    4GB, ewwww

    • I've got a 4gb ram model, granted its 4 years old now. But its still reasonable fine for the type of use people do with their MBA typically.

Two years ago technology in a modern laptop
You can get a lot better for the same money in a Windows based machine

Even a surface Pro would probably be a better bet for a student at this price point with full hd, just as light and has a pen to draw with etc

Long battery life is the advantage of apple and integration with an apple ecosystem if you have an iPhone / iPod / airport etc

Apart from this reason I would shop elsewhere for a similar product, even the new xiaomi book would be a suitable candidate <1000 dollars and has a dedicated 940mx which is a lot better than a hd6000, although pros are the warranty service from Apple (walkin Vs send back to supplier for your xiaomi, although I've got 10+ xiaomi products and none have failed yet)

    • Unforunate for me if prices were better 2 years ago. I'm currently shopping around for a laptop but most screens are 768 in my budget.

        What….
There have been a boatload of lenovo deals sub 1000 with full hd screens

Do you actually need a mac?

        • I never mentioned a mac? I'll be installing linux on the machine. My budget is even less than 1k (also looking at 2nd hand machines) lol which is asking for a slight miracle but it has happened, very recently too. But I didn't realise that i needed to navigate to the "Laptop" sub-sub-category to see it, so I missed my opportunity.

The keyboard isnt QWERTY however but it's possible to swap it out.

        • @bigubosu: Bigger screen just means less battery life, don't even worry about it.

        • @TeanaciousTom:

Prefer a 15" tbh. Easier to read and organise my windows. I had a 13" and it was far too small for my liking over time.

  • is iPad mini worth it?

    • Not with 16gb

    • If you want to pay >$200 less than 128 gb version and don't need much storage.

  • Does officeworks price beat these guys?

    • They should, since The School Locker is a division of Harvey Norman.

      • +1

        I don't think you'd find a 4GB MacBook @ Officeworks anymore. The 4GB models were discontinued 19th April 2016.

  • That HP envy deal is good, 2400 last year I think

    That is one strange site.

Some stuff is awesomely priced. Others not so.

Some stuff is new. Others should be put out to pasture which will catch out the unsuspecting buyer.

Has anyone purchased anything from them? Have they had a positive or negative experience?

    • Hi Sillywalks,

Thank you for your feedback, I'll pass this on :)

      • Hi Rep

What warranty do we get with ipads? & are they new?

    • +1

I agree. Search yields random products returned. Are the products new/current? I didn't think 11" (or 4gb 13"s) Macbook were current

  • lol. Mac = screen size, ram and SSD. Non-Mac = screen size, CPU, ram, GPU and SSD. Guess people who buy the macs don't need to know the CPU/GPU config; only the 2 most important specs other than screen size.

    • +1

Whilst true from a technical standpoint, macbook airs don't come with configurable cpu/gpu combinations nor do they change models on a weekly/monthly basis, so advertisers might not deem it relevant/necessary to add in the extra information.

Similar example is a PS4/Xbox1/Switch, the most important specs after its game catalog is its cpu/gpu power yet I've yet to see it listed in a commercial advertisement, because it isn't something that is dynamic enough to matter in the scenario given.

Don't buy a Mac, buy a surface pro 4. More versatile, way better screen quality , plus touch screen and pen. Not to mention W10>MacOS.

    Happy shopping.

    • Except when the surface pro collapses when using it as a LAPtop on your lap… Borrowed one for a few weeks and could barely use it (physical keyboard mode) on the train

      • +2

I can use it easily when traveling on the nasty Mel public transport.

I don't think anyone can say that windows 10 is objectively better than OSX. In your subjective opinion perhaps.

I have been using OSX now for about 10 years and I can't imagine using anything else on a day to day basis. It gives me the unix environment I need for my job while also allowing me to run commercial software that isn't supported on linux (photoshop etc..).

I also appreciate it because being the designated family "computer guy" over time I get a lot less phone calls, like the only time I have heard from one of my Mac owning family members is when they poured a glass of water on the keyboard. I hear from the windows owning family members every couple of weeks - it's painful.

But yes - the above is just my completely subjective view. People prefer a particular OS for all sorts of reasons.

      • So.. you made you subjective comments without using a Windows 10 OS on a Surface Pro?

I can tell you I used both OSX and Windows 10. Window 10 is a lot better to use and easier to customise.

Even with my subjective opinions, at least I am on both OS not sitting across the fence looking at something you never tried and made projection comments where you have no experience of.

  • iPad mini 4 32gb are available in Apple stores for $429 if you'd rather pay a little more for a little more storage. That's what I've gone with. Only had gold left, hopefully my wife likes the colour.

  • The HP deal looks like a good buy. Can anyone here comment on ability of this machine?

    • +1

Looks very powerful if you check the specs. Very cheap for what u getting.

    • Very average for the price. Low-power last gen dual core i7 and GT940M graphics which are in the lower end segment. Has 16GB RAM and enough storage, but you'd be much more limited by the CPU in most use cases.

      • Come on, BS. The 6th gen i7 is almost as good as the 7th!

        • +2

7th Gen is about 16% faster on average, which isn't much yes. But I'm trying to say that it isn't a machine with a particularly "high ability" for the price (many of the previous deals here offer the same specs or better for a similar/lower price). For example this deal with a far superior GPU.

        • @donnot: Shame it's expired. I missed out and am still in the market for one. But as you say, the 940 lets this one down. Memory and SSD can be upgraded later, unlike the CPU/GPU which are usually soldered. Also consumer grade HP… Never again (unless they have upped their game)

        • @decr:

This deal just posted is slightly more expensive for the same Lenovo machine. Don't quite get the nicer design language as the HP (part of why it was originally priced very high for the specs) though.

        • +1

          @donnot: Yes, I just posted it :)

        • @decr:

          D'oh!! Good find!
