[Existing iiNet members] iiNet- Upgraded Naked DSL plans finally!!

425

Finally for those on iinet naked dsl, which includes me, we finally get increases in quota to sort of match some of the other ISPs. Checked my quota this morning and got a pleasent surprise. Now how am i going to use 50 gicks in 2 days when my quota resets??!?

Nothing on the iinet website yet. But check whirlpool and your quotas and you will see the increases.
to:
Home 2 = 20/20
Home 3 = 50/50
Home 4 = 60/60
Home 5 = 70/70
Home 6 = 85/85

Will update when i can find a better link.
Cheers guys

mod - made a note in the title that this is really for existing iiNet members at this stage. If the prices were in here as well, and if there were updates on the actual sales offer pages, then it could be of interest to others.

mod - I'm leaving this published for now in case you want to add more details in the coming day or so, but otherwise it's more of a forum announcement

Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking of moving to another ISP now that my contract's up, but I might just stay for now. :)

I can confirm that the quota changes have already been applied to my account. I am on the DSL Naked 5 and it moved from 60gb to 70gb, Pity I just do not use my download as much as I used to, I may even be able to save some $$$ and drop down a plan with these new quotas.

  • Fantastic! Great catch…

  • +2

    What are gicks?

    • or as iinet's tech support sometimes call it 'geebees'

  • No prices makes baby Jesus cry…

This is very nice, but how is it a "deal"? Their plans may be changing, but these will become their regular plans, no? And even ignoring that, it's not yet officially available, and you've not put any prices in your title or description.

    • agree, but its still DAMN GOOD! and it is officially available as i just checked my toolbox

As a current iiNet Naked DSL customer, I can tell you that I'm currently paying $69.95 per month for 30GB/30GB under the Naked DSL 3 plan. So based on the deal above, it is being upgraded to 50GB/50GB… so deal for me! :)

      • I'm not trying to be rude, but would you have missed out on this "deal" if you hadn't seen it posted here at OzBargain?

        • +3

I would have… because now i'm considering downgrading my plan from NDSL3 to NDSL2, because the 20GB/20B does me well… if I didn't know about it, I'd be paying $10 more each month, for more GBs than I can use.

        • -1

hey Nezuji. I dun get what u mean. Mine in on 10/10 GB permonth which is now 20/20GB per month. I did not know anything, until i just find out. I dun feel that i miss out or anything. Coz I just keep using it. Until a point, you will start checking ur quato. THen you will find out and u will feel happy… so, it does not have anything to do with this post…

    • I have to agree. While this is probably great for people already on iinet, I fail to see how it is a "deal" for the rest of us. A quota increase isn't a deal, unless the price is also reduced.

      • +3

but you getting more quota for less money.

        • There is no mention of prices in the post, so how is it for "less money"?

      • More value for money = deal.

Try not looking at things through black and white filters — you can have a "deal" when you add value (in this case, bandwidth) for the same price.

    • question to Nezuji. what is your definition of a deal? for limited time only? or any time but the price is cheaper compare than similar product on the market?

      • Well now, I'll readily admit that that's a pretty grey area. I did spend a long time looking at all the guidelines here on OzBargain before I voted and made my comment, and there's nothing in there against making a post like this. But the reality is that if everyone made a post every time a company changed its lineup of regular offerings (products or services), or someone found a company with a price that was lower than the lowest-known competitor, this site would be knee-deep in something very close to spam advertising, with its current format.

I may be wrong, but I think that the "vibe" at OzBargain is not to be an index of lowest prices (something that I believe is indicated in the deal-posting guidelines when they say you should check price-comparison sites before posting your deal, implying that OzBargain itself is not a price-comparison site), but more a listing of bargains to be snapped up before they pass you by. So, in light of that, yeah I think that "limited time offer" would be an important part of what I would consider to be a deal on OzBargain.

I'm aware that this is slightly hypocritical of me, as I've commented on other's posts regarding online savings accounts and never raised this issue before, but honestly, I'd never really thought too hard about it until now. But at least with online savings accounts, the offer is almost always still in the format of "get more interest until such-and-such-a-date".

Maybe the community attitude toward this sort of distinction is worth discussing on the forums?

i guess, we just need to as moderator to update the rule. so it will makes easy for us to point out this is bargain or not bargain.

coz for me definition of bargain, if i can get more with the $ amount or i can get cheaper price elsewhere for similar product.

when we talk about time frame, may be iinet update their products every 6 months. In this case, this post has fulfilled your requirement about the time frame?
again about time frame, you might argue, 6 months too long.
some people might argue, time is a relative. no one can say long or short.

at the end, i just want moderator update the rule, to makes everyone more clear what u can do, what u can't do. and less argument and less work for them as well.

agree! and iinet naked isn't even groundbreaking. - if it were then I'd give this a possitive.

  • +1

Yeah true, it's not really a deal, but it is good news to people who are on iiNet like myself.

  • Now if only they would not count uploads in those quotas for naked users….

Probably not the place for a discussion, but I've been thinking of switching to TPG which has recently become available at my exchange. Being on Home4 and only an occasional user of VoIP, for the same price can get 100/100gb, 2mbps/1mbps shaping, and no uploads counted.. but thats way more than I need, so could go on the plan below for $59 and 70/60gb

But I haven't had any experience with TPG as an ISP, can anyone offer an insight to what they are like?

    • Switch to TPG if you are not a gamer or do not need reliable internet.

My cousin and a few friends are on TPG and I feel sorry for them, they also feel sorry for themselves as they always get dropouts or slows down to a halt especially when they are owning in a game of DotA.

They are never able to host a game as their connection is just too unreliable to host. Another thing they have is a lot of download quota but their speeds is never good as it seems like TPG always gets congested.

