premium, the other..well, like a cheap android.

Are you saying that every iPad Apple screen made for the first 5 years looked like a cheap android? Why wasn't anyone complaining about it back then?

        • +1

          @lostn:

I'm sorry im not quite sure what you are getting at with no one complained back then? No one complained about VHS picture quality back then. Once you've seen something better, looking back takes on a different perspective.

Regarding the Air2 vs the new iPad…first hand experience btw.

        • @muzzakus: And if you haven't seen the better one, you wouldn't care would you?

I presume if you are considering getting this, you don't already own the Air 2? Otherwise, why would you need this?

So if you haven't had better, why would it bother you?

No one complained about VHS picture quality back then.

That's a bad analogy. VHS was terrible back then. Being an analog format, the tape creased and then affected picture quality. It got jumpy a lot, and when using FF or RW, you would see lines across the screen. In a digital format, it looks much cleaner and you don't get a jumpy picture or lines when you FF. The older the tape, the worse the quality became. With a digital video image, you always get the picture exactly the way it was meant to be, or no picture at all. There is no 'inbetween' image quality. To say no one complained about VHS is patently false.

On the other hand, I've never seen anyone say "gee, I wish my iPad had some laminate on it. This looks so bad."

Regarding the Air2 vs the new iPad…first hand experience btw.

I own a Pro, and it is not a dealbreaker. I would get the iPad 9.7.. if I was in the market for one. I'm happy with the image of older iPads, and I'd rather have the later SoC to give it more legs than the Air 2.

You still haven't told me how Apple is competing with cheap Android. Where are their $200 9.7" iPads? Or any iPad for that matter. Were they targetting cheap Androids with all of their iPads before the Air 2 also?

  • +3

Also includes music streaming, so play music, pandora etc are unmetered. Pretty good, I got the samsung tab a @$20/and enjoying the unmetered streaming.

  • +2

Can the data be shared with the other mobiles in the same account?

    • +2

Pretty sure data pooling will work, so yes.

  • +2

Tablet is $648 outright @ Optus, so you're paying $8/mo for 10GB. RRP is inflated.

Still, $8/mo for 10GB is good if you're planning on purchasing an iPad anyway.

$7/mo for the data if you go with the 128gb model.

    • -1

Question is who is planning on buying at RRP price.

      • +1

Hence my suggestion for OP to use Optus' outright price rather than RRP in their calculations.

One could argue their price is still inflated, but these are still ~$620 on sale anyway - $648 I would consider a fair everyday price. Still, for the sake of possible deals, depending how you value the tablet you're paying x/mo for data:

        $600 = $10/mo
        $624 = $9/mo
        $648 = $8/mo (Optus outright)
        $672 = $7/mo (~RRP)

Can you actually make and receive calls with the data sim?

I was planning to take the SIM card out of the iPad and put it in my 13yo sons phone. I understand he can use data on it, but would he actually get a phone number also?

    • I dont think you can make call from the sim. Unless you only make internet calls.

    • ipad cant make calls no hardware

tab s2 on telstra 10gb @ $45/m has hardware to make the calls
i think the plan had a nominal amount for calls last time i looked
that would be a better sim swap and tether possibly

    • +2

No calls but it should be able to send SMS at an additional cost. The sim will come with a number. At least my data share similar linked to a phone plan did.

    • you get phone number buy can't make voice calls on data sim so it's skype, whatsapp, line , facetime and other instant messaging or voip service you like.

    • You could get some Skype GC's when it's 40%-50% off.

  • is it ipad pro? the Optus website doesnt confirm that it is pro…

    • Not the pro. They have the pro for $57/m

    • +2

Did some research and the ipad you get with this deal is NOT Pro - following are differeneces between ipad 9.7 and ipad pro 9.7 - happy to be corrected

ipad pro 9.7 inch OS is iOS 9.3.2, upgradable to iOS 10.3
ipad 9.7 inch OS is iOS 10.3

Chip set for pro is Apple A9X
Chip set for ipad 9.7 inch is Apple A9

CPU for pro is Dual-core 2.16 GHz (Twister)
CPU for ipad 9.7 inch is Dual-core 1.84 GHz (Twister)

GPU for pro is PowerVR Series 7 (12-core graphics)
GPU for ipad 9.7 inch is PowerVR GT7600 (six-core graphics)

Camera primary for pro is 12 MP, f/2.2, 29mm, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash
For ipad 9.7 inch is 8 MP, f/2.4, 31mm, autofocus

      • Pro is a bit lighter and thinner too

I guess above deal is just iPad, iPad pro link here for higher price

    • Spock disproves your neg

    • iPad 9.7 is the original iPad from 2010 is it not?

