If anyone's wondering 80k NAB points = 40K Velocity (2:1) or $400 in gift cards (BP, Bunning's, DJ, Coles etc..)

    • +2

Anyone know if the 40K Velocity points is better value than $400 in gift cards?

      • +1

its definitely better value to convert to velocity points. the point worth is higher if you are using them to upgrade to business class

        • +17

Depends on how much you value business class as well. I would not actually pay for business class so the sticker price of an upgrade doesn't mean as much to me.

        • +1

are they still worth higher if you're using it just to get an economy flight?

        • +1

          @noone:
Value for paying flights is more fluctuating because the price for a flight in real money keeps changing, while the price for paying with points is always the same.

I personally get most value from domestic flights, as the fees are low and availability is usually good enough for me.

To get an idea (all flights one way, no additional fees):
          MEL-SYD: 11100 points
          MEL-AKL: 28800 points
          MEL-BNE: 15300 points

        • +4

@eecan: Are you crazy? You get to your destination at least 2 or 3 minutes before everyone else!

        • +2

@MrTweek: You should pay the taxes. Whereas airfares are cheap in terms of points, taxes are paid for by converting points to cash at a very poor rate (like 0.6c per point).

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Absolutely true !!!

      • +1

Should be worthwhile. You could sell the points outright for $400 if you change your mind.

Otherwise 40,000 points should be around 2 return flights, say Melbourne to Brisbane (I think +$50-100) or so which would generally be around $600 at least (- the $50-100, so you're still ahead).

Could use it for business class upgrade but eh, not worth it imo.

      • Yes if u can sell them. There are Ppl pay 1.2c-1.4c per point. $500-600. $400 is a bit low ball

        • +2

Default price on ozbargain is 1c/point, not that easy to sell at higher value

        • Isn't that against the Velocity T&C?

        • +2

          @PT18: Yep ;)

        • @lgacb08: pretty low ball. Do a fb gumtree google search ull find plenty of people that can do 30% better than a cent. Last time I sold mine I got 1.4. If ur getting less than 1.3 ur getting stooged imo

        • @PT18: just don't tell the t&c police and they won't getchya lol

        • +3

          @Gavman:

          good luck
they are cracking down on it now due to "abuse" if you want to risk your points go for it
          I know I wouldn't be

would be easier just to book flights after you charge people IMHO

  • Anyone know what the transfer rate is for airline miles?

The website doesn't seem to show it.

    • +1

also curious to know what the rate is for velocity?

      • Am curious too and it seems you have to login to find out which is why none of us are able to see the conversion =/ lol

Hopefully it's a competitive 2:1 which would be decent, otherwise I'm expecting 2.5:1 or 3:1.

        • +5

I checked with the rewards team and its 2:1 so 40k velocity.

        • That does not say what the transfer rate is, hence the question.

        • @theblake: I believe the original question to which I responded was if your could transfer the points to any freq flyer programs (at least, that's how I read the question). This whole negging of comments is becoming a bit rediculous on this site. Someone posted a deal, Nab doesn't make it very clear for us so we're alll trying to help each other out. Perhaps I got the question wrong this time but why would you neg a response unless it's an annoying or dumb comment that adds no value to the discussion?

        • @bozbargain: this is the question you replied to. "also curious to know what the rate is for velocity?"

  • what does the 80,000 points convert to in velocity points?

    • It's a 2:1 ratio so 80,000 NAB points = 40,000 Velocity points.

      • Thanks. Couldnt find it

  • Can we convert to QFF?

  • +1

Looks like it's a new credit card.. have never heard of it and pretty sure NAB never had their own Rewards program. They were the only one of the big 4 to not have their own rewards program.

Probably to do with the RBA decision on interchange fees so this is probably designed to be a replacement card for bank-issued AMEXs.

i have NAB velocity credit card from my home loan, am i eligible for the promo? may have overlooked the T&C and it doesn't mention anything.

    • Offer commences 23 January 2017. To be eligible for the 80,000 bonus points offer, you must apply for a new NAB Rewards Platinum Card by 31 May 2017, be approved, and spend $2,500 on everyday purchases within 90 days of opening your account on your NAB Rewards Platinum Card. To be eligible for the 40,000 bonus points offer, you must apply for a new NAB Rewards Classic Card by 31 May 2017, be approved, and spend $1,500 on everyday purchases within 90 days of opening your account on your NAB Rewards Classic Card. Everyday purchases exclude transactions NAB decides are wholly or partly for gambling or gaming purchases. NAB may vary or end this offer. Points will be credited to the qualifying members account within 3 months of meeting the spend criteria. The annual card fee waiver will be applied at time of card opening, and applies for the first 12 months. You will be charged an annual card fee in the 13th month of your card account. Minimum monthly repayments must be made by the due date each month. Offer is not available when closing/transferring from another NAB credit card account or in conjunction with any other NAB credit card offer.

Looks like as long as you keep your other card active, you would be eligible?

      • Applied for a nab promo for a Qantas Card for 60,000 points early last year, still holding on to the card. Does that mean it's 'in conjunction with other nab credit card offers'?

        • +1

I think that clause is a standard way of saying that this promo cannot combined with another offer for that same card.

  • +3

Whats the minimum income? Cant seem to find the info.

    • +1

What would be good is a list of all CC and minimum income required.

      • Platinum cards are usually $50k; $75k for Black and Signature tier cards.