I use iiNet for home and my small business and it is reliable enough so I have 2 reliable links from my home and shop 24hrs a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.

      • That sounds scary. I'm looking for a new isp soon and I am in Brisbane. Do you know which exchange they use?

      • Your cousin/friends have a problem with their modem/phone line.

Regular TPG users don't get any dropouts or slow downs. Connections are 100% reliable.

I am in Brisbane, and everyone I know has a great connection with TPG including myself.

  • As an iiNet customer thanks for posting this, they did the change automatically for me as well which was great, means I didn't have to log in and manually do it like last time. Makes the plans much better value than previously so I'm happy.

  • Just checked my iinet account to my surprise I went from 10gb/10gb to 20gb/20gb per month in my plan. That's so nice, now I have just until June 30 to spend the 12gb left.

    • Ditto… same here.. While iinet should be expected to increase these plans (not necessary a 'bargain'), I'll mark this as a plus as its a nice FYI indeed!. Thanks.

  • Why is iinet so SLOW to upgrade their plans? I was on their 10/10 NDSL for 60 a month, moved up to 30/30 recently for 70 a month, because 10/10 is WOEFUL. JUST YESTERDAY, I cancelled because their usage allowances SUCKED, so I went with TPG. If they brought out these new plans earlier I would've considered.

I just don't like how iinet is so slow to match the competition with ndsl.

    • 2 weeks ago I upgraded from 10/10 NDSL to 30/30…. now that the plans have gone up I'm looking to downgrade to the 20/20 one (as 50/50 is way too much for me). I agree that a bit of prior warning would've been nice. Still, I shouldn't complain that they finally upgraded the NDSL plans.

      • If you are geeky enough like me and read the Whirpool forums you would of read that iiNet were looking at upgrading the NDSL plans about a month or so ago.

From reading the forums if you may give them a call and ask them to waive the fee to downgrade plans.

        • Thanks, I do read WP but not all that often… even when you read the iinet thread, there was lots of speculation but no real facts forthcoming!! Ah well…. it happens… and overall we got more for paying the same amount of $, so I don't want to sound ungrateful Twas nice to have the upgrades :)

      • Actually, +1 for iinet, they waived the downgrade fee of $29, and a few other people on WP found this too, just by saying they had never downgraded before. Being a customer for 5 years (As in our case) helped a bit too, I think!

  • Thanks for the heads up, but like others, I also think a forum topic would be better.

My plan went from 150 to 170.
    That's good I guess.
Since I got capped last month.

I always thought iinet was bad in terms of connection but hearing the above stories about tpg I feel much better. :)

  • I got this upgrade like 1-2 months ago… lol, have you not been checking your quota?

  • For anyone interested:
The on and off peak time now varies depending on plans:

    ………………………….
    Home 1 - Home 4 8am - 2am 2am - 8am 128kbps down
    ………………………….
    Home 5 - Home 7 9am - 1am 1am - 9am 256kbps down
    ………………………….
    Naked Home 1 - Naked Home 4 8am - 2am 2am - 8am 64/128kbps
    ………………………….
    Naked Home 5 - Naked Home 6 9am - 1am 1am - 9am 128/128kbps
    ………………………….

this was from a personal enquiry to iinet as it's not shown on their website. for long time users, it used to be 12-7 or something.

    • Actually that information has been on the website all the time. I'm with iinet since February and I read it before I signed with them.

    • That's been on their website for ages now.

  • ~How to use your excess quota you ask?~

~Turn off WEP/WPA and the let neighbours drain it for you!~

  • Sorry, but I agree that this is not a deal.

It's an upgrade provided free to iiNet members, who are notified by email about it.

So while it's good news, it's not the kind of thing we need to see on OzBargain.

  • +1

LOL who really cares. it's a deal. There's plenty of junk on ozbargain, why get so precious about it. People can pick and choose what they like. I'm personally not interested in a packet of chewies but others are obviously so each to their own.

edit: At least iinet is telling their customers about it and upgrading. Netspace don't even do that. You'll have to check regularly to see if a better plan has been released. Happened to me twice and missed out by months.

    • +2

Why get so precious about it…?

Because if noone says anything, more people will post junk, and it'll get even harder to find the bargains that this site was designed to share.

      IMHO.

      • Exactly. I was incredibly tempted to make a bunch of posts about non-deal "deals" like this one to make my point, but that would be exceedingly childish, and just irritating for everyone. Besides which, it looks like others have already taken the positive response to this post as a green light, and they're making those posts for me.

  • Seems my max download speed has HALVED since the upgrade. I'll be changing ISP quick smart if they decreased max speed to equate for all the new quotas.

    • Same here. My net is SUPER slow.

  • that's the problem. it's all these internet 'geeks' trying to use up their quotas slowing it down for everyone. Cheap Deals + Large quotas generally equals to oversubscription. Shooting yourselves in the foot.

  • Not a deal, it's an announcement. Should be in the forum.

The original post is incorrect: Home5 bundled with phone is 70/70 and has been since April. The new changes are to unbundled and bundled with netphone, and for home 5 that's 25/30 and 35/35 respectively. Please download the PDF available from here:

    http://www.iinet.net.au/products/2010-06-wp-plan-changes.pdf

    and fix this post.

    • Original post refers to the naked plans. My Home5 was 60/60 up until yesterday and was automatically upgraded to 70/70 this morning (not since April).

      • Ahhh, might help if I took the time to read it properly
        face palm

  • There is heck more people giving it a positive vote than negative so GOOD DEAL regardless.!!!

  • I hope they give you unlimited gicks one day. Then you have more gicks than you know what to do with them.

  • +2

I guess technically not a deal. But there have been many other similar "deals" go unchallenged.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/27468

all more announcements then strictly speaking deals.
    Mods might want to clarify.
