  • 4TB for $214 as well

    • was about to get a couple of these, but realized they don't have free shipping.

      • It's showing free for me.
        $206 AUD shipped (4 drives)

        • quoted me $42 shipping for 2x4GB

          ended up getting a 6.

    • These are generally regarded as higher quality when compared to the WD range.

very good price. but those who intend to buy one should know that these are pretty noisy drives. i have two in my newly commissioned NAS (G1610T Microserver running xpenology) and sitting next to it I can hear the drives constantly reading away/spinning.

none the less, two more 6TB drives will be a welcome addition.

    • We run quite a few at work. Definitely concur — great drives in terms of speed and reliability but VERY noisy!

    • G1610T support 6TB? HP website shows maximum 4TB

      • Really? I've never checked, just assumed they would work. But definitely 2x 6TB deskstar NAS in there running xpenology. And will be getting two more at this rate.

Cheapest drives I've ever paid for this was $270/each. So I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger for these at this price.

Any idea on expiry on this deal?

        • Not sure when this deal will expire..I'm guessing end of March. :)

        • @Nimitz: guess I'm going to place an order tonight then. Don't want to miss out

    • I also find these run warmer than my other drives. I have had over 8 different models in my server over time. My HSGT is always my warmest drive.

    • Could you recommend a reliable one but not as noisy? I want to use it for my home studio.

      • WD Red aren't that noisy, not quite either

        • Not quite what?

        • @Vieira4:
          Not quite quiet ?

        • @z28:

          yeah, that too.

  • Nice. Thanks

HGST are the most reliable at the moment
    https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-q4-201…

    • Useful data, but with the big disclaimer required in that backblaze use desktop drives, not NAS ones as per this deal so there's no guarantee the failure rates apply to the NAS products that this drive by and large competes with.

  • Price is Ex GST.

If ordering over 2 drives, duty is applied.

  • HGST coolspins are perfect for those looking for a NAS drive

    A bit overkill for a home server/NAS.

    • What's overkill about it?

      • Well it's clearly being marketed as an enterprise product, the high RPM and 24/7 availability isn't really needed by most home users.

        • +1

It's not that particularly high an RPM, no different to many desktop drives. I think in many instances people are getting them for the reliability. Sure, it won't run 24/7 but hopefully something designed to do so will stand a better chance in the long run.

I have surveillance cameras running on Synology and it records 27/7.

        • @AshFon:
          27/7 that's unpossible!
But yeah, pretty common usage for 24/7 - I'm sure plenty of home users do this.

        • Far from overkill. Desktop drives are not designed for NAS applications. Eg WD greens constantly park the headers. Not only makes the server less responsive but it will end the drives life early

          @4agte:

I have WD greens in my home server and have disabled the head parking 'feature' so they're essentially WD reds without the RAID feature which I don't need.

        • @tranqme: how do you disable the park feature?

          @t25:

I used a tool called WDidle3, more info here.

  • What about warranty? Is it local, or do you need to send it back to the US?

  • Shipping (last item I looked at $45), plus GST? kind of kills most newegg deals, especially since I'm also not sure how the warranty works?

This one comes with free shipping "Free shipping w/ purchase, limited offer"

back in my day, these things were known as Deathstars…

To this day, there's never been a hard drive failure quite like it… behold http://www.astro.ufl.edu/~ken/crash/

    • But since then they have improved and are much more reliable. Doesn't do much to shake off that reputation.

  • Damn…. these guys at newegg are efficient!

Order placed 10pm (+8), and before i'm out of bed, they have packed it and its already on its way to DHL.

2 hours later, and I get an invoice emailed to me.

  • anyone who ordered/received/used previously give some impressions? I am looking at getting an HP G1610T + 4x 6TB to setup a storage/NAS/Plex box - these HGST drives look great value and reliabilty; keen to get anyone's view having purchased/used recently.
    Thanks

I'm using the hgst 6tb NAS drives with the G1610T. Running xpenology, and so far no issues.

  • Why is this marked as expired?

Looks to me like it's still available an the price has dropped $4 to $322 AUD Delivered!

In saying that most reviews say it's way too loud for a home NAS. Might stick to WD Reds for my personal needs.
