Bauhn 65" 4K LCD TV $799 at ALDI - It's Back 15/10 (Excludes WA/SA)

2230

It's back again. For those who missed out on this deal, here's a second chance.

Available NSW/VIC/QLD only.

I picked one up last month and am very happy for the price. Sound is predictably average so you'll want to hook up some speakers. Watching the NRL GF on 9HD was fantastic.

Full specs from the Bauhn website here.

Also worth noting is that it's really light. I'm an average sized guy and had no issues carrying it myself.

Standard Aldi 60 day money back guarantee and 12 month warranty apply. No smart/android functionality but we've all got a few Chromecasts by now which does the job well.

Solid Gizmodo review here. Following his suggestions certainly make it a better viewing experience.

We got one last week and I have to say it is absolutely excellent - Amazing quality for the price.
Once the backlight has been adjusted using the service menu - it has excellent blacks and colour.
4k content looks great and 1080p upscales very well (we use Apple TV 4).

The panel in ours is Samsung - and it seems that most tend to be.

At some point in the next decade if/when we ever get a useable NBN, this will be great for 4k Netflix too…..!

Assuming this is the same model (09/16) then I highly, highly recommend!

    • +1

I have NBN and Netflix looks top notch, though I was under the impression it was still only streaming FHD?

      • +1

You have to upgrade your account to a higher tier to get the 4K content (also 4K HDR content)

        • +4

It also only works on a specific set of TVs, and I doubt this is one of them. It doesn't even work on a PC.

        • +2

You can use some set top boxes and blu-ray players:
          https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

It's the chromecast device that will run it not the tv

        • @T1OOO: chromecast of course cannot do 4K though

        • -1

On a panel TV like this, from conventional viewing distances, you'd never notice the difference (1080p v 4k).

        • @wired00: This one will do 4K, when it ships this month

          https://www.google.com/chromecast/tv/ultra/

        • 1080 vs 4K content, you won't notice any difference. Both format looks good and are indistinguishable from each other unless you eyeball them.

Therefore Netflix with HD access ($11.99) is more than sufficient.

    • What setting did you have for the backlight? I've only changed settings in the standard menu so far.

      • +2

For the backlight (service menu) I went for 55 as I could decide between 50 and 60.
I also adjusted down the brightness to 45 and bumped up the contrast to 60 and turned noise reduction off (just in the normal menu)

You can get to service menu by pressing 'Menu' and then 1147 - but be careful not to mess with too much..!

I could image if I moved this to a different room I would probably adjust the settings a bit so - it will require a bit of trail and error until you find what works.

      • +1

i set my backlight to 30

    • +5

Yeah how about longevity, as in how long it lasts before breaking down. That is what is very important.

      • +26

3 weeks and counting. Looking good.

        • +59

          @hollykryten:
Youre right!!!! Jason07, please make sure you get back to us next week with further findings

        • +46

          @pointnlarf: will do!

Can confirm, still working this evening. Tiny House Hunters looks more like medium sized house hunters. Glorious.

        • +7

          @hollykryten: There is always one

      • Ive got 2 buahn TV, one 8 yr old the other 5yr both work perfect. Medions are rubbish apparently though, know 5 who had all died in 2 years.

Take from that what you will.

      • idk… my tv never really breaks down. what do you do with it?

    • is there any way of knowing what panel is in the tv?

      • Before purchase, no.

        • how do you check the panel?
Do you have to open the tv case?

        • @mazuko:

Some comments elsewhere mention details from within the service menu

    • would you mind sharing the calibration settings and how you IDed the panel brand?

  • +5

    How much for the thongs?

    • +34

      $899 and I'll throw in a free 65" TV

  • -2

    can you make a pre-order?

    • +2

Doubt it. I got to the store about 10mins before it opened last time. There were about 12 people lining up for one and they had ~15 in stock.

      • My wife and I have to go to work that Saturday.Guess im going to miss out again.

        • +14

This is what mates and family are for. Best bet is to talk the deal up so much that one of your mates wants one, explain he has to get there early, then once he's decided to pull the trigger, ask him to grab an extra one ;-)

        • @jason07:
Yeh they all have Big TVs lol, so dont really want to make them wait inline early in the morning for me

        • I purchased on last sale. Got there 5 minutes after they opened and about 8 of them heading out the door. Asked the person at the counter out of curiosity how many were left after only seeing 2 left on the pallet. They said they had about 8 pallets full out the back. So I would still check Saturday afternoon.

        • +1

          NSW store?

        • @kurupted: Aldi hornsby still have heaps left over from the first sale. Pop in there any day and it'll just be in the middle with all the other specials. No waiting in line

        • sweet, same model right? i will head there maybe later today, if not then monday :)

      • any advice for someone who has never been to Aldi? It would kinda be embarrassing to get there early but then not know where to go for the TV. Do they have some designated kind of 'tech' section or something like that?

        • Last time they just had them out the back. They knew they were gonna get swamped so they just directed people to the store room and we grabbed them directly from there.

        • +4

Line up then go straight to the check out counter when the door is open…
Mention that you want to purchase the item then pay for it..
Then walk calmly to where the boxes are to collect…
Avoid racing other people to collect the TV first, rookie move…

        • +3

@pitiek: assuming that other people will race to the TVs and potentially physically grab all the stock how does your move guarantee that you will get one? (I understand that you will have the receipt, but no physical item yet) I imagine someone who grabbed the TVs without paying first will have to release one in this case? Or you are saying that you will get one from the stock that is not yet on the shop floor?

        • @zulus: Have done this more than 5 times.. They will always stock at the back which aren't on display.
          Mainly for bulk sized items.
          Try it..

        • +2

          @pitiek:

          This isn't your first rodeo.

