DriveNow - One Way Campervan Hire Relocation $5 Including Free Fuel - Destinations Updated Daily

542

This is a long running deal that was last posted in Jan 2014 and which I keep looking at considering.

Destinations are updated daily between 8:30-9:30am, and you can score some great routes if you can line up a couple of destinations in a row within the travel periods. The amount of free fuel ranges from $50 to $350 and so do the km's.

Below is taken from the link:

Why so Cheap?
Rental companies frequently need to move and relocate campervans around the country. This can be due to seasonal changes or because demand for vehicles is greater in different cities due to festivals, sporting occasions or other events. Rather than pay for a driver to relocate a campervan, rental companies offer them to the travelling public at knock down prices producing the perfect win-win outcome.

How it Works
The Campervan Rental Relocation list is updated each day at between 8.30am-9.30am (AEST) for travel in approximately the next 2-3 weeks. This is when the list is fresh and vehicles most likely to still be available. It's the best time to submit a relocation request as we are more than likely able to confirm your request. The relocations book quickly and therefore as the day progresses the availability becomes more limited.

Select from the list of published deals above and complete the online request form.
A member of the DriveNow Reservations team will contact you or alternatively call us on 1300 547 214.
A holding fee of $75-$120 will be charged to your credit card/debit card and applied to your booking. This is not a booking fee!! If you are entitle to a refund or need to pay the balance of the rental cost this is done at collection of the vehicle by the depot staff.

The Australian mileage allowance for each rental is based on distance between pick-up and drop off location plus 550kms. Any kilometres travelled above this will be charged at AU$0.55 per km. When travelling in Australia you will receive a fuel allowance. You will need to complete your rental and keep your tax invoices. This fuel allowance will be reimbursed up to the given amount on completion of your rental.

When booking with DriveNow there are absolutely NO Booking fees and NO administration Charges. We believe in passing the full value of the deal through to you!

  • Would love to do this, thanks OP

This is very similar to a company called imoova.com.au who do relocations in Australia, New Zealand and North America.

This would be pretty cheap holiday if you found a return trip. Otherwise you would have to book a flight.

    • +5

if you found a return trip.

I think you fail to see the reason for these deals.

      • +2

How so? I'm just saying you could get a bargain holiday but a bit risky if you had to book expensive flight home. Obviously you want to travel one way occasionally but mostly you want to return.

        • +5

I mean the deal is only where there is a significant imbalance, so by design you will never find a return trip. They are all against the seasonal flow. You might use it as one leg of a return trip.

I was looking at the idea of flying to one city, drive, then fly home. But the time allocated is so short. Who wants to spend half their holiday driving? I know campers can be expensive, but hire-car plus a tent is much cheaper and no need to rush.

        • @manic: Ok yeah I know what you are saying but I did find for example Adel>Perth and Perth>Adel so I assumed it might be possible. Having just done a long distance drive yes it's not much fun at all, but you might put up with all the driving considering the price!

        • @leTintin:

I did find for example Adel>Perth and Perth>Adel

Well that is odd! Though different vehicles at the same time. I guess PER-ADL is an exception to the seasonal flow.
Perhaps they just have very little demand on the route. Not the most exciting route.

        • @leTintin:

          Fuel will be expensive!

        • @manic:
Different demands exist for different sized vehicles and also different companies. This website is just a host for others.

    OP, thanks for the reminder.

Booked one of these from Adelaide - MEL so booked one way flights for family of 4 by the time we landed in Adelaide the camper was cancelled. Good luck.

    • +5

If they can just cancel like that - no deal for me!

      • +50

Please note the vehicle type booked may change prior to departure or be cancelled at the rental company's discretion, even on the day of travel

Kinda makes this whole one-way thing pointless if you are on a tight budget. Cost would balloon out of all proportion if they cancel on you.

I'm negging so people will see this fine print before they get screwed over.

        • +1

That's not even a deal then.

Would anyone consider spending $100 on the chance they might get some groceries or they might get nothing?

        • @Telios: me! if the groceries are worth $1000 and there is a 1% chance I get nothing. But not campervans though.

      • +4

It's a great idea but I agree with LeTintin.

Perhaps if you were a backpacker travelling wherever, whenever then maybe it doesn't matter so much. For me the possibility of a cancellation and cost of last minute flights is not worth the risk.

        • +1

Could be fun for retirees, just ride the current see where you end up. Use the cheap pension rail ticket for return trip or to popular pickup destination?

    • +4

A true ozbargainer would stay in Adelaide.

      • +1

        no…!! get a cheap flight

    • +2

You must return the vehicle no later than 1500 hours (3.00pm) on the last day otherwise there is a late fee of $150 if returned between 3.00pm and 4.00pm and AFTER 4.00pm this late fee becomes $1000!

      OUCH!!

I just read an interesting Lonely Planet forum topic on this. The guy said that he negotiates a couple of extra days and petrol money and often gets it if the company is getting a bit desperate to fulfil an order; he phones the various companies direct. If you are flying back/onward and you are going against the flow, the flight might be cheaper too.

I often thought using a one way trip in some van might be a good way to move some things, and I had in mind a large carpet at the time.

    • +8

I'd go for a boat relocation if you're looking to get rid of "a large carpet".

    • +2

I used to do relocations as a cheap way of seeing the USA when I was younger. Especially in the off-peak months (outside summer) you can negotiate a bit with the company for extra days/mileage. Managed to go DC-Seattle-LA-New Jersey, big round trip in near new vehicles. Also did Vegas-Pittsburgh, Toronto-Florida, various others at different times.

Never had a cancellation on me

Also consider that the cheap deal comes with very high insurance excess. If you want to reduce it you have to pay a lot for insurance. And on long distance trips watch for the windscreen cover/excess…lots of trucks around flicking rocks off the road

    • Can you get local travel insurance to cover the excess?

      • +4

Yes you can, I usually got a domestic travel insurance from 1cover which includes the rental car excess cover and was quite cheap.

  • you can score some great routes

They say travel broadens the mind ;)

I fail to see how this is a deal considering the the experiences people have had in this post..

  • +1

I did this via Apollo last year when the Broncos got to the grand final and I couldn't afford $1100 return flights to Sydney. Ended up with a fully spec'd camper, two queen beds, two TVs, fridge, shower/toilet, the lot. Pickup and drop-off were painless (except for me not realising I had to empty the shitter before returning) and the whole experience was a lot of fun.

Can't comment at all on Drivenow, but there are plenty of existing companies doing this style of rental and it's great for budgets.

  • -1

This isn't a deal unless you are wanting to run away from home and don't care where you end up.

The travel times allowed are only for driving somewhere really quickly.

  • $1,000 security bond on one's credit credit card it would seem. Gets taken off later of course.

  • I am planning to do this early next year in New Zealand.
I have been browsing the above site as well as http://www.imoova.com/ looking at the frequency of the deals.

Has any one does this with two small kids under 4?
