Weigh your luggage before you travel

Yep, we just use the bathroom scales.

When you're in a rush, and have one of those big suitcases with wheels that also double as lifting it above the scales, these are pretty awesome.

    • +3

Haha don't neg jv for that because I used to do that too.

    • +2

do you put your scales in your suitcase and take them with you? Suitcase weight is not usually an issue before the holiday, it's the return home that can be the problem due to everything bought while on holiday. That's why these things are great because you pack them in your bag.

I just keep track of the weight of the items I buy.

        • with what? going on feel?

        • -2

          @insular:

          with what?

I read the specs of the items I buy.

        • +2

@jv: because every item in the world has the precise weight on a sticker…

you can ask at the store or look it up on their website… It's not that hard.

@jv: lol or we can save the trouble and buy this. These things are a God send. I've been using one for years.

        • @Piranha2004:

or we can save the trouble and buy this.

          It's out of stock.

        • @jv: so? There are other retailers. It's still good value even at normal price.

          This is OzBargain, not OzGoodValue

@jv: So whats your point? I'm still talking about the same item. If people missed out then they can still find hthis cheap in other places. You just keep on calculating the weight of your items mate. I'm sure the roadside bloke in Thailand will be able to tell you exactly how much his stuff weighs. Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

        • @Piranha2004: beat me to it, but i was going to use 'lil ol asian lady with pointy hat' as the example.

          same same but different.

    Not needed. Follow these steps:

    Step 1. Weigh yourself.

Step 2: weigh yourself while carrying the bag.

Subtract latter from former result to get bag weight. Need to be stable for step 2 though.

Where do you get the free scales from?

      • +1

Aren't weight scales a common household object?

        • Not in my house!

      • Where do you get the free scales from?

        Roses ?

        Fish ?

But when you have loaded your luggage with full of souvenir in a hotel room but couldn't find a bathroom scale, having this along with you still gives you an idea how much more should you buy before heading home.

    • Before I used to do that (weighing in the bathroom scale). But when I try to buy similar like this, it gives me more convenient.

      *portability
*easy to see the measurement. Bathroom scale is hard to see if you hold a big luggage, you'll need another person to read it. If you're alone standing in front of the mirror will slightly help but hard to read.
*you will put a lot of effort weighing in the scale to hold and carefully bring down the luggage.

I have a different branded version of these, and they were handy for when you were actually already overseas and the hotel did not have scales available inside the room.

This was $15 delivered from Bing Lee 3 years ago. Good price $10 delivered now.

    • Yeah i got 1 back then good scales.

    • got it back then….super light …

    • I got one from this deal too.
Interesting, I just got back from a trip last week where I weighed my luggage before departing and it matched what was shown at the airport. Then during my trip it started reading exactly double the weight.
I checked to make sure it was reading kgs too.

Does anyone how to fix or recalibrate it properly? I looked at the manual and it only shows how to change from kg to lb.

      • Turn the scale on and you will see 8.8.8lb if you had accidentally set the scale to lb. Press the button one more time and it will show 0.0kg.

There's only one button, play around with it and it will shift from lb to kg or vice versa.

        • Yeah I can toggle it between lb and kg. But even in kg, it reads double the actual weight now.
On my way back I had a 19kg bag and it read 38kg and even higher in lbs.

          @unco:
Never had it happened like this before. May be, change the battery and see if it helps.

        • -3

          @unco: Division by 2 isn't that hard.

        • @alvian:
When I have luggage over 20kg and the max on these scales is 40kg then it says error.
But thanks for your attempt at a smartass comment.

        • @unco: what weight does it read without anything on it? Sound alike it's been calibrated while it had luggage.

  • Awesome… gonna upgrade to these. I see some comments re bathroom scales. Great for the start of your trip when you haven't loaded your bags full of shopping, but what about the return trip? How often do you have access to bathroom scales when travelling? I travel overseas frequently and have rarely if ever seen bathroom scales in a hotel room.

    • +1

They probably carry their bathroom scales with them in the suitcase.

  • Got one through this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105050

Hard to believe nearly 4 years!

    • Went through my emails… bought the same item from Bing Lee $12 on the 27/12/2012! I've taken it with me in a few overseas trips, now I'm mainly using it to weigh my 3.5 y.o son :D Still going strong :)

    • Me too ! can't believe its been so long !

    • me too, and mine are still going strong.

  • I'm happy with the quality and accuracy of this scale. Bought 2 of it 4 years ago, still work perfectly

  • out of stock :(

  • How does this differ from cheaper alternatives floating around on eBay?

  • Item out of stock?

  • I bought this exact item in a previous sale a while back and it is a great item to have if you travel often. I only travel with carry on so its important to me not to be over the allowance

  • I have used the exact same product, but a different brand. The thing has a stupid design flaw where the buckle cannot hold any luggage beyond 20 kilograms or it will unfasten itself. I am not sure if it happens to everyone's. I have seen other scales use a metal clip/hook instead, which is probably a smarter idea.

    • i have one with a metal hook, problem is that the hook doesn't easily fit over the handle of various suitcase handles, and the balance point is very difficult to it so the suitcase can on the handle when weight.

  • I take one of these with myself every time I travel as I love buying stuff cheaper O/S.

  • damn it , missed out.

Any chance of restock / other alternatives?

  • Looks like they're $19.95 at Good Guys: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/salter-luggage-scale-9500svdr

  • dammit why did work have to be busy today

    i needed this