        • @pitiek:
I think i'll bite the bullet and get one this time.. I have 60 days to decide don't I! will follow your suggestions, Thanks!

        • +1

It really happened.. i just bought the only and the last one in Eastwood ALDI. they really changed the location of the TV. They usually store the TV at the back of the store, but they suddenly changed the location to the front of the shop today…

I was lucky to see and grab the TV before the others in front of me as they all ran to the back..

        • @HAOOFE:

          LMAO

  • +3

Might have to indulge this time, should go well with my shield TV and 4k Netflix.

  • +3

does it play x265 from usb?

    • I have only been able to play a few 4k downloads, but unsure what codec it was.

  • my local aldi (kippa ring, QLD) had 8 in stock on thursday.

    • +1

you knew this was coming, ive been searching for that "latest" catalogue for the last few days……

    • Still a few left at my local Aldi (Oxley) from the previous deal as well.

      They're taunting me…

  • How much is weight of TV?

Can it be mounted on wall?

    • +1

22kg without the stand/feet. Can definitely be wall mounted.

    • +2

Mine is wall mounted - you can get brackets for under $30

  • +1

Is this the same tv from last year selling for $1199? I can't seem to find support or any firmware updates. Hd looks fine but sd channels are terrible.

    • No, different model.

    • +7

SD content looks garbage regardless of price on a 4K panel.

I've got a $3500 65inch Sony and standard def is unwatchable and the Sony's arguably have the best upscaling engine in the industry, so I can only imagine what a cheapie would look like.

That being said, if you're basing your purchase of a 4K TV on what SD looks like - you're probably not really serious about buying a new TV in the first place. So long as SD displays - that's good enough for me.

I'm heavily thinking of buying one of these for the bedroom. $799 is a steal.

      • What do you watch in SD these days BradH13? (Honest question).

        • +1

Nothing, and that was the point of my comment. Haha.

        • I mean, lots of people would with 90% of FTA being SD - but I'm all about streaming and VoD these days with my nice 100mbit fibre. Haha.

        • @BradH13:
Is FTA not HD generally, being 720p or 1080i?

        • +2

@chyawala: Only 7, 9, 10, SBS broadcast in 1080i, and ABC News broadcasts in 720p. All the rest are 576i SD.

        • -2

@chyawala: Agreed - I reckon most is HD now - all main channels are HD and majority of programs also.

      • I have had a 65inch 1080P Plasma over 6 years now.

        Still going strong.

I watch mainly FTA TV.. some SD and HD. Kids usually watch ABC2 which I think is SD.

Good thing about my plasma is that SD and HD still look very good..

I still prefer my Plasma to many LCD/LED TV.. of course it can't do 4K, but there's not much 4K contents, can't wait for NBN.

  • +32

    65" 4k @ $799… I was Bauhn for this day.

    • +6

      Is your name Jason?

      • +27

61 minutes by the looks of it.

      • +6

I'm interested to know where you've ever heard it pronounced other than in your own head?

        • +3

Its a German company, and a "fake German" brand. Thats how Germans pronounce it. So I guess I assumed.
Does Versace rhyme with face? How would you pronounce Bauhaus? "bor-horse"?? :-)

Out of curiosity, where did you get the idea it was pronounced "born"? Have they used that in TV advertising in Australia?

          https://www.google.com.au/search?q=bauhn+pronunciation

        • +2

          @manic:

          Fair play

        • @manic:
If it's a made up word it can be pronounced however one pleases. Don't presume to correct others.

        • +2

This is what immediately came to mind.

        • +1

          @manic:

I think we all think it's Born because it looks like the shaving company Brauhn ;)

      • +1

no wonder your avatar is upside down..

  • +4

Can this TV fit in a Honda civic sedan?

    • 65" TV box, it likely won't fit in a small car. You may need a ute or trailer. I guess you could hire out a ute if you were that desperate for one of these TV's.

      • +4

        or take the bus

        • +1

LOL. Imagine trying to take a 65" TV box onto a bus. Probably get booted off it.

        • +18

          @hollykryten:

You would go inside the bus, not on top of it.

        • +2

          @Stix:

Stix (waiting at bus stop): "Mr Bus Driver, Do you stop at stop 15?"
Mr Bus driver: "yep. Hop on"
          Stix: "ON!??, not IN!?"

        • @Marty131:

          I normally drive a car.

        • +1

          @Stix:

He is talking about when you drive your car to the bus stop to get in the bus.

        • @Stix:

Here's an example referencing another form of transport:

          http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417148/

          :)

    • +13

Yes, but you'll need to carefully fold it.

      • +1

That's terrible advice, you'd better roll it up to avoid creases.

    • +4

Can this TV fit in a Honda civic sedan?

No but a Honda civic sedan can fit inside this TV.

    • a 55 inch box doesn't even fit in my Mitsubishi 380 sedan and that's a family car, so I highly doubt a 65 would fit in your Civic.

    • I put a 65 inch Oled in my rav4 last week and it fit on an angle so a civic would have little hope..

      • -1

now someone is bragging here or has a lot of spare cash $6.5k to $8k

        • +3

          But still drives a Rav4?

        • +2

I bought this on behalf of a client and it was only $5500 after I put the pressure on the salesman. Not my money. Just providing feedback on a question

You would be surprised how many ozbargainers have cash to blow on high end goods.

        • +2

RAV4 is a good car with good resale :)

        • -1

          @berger:

The newer ones are. At least their engines don't catch fire or topple over at high speeds anymore.

      • If I manage to get one of these it will be going home in my Rav4, hopefully it will fit!

    • Pimp my ride?

    • I plan on strapping one to my back and riding the pushbike home. ;)
