  • I think the highly regarded HGST drivers were the "coolspin" models which have been removed from sale for a while now, hopefully somebody knows for sure if these are worth the premium for the HGST name.

    • No it isn't "worth it" if the criteria is saving money.

The reason it may be worth it for business is it costs less to employ the people that swap drives in and out as they fail. But then again if Backblaze is any guide some businesses that deal with large amounts of data still opt for cheaper consumer level drives.

  • Interesting, I'm in the market for a few 6TB drives for my NAS but was waiting on a sale on WD Reds. I'll have to look into these, thanks.

    • Any reason for waiting on WD Reds? Personally I prefer HGST over other brands. Having said that, I am pretty sure WD owns HGST anyway.

      • Not really, I just have a couple in there already :)

      Price updated

      • Now that's a very very good price. It is unfortunate that I have already filled all four bays in my NAS.

Now where is that bargain on an eight bay NAS.

The heat and the 12 month warranty put me off :(

      • HGST brand is superior, but at $225, the Toshiba is much better value, despite only have 1 year warranty. The MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) on Toshiba is 1,400,000 hours vs 1,000,000 for HGST. If a drive has issues, you'll most likely pick it up in the first few months. Once it works well, it should be good for years. I can confirm that the Toshiba runs about 2deg hotter than HGST.

  • I have been looking at getting 4x of these HGST 6TB NAS HDD $309AUD each = 24TB for $1236AUD (incl shipping) = $51.50AUD per TB

Have recently found Seagate IronWolf 8TB NAS for $353AUD each https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?item=N…
    4x 8TB Ironwolf NAS = 32TB for $1412AUD + $72.50AUD shipping = $1484.50AUD = $46.39AUD per TB

Ironwolf deal comes out much cheaper per TB, even with shipping.

Any thoughts on this idea? I feel I'm procrastinating for the sake of it - looks like a great deal to me.

    • If you are going to use all 4 x 8tb I would say go for that option man.

Only input I have is that the reason I bought one of these HGSTs is because my Seagate has just starting making clicking sounds (still works fine but annoying noise). So i'll back up my current Seagate to this HGST and send the Seagate in for repair.

One point of note, my Seagate is not the Ironwolf series (just standard series).

      • Clicking sounds? I would have thought that is starting to indicate some problem that may result in data loss

  • I'm not getting the free shipping. Am I doing something wrong?

    • Still coming up as free for me. Did you select the 6tb?

      • Oh, it's because I'm an idiot. I also chose a 4tb…

        Cheers.