      • You're thinking of the 'iPad Pro' not the 'iPad', they both come in 9.7" sizing. Apple are running the same naming scheme for their laptops now too.

  • Would love an iPad and my phone plan is going to run out, and no phones out atm take hold of me (hoping for a Pixel 2 to be announced soon), so if I were to put the sim from this in my phone, would that continue my phone but with a new number?

    • +4

I believe this is a data only sim, so you won't be able to make or receive calls.

  • Tempted to get the 32GB ipad Wi-Fi for $469. For me, this seems better as I would mainly use wifi to load up stuff for commutes.

    Thoughts?

    • +1

      go for it mate

    • +1

Was thinking the same thing. This or just a WiFi since I already have 7gb for my phone.

Might get the 128gb variant once my CBA credit card arrives and get a $250 cashback.

      • Thanks mate, I was looking for the best price.

  • I could pool this with my 10gb $30 sim… So tempted.

  • Looks good. Will consider.

  • +1

If you leave your plan early, there are no plan cancellation fees. You will simply need to pay out the full remaining cost of your tablet, which will include any monthly device credit that Optus was going to cover. You will also need to pay the pro-rated monthly access fee for your final month and any charges incurred up until the cancellation date. This could include usage that is excluded from your plan or excess fees if you’ve used more than the included values.

Assuming you go for the 128Gb variant, does this mean if you cancel in the first month you pay 24*$25 = $600 for the iPad? Plus the pro rated first months access fee?

    Am i understanding that right?

    • Deleted

    • I believe they charge you the standard tablet fee per month but provide credit which gives you the $5pm for the tablet. In their critical info summary they state that upon cancellation you must pay out the remainder of the tablet plus any credit Optus was providing so in the end you would be paying the full fee.

  • Is this the iPad that retails for $469?

    • $469 is for Wifi only version, this one come with LTE Cellular which retail for $669 for 32GB.

  • Is this the iPad Air 2 rebranded?

    • No, it is the iPad 2017.

    • +1

it has the body and screen of an iPad Air 1 with internals of iPhone 6s

      • So if you have an ipad Air then not much point "upgrading"?

        • depends on which Air you have. If you have the Air 2, then yeah it will be more of a downgrade. With the Air 1, i would say still there's not much point upgrading, unless you really need a faster processor.

        • @cosmickinect: Yeah it's the Air 1 I have. Doesn't look like a worthwhile upgrade.

  • Does anyone know if Optus tablets come locked?

    • +1

Fairly certain no iOS devices come locked nowadays.

    • +1

      No not locked.

  • -1

I'm not buying it, so this is a very old model, thought it was equivalent to the iPhone 7 plus specs. Why would it be called 2017 most powerful iPad yet, false advertising from Apple.

    • it's just called iPad. There's no '2017' in the name. That's just the nickname people gave it. 2017 does not mean the most powerful iPad released. It just means it's the model they made in 2017.

It's a new model, but the SoC is not the newest. iPad is behind iPhone because Apple realized that line is struggling. People have not had a good reason to upgrade their iPads, so Apple is not making new ones every year anymore. People don't need it.

  • Oh my damn, this is a good deal! Very sad that I pulled the trigger on another deal 2 weeks ago :-(

  • +1

So is this a worthwhile deal than buying outright

    • Depends if you use/need data too then yes. But you can probably find cheaper outright if you don't need data

  • -2

seriously ppl dun need ipad if u got iphone

  • Good deal.

I wish Woolies offered it and data sharing to go with my S8.

  • Has anyone had any luck getting it pricematched at Telstra? At least a better rate with Telstra? I persuaded the chat guy, but they wouldn't budge from 62 bucks a month for similar inclusions.

  • Can anyone with first hand experience with this device comment on how bad the glare and reflectivity of the screen really is. The Youtube review videos all say it is noticeable and almost unusable in sunlight and even inside you may need to up the brightness as the screen looks a bit washed out. I am not an apple fan but this is a good deal and my Galaxy Tab S is not what it use to be.