  • -1

Is anyone else seeing the annual fee of $195 listed when applying??

    • +3

it really doesnt matter, dude. says on the site "80,000 BONUS POINTS when you spend $2,500 on everyday purchases within 90 days & enjoy $0 annual card fee for the first year *" - you got it in writing. you get charged? you call them, they waive charge.

    • in the terms;

"The annual card fee waiver will be applied at time of card opening, and applies for the first 12 months. "

  • Perfect timing, I have to pay for a cruise in the next 3 months.

    • +1

Cruises often attract a surcharge. Using a credit card linked to a Paypal account is sometimes a work around option.

      • NAB will charge 3% overseas for for AUD transactions processed by Paypal.com.au if they figure out that the "merchant" is located overseas.

They dont do this with all relevant transactions, they also miss plenty. Only ones where the merchant name can be clearly assocated with an overseas seller.

  • Can someone explain to me why you want to transfer to velocity points? Does velocity points get you cheaper gift cards?

    • +5

No, you wouldn't do that for gift cards. You would do that to redeem (Virgin) flights.

    • Velocity points gets you on an aeroplane and fly somewhere for free.

  • Can I be bothered going through this again… also how to spend 2500 in 90 days lol.

    • +15

You could take me out for a night on the town.

      • +7

wowser you cost $2500 a night?

        • -1

Pretty cheap, considering the whole town is invited!

    • +2

buy an electronic gadget, pay your electricity and gas bill, telstra bills, etc

    • +1

      Invoice yourself a paypal invoice…

      • If you don't mind paying 2.6% + a 30¢ fixed fee?

        • You can refund it later?

        • @dw121212: still come up 30¢ short unless you make a call to PayPal and get them to reverse that 30¢

      • +3

just get a square reader for $19 and then charge yourself 2.5k that will cost you 1.9% then get the 400 gift cards and bring the card back to the bank!
Hard to earn more per hour!

        • -1

          Is this a practical method?

I'll perform it if it is…

      • +1

is this a proven method? Cause its bloody brilliant!

    • If you can't spend $2,500 in 3 months why don't you get woolworths gift cards to reach the threshold…?

      • +2

and renew your rego, car, home, health insurance…done!

    • +4

how to spend 2500 in 90 days

Ring up your health insurer, and ask to pay the next year in advance. That should chew up a fair bit of the $2500.

As a bonus, as health insurance goes up in April, you'll effectively be paying this year's rates from April through next January.

    • You could just prepay bills or get woolworths gift cards…

    • Eneloops

    • I wish we could pay tax using credit card.

    • Pay for childcare if you don't have kids pay for childcare of your friends ahahha

  • No info on transfer rate to FF programs. Just says 3000 points needed to transfer.

    Anyone know?

    • +1

Can't find it myself either. But since 3,000 is a bit of an odd number, my guess is it's something like 3 for 2?
It's a pretty awful landing page as with most pages since the NAB rebranding. None of the references (1,2,3 etc) seem to link to anything so very hard to find out the small print.

    • +1

      I found the transfer rates:

All three cards earn NAB Rewards points which can be manually converted into frequent flyer points as follows, with a minimum transfer amount of 3,000 NAB Rewards points at a time:

3 NAB Rewards points = 1.5 Virgin Australia Velocity points
3 NAB Rewards points = 1.0 Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
3 NAB Rewards points = $0.015 Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollars

  • And does it come with Amex plus visa like the other banks?

    • +1

Doesn't look like it, otherwise it would be mentioned somewhere, especially in the points earn section.

  • Offer is not available when closing/transferring from another NAB credit card account or in conjunction with any other NAB credit card offer.

    Very broad statement.
I wonder if that excludes any that's previously held a NAB card?

  • Nice was wondering when nab would offer a decent cc

  • +2

Question does spend/rewards points include Bpay payments?

Note Commonwealth Bank doesnt allow points to acrrue on Bpay payments

  • Hmm, wonder if buying 14 x $200 Myer Gift Cards (@ $180 each = $2520) would satisfy the spending criteria? (pretty sure there are still offers around for this)

Would net $2800 to put towards Macbook Pro refresh at the end of the year, plus get 4 x $100 Myer Gift Cards using the points.

$3200 of gift card value for $2520…

  • Just successfully signed up, thanks!

  • Cheers OP :)

  • says complete for me. Pending verifications…. so I guess that means I won!?

    • No they still have to check your pay slip

    • expect a call or email requesting documents

      • maybe I should have said Im an existing NAB customer… couldn't work out what my ID is so didn't pick that option lol

        • +1

They will know if you are an existing customer = D

        • +1

@Godric: Also forgot I get paid fortnightly instead of monthly so should be double whatever I put down on my income lol …. lucky this is just an cc application not an exam paper

  • Just wondering if those who sign up to these types of CC advantages, do you cancel the card before the 12months expires so you don't have to pay any Annual fee? Then look for another points related opportunity? Or do you end up keeping the card long term?

    • Nope you cancel after you get the sign on bonus and ask for a pro rata refund of the annual fee

      • +2

there is no annual fee to start with…

        • well he's asking in general

    • +1

I usually threaten to leave once I get my points which sometimes results in 10K or more points being thrown in as a bonus, then when I get that second bonus I leave for real for real.

I've done this like 5 times now and have had times where the points pay for a months worth of groceries :D.
