How do they pay for this?
Ohh yeah increase the cost of airfares

decrease the value of rewards point

And "double" the pity points to make the peasants feel great.

QANTAS GROUP DELIVERS STRONG RESULT ENABLING INVESTMENT IN NEW AIRCRAFT AND CABIN UPGRADES

        • Disgusting. Yet they're uncontactable, the service is poor, the food and drink is worse, the prices are high and they squeeze you in like never before

  • scam

I got gold as of last year from my work flights.. but seriously why bother? I had to try to get flights that were 1.5x the cost to get these status credits. All that for a beer and shitty snacks?

    • +1

But gold opens up more awards seats though.

  • +10

Yeah no thanks Qantas with your ridiculous devaluation of rewards points, this isn't a deal.

      Jesus someone’s angry at Qantas

      • +2

        By pointing out facts?

Points constantly going under inflation, ever expanding freebie campaigns via CC, and the supply rewards seats are not met with the points QF hands out.

Unless Qantas focus on what they do as an airline than scrapping the barrel to boost P&L, it will continue to be a subpar airline.

Gone are the days of some small, but great touches (slow cooked beef cheek), a happy/welcoming cabin crew. Time has moved on, and competitors are offering great products for the same or less.

Once flown Qantas for all flights (personal and work funded). These days, Qantas is the last option and most flights are self funded.

In order for maximising shareholder return, QF effectively screwed their employee, self funded customers, and tax payer funds (chairman's lounge to lure politicians). Corporate ethics101 teaches stakeholder theory for a corporate's long term value, and QF is failing this test.

If anyone has forgotten, the current CEO worked in concert with Joyce to run QF to its current state.

        • I've had some excellent crews recently. I did a business class redemption to Singapore and the crew could not be more helpful and were very proactive in handing out the pyjamas. Meals on board were excellent too with a steak I had being pink in the middle and not over cooked.

One big flaw is their Sydney and Melbourne international lounges are lacking compared to even some of their own lounges like in Singapore. If they could repeat what they have in Singapore with tended bar with many cocktail options, 3 or 4 hot options at buffet and maybe food station. They also had plenty of dessert options in Singapore with at least 3 or 4 options from cake to panna cotta whereas the Melbourne dungeon only really had some cake.

          • @Pcoder: Took two trip for the family over the last 12 months. Both CX and QF (no choice, works better in terms of timing) in business, self funded. Another one with SQ, work funded.

Outbound food onboard of QF was worse than what's found in a food court. Lounge being overcrowded with no available seats and food area empty (lounge in SG much better). Cabin crews appeared not wanting to be there.

The complimentary Qantas Club lounge pass given has never been used as its more pleasant having a meal outside at domestic airports.

No idea why people are still paying for such exorbitant pricing for subpar service.

            • @Flutterby: I think its crew dependent. Sometimes you get crew who love their job and love to interact with people and sometimes you get crew who don't want to be there. Qantas has always had the issue of a mixed bag, I was just putting out my recent example of a good crew.

Meals can be a hit or miss. I do think they should focus on quality in the premium cabins, adding such items like an amuse-bouche and look at using different chefs. I wouldn't even be too upset if the serving sizes got smaller as plenty of people fill up in the lounge and I think if you are truly hungry, this is where the snack menu comes in.

I always try to be courteous, especially on boarding as I think if the passengers are friendly to start then the crew are likely to be in a good mood. Being very obnoxious and demanding in the beginning doesn't help things.

              • @Pcoder: Totally. Being courteous is the baseline. It is public transport at the end of the day and people there are just doing their job.

  • What is better for a boring bronze member? Credits or points?

    • +2

Credits are only worth it for getting higher status - if you get a certain number in a given membership year to can qualify for a higher status, or retain one if you are already above bronze.

Credits reset every membership year back to zero, but your lifetime status earnings are retained - and can count towards lifetime membership if you fly enough (7,000 for lifetime silver, 14,000 for lifetime gold and something really high for lifetime platinum)

Points can be used for upgrades or seats, or merchandise from the Qantas store.

So if you're close to or after a higher tier than bronze then status credits are worth it, but if you're nowhere near the credits to get silver or higher, then points are more usable.

      • Bronze, points for sure. at least you can get gift card from the point (not the best value).

  • Does anyone have any great routes starting in MEL, to obtain approx 500 SC?

    • MEL-OOL-AKL return in business class for about $2k will net about 580 SCs.

      • Qantas does not fly OOL-AKL

        • +1

          Sorry - MEL-BNE-AKL.

      • Believe you're thinking OOL-MEL-AKL

        • Yes, that

        • I paid this $1,667 for quick return in Nov.

  • +3

Virgin / Qatar response anytime soon??

    • I was going to say the same thing!!!!!

      I need double SC soon.

    • Agreed - have some flights to book for travel in a fortnight and have been holding out.

Hopefully they follow suit, but with their upcoming changes to status credit earning based on dollars spent not miles, maybe they'll sit tight.

      • Unless they are desperate. They are generally better regarded than QF for flight experience.

Not many other carrier devalue both status and points as often as Qantas.

        • Not trying to defend Qantas here but you need a fact check if you think QF devalues a lot. (Hint the QFF is one of the programs that has devalued the least). Doesn't make their upcoming changes not hurt.

But take across the aisle, VFF absolutely guttered everything in comparison to what QF is doing (likely QF didn't go as far seeing the reactions).

Globally we've seen way worse devaluations happen across every major program.

I agree with the overall concept, but this isnt a QF specific problem. It's industry wide and QFF program funnily isn't hit as harsh as some of the other programs.

          • -2

@wackedupwacko: "you need a fact check if you think QF devalues a lot"

I think it's devaluation when every (wo(man), his cats and dogs are sitting on sub million point balance.

Every the graduate at work is telling everyone that he's a frequent business class traveller after redeeming the first business class flights in his life.

Devaluation doesn't necessarily only increasing the amount required to redeem, but also increase amount of points offered without increasing the amount of rewards seats. Similar to quant easing or central bank print money to devalue a currency.

"Globally we've seen way worse devaluations happen across every major program."

            Not the premium Asian carriers.

      • Where are you getting "earning based on dollars spent not miles" from?

          • @overbyte: Velocity is the frequent flyer program of Virgin, not Qantas.

            • @Losmano: What about Qantas? The thread is about Virgin's upcoming change to spend based status.

              • +1

@overbyte: I took the comment from ham0718 to be in relation to Qantas (as this 'deal' is about a Qantas offer) but can see I've likely misinterpreted it and the post is in fact about Velocity (which I acknowledge is going spend based).

        • For those on Velocity (Virgin),

Be aware the "Earnings Based on Dollars" system will commence next month on 1/4/2025 IF you have not booked any DOMESTIC flights before then.

International flights will be based on FLOWN date which will start 1 October 2025.

    Boykott Qantas

    • Already done so where possible. At work too, the colleagues are finally switched on and figured there are better products in the market.

  • +1

I Just booked flights yesterday. Timing couldn’t be any worse.

    • Same. Does it apply to flights booked but yet to be taken? Booked but don’t fly until May.

      • not usually. in the past though I have cancelled my booking (on fully refundable flights) and rebooked to get the bonus points/credits

    • I'm sure you can ask the staff to honour it.

  • Will be heading to the uk later this year via qantas reward seats. I had read that i dont get points on these flights, can anyone confirm. Most are partner oneworld airlines booked via qantas

    • +1

You won't get points as they are reward seats, but if you have points club or points club plus - you will earn status credits at these rates: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/earn-points/airl…

      • +1

No you won't, if they are with partner airlines you don't get the status credits/points for partner airlines with points clud, only Qantas (just back from round the world flights using reward seats, only the Qantas legs gave points club plus status/points).

        • -1

Should have credited them to Qatar. You get miles for awards flight which you can use with Velocity.

          • @nightelves: enlighten us how you credit a Qantas reward flight to Qatar?

            • @gromit: Qatar and Qantas are under OneWorld so when you check-in at the airport you ask them to add in your Qatar FF number. I do this when I had Qatar Platinum which allowed me access to Qantas business class lounge instead of Qantas Club lounge.

              • @nightelves: you cannot add a Qatar FF number to a reward seat booking as far as I am aware. yes you can switch a paid booking, but I have never been able to edit a reward seat booked with Qantas points to then get credit as a different FF number on a Qatar flight.

                • @gromit: I did it when I was flying domestic flying in Japan using Jal and booked with Qantas awards flight.

                  • @nightelves: interesting, will double check on my next trip. I looked at both my cathay pacific and JAL international flights and nothing beyond seat allocation was changable for me with award flights.

                    • @gromit: The reason I put in my Qatar FF was because it allowed me to access Jal First Class lounge as I had OneWorld Emerald and also priority boarding as Jal does group boarding based on status and class. Cathay Pacific was the same. Able to access The Pier vs The Wing at HK airport.

                      • @nightelves: I usually settle for the business lounge so not concerned with lounge access. It is the getting status and points on reward seats that is of interest, if that works I am definitely trying for that next time.

                        • @gromit: With Qantas I get nothing but Qatar I got some points and SC on partner flights booked as awards flight. So not sure how it worked with Qatar vs Qantas.

                          • @nightelves: If they let me do it next time I can but try. currently I get no points or SC with partner international flights.

  • Does Virgin usually follow with a similar promo after Qantas?

  • Does using credit card travel credit (ie. Amex) will still entitle me to get double status if I book through the Amex platform?

    • +1

I believe as long as you add your FF number, the offer gets applied to your booking

    • Yes. You have to enter your Qantas frequent flyer number while booking

  • Just checked qantas flights which is always 1.5x dearer than other flights …So what's the point…
